Ubuntu Multimedia :: WinFF Converts But With Huge File Size Output
Jun 1, 2010
I haven't used WinFF before yesterday. Looks simple so I tried to convert an AVI file of 600MB to DV and ended up with an 8GB conversion. For device preset I used Raw DV for Pal Fullscreen as I'm in Australia.Does WinFF always produce such large files?

I am curious if perhaps I am doing something wrong extracting pages from a pdf doc using pdftk and creating a new file. I am only extracting the odd pages from the file and outputting them to a new file that is now only 20 pages instead of the input's 40 pages, yet the new output file is still 1.4Mb in size, the same as the original.
It seems strange to extract only half the pages of a large document and end up with a result that is the same size. how to streamline the resulting pdf's using pdftk?
BTW this is the command I am using, in case perhaps I am missing an option to optimize file size or something:
Code:
pdftk A=ch15.pdf cat A1-40odd output odd.pdf

Using Ubuntu 10.04 and installed latest Banshee via Banshee Team PPA repository. Also installed the streamrecorder plugin and gstreamer-plugins-ugly. When Banshee was at 1.8.0, I could convert streams to MP3. Since it updated to 1.8.1, I can only save the unconverted stream. Tried re-installing the gstreamer plugins but no effect. why I can no longer convert streams to mp3?

When zooming to 100% in listview the font gets huge, but only in the listview panel (see image). Where to reconfigure this to normal behaviour (I'd like the 100% fontsize to be the same as in the treeview in the left panel). I had this behaviour already with the previous relase of Ubuntu, and upgrading to 10.04 did not solve the problem.

The Linux File system uses the file path notation to abstract how data is accessed. Path really must be an environmental variable for the applcication that converts the path name to an inode so what is this application/Daemons name?

I have been asked to investigate some of our servers that run tripwire 2.3.0 on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server release 2.1AS (Pensacola)
We have the reports emailed to us using cron and twprint -m r -r report -t 4, it has been growing steadily and today it was 9mb It seems the database records go back to before 2004 and are being compared against today's files.
I really need to be informed what needs to be done to tripwire to keep it serviced through cron. I have tried to google this but could not find any information that seemed to answer my questions.
Looking at the following guide url step 6 talks about "Updating the Database after an Integrity Check" using
Code:
# tripwire --update --twrfile /var/lib/tripwire/report/<name>.twr Should I be using this command or should I be re-creating the db every month or so and using the #tripwire -init?
Extract from report -

I need to understand how to change the expected to the observed so the db will be up to date.
I would also like some of the rules explained:What does removed and added mean? Is it removed as it has not changed and added if it finds a new one that has?
Code:

I've read so many howto's and threads but never managed to get a decent font size on my tty's. Before grub2 I used to use vga=795 (or something like that), but now that isn't working anymore. I have a 24" Samsung screen and the font size is HUGE. Has anyone with same hardware succeeded in setting a decent resolution? I've played around with gfxpayload and all that stuff. I'm using fglrx driver on an up-to-date system.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and recorded a screencast with gtk-recordMyDesktop. Upon completion of the recording I attempted to convert the OGV file to an AVI, for ease of editing purposes, using WinFF.(And yes, I have installed libavcodec-unstripped-52) The result was an incredibly annoying error message Which stated:
Code:

I am trying to convert movies to mpeg4 or more specifically formatted to play on my blackberry curve. I followed installation guide from this tutorial [URL]. Everything installed and the program works but when I add a file and pick presets and hit convert the terminal pops up and says the following:
[Code].....
So I press Enter and the terminal closes, than... nothing happens just staring at the winff screen.
I really have no idea where to go with this. I found a link from the forums earlier on these common crashes but cant seem to find it again.

I am running 10.10 64-bit and am trying to get an option in WinFF to convert an MPEG file to an iPod compatible video. All of the HOT_TO guides I could find involve installing the FFmpeg libraries, which I have done as well as I could have. The problem is that within WinFF, I don't see anything different in the "Convert To ..." drop-down. The Wiki I am reading tells me to select iPod, but this isn't available. What do I need to do to get this to be selectable?

I want to be able to rip videos off ..... and put them on my ipod. I added installed "Download helper" which enables me to rip the videos off ..... in a flv format. When I try and convert the files to .mp4a (using the WinFF GUI) my terminal pops up and says "unknown encoder 'libx264'"

I have a video - taken on my mobile phone. In totem, I get sound and video: lovely. However, in Openshot I don't get sounds, and in WinFF it tells me "Unsupported codec (id=7372" for the audio stream. Why, when both are using FFMpeg do the installed codecs work differently in different programs?

i am using ubuntu lucid now and using ubuntu for 2years now.except nokia pc-suite i do not miss other s/w for windows.i tried to convert audio and video for using in nokia 5800,but i am not very successful mainly due to my inexperience.i installed winff and ffmpeg and searched a bit in this forum.found a few guides but mostly the converted files shows 'unable to play video or audio' in nokia 5800.
Code:
-r 29.97 -vcodec libxvid -vtag XVID -s 400x240 -aspect 16:9 -maxrate 1200k -b 1200k -qmin 3 -qmax 5 -bufsize 4096 -mbd 2 -bf 2 -flags +4mv -trellis -aic -cmp 2 -subcmp 2 -g 300 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 44100 -ab 160k -ac 2 -async1
this is the example of wiff preset command for nokian810(but not working for me).apparently there is no need for -i or output file(and here i get confused from the command lines posted in the forum.

Is there a program for Ubuntu that converts AVI files to VOB files? This is the only type of file that will burn to a DVD and successfully play on my DVD player. I can use DVD Flick on Windows but I'm sure this can't be the only way. There has to be a way to get VOB files on an Ubuntu operating system.

Just updated WinFF to version 1.3.2-1.1. Since then it won't start up any more due to a floating point exeption. System: OpenSUSE 11.4 (x86) + KDE 4.6.0 Debug info:
WARNING] Out of OEM specific VK codes, changing to unassigned
[WARNING] Out of unassigned VK codes, assigning $FF
ERROR in LCL: TLRSObjectReader.SkipValue unknown valuetype
Creating gdb catchable error:
$080D1568

I had the same error with earlier versions of WinFF in earlier versions of OpenSUSE. Then I could fix it by changing the KDE window styles. The error also occurs with the WinFF qt-version.

Does Recordmydesktop have a file size limit? I'm considering using the Zero compression setting to keep CPU usage down, but I don't want to run up against a 2GB or 4GB file size limit. While I know some filesystems impose this limit, most screen recorders I've used have a 2GB or 4GB limit when recording, regardless of the filesystem. Is this an issue with Recordmydesktop

I have rendered out less than two minutes of High Definition animation to Avi-Jpeg Format in Blender. Now, I have this 2 GB file. Going at this rate, it's going to take a whole DVD set to play a 15 min movie.
Surely, this file doesn't need 2 GB just for 1:45 min/sec, right? Even at high def? How do I reduce this file size down to like a manageable number, say, 20 miB?

I'm using a basic ffmpeg command to convert some avis into mp4 : file01.avi - 544x416, 368MB
Code:
$ ffmpeg -i file01.avi -vb 750k -s 432x336 file01.vb750.432x336.mp4
After conversion :
file01.vb750.432x336.mp4 - 432x336, 302Mb.
If I alter the output file dimensions to 352x272 I then get a file size of 301MB, which is just 1MB less than the file of dimensions 432x336 ? I had expected size to be 30-40MB lower. I do not want to compromise quality by reducing the bitrate to below 750 kb/s so how can I alter the ffmpeg command syntax to get a considerably smaller file size with video dimensions 352x272 ? I would like to use the default codecs and avoid x264 for the mean time.

I changed the case of one letter ('N' to 'n') in a track name using Rhythmbox and the result is a file which is 7727 bytes smaller than the original (I saved a copy of the original file before editing the track name). The file is in ogg/vorbis format (160 Kb/s). I changed the track name back and the file size didn't change. However, the contents of the file are still drastically different (vastly more changed than merely the letter in the track name).I'm worried that Rhythmbox is doing something dreadful like decoding the file, changing the track name, and then completely re-encoding the file from scratch (meaning it runs the decoded audio through the lossy encoder to regenerate the file). Does anyone know whether or not Rhythmbox is doing this when the user edits the meta data (like the track name, artist, etc.)?
