Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting Dual Monitor Support Working In Unity With NVIDIA?

Jun 21, 2011

I have an NVIDIA 9800 GTX. I have 2 DELL monitors connect to this card, one is a 24" and the other is 21".

I am unable to use Xinerama mode with Unity, because for some reason after logging in, I get no desktop interface, only background wallpaper, and I have to force reboot.

How can I setup dual monitors in Ubuntu using Unity properly? Note that I do NOT want to use TwinView, since this results in dead space around the smaller monitor.

Debian Multimedia :: NVidia Driver Not Working With External Monitor?

Mar 15, 2010

I have a Dell XPS M1330, which has a GeForce 8400M GS GPU. The binary (sigh) nVidia driver installed is version 190.53 (installed by sgfxi). This is working well: glxgears gives me about 2600 FPS and compiz is happy. An old Philips 170B is attached by VGA cable. I was looking to set up a method of switching resolution upon connecting to the monitor when working at the desk, since I don't like the 1280x800 resolution of the laptop.

nfortunately, I can't get any output on the external monitor. It does work under Ubuntu, which installed the 180 series binary driver. (Going to an earlier driver is an option, but I want to understand the problem.) Bottom line, I want to work under Debian. As far as I know, nVidia's proprietary driver doesn't support xrandr. At any rate, with he external 170B monitor attached and turned on, I get the following:$ xrandr -qScreen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 800default connected 1280x800+0+0 0mm x 0mm

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Disable Secondary Monitor Quickly Other Than Loading Up Nvidia-settings And Disabling The Monitor Every Time?

Jun 29, 2010

Currently I have two 1920x1080 screens running in Twinview on my Geforce 275 graphics card. Want I want to do is a quick simple way of disabling my secondary monitor when playing video games or using xbmc to watch movies, etc. I've tried a few applets but they require the xandr function which I think Nvidia doesn't support.

Is there a way to disable this quickly other than loading up nvidia-settings and disabling the monitor everytime. I don't really want to use two seperate x sessions and xinerama due to the fact you can't use compositing.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Recently Stopped Working

Jul 9, 2010

My monitor recently stopped working(H/W problem)..after getting it repaired, the ubuntu system is acting weird in the sense that after running for some time,it sort of freezes and does not allow to open any new applications. On trying to open new application, the mouse curosr goes to busy mode and a new tab on task bar is displayed showing(starting 'App'),but after some 10-15 sec,the bar is gone, mouse cursor back to its idle mode and the application is never opened.REstarting the system takes it back to proper state, but after sometime-same prob..I cant open any application, not even system monitor to see whether cpu is being utilized to max.

Also,i have noticed one more thing on starting the system,i transferred 1 file(CUT FILE) from linux partition to windows partition and it got transferred successfully. After sometime, when the above prob came,i rebooted the system to see that the file is again present in Linux partition(And also windows parttion).THis is even after cutting the file and not copying.

Debian Hardware :: Monitor Working With VGA But Not With HDMI / DVI

Jan 13, 2016

My monitor (Dell U2412M) has a VGA port, a display port and a DVI port. I can connect it to my laptop with VGA, no problem, but I'd rather use one of the other ports. I have a HDMI-to-DVI cable, so I tried that. That didn't work with my laptop, so I tested this HDMI-to-DVI cable with my raspberry pi, and that works perfectly. So, the problem is probably not the cable and not the DVI port on the monitor.

What happens when I plug the HDMI-to-DVI cable into my laptop is a bit weird. It's not a blank screen or anything, but part of the messages I see during boot. The last lines on the screen (the others relate to stuff that is probably not relevant for this issue), are these:

Code:
Select all[   10.823974] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: 0x7232: i2c wr fail: -6
[   10.825122] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: 0x7244: i2c wr fail: -6
[   11.487584] [drm:intel_dsm_platform_mux_info] *ERROR* MUX INFO call failed

I have had quite a bit of trouble with my GPU on this laptop, and as far as I can tell, the laptop does not use the nvidia card but rather has defaulted to the on board intel chip. Could these issues be connected?

Ubuntu Installation :: External Monitor Not Working After 10.10 Upgrade Sony Vaio VGN-TZ398U

Oct 19, 2010

I just upgraded to 10.10 64-bit from 10.04 64-bit and my external monitor is no longer working properly. Using the "Monitors" function in preferences, it does recognize my monitor and does in fact activate it, but the total available screen real estate is only increased by 10-15 pixels (i.e. my mouse moves to the external monitor, but it stops after 10-15 pixels). Thinking that something went wrong with the upgrade, I backed up my data and did a clean install from CD after format and the problem is the same.

Software :: System Monitor (a.k.a. Task Manager) Has Stopped Working?

Jan 5, 2010

I'm running Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), and my System Monitor (a.k.a. Task Manager) has stopped working. I had been using the graphical version of the app because it was easier and faster for me to deal with. I know that there is a command line solution for this, but I also know it involves having to know the task number of the program I want to kill (I've got a game that I love to play, but only closes cleanly about 10% of the time). I've posted a couple of screen shots to show the errors... The first one is the error message itself (I have to hit 'OK' on this twice to clear it), and the second one is the resulting empty window of the System Monitor

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Updating NVidia Driver Not Working, Tried Manual, Not Working?

Sep 18, 2010

I installed it on a Dell Inspiron 531 with the GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 built in video card. From the recommend driver list I installed NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended

Well, turns out it should not have been recommended. I had restarted and all I got was a low res ubuntu logo and a boot right into a full screen terminal. Tried startx and got a no screens found, I look online for about an hour last night and decided to just reinstall, which takes a couple hours when installing all the packages.

I have done more research today and found to install the latest linux x64 driver from nVidias website, which I did, but it does not run. I followed some more instructions and it said to do a sudo chmod +x <file> which I did, and it starts to open and I get You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing.

Im starting to get a little frustrated here, guess Im just used to a lot of the ease of windows and assumed that something like installing a graphics card driver would be easy.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 8.04 Can't Get 1920x1080 From New LCD Monitor?

Oct 12, 2010

I finally decided to replace my monitor. I got a HANNspree HF225 with a native resolution of 1920x1080.

Alas, my Ubuntu 8.04 only allows me to select the 1400x1050 (50Hz) as the highest resolution.

I tried using gksudo displayconfig-gtk, to no avail. (yes, I also tried selecting Generic LCD display 1920x1080).

The strange thing is the monitor itself (via its OSD information) says it is running 1680x1050 (at H: 65.6KHz V: 60.3Hz).

Clearly, Ubuntu 8.04 can't see the real hardware capabilities of my system. My graphics card is "nVidia Corporation NV44 [GeForce 6200 LE] (rev a1)". I know it is capable of delivering the 1920x1680 because it has been previously driving 1920x1600 on a DELL P1110.

how to get 1920x1080 on my system?

General :: Monitor Not Working As Expected With LiveDistros - Screen Is Totally Dead ?

Feb 27, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire 6930g with an nVidia GeForce 9300m GS which has a broken screen. I have been using an external monitor for some time using Linux Mint, without issue.

I initially set this up with great difficulty using the small parts of the screen that would still display an image at the time. Now, however the screen is totally dead, I have since disconnected the laptop monitor in order to not cause issues.

The issue I am currently having is trying to use live distros.

I'll give you example: I boot ubuntu 9.10 32bit and it gets to the initial boot menu. I choose "Try Ubuntu..." It shows the loading screen. Screen goes blank when going to desktop

I tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a terminal, but the screen stays blank. The same thing happens with both Knoppix and Backtrack 4 as well. The display goes blank upon switching to the desktop.
