View 2 RepliesI was wondering if there's another way than gecko-mediaplayer to play divx movies on the web. In chromium gecko sometimes freezes, usually when only 10 minutes are left from the movie and that's just freaking annoying, and you can't fast forward or backward also. Though it has some good things too I would like to know if there's an alternative for it in chromium, something like using vlc as in firefox.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot play DivX Movies with my Totem-Plugin in Firefox. But it only doesn't work with my User-Account. When I log in as root, it works without a problem. I'm assuming that that the problem lies somewhere in a config file that is different between my user account and my root account. However I'm pretty new to Linux so I don't know where to search.
My System:
OpenSuse 11.4
Firefox 6
Totem Browser-Plugin 2.32 with GStreamer 0.10.32
I boought some cartoons for my granddaughter on DVD. I want to put them on my LG PVR HDD/USB which plays Divx (.avi) Purely for storage and ease of access.
I've tried DVD::rip which creates a VOB file and I've tried converting this with Avidemux (qt) but the file it creates, although avi doesn't play - wrong codec? It doesn't recognise the vOB file.
I tried ripping it with Acidrip with the various codecs available, it created avi files but none would play, again PVR reports Wrong codec?
Am I missing something? Any other open source apps that will do it?
I installed VLC on SuSe 11.0 but it isnt playing .avi movies, it gives this error but plays soung no video "No suitable decoder module:VLC does not support the audio or video format "mp4v". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this."I have tried the options for dowloading divx codecs completed successfully but "sudo apt-get update" gives an error "bash apt-get". commamnd not found.

All my downloaded divxs, using WIndows, can be plaid on my home cinema (with divx-player). But when i download a movie, using Ubuntu, even it is a divx, it will not play on my home cinema.
I think it's not the fault of my divx-player, but maybe it has something to do with Ubuntu?
hate it using windows for downloading some movies.
My home theatre is from Samsung, but that has nothing to do with it, I think.
which program can play divx with XSUB subtitle? I've tried movie play and VLC ! didn't work?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWell, I have a problem. I can't play any movies (.avi, .mpg, .wmv) with any reproductor. Everytime i open a movie with any player, the player closes immediately. I try with VLC "Tools --> Preferences --> Video --> Display --> Output" and i can see movies, but with a very very bad quality and the films stopped very times.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with streaming divx videos in Firefox 3.6 on openSUSE 11.2. Every time I try to load a divx video Firefox ends up freezing, ultimately leading to dialog box giving me the option to terminate Firefox. No matter what plugin I try to use it's the same problem. I've tried mplayerplug-in, which shows a gray background with the Mplayer logo where the video should be but it keeps buffering, once I press play it freezes. I tried the vlc browser plugin which doesn't seem to even recognize anything and I tried gecko-mplayer, which didn't even show the logo and buffering. I tired removing Firefox and all the plugins and tried installing them again to no avail.

That being said, we have a ton of kid movies we want to try to burn to the computer and share those to the XBox. I know that Windows has a way of sharing files using Windows Media Player and sharing to the XBox, but I wasn't sure if there was another way.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI can play many of my DVD movies in linux but there are some DVDs that won't play and the Available Devices notifier doesn't show up when I load these DVDs.
The DVDs that won't play in linux works fine in windows and my tabletop dvd player.
I do have libdvdcss2, libdvdread4 and other modules to play both encrypted and non-encrypted DVDs.
Like I said, I can play many of my dvd movies in linux with only a few that don't. Has anyone experience this situation in linux with some of your own DVD movies?
I'm able to open DVD data discs, it's just playing DVD movies which is the problem now.
I've followed the official ubuntu guide on this and it hasn't worked. Even with all the numerous posts regarding the matter I'm still unable to find a fix.
Thus I'm posting here. If I can't get this to work I'm fooking back off to Windows because I've wasted far too many hours as it is.
I'm running P4 2.4 Ghz, NEC 2500a DVD-RW drive. I've also got two other DVD drives, a Pioneer slot drive which I get the exact same problem and another one which I haven't tested yet as it appears to be a software problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIm trying to use my laptops with an external monitor. ThinkPad T60 with Mobility Radeon X1300, and Slackware 13.0 works flawlessly. Unfortunately I encountered problems concerning ThinkPad T40 with Radeon Mobility 7500, Slackware 13.0, and Linux Mint 8. I tried to play movies using MPlayer, Xine, and Totem. In all cases I can watch movies on the laptops LCD but on the monitor instead of a movie I see blank blue video screen.
I found here an old bug report concerning similar problem. Ubuntus users of machines with Radeon 7500 updating systems from Feisty to Gutsy reported problems with playing movies. Some further information I found here.
In the above threads SteveGotthardt and eliza reported that the problem disappears after switching from 16-bit to 24-bit color depth but desperately-trying-to-go-ubuntu reported it doesnt work for him. User anewguy suggested to run two instances of the same player to test whether its an overlay problem and Roy Kimbrell wrote he had to run two different programs to perform that test. User tgwit didnt encounter any problems with MPlayer and VLC, and solved the problem with Kaffeine changing video driver to xshm.
I tried all these methods. In my case changing color depth from 16-bit to 24-bit helped nothing. I was also unable to run two instances of the same or two different movie players to ensure its the overlay problem. I switched Xine to the advanced mode and changed the video driver to xshm but in result the movies dont play smoothly and pictures are visibly pixelizated. I can also use MPlayer with x11 video driver it plays movies on the external monitor but doesnt allow to scale the pictures to full screen. Both these alternatives arent satisfactory.
I have been away from Linux in general and Ubuntu since 2006, but now wish to make Linux, and probably the Ubuntu distribution, my main operating system, especially for the Internet. I have been using Open Office since version 1.0, so no training or migration is necessary there. However, I have one challenge with my Ubuntu 9.1 ... movies which play under Windows will not play in Ubuntu. Under Windows Firefox needs Adobe Flash Player 10 to play these videos ... is there some open source software that will give Ubuntu Firefox the same capability?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't play movies when I have browsers open. I am not sure if it is the browser, or what. I ran totem, and vlc in a terminal, and it says insufficient resources when I try to open a movie (see snapshot).
I also took a snapshot of my system monitor. I am not sure what resources it is talking about?
I recently got a signal conversion box so I could route my netbooks monitor-out port to my TV. The idea being that I could effectively set the TV up as a separate monitor for watching movies on whilst I worked using the netbooks own monitor. It seemed to work initially, the Monitors dialog box could easily detect and setup the TV as if it were just an external monitor however I can't seem to play any kind of video on either screen when this is set up. All I get in Totem, Mplayer, VLC and skype is just a black area within the applications window. The sound works fine so this is clearly just a video problem.
It only seems to occur when I configure the system to use the TV as a separate monitor. If I tell it to display the same thing on both monitors all video output works fine.

I just built a new Linux box & cannot get Movies (dvds or files) to play properly.

Mplayer playback is ok but audio & video are way out of sync.

I think it might be a RADEON driver issue because my Mandriva-2009.1 uses X.org version: 1.6.1 & maybe those drivers (radeon_drv.so) don't fully support the ATI Radeon HD 4200 GPU. I know there is a prorietory driver (fglrx) but before trying it I'd like to here what you think. Here is some relevant info about my computer:

Sorry this post is so long. I know it isn't easy to sift thru a long post because that is exactly what I've been doing this past week while try ing to get a solution.
I'm building a cheap htpc for my garage so I can watch the news, listen to music and browse a few car forums when needed. Here are the specs I am looking at:
2 512mb ddr2 800
AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W
500GB sata2 or 32gb ssd drive
Will Ubuntu be able to use a ssd? If so this box can pull movies in from my server. Which distro will play movies, watch live tv, and play music the best on the specs I provided?
I have been going through all the help files I can including here. I just can't get it going. I will post any info just give me a command and I will post results. I just want to be able to play movies and music and stuff.
