Ubuntu Multimedia :: Standard Benchmark And Test Software To Compare My System To To Ascertain Whether Its Graphics Or Net Connection?
Jul 1, 2010
I love my Ubuntu installation, I'm definitely a convert. This issue is Im sure my graphics arent working at full spec, seems very slow compared to my old windoze install. Is there a standard benchmark and test software to compare my system to to ascertain whether its graphics or net connection? (Im mostly streaming over the net.. I have removed ipv6 already, no better.)

I am running the newest linux (ubunbtu 11.04) on an old laptop (2.3 Ghz celeron, 760 mb ram, bios is the latest version). I don't expect it to perform well, it's not a fast processor.But.....it performs so poorly with linux...and I am beginning to wonder whether the machine is broken or malfunctioning. The processor utilization seems high at all times, but I am not sure what is normal/typical.Which of the many benchmark software packages should I use in order to quantify it's performance (or lack there of)? Are there web resources that will list benchmark values of various machines, so I can determine if my punch box is broken or whether it's just slightly slower than other similar machines?

I tried out the Ubuntu 10.04 CD/DVD and found something that was not to my liking. It seems that the operating system does not know how to recognise the Ubuntu CD/DVD's programs.
When I used the Synaptic Package manager to install OpenJDK, The manager tells me that there is nothing that it needs to install online, which was what I was expecting since that was what happens when I try to install OpenJDK in earlier versions of Ubuntu.Then it asks me to insert the CD. I did that as well. I inserted the CD and it asks again. So I OK'ed. Then it says "some files cannot be retrieved", as shown in the picture.
I could just download this online, but I don't want to because I don't want to go the time to download the same software again from the Internet; I don't have the time.

I downloaded a linux kernel from linux.org to check what is the kernel is about, i clicked on make_file or make sth .. and in the same session i downloaded a program called login window.
Now the problem is that the system boots ok, it gives me a msg saying that system is running in low graphics mode, when i press ok i get a few options like troubleshootin or restart x or use back up configuration .. and nothing works .. when i press start normally it never stops loading .. i can see the terminal when clicking ctrl + alt + f1,f2 ... but when i press ctrl + alt + f7 or return back to the desktop ubuntu is still loading .. it never stops loading.
And after using ubuntu for a while i really hate windows 7 .. i have it on the system, so is there a way to fix this problem?

I've recently been experimenting with glxgears, but found people saying this is not an ideal benchmark tool as there are many variants; for example resizing the window affects the FPS tremendously.
I'm interested in testing the difference between using the proprietary ATI driver and the open source driver and also the performance under various distributions.
What's the best software to benchmark graphics cards?

I connect to my work with GRDC through a VPN. All worked fine until yesterday. IT is now very slow. Could this have anything to do with the fact that Update Manager was only able to do a partial upgrade?
I use Ubuntu 9.10 I tried the RDC on a Win XP machine and the speed is normal, so I don't think the Remote Desktop Server is the problem. Is there a way to test thespeed of the VPN connection or the RDC connection?

So - i got it to work - ish.
first of all the hardware that's involved:
2 wireless cards
The goal is: using a monospace font
Code:
I hope this diagram shows my intentions, how i may have an internet connection via phone or wlan1 share it with eth0 and wlan0
Anyway as i said, i have done _some_ of this, this is where i get stuck i did this (while as SU)
Code:
I then configured dnsmasq using the settings on that page
I then plugged my laptop into the switch and tried to connect- IT WORKED I then plugged my computer into the switch - IT DIDN'T xbox 360 didn't work.
But the laptop still did
I used firestarter along side this setup to see connections, nothing was blocked (bar dns which i unblocked) and my laptop still worked after
The xbox wasn't able to get an IP adress, the laptop did (192.168.254.246)
nor was the computer
I can give more data on request, but.... after i restarted nothing worked, i did the settings again, nothing worked, eth0 was never ready, and you can't connect it to the switch. i'm new to networking; i'd call myself an adept novice regarding linux itself, and all computers can be assumed to be using ubuntu 10.10

I love Ubuntu Linux - especially the commmand line. But I have to admit that, at least for now, Windows is more user-friendly - there's more software for it, more drivers, and more stuff just works.
Knowing that Mac is built on Unix makes me wonder if it's the sweet spot between them. But I wonder: how similar is the Mac command line to Linux's bash? Could I pick right up with using vim and bash scripting and git, etc? Would common commands like changing directories be different? Does anybody know an online "compare and contrast" resource?

over here on my desktop I have KDE 4.6.4 running, updated from 4.6.0 through all intermediate steps. In the last few days I feel, that it got a bit unstable and I think, I have messed it up again, with doing some stupid things in the repository management. But of course, I donīt remember what I did...
So I am asking myself, if I could reset the system to the state where it came from: KDE 4.6.0, including all the updates from the standard openSUSE repositories.
I would do it as follows:
1. deactivate the additional KDE repositories and X11 from OBS (I needed it for installing xbindkeys)
2. switch packages to the standard repositories, which came with openSUSE, and also switch the packages to Packman
3. run an update, or how it is called, the switch back to 4.6.0
would this work, or would I completly mess the system up?
I then would leave it like it is, with the only additional repoīs: Packman

During the installer specifically in 'tasksel', I'm given a few options. I generally de-select every possible option but what exactly is under the package group name 'Standard System'?ScreenshotObviously when I de-select 'Standard System', basically my installation of 'netinst' is almost immediately completed and I'm asked to reboot. How can I see or find out what exactly am I omitting from the system?

The whole day was more or less spent reinstalling a basic Gnome Ubuntu system. Everything went swimmingly until I started with the XBMC part of the installation. After wrestling with PPAs and apt-get for hours I finally got it installed, but then it all turned awkward in a hurry. It simply refused to start up. I clicked the icon and nothing happened for a good few seconds. The screen then flickered black for an instant, but after that nothing. I started from a terminal and it showed an error message saying it couldn't import Python's os and shutil modules. I found that mighty strange since both modules are part of the Python Standard Library.
Finally, in a bizarre twist, it turns out this doesn't seem to be a XBMC problem, suddenly apt-get started complaining too. TL,DR: I (nor the system) can't import any Standard Library modules in Python in Ubuntu! Is this a path problem? Or have I actually managed to uninstall some vital python packages, if so which ones? I am running Ubuntu 10.10, but I don't think this is necessarily a Ubuntu specific problem. Here are some dumps to show the error messages: (I forgot to copy the XBMC error message, but it looked exactly the same as these below, i.e., it couldn't import the os module) First from apt-get:
Code:
tv@tv:/usr/lib$ sudo apt-get autoremove
[sudo] password for tv:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

I see lots of threads on converting your CDs to MP3s, but I want to do the opposite. I want to burn MP3s into CDs that will play on older CD players that dont have MP3 support.
So how do I do it? I have Mint on this particular computer, which is like having Medibuntu already I think.

Just recently converted and I'm running both Ubuntu 11.04 (the Natty Narwhal?) (about 10 gig partitioned) and Windows Vista.
As said in the title, All DVD's and Video files won't play well: DVD's are pixelated most times, jumpy and sometimes the sound is scratchy - sound usually sorts itself out in a minute or so, but not always and similarly with any video files, like MP4s and other ripped files. I usually use VLC but others also don't work well or not at all. When playing MP4's do work it usually freezes the rest of the computer and I have to force switch off by the main switch as nothing works.
I've tried out tips like the following from users with previous problems on Ubuntu forums but still nothing seems to work: I've installed libdvdcss2 and the latest vlc. I've uninstalled all my players and reinstalled them.
I don't believe it's a restricted format problem as the DVD drive works fine in vista as does all the video files.
I wondered if perhaps my system specs aren't good enough for Ubuntu: intel(r) celeron(r) d cpu 220@1.2ghz 1.5ghz 2 gigs ram 32 bit operating system I drew this while on vista - when I tried to check my system specs using these commands on Ubuntu the "commands were not found": sudo ishw -html > mySpecs.html and sudo 1shw

I am trying to fix a perl script, and I really suck at perl. But I think this problem will be easy for people who know it.
The problem is, I have an old setup script someone wrote many years ago. It fails if the standard shell is dash and not bash. The only way I've gotten it to work is to point /bin/sh to bash. I looked thru the script and it uses "system" many places, and I think that's the problem.
I searched for it and found this link:url
My plan is to include this function:
Code:
sub system_bash {
my @args = ( "bash", "-c", shift );
system(@args);
}
Then I could simply change all calls to system into system_bash and it should work?
The parameter to the system calls is usually some variable. What if the parameter is a list already? Do I need to test for it somehow, and if it's a list, prepend "bash" and "-c" to the list? How do I do that?
In the script there are lots of places like this:
my $error = system($cmd);
if ($error) {
die/warn "some error message";
}
Shouldn't there be a return in the system_bash function?

I have two video files recorded simultaneously. I want to edit them into one video file with non-standard resolution and a split screen view which, two videos can be seen together. I tried kdenlive but I was unable to change the output resolution.

I'm trying to enable a non standad vertical refresh rate of my crt in squeeze/gnome under the radeon driver, which does work under lenny and fglrx out of the box without any additional manual configuration. I already tried adding the VertRefresh option to xorg.conf under the Monitor Section, but that didn't worked out so far. One strange thing is that if i look into the Xorg log file i can see a line which sais as if the driver can see the possible refresh rates, but still in gnome i cant set those refresh rates to be active
# /var/log/Xorg.0.log|less
(II) RADEON(0): Ranges: V min: 50 V max: 160 Hz, H min: 30 H max: 85 kHz, PixClock max 180 MHz
These are probably only the rates which my crt can handle, but still im unable to set 1024x768x100Hz because the max i get is 85Hz for that resolution.

I was recently playing with building some things from source, and to do that I had to install all kinds of libraries, including lots of components of KDE. I'm done compiling, but now I have all this software installed that I'll never use again. I'm about to do a fresh install of 11.04; is there a way I could maintain a test environment of some kind so that this doesn't happen in the future?

Have Ubuntu & it was working well, but has become slow, 'greys out' on me regularly - eg. pic loses colour & nothing will respond for a few or more seconds. Also 'Ubuntu Software Centre' & "Synaptic' thingy come up with errors, saying can't install or uninstall progs. Although it seems they may do it OK despite saying they can't. Have Computer Janitor installed, but this is no longer working at all. So... is there a program or such that I can use to test/clean out the system?? For that matter, is there a program for testing hardware, as I'm not sure if it's an indication of unhealthy hard drive or such?

Recently upgraded to Squeeze, and have a problem with Devede I haven`t seen before. When I try to convert three avi files to play on a standard dvd player, the finished ISO is still only 2,2 GB. It turns out only the first file gets included in the ISO, even though I can see Devede processing all files during conversion.
