View 1 RepliesFirst I go to the following URL to download the latest version of VLC Player, which I greatly prefer to Totem or any other standard Linux video/audio player: http://www.fileguru.com/Movie-Player/download. After I click on the "Download" link, a new window appears which asks me if I want to 1) Open with Archive Manager (default) or 2) Save File. There is a drop down arrow next to the first choice which only gives "Other..." as the only other choice. Well, if I choose the first option, the download appears as an .exe file in the "Downloads" window.
A window with "Download Error" in its Title Bar appears with the following message in it: "/tmp/VLC_Player_Setup-3.exe could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences." I don't even know yet how to even open up an .exe file in Linux, despite repeated research.
Crystal Player has one very good playback speed troubleshooting feature - it uses large buffer of decoded frames (about 50% of RAM). Is there any player with such features in ubuntu?

More specifically, is it possible to play, e.g., .wmv files with 64-bit Kaffeine (my favorite player) or any other 64-bit video player? If so, then which combination of player and codec should I use?

View 9 Replies View RelatedHow do I set VLC as the default DVD player in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?There seems to be no obvious way to change in which player the DVD's open up in - you can only choose the default media player, but this is not what I want to do.I would like VLC as a default for DVD viewing only - I use Totem for other video files. I used Kaffeine for a while to play DVD's, but found VLC to be superior, especially in DVD menu support.
I know there are threads about how this is done in previous versions (like in 8.04 and so on), but I'm not sure if those still apply for 10.04? Through gconf-editor
