Jan 16, 2010I am trying to watch a movie on tv through an s-video cable, but it's black and white, or with very fade colours. I understood that I have to change output to pal. I also understood that I can do it in the xorg.conf file, but I don't have anything like that.

Apr 2, 2009I am doing a new install of i86_64 on a system with a wide 22" monitor. The initial screen displays fine but after selecting "new install" the monitor becomes alternating black and white horizontal bands. the cursor is visible and tracks the mouse. The monitor is an Acer with fixed 37kHz horiz x 60 Hz vert. I assume that the gui is using a fixed (and different ) set of frequencies and is not plug-n-play. I just finished an i386 32 bit installation on another machine which went without a hitch.

May 30, 2010I insert my DVD into my machine. The little "waddya wanna do" window then opens, and I select "play in VLC." I then press the play option on the video menu (not the play button on the VLC controls). Then the VLC window turns black, or the part where the video is supposed to appear does, anyway. So double-clicking to get to fullscreen sometimes fixes the problem, but then I can only view it in fullscreen, not good. It didn't fix the problem this time, so I double-clicked again to get out of fullscreen. Then my whole display turns black and white. WTH? The display problem fixes on a reboot.
This happens on a regular basis when I try to play movies. My display is, right now, black and white. After I finish this post I'll restart my computer to fix the colors.Also, it should be helpful that when I move the VLC window or am going to/from fullscreen, I can see the movie for a split second, and in full color. The rest of the screen stays B & W, though.Also, for some reason, when I play a movie, VLC open two windows: one with the video, and the other with a visualization and a title bar saying "VLC (X11 output)"

May 31, 2010New install of the latest Ubuntu. Put in Tvtime and it worked straight away, sound and video, (although does not seem to want to switch between svideo, television, and composite, at least nothing seems to happen.) But it is in black and white!? Tried right-click menus nothing obvious seems to change things.

May 6, 2010I have a Sager NP5797 running Lucid (32-bit) with a BisonCam NB Pro (V4L2) webcam on /dev/video0 In Flash (like [URL]), everything works great. My video appears to both myself and others, and I see incoming video. (I am using the 10.1 RC libflashplugin.so, downloaded from Adobe's site) But in applications like Cheese, Skype, etc., I get a big blank white box where video should be: Cheese (as well as every other app I try) sees the camera on /dev/video0:
In Skype, the person I am calling sees my video perfectly fine. So my camera is "working" and sending video. But I cannot see my video, nor can I see their incoming video. It's all a big white box just like the one in Cheese in the shot above. Taking the other person out of the equation, when I go to use the "test" in Skype, it's just a blank white box too. The video will not draw for me.
Again, I do see video in Flash-based web apps that use the webcam. And other people are seeing my video. But webcam video (both mine and the incoming stream) won't "draw" for me. What makes V4L video not draw? I am using the binary NVIDIA driver for the GTX 280M chip in the laptop, and I am using Compiz. Though I tried turning Compiz off and Cheese still just showed the white box.

Feb 20, 2010I was wondering if you could help me out with this Flash problem: sometimes, Flash elements don't play in my browser window - there's just a big white area where my Flash should be. I have to close and re-open Firefox. This especially happens when I activate the "Flashblock" plugin, a very useful tool that blocks all Flash unless you click on it and choose to play it. Whenever I have that enabled, most of the time, clicking on the "play" button produces the white area where the Flash object should be. It's Karmic 64 and Firefox 3.5, Shockwave Flash 10.0.

Jan 6, 2010I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 today, and went to watch a movie on my hard drive. I typically do this with an S-Video cord on my TV. In Ubuntu 9.04 I did so simply by plugging in the S-Video cord, then pressing FN+F4 on my keyboard. Worked like a charm.
After the upgrade the same key combination just changes my resolution setting.

Feb 27, 2010I can't seem to figure out how to get the S-Video output working on my T41, and most of the info that I seem to be finding is for older versions before xrandr so files and settings don't seem to match.
I know that it's not a hardware/cable problem because this exact setup works fine under windows (even though there i'm working with a hacked video driver setup since one doesn't exist for any of the "modern" versions of windows, ati radeon 7500 (mobile))

I'm having trouble getting any output from my laptop's HDMI socket. I've had a search and can only find sound problems, mine is no visible output whatsoever.
Let me describe the setup: Laptop has a HDMI socket which I have never used before, HDTV has 4 HDMI inputs, I just bought a HDMI cable to connect the two to try it.
After connection I go to System->Preferences->Monitors and the TV is detected fine with the correct description and offers me 3 different resolutions. xrandr also works and gives me the same thing:

However none of the options display ANYTHING on the TV. The screen remains black, not even a flicker.
I have connected the laptop to the TV before using an analogue VGA (monitor) cable which worked in the same way with no problems.
Could this be an encryption/DRM/DVI problem? I have suspicions about the cable too because it is new and I haven't seen it work, but it wouldn't detect the correct TV description and resolutions would it? It was sold as an XBOX360/PS3 HDMI cable, is there a difference? It looks like a standard HDMI male-male cable.

Oct 29, 2010I am having great difficulty viewing a series of educational videos (MMS streams) in Ubuntu 10.04, which view perfectly in Windows XP. All I get is a black screen. No matter whether I use Firefox or Chrome or Opera, No matter whether with MPlayer, Totem or VLC.
I have tried everything I could find by googling (basically trying different media players and plugins) but nothing works. This is my final attempt! Anyone have any ideas, or similar problems?

Aug 24, 2010I've been running Ubuntu for about 2 years now. When I first put it on my Dell it was 9.0x. My HDMI port worked just fine to connect to my Plasma to watch movies on. I've only ever connected it 2-3 times. Since Fall '08 I haven't used it again. I never needed to.
Since that time, it stopped working. When available I upgraded to 9.04, 9.40 and now (effective 10.23.10) 10.04. It just doesn't work anymore. Neither VGA or HDMI. I can only assume S-Video will be the same story. Video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 8400m GS. Driver is version 173. I installed NVTV tv out (Nvidia Video output controller). It does nothing. When NVTV is typed into terminal, it says; Fatal: No supported video card found.

Dec 9, 2010In the control centre under multi media selector for configuring GStreamer it has Autodetect and two other setting, X Window System (No Xv) and X Window System (X11/XShm/Xv) etc. When I test the X Window System (No Xv) the test card in full screen is far better then autodetect, should I keep this setting, the reason I ask is I can't notice the difference when watching video.

Mar 15, 2011I've just installed Xubuntu 10.10 on a ThinkPad R50e and on a R51. I want to get them working as fast as possible. Of cause, all updates are done and all codecs for gstreamer have been installed, too.
Parole Media Player tells me to not be able to initialise Xv output, so no video appears on screen.
Then I've started to search for the cause of trouble. Seems to be an Intel grafics adaptor handled by the Vesa module, which I don't know how to change to the correct Intel module (which is installed, by the way).
I've googled for this issue and found few other people talking about. But there was no solution, at least none that I could understand.
Now, I would be really glad if you could help me to find a working solution during the next few days.

Jul 9, 2010Im trying to be able to output video to my tv with a low end atom cpu box(link below) running debian lenny. I realize it wont likely be true HD video. I also realize I wont be getting surround sound. My tv is a little bit older so it doesnt have a monitor input or I would have tried that. It does have HDMI and component though and i have a DVI to hdmi adapter and audio cables that will work once I have a video out solution. It does have a PCIE expansion bay but the power supply is only like 150w so i dont know that Ill be able to use a regular video card. I had considered some sort of usb output but dont know if any of that will work on linux. Any suggestions? Im pretty novice with the whole computer on my tv area and dont have alot of money to build a whole new system or i would just do that.

Today, while installing Ubuntu, I had a strange issue with my laptop in which after installation, I heard startup sounds and had no video display. After hours of frustration and about 7 install disks, I plugged my laptop into another monitor, and low and behold, it appears both of my desktops are on the external monitor. After trying to solve this issue, I decided to give the Debian Gnome live CD a try, but I now have the same issue.

Sep 11, 2011Is there a way VLC to use vdpau as video output? Mplayer and Gnomemplayer can use it and the video playback uses as little as 2-4 % CPU power even on 1080p movies. Xorg and Kwin continue to use pretty much CPU power in video playback process , I suppose there is no way to limit them or there is ?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Screen Flashes Black Before Video Play Back With VLC (ATi)?
Aug 2, 2010I'm experiencing a sudden black flash before video play back with VLC. The whole 3 screens just flash black and come back, and then the video plays fine in VLC. This doesn't happen with other media players, such as mPlayer and Totem.
I'm running an XFX Radeon 5450 (ATi) with the propriety 10.7 drivers. Running 3 17" (1280x1024) in "EyeFinity". I've had a look on the unofficial bug thingy for ati drivers for linux, and there is a bug back from 2008.[URL]...
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, of tips to start looking to try and solve my little issue, I've spent hours and hours looking though xorg, syslog and other logs in /var/log/ and nothing seems to stand out.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Uninstalling Video Card Driver / Black Screen
Jan 4, 2011I recently swapped a hard drive from another computer I was using.The previous computer had nVidia video card (i think it was 9500? something like that), and the new computer has an ATI Radeon 4200 HD video card. Now, when I boot it up on my new comp using the same hard drive, I get a black screen and my monitor just switches from digital, analog, hdmi. I'm guessing that the video card drivers are still installed, but I cannot switch back the hard drive since my other comp is far away from where I live. If I boot up with ubuntu CD however, it loads fine.
I have many important files on the previous install though, and I'm not sure how to get to it. I wouldnt mind reinstalling ubuntu as long as I can get those files back.
