I've recently upgraded my broadband from a 1Mbps to a 10Mpbs from the same ISP. As such there is no change of hardware.Tried downloading a Linux iso from my laptop and is getting a very good download speed. However, noticed that when I am downloading the iso, all the bandwidth is taken up by the download. Even my browser is unable to refresh or load a new webpage. Boot into Win7 (same laptop) and the webpage is ABLE to load. Tried the same in my netbook (openSUSE) and the webpage is ABLE to load. Tried the same in my Debian desktop and the same problem returns, while downloading files (iso or video) all the bandwidth is taken by the download. Browser unable to refresh. Computer connected to the same wireless network is also deprived of the bandwidth. So the bandwidth (from the wireless router) is totally taken up by the downloading Debian laptop or desktop.

I created a the class like this for shaping the packets with a specified bandwidth rate.....
tc qdisc del dev eth0 root
tc qdisc add dev eth0 root handle 1: htb default 15
tc class add dev eth0 parent 1:0 classid 1:1 htb rate 750kbit ceil 750kbit
tc class add dev eth0 parent 1:1 classid 1:3 htb rate 600kbit ceil 750kbit prio 0
For Our Requirement:-
I dont want to specify the bandwidth rate strictly like this rate750kbit ceil 750kbit,based on whatever speed is coming which should allocate the bandwidth rate for particular class...I need one application for finding the upcoming bandwidth & Is any other method is there for specify the bandwidth rate in a classes.

I'm considering getting a new motherboard in the future that has a pci-e x16 slot, but the slot only runs at x4 bandwidth.I will be using a 8800GT, so my question is will the x4 bandwidth have any detrimental performance hit when playing HD videos using VDPAU (H.264 codec)?

We have a sipmle office network set up that we also use use to connect to the internet, however of late the number of users has increased thus slowing internet access. Bandwidth upgrade is not an option thus i have to do bandwidth shaping on our linux router. The question is how do set the squid configs to allow certain IP's range a certain percentage bandwidtheg 60% and furthe divide the rest. Alternatively how can allow certain IPs to have higher bandwidth access.

I'm using Ubuntu since some month and lovin it. Only one thing with Rhythmbox and my HTC mobile phone running Win mobile 6.1 is annoying: The mobile device is never recognised as a music player nor as a usb device so I can't load music via Rhythmbox. Ubuntu recognises it as umts-modem which I like and would like to maintain. But is there any way to load music on it at the same time? I've already tried different settings on the devices usb-to-pc settings menu, but this only switches on and off the modem functionality but doesn't make ubuntu recognise the device as usb or music player.

One problem is that the phone may enforce 64kbps for ringtones but not for Music Player. Then you would have an mp3 listed but it would not play as a ringtone when you sample or use it. Or a phone only takes mp3, not m4a. Or only m4a. Or only Very Low quality, 64kbps. I pick a 30 second clip from an mp3 in Audacity and save that to mp3. Then I run SoundConverter and set preferences to Very Low quality mp3 output. Audacity must be able to change bitrate but I have only used it once and didn't see bitrate options. Convert to 64kbps. Save to my phone's microSD chip. I had problems with impossible to delete files when I used bluetooth so I pull the chip out and insert it into a usb card adapter to load the file into Ringtones.
It might be worth mentioning that I have a couple of new Samsung phones and it takes several hacky things to make external cards work. R450 Messenger formats the cards, but the other Samsung keypad phone on Cricket needs my R450 to format the 8G microSD card for it. Then if I bluetooth the files in, all kinds of funky things happen if I try to delete from either end so I just put the card in the usb reader.

I have ubuntu 10.04 on an acer aspire with the Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller. According to glxinfo | grep direct, direct rendering is enabled. I'm trying to watch some anime films in .mkv format. I have tried vlc and the stock ubuntu player. The video is choppy with lag between audio and video. How I can diagnose the problem?

It gets stuck at the splash screen(the ubuntu logo) However it can boot in failsafe graphics mode and it boots with no problem if my second display is connected. It freezes if I try to change my display settings and it tells me my graphics card is not recognized. I'm using Lucid Lynx. I tried to do a fresh start but grub loads before the ubuntu cd and/or usb drive.

About a year ago, I installed ubuntu on my ThinkPad X61, which was running windows. I basically just overwrote the hard drive, assigning one partition to the install. The graphics have always been a little buggy when it comes to 3d rendering or flash. Flash graphics flicker a lot and 3d rendering leaves trails or doesn't show up at all. Is there a way to configure the graphics card? I'm completely unexperienced when it comes to graphics cards and don't know where to start. I don't even know how to access its settings.

I've installed 9.10 and wish to use the nvidia-glx-173 driver as recommended by jockey. Using the jocky GUI just hangs at 100% cpu, a significant portion of which is the cdrom process; I've tried installing the package directly in aptitude and get the error:
Code:
Media Change: Please insert the disc labeled 'Ubuntu 9.10 _Karmic Koala_ - Release i386 (20091028.5)' in the drive '/cdrom/' and press [Enter]. The installation disc (standard x86 disk from shipit) doesn't satisfy it. How do I get aptitude to just download it from online repositories?

Using 64 bit 10.4 and have 2 problems.
The first was I couldn't get the amazonmp3 download tool to work.
It complained about missing/wrong libboost* libraries.
There may be a better way of fixing this, I have no idea, but what worked for me was this:
I had spare machine running 9.10 so I installed the amazonmp3 loader on it and did the getlibs to make it work.
Once done, I copied the /usr/lib32/libboost* files over to my 10.4 machine, ran getlibs /usr/bin/amazonmp3 and it went in clean. It now works : )
My second problem that I am working is that gdesklets does not start. Still looking at that.

I recently downloaded ubuntu 10.4 and have recently solved my network problem. I enjoy listening to music, and I want to download it... but how!!!!! I have a firefox browser and have tried to download mp3 files (usually off beemp3). Once I press download it immediately brings me to a new window or tab and just plays it for me. There is no download no matter what application I install for linux or firefox. Is it just linux that doesn't allow me to download mp3 files or is it something to do with firefox?

On Lucid with Sun Java installed (and open source cousins removed), I've installed Vuze and opened the incoming port in my firewall. All the configuration and tests run fine, except..*The links on Getting Started page don't work.*Search doesn't work.*Even from the Vuze HD Network tab, I can click to download and nothing happens. I have Vuze installed on a Windows machine wired to the same router and the application there worked fine, right from the start. What more do I need to do to make it work on Lucid?
