Is there anyway to get more options for desktop resolution? The max I have available right now isn't high enough. Ive read a couple of different ways to do this, but nothing that I have been able to follow.
I was playing around with the NVidia settings control panel today and I saw that its Resolution dropdown was giving me options for
1680*1050 1920*1080
My monitor supports up to 1440*900. When I selected one of the higher resolutions, it didn't look very sharp, and the text was somewhat fuzzy and lacked clarity. Was this rendering being done by the graphics card but 'compressed' by the monitor?
The status said 'switched to metamode'. I tried searching but found nothing - what exactly does MetaMode mean? I'm more interested in understanding what was happening, only experimenting with the higher resolutions. What monitor and resolution do you have?
I have followed this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...lay+resolution And when I restart it goes back to having the edge of my window (scrollbar) cut off. I added the increase_resolution.sh to my startup menu but I guess I don't know the command to MAKE it start at startup. (That is what "command" means in the "Edit startup program" menu, correct?) If I go into usr/local/bin and click run it works, but if I can execute it automatically, that would be great.
Also, I have added an account(?) for my daughter and when she is finished and I try to log her out the display goes nuts and does not correct itself. I assume it has to do with this since when I restart the machine (and the script isn't running) the picture is fine again. Is there a conflict between the two accounts and this script? I'm sorry if this is not making sense, I know what I want to say, but don't have the lingo/jargon down.
I have a weird problem that after increasing the screen resolution from 1024x786 (4:3) to 1280x900 something (also 4:3) that both top and bottom panels have disappeared. I am not familiar with the keyboard shortcuts to much but managed to get a terminal running so I should be able to do some command line stuff but as I am not too familiar where to edit perhaps someone can give me some pointers.
I guess first step is to restore the resolution to the original. Anyone any ideas?
I have set up my Ubuntu virtual machine and am trying to adjust the screen resolution because it's stuck at 800x600 presently and there are no higher resolution options. I've looked at numerous similar forms and tutorials online and they all seem to involve editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf. However, for whatever reason, this file seems not to exist on my machine. I found another tutorial on how to add a screen resolution using xrandr --addmode which added the resolution I want to the list that appears when I type the command xrandr, but when I try to apply it I get an error about CRTC 262 failing.
I have yet to install Ubuntu on a machine that shows screen resolution options higher than 1024x768. Is there a (GUI) way to turn on the missing options? I'd rather not have to go into that while xorg.conf thing if I don't have to. In other operating systems, I load it and set the resolution to what I want, they just show up. Why is it so hard in Ubuntu (and most Linux's in general)?
I am a first time user and recently installed 9.10 from a LiveCd then immediately upgraded to 10.04 LTS. I had no black screen problem, but my resolution is stuck at 640x480 with no other options. I upgraded my driver to NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.31 and the resolution remains the same. I have a Geforce GTS 250 and an Acer H233H capable of 1920x1080_75.

I have tried entering a CVT generated modeline to the xorg file but it did nothing.
I have a desktop with nvidia 9300 connected to a 37" LG hdtv lcd with a VGA analog cable. I'm using this machine as a media center. Up until now it had a windows XP and (besides the fact that it had windows) it work with the correct resolution - 1920x1080. I've installed Ubuntu (the latest available) after to many crashes during hd movies...
I installed the nvidia restricted drivers (the display is plain black otherwise) and my tv is being recognized as a CRT monitor. Guess it's because I'm using the vga connector instead of the dvi one. The problem is that the highest resolution it let me choose is 1024x768. I tried to mess around with the xorg.conf but i discovered it doesn't exist.
I finaly got this nVidia driver installed, and for a while it worked just fine. But then all of a sudden when I booted up again, my resolution is 640x480. So im thinking, hmm thats odd, no big deal ill just go to system->preferences-> monitors and change the resolution back. Well when I get there I find that I only have 2 options, 649x480, and 320x240. So I did some research and tried editing my /etc/X11/xorg.conf: Code: # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 260.19.21 (buildmeister@builder103.nvidia.com) Thu Nov 4 20:57:26 PDT 2010
I use slackware 13.0 64bit and VGA EN9400GT, I have two monitor samsung that is: SNX(CRT-0) && 943SNX(CRT-1) series, i had try setting it in nvidia X server settings but the resolution as CRT-1 only have 2 options that is: 640x480 & 320x240. this is my xorg.conf # nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings # nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder58) Fri Mar 12 02:13:46 PST 2010
I have recently installed Unbuntu Desktop 10.10 on a partition alongside my normal Windows 7 x64 install. I expected to have only one OS boot menu which I would be able to edit via msconfig.exe in Windows. However I have two seperate sets of boot menus. The first one contains a bunch of different Ubuntu boot options and also contains an option to boot to Windows 7 (this is last in the list).
The first boot menu defaults to Ubuntu and is on a short timeout. I want to change this to default to Windows 7 and increase the timeout.Google tells me to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and although I do have a grub folder I don't seem to have a file called menu.lst: Change default operating system at boot
Trying to install the driver for my intel chipset graphics, I edited my xorg.conf and probably did something wrong. Because everytime I log in, desktop icons appear very big, because of the low screen resolution. I fixed and set the screen resolution to normal scale for my display, but when I reboot, the screen resolution returns to its original scale with big desktop icons irritating me.
After upgrade to ubuntu 10.04 my screen resolution become 800x600 and in 'Monitors' I see only 2 options 800x600 and 640x480. but before upgrade I had much higher resolution in 9.04
I have a 26 inch screen in my living room that supports 1920 x 1200 resolution. i would like to use that resolution, but I am not able to read the menu and see the icons because they are to small using standard values. How can I resize the desktop for beter readability?
Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 boots with disconnected monitor with a screen resolution of 1024x786 ... which in fact is great - other distributions won't even boot ...
How can I change this resolution? ... cause I'am operating my system via VNC and preferably set it to something higher.
So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.
On my desktop with Squeeze the resolution is all different when I booted up this morning. It used to be something like 1680 x 1050 and now the highest available under system > preferences > monitors is 1360 x 768. I don't believe I have had any xorg.conf file on here since installation. There were a fair number of updates yesterday but I can't figure out what the source of this might be. My system is multiboot, though nothing but Squeeze has been booted for months.
I checked a different old linux distribution and it had the same problem but with even lower resolution. It shares the same home partition which has Gnome settings on it. Then I checked the w vista boot and even it had a similar problem of low resolution, though I was able to fix it by hand, selecting the higher resolution. So I can't figure out if the source of this problem is hardware, software, or what. I've checked all the connections and they seem tight.
The last update for 10.04 has really screwed my desktop. Several of the icons are off the bottom of the screen. All icons are too large. Can't adjust the screen resolution. Panel at the bottom when placed in autohide is so sensitive that it is almost impossible to use. Jumps up and down like a flea on a hot stove. I have reduced the sensitivity of the mouse to the minimum with no effect. There is no excuse for so many troublesome updates. The problem with using an external monitor with a laptop has never been resolved by Ubuntu.
The monitor is a dell 2009 w (16:10 with around 1680x1050 IIRC) I have a fujitsu desktop with the intel core i5 CPU. the crux is the i5 has an integrated GPU. hwinfo says 'clarkdale integrated graphics controller' and yast tells me the same too, knowing the monitor model as well (with correct resolution) So we have an intel GPU ... but the resolution of the kde desktop is always the 1024x768. sax2 do not accept any other resolutions - he knows only threee, one larger at 1280x1024. But even if i try to turn it on he falls back to 1024x768. this is independed from runlevel 3 or 5. the /etx/X11/xorg.conf knows the monitor and the two modes 1024 and 1680 - but everyhwere else it seems that it is unknown, using default vesa mode... the gfx tools seem to ignore the ability of the higher resolution.
I want to use 1920x1080 in the virtual consoles, with:
Debian Squeeze; proprierary ATI drivers.
Switching back to the open source drivers, it works automatically, but I got no clue with these ones. Someone say I should use uvesafb by modifing initramfs accordingly.
I use a desktop with an unsupported VIA graphic card which lucid cannot find resolution higher than 800x600so I have to use generic video driver to get resolution higher then 800x600. My question is, which generic driver is better, vesa or fbdev or any other generic driver.
So the thread title kinda sums it up. If i have eth186 and i reboot I have to open wicd and change it to eth187 get connectivity. I'm currently at eth200 so this has been a problem for a while.
Problem with lowering brightness and increasing it, When I press button to lower brightness it doesn't remember, but when I set it with power management it is fine.
i got low space left on my home folder .. i installed ubuntu and set home folder's size to 20 gbs and 70 gbs for my "/" partition , 2gbs for swap.Is there a way to increse those 20 gbs ? maybe take a lil from my "/" partition?
