I use a C-media cm6206 (or cm106) external usb sound card. But master volume does not work. So I wanted to make it work using this guide. Unfortunately asound isn't available as far as I understand?
View 1 RepliesI have essentially been raised on Windows so I have no idea how to get DVI to work in Ubuntu. I have a Ubuntu/Vista desktop with an ATI Radeon X1350 graphics card. I can get picture from DVI when I boot into my Vista partition (the computer originally came with Vista and I have a Zune which will not work with Ubuntu ). But the moment I try to use DVI on Ubuntu: I have no picture. The ATI Radeon X1350 Pro is using the open source radeon driver. I know this from the System Testing diagnostic I ran when I finished setting up Ubuntu, the log file mentioned a line: Kernel module: radeon, underneath the section about my graphics card. That is about the limit of my Linux skills for right now, so any thoughts? If you need more information about my system I can comb through that log file which is still saved in my Fire Fox history.

I would like to ask for help in making a diagnose of what could be the cause that there is no sound in my system.There is no error message while booting system. No explicit sound driver. Sound isn't muted. Sound works when using Ubuntu Live.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm still running 9.10 (Karmic) on my main box and I'm trying to find a newer version of VLC. But almost all the recent blog posts re VLC 1.1.4 point to PPAs that only support Lucid and/or Maverick.The version of VLC in the Ubuntu depositories is 1.0.2 which is not only old but has a security leak; the VLC homepage warns against using it!
I suspect the problem here is that VLC is in the middle of rolling-out hardware acceleration and there's a bunch of different versions of it now (with and without the new VA-API enabled ffmpeg). So it's a moving target. But surely there's a better alternative for Karmic users than just 1.0.2?The best I've been able to come up with is the 'Nvidia Cutting Edge Multimedia' PPA which has VLC 1.1.0ppa:nvidia-vdpau/cutting-edge-multimedia
After i upgraded to karmic i experienced that the sound of spotify was at times strange. When i started a new song there was some strange plucking sounds, can most be understood as the sound a old LP-player makes when there is dust on the record. Not much but more than enough that I can hear it and wish it wasn't there. After some time of playing the songs sometimes was totally distorted by "disturbance" and it became impossible to even hear that there was a song there. Like when you are out of reception of a radio channel.
I did some research and upgraded to the wine1.2 with "custom" pulsaudio drivers. Then the total distortion was gone, but the, always present, plocking sound still was there. I have tested adjusting PCM volume, have some volume on mono, upgrading to newer pulsaudio drivers. The same problem is when ever my dear computer i producing sound. Spotify,firefox, rythmbox and mplayer. I can't see any answers after spending some time on google. I hoped i could fix this without deleting and removing pulsaudio.
I've been using windows xp (I play chess in the chessbase server) and Ubuntu in dual boot for quite a long time with no problems. My onboard sound worked perfectly in both OS. Then I decide to buy a SB Audigy PCI sound card. It works great in Ubuntu, but there was no sounds in windows. After doing a lot of research, I read that a clean install could solve the problem. I reinstalled windows xp and the sound drivers of the sound card and alas! the sound card worked.
Then I restored grub to access Ubuntu and when I reboot to windows...I got no sounds again. So, my conclusion is that in some way the Ubuntu installation affects the sound card when working in windows. I may return this sound card. The sound card is:

I have an old Philips PCVC675K WebCam. It always worked with Ubuntu except the last karmic version. I even cannot modprobe the pwc module manually.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI spent over an hour today and over an hour last night googling and trying everything and so far no success. I found many threads with oddly similar complaints, but their solutions haven't worked for me.Last week I upgraded my system, basically a complete overhaul (in the old case). The new system is based on an ASUS MB which comes with VIA VT1708B audio onboard. I installed the latest 32-bit Linux Mint on it. The case's front audio jack doesn't work, the rear audio works but is too quiet.
Things I have tried that have not worked:Different combinations of settings in the basic sound preferences dialog, the GNOME ALSA mixer, and the PulseAudio volume control (I've probably played around with these so much that I've tried every combination)
Installed pitivi. It takes 20 minutes to put a 3-minute clip on the timeline and the sound is totally messed up. Installed lives, it loads the clip but insists there is no audio plus the black on dark gray menus are almost unreadable. Installed kdenlive, it loads the clip but playback produces a short squawk then crash, and I gather I'd have to risk destroying my sound by uninstalling pulseaudio. Someone suggested OpenShot.
Followed the instructions there:
Installed Open Movie Editor, it won't even read the clip. Now, Movie Player handles that clip (a VOB file from a DVD I had made from a miniDVB tape) perfectly as long as I don't touch the time slidebar, so I would imagine if there were a usable video editor out there something would work.
I've tried everything I can find. On Karmic I have libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4 installed, along with VLC 1.0.2 and latest Mplayer. I also installed ubuntu-restricted-extras. Of the following DVDs
Blazing Saddles
Christmas Vacation
It's a Wonderful Life

...all fail to play because of error cracking the codes in both Mplayer and VLC except #9 does play in VLC.
Does anyone know of any way to get this thing to work on Karmic? Just to be able to watch TV, not even to record? I can't seem to get it to recognize it. lsusb just shows:

When I was with Windows I used DVD Decrypter to remove CSS encryption - is there a porgramme for Ubuntu that will do this. I am not doing anything dodgy here. my daughter has bought a couple of DVD's from the states, I want to copy these to run on my Player at home.

I am running Karmic 64bit on a frankenstein desktop. I am using an old Creative Soundblaster card with the live drive front panel. Ever since I started using Karmic I have lost many functions, there are no bass and treble controls, and no other controls other than volume and balance. Am I missing some vital drivers?

I downloaded the codecs from the software center but for whatever reason, They don't work, both Mplayer and Movie player just give me error messages when I load the disks. I know the disks are being read, their name pops up and everything, but I guess it just cant read the files.

Then plug in the iPod and wait about 30 seconds, then run nautilus again by hitting Alt+F2. After I ran this and opened up banshee my iPod worked like a charm
I installed the vkeybd program to easily create some tunes, but when i push any of the keyboard buttons no sound comes out. I do have sound in programs like vlc. I thought jack and timidity may have something to do with it, but starting and clicking on things in those programs didnt get me anywhere because I dont have much understanding about them. How do I get a sound to come out of my speakers when i press a button in vkeybd?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, which borked booting on that partition. I made a fresh install of Karmic on another partition which is booting fine, but I can't get Audio CDs to work, period. They worked in Jaunty and every release before that I had installed. Data CDs work fine in Karmic. I'm using plain ol' Ubuntu 32bit. I'm not sure where to start. There have been other threads where other people had identical symptoms. Either the problem went away mysteriously on its own, or they gave up because nobody believed them. In any case, I'm beginning to wish I had stuck with Jaunty.

I've got an asus a8js laptop and since installing karmic, the built in microphone is permanently on. Every once in a while I brush my finger of the mic unintentionally and it makes some mad feedback.
I've ruled out that this is caused by pulseaudio, the problem occurs when pulseaudio is off (pulseaudio --kill) and I've set .asoundrc to go straight through the hardware.
My first thought was to check alsamixer, but I muted (capture, mic, mic boost set to 0) it in there to no avail. Consequently, any time I move a slider (any one, PCM, mic, Front...) the microphone mutes for 3 to 15 seconds and then is suddenly live again.

In all the soundcard works fine, it's just that the mic is always on and I can't seem to set it otherwise.
I decided to take the plunge and I totally replaced windows XP Pro w/ Karmic. I'm working on getting theatre mode set up as well as syncing my iphone.
for this problem I've set up dual desktop mode(both with the guide I found for Nvidia, and with ATI Catalyst control center) through the guide, the computer would freeze randomly and with CCC it seems to freeze when I start a video on the TV display.
I'm running a P4 3.2Ghz, 4G DDR2, ATI 256mb card w/ HDMI out
UPDATE: By changing the screen effects to none the computer doesn't freeze anymore
I just installed karmic on my media server. With Jaunty, everything worked fine. I tried an upgrade, and go no sound. After poking around in the forms and trying some solutions still no sound.
So I decided to try a fresh install, again, no sound. I have cheched the obvious, mixer volumes, mute, output device, etc. But I can't seem to get it to work. I poked around in the forms and I've tried many of the solutions, but still no luck.

Acer travelmate 4200, had no sound since a full install (not upgrade) of Karmic. Sound has worked in all previous incarnations of Ubuntu. When I try to play Audio CD I can hear a click from the speakers but only silence after that. CD plays OK if booted in XP or Win7. Output from aplay -l

1) Does Karmic mplayer have VDPAU support out of the box? If not, why doesn't it?
2) Does LUCID mplayer have VDPAU support "..."?
3) If Lucid doesn't, can I use the Karmic VDPAU PPA for Lucid, or much I compile mplayer myself?
4) Point me to a place with instructions on compiling mplayer with VDPAU support. If you don't know, I'll just google it.
i've seen several posts on other forums about problems similar to this but no solutions that apply to me. i've got the latest updates for karmic that i installed this week. i'm using an ibm t60 thinkpad with 01:00.0 vga compatible controller: ati technologies inc m52 [mobility radeon x1300]. i have dual monitors and firefox 3.5.8.
when i attempt to watch a movie on hulu, it appears to work for a brief moment and then freezes and the browser window goes grey. i've left it sitting like that for over 15 minutes and eventually had to force quit it.i'm able to use the gnome desktop effects and have no problems viewing other multimedia, like videos, etc. i'm very new to ubuntu and linux in general. i'm a mac head and still love mac's but have grown very fond of ubuntu in a short amount of time.
The title pretty much says it all, the sound on this system was working fine until I ran the upgrade to Lucid. I've tried everything in the standard troubleshooting guide, the sticky threads and plenty of forum searches but so far I've come up with nada. For some reason Ubuntu refuses to see my soundcard, no matter how much I twist and tweak it. It's an Asus M3A78 motherboard with an on-board Realtek ALC1200 chip (snd-hda-intel). View 2 Replies View RelatedI had taken a long break from Ubuntu, but now I'm back on it. I just installed 9.10 Karmic on my Lenovo Thinkpad R61i, and it's beautiful....except there's no sound.
I have gone through the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide, to no avail. As well, I have searched the all of the Internets, and still have no sound.

What's the right direction or give me step by step on how to do this?
