since I installed ubuntu 9.10, my video files, specially .avi, are showing up on every player with a high contrast or too much brightness... So i have to go t vlc and adjust the image... =/ I'd like to know how can I make the video files running normally as I used to do at 8.10...

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an integrated intel video and latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver(using only stable repo). Now I wanna watch high-res video. From the bits of info collected from all over internet I understood that I need to:
1.aptitude install libdrm libva.
2.compile or find the .deb mplayer-vaapi and install it.
3.add -vo vaapi -va vaapi to the mplayer command line in gnome-mplayer.
My question : is that correct or did I miss something? Do I have to compile latest libdrm and libva or the ones from the squeeze repo will be good? Do I need kms enabled, i.e. install firmware-linux-nonfree?
When i try to play HD (even with 720p) video the CPU load is almost 100%. I'm using vlc player and the movie is barely watchable. If i switch to Movie Player, the CPU load is slightly decreased, but after 2-3 minutes the audio goes out of sync, so no solution there. I have an nvidia 8600gt graphics card and the proper driver installed, every compiz effect works flawlessly without the slightest increase in CPU load and a dual core 2,1 GHz AMD processor. It shouldn't be a hardware issue.

When I put a video on - even if high definition or not I still get a studder from flash. The video plays but it keeps chopping up and you can see on some frames how the next frame moves on the bottom of the screen and the previous frame is still stuck on the top. Flash does not run smoothly at all - that is on every video. I am suppose to be on the latest flash version for linux off of addobe.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...
Some other suspicious-looking lines from the log file:
Debian 8.2 is installed to my Toshiba notebook. There is a performance issue about high resolution mp4 and mkv files. They are not played well on VLC or default media player.I don't see this issue on Windows. This computer has Intel HD Graphics 5500 and i7-5500U CPU.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:
1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?
2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.
3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!
4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?
5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.
I have just started to have a problem with Xorg it is always using at least 30% of my CPU, and the whole system does not run smooth so if I play a video it does not run smooth, it judders, also even if I drag an icon it judders across the screen. Im running Ubuntu 10.10 2.6.35-25-generic x86_64 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G98M [GeForce G105M] (rev a2)

When you do 'man bash', you'll see some words are highlighted. I'll say that the video card has used high intesity in these instances. How do I disable this video card capability? Can this only be done by recompiling the kernel? Of course, I am talking about the text consoles, i.e., the video card in text mode.
Ubuntu, in its most recent version (9.10) has stopped to support certain webcams that it previously supported with just plug-and-play simplicity. After many searches on the web, I could somehow managed to make my old webcam (Logitech QuickCam Traveler) work. Skype couldn't see it, but adding the command bash -c 'export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so; skype' to the launcher, worked the miracle.
Whatever, the image was very dark, and in a new web search I found a solution [url] As stated there, I opened the Terminal and entered:

All is OK, brightness gets up, I can finally see my face (not a great view, but I somehow got away with it) in Skype's test, but I need that change to be PERMANENT, so every time my parents open Skype (it's my parents' computer) they won't have to mess with Terminal (they're 69 and 72 years old, it's their first computer, so I CAN NOT expect them to use Terminal, they just want to open Skype and use it, as they did when they used Windows (until two weeks ago, when I finally convinced them to switch).

Using a VGA connection I can use the buttons on the monitor to control both contrast and brightness. Using dvi there is no control(no contrast control and the brightness button changes the numbers but not the actual brightness!) I cannot find the app that controls the Nvidia GPU
(it should exist as I found it on Zenwalk).
I have a very old monitor that shows too dark colours I would like to increase the brightness via software, in another distro I used gxvattr but in ubuntu doesn't work, I also tried gdcccontrol but my monitor isn't supported. What should I try ?

I am running an older machine: P4P800 ASUS Mobo, P4 2 Ghz, 3G RAM and an ATI Radeon 9000.OS: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Issues: Seems that anything that Compiz has to render the brightness is really low. CairoDock (w/ OpenGL) does not render like it does on other machines that I have, looks like garbage. I've come to the conclusion that I need to get a better video driver (Hope I'm correct here otherwise I've been going the wrong direction for awhile now).
Things I've tried through research around the net: I've attempted installing fglrx(command line style) from several tutorials I've found here and there. Most of them for older versions of Ubuntu and if I'm remembering right there have been a few significant changes lately, which may be causing my issues? Of course I've tried the easy ways: Installed all fglrx/ati/radeon related packages in Synaptics Package Manager
Checked System > Admin. > Additional Drivers before and after package installations
Ati Website - the drivers that they have are for XFree86. I don't think they can run on XOrg - it's a completely different setup? Again, I don't have a great understanding on how the back end of all this works, so bear with em.
I ran: echo options radeon modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf To disable KMS.
Rebooted - Video was much worse I then ran: echo options radeon modeset=1 > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf To re-enable KMS Rebooted again. Everything ran fine but I didn't have my Cairo Dock > which I can deal with, that's not why I'm posting.. Well, that's a good chunk of it - there's more but I don't remember most of it as I've been working at this on and off for weeks. Again, a lot of this was tried upon researching anything and everything I could find on the net - so some of it might sound ridiculous, I was just trying anything that would work!!
I'm enjoying the default 10.04 theme, but the one thing that doesn't work for me is the scrollbar. I can hardly see it. Where I can edit just the scrollbar color without changing themes completely?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWith my Kubuntu Hardy install there are plenty of settings I can change in Kaffeine but with Ubuntu Lucid I cannot adjust the brightness or add/remove items on the toolbars.
Is there some other way to change these settings ?
Kaffeine is excellent for watching and recording Dvb/T television (multiple channels etc).
When I logout out of gnome, the brightness reaches maximum level. I've tried adding a script to adjust the directory "/sys/class/backlight/intel_ backlight/ brightness" to the rc.local file. I'm not sure if it has to do with my video card but it certainly could be the case since I'm using an experimental package for the Intel graphics card.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have noticed on a couple of the newer installs I have done, that the Skydome image is faded. It appears to have about 35% lower contrast than it should. I always use the same one, I have compared it to the local file, I am a professional photographer, so I can say it has nothing to do with the image itself, but rather it is some hidden setting somewhere, as I have tried cranking up the image's native contrast, and nothing changes.This happened before, and in the course of normal compiz tweaking, it went away, but I would like to figure out where that is, as CCSM has so many settings, and it may not even be a compiz setting, but rather a system setting. I just do not know.

No linux sound drivers on Asus' site. No ubuntu 9.10 drivers on VIA site. Low sound with default drivers. I've edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with options snd-hda-intel model=3stack, but no luck. I actually had to do a sudo sh then edit it that way with vi because it was read only. Didn't do anything.
OSS, even though it's emulated *through* ALSA, consumes a microscopic fraction of straight ALSA's CPU usage. For example, when I'm playing something through ALSA with XMMS2, I'm getting about 25-30% CPU usage, but with OSS output, only 2%, tops. The same applies to any other application in which I can choose the output method. And, I'm on 10.04.
