Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 OS Cannot Not Ascertain CD/DVD Data

I tried out the Ubuntu 10.04 CD/DVD and found something that was not to my liking. It seems that the operating system does not know how to recognise the Ubuntu CD/DVD's programs.
When I used the Synaptic Package manager to install OpenJDK, The manager tells me that there is nothing that it needs to install online, which was what I was expecting since that was what happens when I try to install OpenJDK in earlier versions of Ubuntu.Then it asks me to insert the CD. I did that as well. I inserted the CD and it asks again. So I OK'ed. Then it says "some files cannot be retrieved", as shown in the picture.
I could just download this online, but I don't want to because I don't want to go the time to download the same software again from the Internet; I don't have the time.

I love my Ubuntu installation, I'm definitely a convert. This issue is Im sure my graphics arent working at full spec, seems very slow compared to my old windoze install. Is there a standard benchmark and test software to compare my system to to ascertain whether its graphics or net connection? (Im mostly streaming over the net.. I have removed ipv6 already, no better.)

I've been using Excel from OpenOffice with moderate success for the last year. Now I've just tried to open a new spreadsheet and I'm suddenly getting a highly condensed view. The cells are about 1mm X 4mm. If I expand them by selecting and dragging, then try to copy data from another spreadsheet onto the new one, the data shrinks to the small scale -- unreadable.

opened with openoffice. THIS DIRECTORY HAS BEEN UNMOUNTED TO PROTECT YOUR DATA.
From the graphical desktop, click on: "Access Your Private Data"

From the command line, run: $ ecryptfs-mount-private

Right now I have a 320GB system drive and 3TB data drive. I want to add two more 3TB drives and do a software RAID5 3x3TB. Is that possible without losing the data that is already on the data drive?Just want to make sure before I bought the 2 two drives. Not looking for instructions on how to do it,but if you want to include some that would be great too Just making sure it will work.

A few months ago I did a clean install of the unbuntu desktop which I used to run an internal website. The OS was installed on one hard disk and two other hard disks I setup as a mirrored raid. Now when I start the computer I get a GNU GRUB commandline interface and I can't seem to get my installation up and running again. I've tried some of the suggestions for GRUB issues however I can't even get ls to work (gives me an error).
I am at the point where I don't really care about the OS installation but would desperately like to get the data off the raided disks and also a few files off the boot disk. I can't seem to work out how to do this using a liveCD, if I open the disk utility, select the raid and click "Start RAID array" I get a "Not enough components available to start the raid" error.
For the boot disk the major partition is a Linux LVM partition (and I assume the data I need is on that partition) however I cannot work out how to mount it. I really hope you guys can help me as the information is rather important.

We purchased a new database system at work last October, ditching the old system because of a lack of support from the vendor. This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.
Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.
My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.

I've recently upgraded to 10.04. I'm trying to import my evolution data using the following instructions. Everything seems to work ok, but when I start evolution up, it continues to act as a new installation. What do I do?

I use a Karmic Koala and I want to upgrade to Lucid Lynx. All the packages are up to date. So if I upgrade online, how much data download am I looking at? I have a sufficiently fast connection, but I have a limit on the data that I can download. Is it less than downloading a Lucid Lynx CD? Can I get an exact figure somehow?

I am trying to make a usb installed ubuntu(with persistent) unchangeable. The usb needs to use the data from the persistent casper-rw, but in the same time not be able to change the casper-rw. I have tried installing ubuntu on a SD-card, and then simply lock the SD-card. So fine so good, but it just wont bootup then - it says "Aufs mount failed".

I had 10.04 in my netbok but something happened, packages failed to install, all sorts of errors when shutting it down, kernel panic when switching on again so I've decided to just install it again. I've got 10.10 running from a LiveUSB drive right now and I'm going through the installer. I want to just tell it to use the exsting partitions, dont bother formatting, just install the new OS on top of the old one so I can keep the user documents etc How do I do this? I picked advanced partition management in the installer, pressed Change on sda1 and gave it a mount point of / but now the "format partition" is ticked and greyed out.. i dont want to format this partition, I just want to install to it

I installed 10.10 on my workstation but now my system refuses to mount two existing two data drives that were already there... sudo mount /dev/sdc /mnt/data-b gives me: mount: unknown filesystem type 'isw_raid_member'
I didn't change any BIOS settings... My BIOS is not configured for RAID at all, that setting reads AHCI, which should be okay for my kernel (using the stock 2.6.35-24).
I tried to force mount one of the drives with sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/sdc /mnt/data-b
but this gives me an even stranger message:
"/dev/sdc already mounted or /mnt/data-b busy (neither of them are true...)
It's mainly the "isw_raid_member" thing that troubles me... I didn't and don't have a RAID system at all..

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my computer (no other OS) and it wont boot up. I don't want to lose the files in my documents. I tried accessing them using a live CD and then copying them from the harddrive (home folder then 'richard' then documents then tried to open the folder but I dont have permission to and there seems to be no way of changing this.
The files are definitely on my harddrive but I dont seem to have a way of accessing them!
Is there anyway of either accessing them and copying them to a usb etc or repairing my installation of ubuntu without erasing the files in my documents? Opening in recovery mode etc wont work.

i have done a "wubi" installation of ubuntu 10.10 in my F: drive of HD.But the installation got some errors and now i wan to uninstall the ubuntu without losing my other data in F: drive.i have tried uninstalling it from "add or remove programs" in control panel of woindows XP but there is no program as ubuntu in it.

Where apart from ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail does kmail keep account data, such as login data/names of pop/smtp servers? I wanted to install an entirely clean version of kmail, so I uninstalled/re-installed kmail via YAST. I manually deleted ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail. After installing kmail I found that the account data of my Yahoo account were still listed in the kmail configuration panel. Shall I delete the Yahoo account within kmail prior to uninstalling the kmail package?

A few months ago I have setup a server with three hard disks. The partition mapping the disks as follows:

Now I have the following problem the LVM file system don't mount properly.If I open the mount point I see only a few files of the LVM disk. If I want to unmount the disk I get the following error:
umount /data/

If I want to mount the volume I get the following error:
mount -a
mount: /dev/mapper/gegevens-Data already mounted or /data busy

I have an application where I am sending data via serial port from PC1 (Java App) and reading that data in PC2 (C++ App). The problem that I am facing is that my PC2 (C++ App) is not able to read complete data sent by PC1 i.e. from my PC1 I am sending 190 bytes but PC2 is able to read close to 140 bytes though I am trying to read in a loop.Below is code snippet of my C++ AppOpen the connection to serial port

I have an ASUS 900a with a 4GB SSD running Ubuntu NBR 9.10. It has several accounts and associated data on it. How do I save the accounts and data as I upgrade the SSD? I have an 8GB USB drive, an external HHD, and an external DVD burner available. I suspect that clonezilla will be part of the answer, but I don't know how to put the pieces together.

I was a regular Windows user and have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 2 days back. Not really sure what was my mistake during installation but that had erased all my data. I lost windows completely and lost all my data in all 4 drives including drives itself.I searched in internet and forums as how could I recover my data, and got solution to use test disk. Testdisk worked perfectly, I recovered my 4 drives and retrieved data for 2 of my drives. But I still cann't retrive my important data from other drives.I guess data still exists in hard disk. (no free space , and no data)I know there could be several threads which had solved this kind of problem.

I am an Apple user who ended up buying a netbook with XP installed on it. I got the Acer Aspire One zg5 refurb, because it was super cheap. Problem is, I noticed I hate the Windows experience and I would like to have something similar to Mac in this computer, and I've had some casual experience with linux before (through a live CD that a friend gave me). However, I need to keep the XP running on this thing because I need it for work. The main use that I have this netbook for is to take up notes, do some light music/video editing (for which I have to admit XP has been strangely okayish), listen to music, browse the web, among other things. I would like to install Linux in this because it offers great tools for these functions, and I need to have those on the run. So I thought I would try to double-boot this computer with XP and Ubuntu, but I am sort of a beginner on this aspect.
My questions are what follows: If I use the GParted that comes with the Ubuntu 10.04 installation disk, will I lose the data that I have already stored on this PC? If my computer isn't able to give the needed resolution to run Ubuntu, would it still run OK in the netbook? Will my computer run OK if I make it double-boot? Would it be too much of a hassle for its Atom processor to do this? I would like to install some of the apps that come with the Ubuntu Studio version if I can make the system double-boot. Is this possible? Can I customize the desktop version of ubuntu to give me some ot

I've finally had enough of Windows and have decided to go with Ubuntu. However I hope someone can help me with this query... I currently have a single hard drive which I have partitioned under Windows into two. The old C:drive holds software & the windows O/S and the D: drive is where I stored photos, documents, etc. Can you tell me if it is possible to install Ubuntu into the old C: partition and leave the d: partition in tact (for a few weeks to ensure I have backups of everything on here). Alternatively, if I add a new drive and install Ubuntu onto there, will I still be able to access the old D: partition (or would I need some kind of dual boot config)?

I'm using windows 7 now and I want to install ubuntu as the main OS to the current C:drive(which has installed windows currently) but with keeping the data in other ntfs drivers(D:, E:, F: ) on my hard disk. I can't take backups of all data in other drivers and if that data erased with ubuntu installation I will face a very big problem in future. So how to install ubuntu 10.10 only for a one drive(c: drive) without erasing the data on other ntfs drivers? and I uses nvidia 8 series graphic card and are there any special things to follow to install it's official linux drivers(.run) or is it enough to use default drivers on ubuntu.

I want to install Ubuntu (10.10) on the 1TB drive I need to unplug the SSD while installing it in order to dual boot by pressing F8 (the way I want it to be) so that Grub doesn't get installed on the SSD. What I want to know is can I partition the 1TB drive to install Ubuntu without any data corruption or anything? I have read that NTFS can lose data if partitioned with data already on it (I have no way of backing up my 100GB of files on the drive, as currently this IS my backup drive). What I want to do is have 900GB for files, and a 100GB partition (or partitions adding up to 100GB) for Ubuntu- what is the best way to do this? I don't need seperate partitions for ubuntu, can I install the whole thing to the 100GB partition and boot from it? Or do I need swap as well? I was thinking of making 900GB partition, 4GB partition for swap (if needed) and 96GB partition for Ubuntu (/ if I understand) as this is what the "erase entire drive" option creates.
