Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get Secundary Monitor Working?
Mar 3, 2010
I just got secondary monitor and I can't get it working. My graphic card is Nvidia GF GTX260 and both monitors are from Samsung. Now I tried to enable new monitor with nvidia-settings and got this error: at the same time terimanl gives me this error:
Code:
VALIDATION ERROR: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Undefined Device "(null)" referenced by Screen "Default Screen".
What should I do?
I occasionally connect my laptop to my TV and watch shows on the larger screen. After upgrading to 11.04, "Detect Monitors" no longer detects my TV. This worked in 10.10 and 10.04, and possibly in earlier versions.
I have an NVIDIA 9800 GTX. I have 2 DELL monitors connect to this card, one is a 24" and the other is 21".
I am unable to use Xinerama mode with Unity, because for some reason after logging in, I get no desktop interface, only background wallpaper, and I have to force reboot.
How can I setup dual monitors in Ubuntu using Unity properly? Note that I do NOT want to use TwinView, since this results in dead space around the smaller monitor.
I have a Dell XPS M1330, which has a GeForce 8400M GS GPU. The binary (sigh) nVidia driver installed is version 190.53 (installed by sgfxi). This is working well: glxgears gives me about 2600 FPS and compiz is happy. An old Philips 170B is attached by VGA cable. I was looking to set up a method of switching resolution upon connecting to the monitor when working at the desk, since I don't like the 1280x800 resolution of the laptop.
nfortunately, I can't get any output on the external monitor. It does work under Ubuntu, which installed the 180 series binary driver. (Going to an earlier driver is an option, but I want to understand the problem.) Bottom line, I want to work under Debian. As far as I know, nVidia's proprietary driver doesn't support xrandr. At any rate, with he external 170B monitor attached and turned on, I get the following:$ xrandr -qScreen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 800default connected 1280x800+0+0 0mm x 0mm
I have an external monitor attached trough a VGA cable to my laptop PC, with the monitor settings shown below. The problem is that when I have the external display connected, video players such as VLC or MPlayer display a black screen instead of the video, with only the sounds working. If I unplug the monitor everything works fine.
Setup Specs: Dist: Debian Wheezy Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-686 Gnome Version: 2.30.2 Laptop: Asus Eee PC 1000HE (10" LCD screen) External Monitor: LG Flatron Wide L204WT, 20'' Widescreen LCD Monitor
Currently I have two 1920x1080 screens running in Twinview on my Geforce 275 graphics card. Want I want to do is a quick simple way of disabling my secondary monitor when playing video games or using xbmc to watch movies, etc. I've tried a few applets but they require the xandr function which I think Nvidia doesn't support.
Is there a way to disable this quickly other than loading up nvidia-settings and disabling the monitor everytime. I don't really want to use two seperate x sessions and xinerama due to the fact you can't use compositing.
Basicaly I want to know what version fo Ubuntu do I use,Intel Q6600 with a nvidia chipset my dam dual monitor isnt working but thats another problem for me to sort out
I have a three monitor set-up under 9.10, the monitors are connected to a pair of nvida 512MB GT240s, two on one, one on the other. After booting, I get the logon screen but only two of my monitors have a picture; to get the third running I need to login and restart gdm within a terminal and then login again. I'm using the proprietary nvidia 185.18.36 drivers (which oddly report my cards as 1024MB GT230s), with Xinerama. My xorg is included below.
My monitor recently stopped working(H/W problem)..after getting it repaired, the ubuntu system is acting weird in the sense that after running for some time,it sort of freezes and does not allow to open any new applications. On trying to open new application, the mouse curosr goes to busy mode and a new tab on task bar is displayed showing(starting 'App'),but after some 10-15 sec,the bar is gone, mouse cursor back to its idle mode and the application is never opened.REstarting the system takes it back to proper state, but after sometime-same prob..I cant open any application, not even system monitor to see whether cpu is being utilized to max.
Also,i have noticed one more thing on starting the system,i transferred 1 file(CUT FILE) from linux partition to windows partition and it got transferred successfully. After sometime, when the above prob came,i rebooted the system to see that the file is again present in Linux partition(And also windows parttion).THis is even after cutting the file and not copying.
I have a Dell 8100 with an NVIDIA graphics card. I had previously installed Ubuntu Hardy Herron and everything worked fine. Today I upgrade to LTS. The system rebooted and the Grub boot loader displayed my list of O/S when I selected the LTS, the monitor shutdowns and displays a message about best resolution should be 1280 X 1024.
I got a Sony Vaio, with ubuntu 10.04 running on it. Everything was fine, exept for that i didnt had any sound when i wanted to listen music on ...../my pc.My sound sometimes work, sometimes it didnt. if it works, i and if i wanna listen to like pink floyd.i have a nice big monitor on my desk( actually just a small 23 or 24 inch one.) that monitor is connected to my laptop of where the lid is closed. the sound was coming from my monitor ( there boxes in it.. ) that is to connected with a wire to my laptop ( the sound )on 10.10 and 11.04 and windows 7 was the sound fine, now on 10.04 the sound isnt working on my monitor, my headphones, or my laptop itself.I dont want to change my os, or upgrade it to 10.10 or buy a new soundcard.
I just updated my Ubuntu to Maverick Meerkat and it seems that now the battery monitor doesn't work. It shoes the icon on top and the battery icon gets full while the battery charged but it doesn't say the percent, it just says Laptop battery (estimating...)
Earlier in natty this was working completely. It's only just started happening about a week ago. I don't know what changed, all I know is it suddenly stopped working. Basically the bar at the top is still there but there is black underneath. I can put windows there but I cannot see them (Just black). If I click on an indicator it looks on the bar as if it is being clicked but I cannot see the menu. I have attached a screenshot.
My monitor (Dell U2412M) has a VGA port, a display port and a DVI port. I can connect it to my laptop with VGA, no problem, but I'd rather use one of the other ports. I have a HDMI-to-DVI cable, so I tried that. That didn't work with my laptop, so I tested this HDMI-to-DVI cable with my raspberry pi, and that works perfectly. So, the problem is probably not the cable and not the DVI port on the monitor.
What happens when I plug the HDMI-to-DVI cable into my laptop is a bit weird. It's not a blank screen or anything, but part of the messages I see during boot. The last lines on the screen (the others relate to stuff that is probably not relevant for this issue), are these:
Code: Select all[Â Â 10.823974] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: 0x7232: i2c wr fail: -6 [Â Â 10.825122] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: 0x7244: i2c wr fail: -6 [Â Â 11.487584] [drm:intel_dsm_platform_mux_info] *ERROR* MUX INFO call failed
I have had quite a bit of trouble with my GPU on this laptop, and as far as I can tell, the laptop does not use the nvidia card but rather has defaulted to the on board intel chip. Could these issues be connected?
I know there are a lot of dual monitor threads.I've read them, and I even checked at the nvidia forum.I don't see something similar enough to my problem so I'm thinking maybe it's not a driver issue.I'm running F12, both monitors were working and I configured them properly and they were fine.Yesterday I installed the nvidia drivers as per Leigh's tutorial.Once I got that sorted out and rebooted, my secondary monitor was no longer registering.I checked in display settings and it does not recognize the second monitor.I tried going to system->administration->display but after I authenticate nothing happens.
I usually log out from my account, let the pc working and close the monitor. When after some hours I try to open again the monitor I get the msg "No Signal" I move the mouse I press some buttons at the keyboard but nothing.. I have to reboot again to see the monitor working.. What can I do?
I just upgraded to 10.10 64-bit from 10.04 64-bit and my external monitor is no longer working properly. Using the "Monitors" function in preferences, it does recognize my monitor and does in fact activate it, but the total available screen real estate is only increased by 10-15 pixels (i.e. my mouse moves to the external monitor, but it stops after 10-15 pixels). Thinking that something went wrong with the upgrade, I backed up my data and did a clean install from CD after format and the problem is the same.
I use a Dell advanced port replicator at home and in the office. Each is connected to a second monitor. In neither place does the monitor actually receive a signal even though the monitor seems to be detected correctly in display settings. The function-F8 key does not have any visible effect.
Oh, almost forgot. At work once when I preparing to shut down the second monitor popped on for a few seconds though it was at the wrong resolution.
I'm running Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), and my System Monitor (a.k.a. Task Manager) has stopped working. I had been using the graphical version of the app because it was easier and faster for me to deal with. I know that there is a command line solution for this, but I also know it involves having to know the task number of the program I want to kill (I've got a game that I love to play, but only closes cleanly about 10% of the time). I've posted a couple of screen shots to show the errors... The first one is the error message itself (I have to hit 'OK' on this twice to clear it), and the second one is the resulting empty window of the System Monitor
I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 which I would like to use completely with any Linux OS. I have tried to install Linux Ubuntu 10.04.1 but it appears that it doesn't recognize the external monitor and ends the installation. I have a clean hard drive that I could install but I do not know which of the two drives I should replace. I can only get into windows in safe mode and I would think this may have something to do with the problem, don't no.
I installed it on a Dell Inspiron 531 with the GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 built in video card. From the recommend driver list I installed NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended
Well, turns out it should not have been recommended. I had restarted and all I got was a low res ubuntu logo and a boot right into a full screen terminal. Tried startx and got a no screens found, I look online for about an hour last night and decided to just reinstall, which takes a couple hours when installing all the packages.
I have done more research today and found to install the latest linux x64 driver from nVidias website, which I did, but it does not run. I followed some more instructions and it said to do a sudo chmod +x <file> which I did, and it starts to open and I get You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing.
Im starting to get a little frustrated here, guess Im just used to a lot of the ease of windows and assumed that something like installing a graphics card driver would be easy.
I finally decided to replace my monitor. I got a HANNspree HF225 with a native resolution of 1920x1080.
Alas, my Ubuntu 8.04 only allows me to select the 1400x1050 (50Hz) as the highest resolution.
I tried using gksudo displayconfig-gtk, to no avail. (yes, I also tried selecting Generic LCD display 1920x1080).
The strange thing is the monitor itself (via its OSD information) says it is running 1680x1050 (at H: 65.6KHz V: 60.3Hz).
Clearly, Ubuntu 8.04 can't see the real hardware capabilities of my system. My graphics card is "nVidia Corporation NV44 [GeForce 6200 LE] (rev a1)". I know it is capable of delivering the 1920x1680 because it has been previously driving 1920x1600 on a DELL P1110.
I'm running on 10.10 and planning on getting an usb -> vga adapter for my monitor. I've read some threads where many people seem to have troubles ... But all these threads are out of date! so my question is: does anyone know which usb-vga adapter works on 10.10? (or what you have to do to get a specific adapter working)
I have an Acer Aspire 5742Z with an Intel HD Graphics card and if I connect an external monitor I have no troubles using RHELS 5, but nothing on my main laptop monitor.
I have an Acer Aspire 6930g with an nVidia GeForce 9300m GS which has a broken screen. I have been using an external monitor for some time using Linux Mint, without issue.
I initially set this up with great difficulty using the small parts of the screen that would still display an image at the time. Now, however the screen is totally dead, I have since disconnected the laptop monitor in order to not cause issues.
The issue I am currently having is trying to use live distros.
I'll give you example: I boot ubuntu 9.10 32bit and it gets to the initial boot menu. I choose "Try Ubuntu..." It shows the loading screen. Screen goes blank when going to desktop
I tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a terminal, but the screen stays blank. The same thing happens with both Knoppix and Backtrack 4 as well. The display goes blank upon switching to the desktop.
