Is it possible to pipe audio from espeak into a microphone device?

I just need to know the device name of the front microphone ("microphone" 2" in sound properties) so that I can insert it in the following cli command for a script: "rs200_decode -m /dev/XXX -b -o /home/user/dumb.bin"
I checked the forums but I only see references to /dev/dsp, /dev/audio, etc. I don't have any of those but rather /dev/snd/controlC0, hwC0D2, pcmC0D0c, pcmC0D0p, pcmC0D1p and pcmC0D2c.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit. The sound card is a generic HDA Intel audio chip. Lspci outputs: Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller.
I have had success with operating JACK, but I am still learning... I can get audio through my microphone into ubuntu and can record into audacity without a problem, however, I do not know how to get JACK to recognize the audio from the microphone (through the normal mic jack)... any ideas how I may accomplish this so I don't need to do all kinds of file conversions and imports to set down a vocal track with the tracks I record (via USB) through JACK?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to record audio playback from an application and the microphone at the same time on recordmydesktop using pulse audio. I just can't figure out how to mix them both. I have tried a lot already and can only get either the mic or the audio playback to be recorded, not both. Can this be done using pavucontroll?
I have been search now for hours to find a solution (also here on the forum) for this and getting really frustrated now. Maybe i'm just missing something really obvious, so sorry if this is a stupid question.
how can I adjust the volume level while recording audio playback and microphone at the same time? I managed to increase the audio playback volume with PulseAudio Volume Control (Input devices -> Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo -> pressing green button "Set as fallback"), but once I click on that green button, no no microphone sound is recorded.
Details:
- using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
- recording audio with Sound Recorder
- installed PulseAudio Device Choooser and PulseAudio Volume Control
- Input devices -> Internal Audio Analog Stereo --> shows the sound from microphone

i just upgraded from Skype 2.0.0.72 to 2.1.047. Now my microphone isn't working anymore and i cannot select it in the skype options. From now on i can only select the PulseAudio server ..
So i have read some howtos for PulseAudio. They say i should starte PulseAudio Volume Control. ok.. Now i should go to the tab "Recording". This tab doesnt exist on my pc. I upgraded to the latest version of this volume control. It still doesnt exist.
I am using OpenSuse 11.0 with KDE4.3

I'm using openSUSE 11.2 KDE on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi 1536 laptop. My problem is that my microphone (I'm attempting to use a 3.5mm headset) doesn't work. Audio playback however does work through the built-in speakers and headphones.
I have gone through the SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE as suggested by oldcpu on the Welcome to multimedia sub-area sticky.

No audio input device can be found in sound preference>input but in sound preference>hardware>it shows the input webcam recorder device.

It has a mic too.I can specify video input device as /dev/video0.I specified input audio device as /dev/dsp2 ( OSS device, corresponding to USB Webcam), Now VLC throws an error, "VLC is unable to open the MRL 'alsa:///dev/dsp2'. Check the log for details".Thinking it wants an alsa device, I specify device as /dev/snd/pcmC2D0c. (got it from kinfocenter and dolphin). I have added myself to audio device so that I can read/write to the mentioned devices.I see no way of switching VLC to use OSS. And I see no information (documentation on net) on it's expected device listing for audio.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi am using ubuntu studio karmic and i have a digitech vx400 audio effects pedal which serves as an audio in/out midi in/out device via usb. i can sucessfully set it as the system sound device in system>preferences>sound for both input and output. but, when i play audio through it it only works for a few minutes before the sound stops completely. if i leave the system settings set to the internal sound card and configure jack audio connection kit to go to the usb device, i get the same results on the usb sound. a few minutes of playback at the most.i can restart sound with either "pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio --start" or "alsactl init" in either situation. just requires restarting the programs. same results after restarting. i think this is alsa related as i have both the system sound and jack using the alsa driver, but i don't truly understand the relationship between pulseaudio and alsa.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen i turn on my computer and log in i get a notification that says "Phonon: KDE's Multimedia Library -- The audio playback device HDA Intel (ALC880 Analog) does not work." and the system falls back to pulse audio.
Also, i noticed that if i wake my computer from hibernation then the HDA Intel device will begin working again.
I read through the comprehensive sound guide with no luck, this behavior seems very strange to me and im not sure what is causing it. I would much rather use the HDA Intel sound device than Pulse Audio.
I use an echo indigo audio card. When I do aplay -l I see this card, and I can ouput audio through it by specifically telling mplayer to use this (alsa) device. Now I want to use this card as default for all audio. At the moment the default is pulseaudio through the built in soundcard. How can I change this? Im running Ubuntu 10.04.

It's not a big deal but I would really rather let it be switched automatically like plug and play or something like that.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI can get sound out of my machine just fine, but for some reason, no matter what audio player I use, every time I change the song or pause playing half my speakers will kill sound and it will seem like the sound profile has reverted to Analog Surround 5.0 Output. When I check my sound configuration it still lists 5.1, and I have to select another setting then change it back to 5.1 to get my speakers all functioning again.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop then immediately upgraded to Karmic 9.10. Pulseaudio installed by default. There's no sound although the mute button is not checked and the volume slide control is at medium. lspci gives:

So, it appears that somehow the audio device controller in my laptop is not recognized or its driver disabled, possibly by pulseaudio. Sound works fine in Windows 7 part of this dual-booted laptop.
I'm running Ubuntu Maverick on an Intel H55 mobo. I have the sound configured to output through speakers on my monitor, via HDMI. That has been working fine. Last night I installed Skype (2.1.0.81) in order to chat to someone back in UK. When I go to the sound devices configuration in Skype, each of the devices (Microphone, Speakers and Ringing) only have a single choice: 'PulseAudio server (local)'.
In order to get my usb-connected phone handset working with Skype I have had to go to the main sound preferences and alter both input and output to '9980 Analog'. This works fine - I can make a Skype test call and playback my own voice. However, all my system sounds now go out on the usb phone handset - also the Skype ring goes to the handset, which is pretty useless because it can't be heard from more than a couple of feet away.
How can I make Skype use the 9980 device for voice in and out, and use the system speakers 'Internal Audio Digital (HDMI)' for the ringing, while leaving all the system sounds to go out on the HDMI output too? I'm sure that I managed to make Skype work much better on an older system (using Gutsy, or Intrepid???). It seems, to me that there is a lack of fine audio control in my system.
I recently installed Ubuntu on my HP Pavilion dv4-2012br and am really enjoying it, except that it is conflicting with my sound card. The only way I can hear some sound is going into System> Preferences> Sound> Output and selecting "Internal analog stereo audio" which makes the sound hollow and not at all pleasant to listen to music. When I mark "RS880 audio device [Radeon HD 4200] Digital Stereo (HDMI)" the sound is not played.

Just adding: I used the "Install with Synaptic Package Manager" way to do it. And i'm using a desktop version of Ubuntu.

I have a Dell Inspirion 5150. The onboard sound card was blown 3 years ago. OS is Ubuntu 8.10. I am also a HAM radio operator and use the computer for digital modes using a USB device that acts as an external sound card modem for me.
The program that I use for that is fldigi. The device is Signalink USB by Tigertronics. the device has the ability to have speakers plugged in to it. Question: Is there a way to have the computer send the audio out the USB cable to the device?
I have looked at my sound settings and there are USB devices but none of them are the one(s) that I use with my Signalink device. If it can't be done, no worries -- have not really needed it so far. Just something nice to have.
I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.
The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.
I was looking for a way to boost the microphone audio (I tried in the menu sound preferences but it did not work) and thefore I installed alsa driver and alsa mixer.Now linux can't find both input audio device and both output audio device.how boost the microphone audio?? (remember that I have just tried with sound preferences menu).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have behringer UCA202 usb card, after plug to usb, it just works , I have only small problem with alsamixer, which still shows by default my integrated HDA Intel, I could switch it by F6 or by alsamixer -c 1no problem, but I expect that default card is now plugged "USB audio", so why alsamixer recognize default audio device as HDA intel and not a USB Audio ?anyone who has two or more sound cards with the same issue ?

I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

First off, this isn't the usual "physical" feedback of a speaker being too close to the mic. This mic is part of a headset so there's no way for the output and input to overlap and cause feedback. This mic has worked perfectly for me in the past, but I recently re-installed my OS and it hasn't worked since.
It seems as if my audio out is getting redirected to microphone in. If I open up and sound recording program while I have some audio being output, the output will get echoed back in through the microphone channel, although any actual microphone input is never picked up. I can blow or scream into the mic and there's no indication at all that Linux is picking it up.
I'm running ArchLinux with ALSA. I've gone into alsa mixer and played with just about every channel in every way I can think of, and none of the options seem to fix the problem.
How should I fix this? I use my mic pretty much constantly when I'm on the computer, being without it sucks.
