Ubuntu Multimedia :: Gecko-mediaplayer To Play Divx Movies On The Web?

Dec 22, 2010

I was wondering if there's another way than gecko-mediaplayer to play divx movies on the web. In chromium gecko sometimes freezes, usually when only 10 minutes are left from the movie and that's just freaking annoying, and you can't fast forward or backward also. Though it has some good things too I would like to know if there's an alternative for it in chromium, something like using vlc as in firefox.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Streaming With Gecko-mediaplayer Plugin

May 23, 2011

First the issue is that when streaming long videos the playback would suddenly stop and I would need to restart playback manually and drag the progress bar to the correct position to resume playback. I think this is because buffering is not keeping up.

I would like to find a way to configure gnome-mplayer so that playback would just pause when buffer is running low and resumes as it grows, is that possible?

In order to do this I have been playing with the cache setting in gnome-mplayer.

Here are a few questions and observations.

1) In gnome-mplayer there are two cache settings, one go under the Preference > Mplayer tab, the other under Preference > Plugins. What is the difference?

2) I notice that if I set the plugin cache to be minimum then playback will not start until the 20% mark is reached, iit will take longer to start and the playback will last longer before buffer runs out. On the other hand if plugin cache is set to some large value then playback will start almost instantly (~ 1%) but also stops very quickly.

The question is 20% of what? I thought it means 20% of cache size so it should take longer to fill if the cache is set bigger, this seems to be the other way around.

3) With audio stream (say radio) it seems to be the opposite, if plugin cache is small then playback starts immediately, if it is big then it takes longer.

I would like to make sense of this and understand the logic behind it

P.S. Gnome-mplayer in Natty (as oppose to earlier versions) actually has too cache size options under Preference > Plugins but they don't seem to behave independently, for example, I set video cache to be large and audio cache to be small then according to 3) above (and the small audio cache) audio playback should start instantly but instead it takes a while so the size of the video cache has an effect even without video streaming.

Debian Multimedia :: Gecko-mediaplayer Vs Totem-plugin

Does gecko-mediaplayer uses gstreamer codecs such as gstreamer0.10-base-plugins gstreamer0.10-good-plugins gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg or is it only totem-plugin that does? I it necessary to have gstreamer codecs installed if you only want to use gecko-mediaplayer?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: DivX Movies Only Playing As Root?

I cannot play DivX Movies with my Totem-Plugin in Firefox. But it only doesn't work with my User-Account. When I log in as root, it works without a problem. I'm assuming that that the problem lies somewhere in a config file that is different between my user account and my root account. However I'm pretty new to Linux so I don't know where to search.

My System:

Firefox 6

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rip DVD To Play Divx (avi) On PVR?

Jun 10, 2010

I boought some cartoons for my granddaughter on DVD. I want to put them on my LG PVR HDD/USB which plays Divx (.avi) Purely for storage and ease of access.

I've tried DVD::rip which creates a VOB file and I've tried converting this with Avidemux (qt) but the file it creates, although avi doesn't play - wrong codec? It doesn't recognise the vOB file.

I tried ripping it with Acidrip with the various codecs available, it created avi files but none would play, again PVR reports Wrong codec?

Am I missing something? Any other open source apps that will do it?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 9.10 - Unable To Play DVD Movies?

Mar 13, 2010

I'm able to open DVD data discs, it's just playing DVD movies which is the problem now.

I've followed the official ubuntu guide on this and it hasn't worked. Even with all the numerous posts regarding the matter I'm still unable to find a fix.

Thus I'm posting here. If I can't get this to work I'm fooking back off to Windows because I've wasted far too many hours as it is.

I'm running P4 2.4 Ghz, NEC 2500a DVD-RW drive. I've also got two other DVD drives, a Pioneer slot drive which I get the exact same problem and another one which I haven't tested yet as it appears to be a software problem.

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Play Downloaded Videos/movies (non-copyright)

Feb 22, 2010

I have been away from Linux in general and Ubuntu since 2006, but now wish to make Linux, and probably the Ubuntu distribution, my main operating system, especially for the Internet. I have been using Open Office since version 1.0, so no training or migration is necessary there. However, I have one challenge with my Ubuntu 9.1 ... movies which play under Windows will not play in Ubuntu. Under Windows Firefox needs Adobe Flash Player 10 to play these videos ... is there some open source software that will give Ubuntu Firefox the same capability?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Play Movies In Dual Monitor Setup

Jul 22, 2010

I recently got a signal conversion box so I could route my netbooks monitor-out port to my TV. The idea being that I could effectively set the TV up as a separate monitor for watching movies on whilst I worked using the netbooks own monitor. It seemed to work initially, the Monitors dialog box could easily detect and setup the TV as if it were just an external monitor however I can't seem to play any kind of video on either screen when this is set up. All I get in Totem, Mplayer, VLC and skype is just a black area within the applications window. The sound works fine so this is clearly just a video problem.

It only seems to occur when I configure the system to use the TV as a separate monitor. If I tell it to display the same thing on both monitors all video output works fine.

All my downloaded divxs, using WIndows, can be plaid on my home cinema (with divx-player). But when i download a movie, using Ubuntu, even it is a divx, it will not play on my home cinema.

I think it's not the fault of my divx-player, but maybe it has something to do with Ubuntu?

hate it using windows for downloading some movies.

My home theatre is from Samsung, but that has nothing to do with it, I think.

Software :: Can't Play Movies On An External Monitor

Apr 12, 2010

Im trying to use my laptops with an external monitor. ThinkPad T60 with Mobility Radeon X1300, and Slackware 13.0 works flawlessly. Unfortunately I encountered problems concerning ThinkPad T40 with Radeon Mobility 7500, Slackware 13.0, and Linux Mint 8. I tried to play movies using MPlayer, Xine, and Totem. In all cases I can watch movies on the laptops LCD but on the monitor instead of a movie I see blank blue video screen.

I found here an old bug report concerning similar problem. Ubuntus users of machines with Radeon 7500 updating systems from Feisty to Gutsy reported problems with playing movies. Some further information I found here.

In the above threads SteveGotthardt and eliza reported that the problem disappears after switching from 16-bit to 24-bit color depth but desperately-trying-to-go-ubuntu reported it doesnt work for him. User anewguy suggested to run two instances of the same player to test whether its an overlay problem and Roy Kimbrell wrote he had to run two different programs to perform that test. User tgwit didnt encounter any problems with MPlayer and VLC, and solved the problem with Kaffeine changing video driver to xshm.

I tried all these methods. In my case changing color depth from 16-bit to 24-bit helped nothing. I was also unable to run two instances of the same or two different movie players to ensure its the overlay problem. I switched Xine to the advanced mode and changed the video driver to xshm but in result the movies dont play smoothly and pictures are visibly pixelizated. I can also use MPlayer with x11 video driver it plays movies on the external monitor but doesnt allow to scale the pictures to full screen. Both these alternatives arent satisfactory.
