Mar 17, 2010I've tried on a couple of mailing lists to get a decent response, but it's been pretty shabby, so I thought I'd try the expertise of this fine community.I have a, relatively, ancient iMac G4 "Flowerpot" running Debian Testing and XFCE that I was using as a home music server. I write "was" because I could simply mount it using SSHFS from work, but now they have decided to become very restrictive with ports and for the life of me I can't get it working. I've already set-up GNUMP3D on it, but that also uses a port work won't allow.
So, in essence, I'm looking for suggestions on a Web-based application I could use to stream my music from home. Flash does not work on PPC, so anything Adobe-related is out of the question. Also, Java seems "iffy" at best... It's also worth note all of my music is in OGG format, so the program would have to be able to play said format.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: PS3 Media Server Does Not Start Java Conflict?
Apr 4, 2010I have been using this program for about 2 months now, but all of a sudden yesterday, it doesn't not show up on PS3. I check on my computer and it is frozen. I close it and try to restart. From then on, it never comes back. It seems like it wants to (the tray icon wants to appear but quickly disappears). I check on System Monitor and Java is running (when you hover over it it lists the program) but in the Waiting Channel it is the only program that says futex_wait_queue_me. It is also the 2nd highest memory user (49 MiB). I have done a lot of different things. Tried getting the latest beta release (which did make it pop up but would never start), I installed the new debian package (when it installed it said pms was already running), uninstalling and reinstalling JDK 6. Nothing works. I don't know what in the world would cause it to do this. It was like fine one minute, dead the next. I've tried other servers (Mediatomb won't let me access some of my drives and PS3 doesn't see it, I MythTV's front and backend stuff is way confusing).

Apr 19, 2010i run ubuntu 9.10. i have updated all installed packages. i run a 32bit 3.6 ghz intel p4 dual core with three monitors running on two video cards. all this works correctly. i am able to play video in video player and audacious2 on any monitor.
i'm trying to run a upnp media server for my house. myself and both my tenants have playstation 3s, and i would like to host music, music videos, original content, and the backup copies of legally purchased dvds over the network. i recently converted from windows xp, and all of my media files were created by vlc on windows xp, ripped with winamp, edited and rendered with sony vegas, or downloaded from videos. i have tried both mediatomb (from the repository) and fuppes (from subversion) and had the same result with both.
basically, whenever the media center tries to populate the database and search the files, ffmpeg returns an error that crashes the media center. i do not know enough to implement better error handling in the source. both media servers, when running in the terminal, eventually return the same error message when scanning my sepearate hard drive for media. (~100gb of mp3, avi, mpeg, and mp4 files)
error code: /build/buildd/ffmpeg-0.5+svn20090706/libavformat/mov.c:1456: mov_read_trak: assertion `st->duration % sc->time_rate == 0' failed.
the process then ends.the weird thing is that this does not happen when i disable mp4 files in mediatomb (although i have not figured out how to replicate this feature in fuppes) so i have reason to believe that something in the metadata for mp4 files is throwing ffmpeg off. even if the metadata is bad in the mp4 file, it shouldn't cause a crash.
i tried to compile mediatomb without ffmpeg support, but the ./configure script returned errors whenever i tried to append an option to the configure command. i then reinstalled all the ffmpeg packages in the symantec package manager and still no luck.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: RhythmBox Unable To See Twonky Media Server
May 3, 2010I have been trying to get this setup working for a day now, I have:
QNAP NAS box running Twonky 5.1.3
I can browse to it and use the web browser to see all of the media I have uploaded to it. I have a ubuntu lucid clean insalled system with rhythbox and the coherence DLNA plugin. I cannot get the rhythmbox to see the media on the server. Very briefly at one point I saw the server name appear as RB started, but it disappeared immediately. I have something like 5K songs up mostly in MP3 format.

Jul 27, 2010I have been trying to find something that does this for some time now and discussions on IRC didn't turn up anything usefull - thats why this post for a prolonged discussion I have Ubuntu Server 10.4 installed (no X) and am trying to use it as an upnp media renderer. I would like to be able to playback their music on the servers soundcard from various devices. Thus it would be nice to have the ubuntu server expose an upnp media-renderer which one can use as an output device.
Is there a suggestion on which software to use? What I already have working is an upnp media-server (mediatomb) with ampache, but this isn't really what I'd like since I don't have as much disk-space on the server as I have on the various computers.

Oct 13, 2010I have an Ubuntu server installation set up as a media server with Subsonic in a medium sized office environment. I allow uploads from all employees to the media folder on the server. As you can imagine, it's going to get a bit messy in there with multiple spellings of artist and album names for directory names, duplicate files, and incorrect filenames and tags. I was hoping I could find a script that I could run daily as a cron job to clean up the media drive. I would like to maintain a path similar to: /mnt/music/Artist/Album/Song.file

Ubuntu Multimedia :: VLC Media Player Doesn't See Files As "media Files"
Jan 22, 2010I have an NTFS volume on my system which I regularly access from within Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to play the plethora of DVD images (*.iso files) stored there. I use VLC Media Player to watch the content. For some reason, VLC's file browser only shows a small subset of the files by default. I have to select "All Files" instead of "Media Files" to see all the *.iso's.
What's this about? Since they're all the same type of file, I don't understand why some would be viewed as "media files" but others not. If the files were on a Linux-type filesystem (ext3 etc.) I would guess it had something to do with permissions, but I'm not sure how file ownership & permissions apply to a mounted NTFS volume.

I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. The thing that I am having a hard time with is allowing a couple of administrators (on Windows 7 machines) read/write access for all files/folders. Oct 16, 2010I'm on ver 9.04. I have two DVD-RW drives. The system recognizes that I have them but when I put media into them it doesn't seem to realize I have done so with the following exception. If I boot with the media already in the drive it gets recognized and mounted.
Once mounted the DVDs play perfectly.
I do not have wubi installed.
When I try to use MOUNT I got the message: No media in drive.

What media player to use and how I should set that up? I might use windows server for the shares just because I am used to it unless theres a better way. I have a pretty beefy server just waiting for media files.

Feb 19, 2010Used DeVeDe to take a Avi that was 700mb which is now a 2gb iso file which will open fine with VLC player with the custom menu I made and the movie plays fine but K3b will not burn the to the media and I tried several blank disk of the same media now and no luck. I don't have any other media to try but this same media worked fine with K3b before and recent so I don't know but I never tried it using it like this before meaning with DeVeDe.

I want to edit some video clips and present them in a professional display with the other clips I have. Ideally this would mean I could create a "title page" like a DVD cover

May 11, 2010I've been a Ubuntu user for the last 7 days and just switched from Vista.I've been loving it so far except for this tiny problem.
Amarok does not play media files at all.The pre-installed Rhythmbox with 10.04 works great.In Amarok,it isn't that I don't get sound. It just won't play. If I click a file, then click play it quickly goes through an amount of songs and then it tries to play all the songs in the playlist unsuccessfully.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and Amarok 2.3.0(KDE 4.4.2) in a 32 bit system.

May 14, 2010I have just upgraded my ubuntu dist from 9.10 to 10.04 via the Update Manager inside gnome. I spend a lot of my spare time lying in bed watching (legal) movies using VLC Media Player. I have never before the dist upgrade had any issues with this although since the upgrade I have found the VIDEO in the movie crashes usually around halfway through the movie although the audio remains fine and continues through to the end of the movie.

It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3.
If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution.
This is not an error inside VLC media player. Do not contact the VideoLAN project about this issue. After some searching around, I found a guide on setting up ffmpeg at [url] which I have followed. I am still getting the error.
Do I need to add any other codecs to make this work?

Jun 4, 2010When I put a blank rewritable media in the drive no icon appears on the desktop and if I try to burn an iso image, for example, with the option that the right finds no brasero asks to insert media and some in the unit. Another problem is that brasero leaves the locked drawer of the unit for a few minutes after erase dvd-rw media. Is there any solution to these two problems?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound And Media Players / Get That?
Jul 7, 2010Only a few minutes ago, my sound just seemed to disappear while I was listening to some Dream Theater.
The onboard sound is disabled in the BIOS as I'm using another card.
Rhythmbox won't play anything. Starting a song just leaves the progress bar sitting at the start.
Sound preferences shows everything up at full. I tried modding the volume, but I can't move it (It moves for like a millisecond then hits 100% again).
It's a C-Media sound card. It was working perfectly prior to a few minutes ago.
What's going' on here?

At home I'm using Ubuntu Lucid exclusively and I haven't been able yet to use DVD-Ram media in any userfriendly fashion yet. The only documentaion I found seems to be very much out of date.
