Ubuntu Multimedia :: Why Does Converting A Video Take A Long Time - C
Apr 23, 2011I'm converting a movie that is .mkv to .avi and it's taking a long time. I'm using a command. Could it be that it's a movie and it's a 720p movie?

View 9 RepliesI am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.
I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.
A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.
I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.
Its no secret that flash video performance is sub-par in Ubuntu. I have a Zotac Mag HD ND01 that I have connected to my 40" LCD tv and have a minimal Ubuntu 9.10 installed running openbox and firefox/boxee/xbmc
My primary use for running a web browser is so I could watch live streaming hockey games in HD. However, thanks to Flash's performance (and yes, i've tried the latest versions, even the 091510 version in labs) in full screen mode, watching hockey is not possible because its way too choppy.
Now, on my desktop computer in my office, I can watch the same stream without issue. So, my question is, is there any way to take this live stream (which is using Flowplayer), and re-encode it on-the-fly so I can stream it to my htpc in a format it likes (such as MKV i guess, it can play 720p/1080p mkv files without issue)?
My desktop is a Core i7 920 overclocked to 4.2Ghz with 6GB DDR3 ram, so I would hope its powerful enough for the cause. Also, the desktop is running Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on a dual boot, so a method in either is fine.
The example can be viewed here:http://texasflyfishers.org/reports/i...ic,1461.0.htmlI am using this BBcode:

I have a collection of music videos of various ages, and want to consolidate the codecs into mp4 files with the following criteria:
1) Retain the same directory structure and same name, hopefully with something like "/music/Videos (Encoded)/" and "/music/Videos (Failed Encoding)/" (Note: Using UTF-8 filenames)
2) Prefer to do this all in one batch; terminal commands/ bash script = awesome
3) Keep the highest quality video without having to encode everything the same (some widescreen, some hd, some with super low resolution)
4) Retain the audio stream untouched (plus, some help on what command to do to convert it to a good format) and, hopefully, to encode with settings that allow for universal apple playback (Handbrake as a great preset for this)
I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a rmvb video converter that works with ubuntu. There is a windows rmvb converter, but when I try to use it through wine it either crashes while converting or just doesn't work period.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to encode a video using only one image during a complete audio file, but a can't find the way to do it. What I need to do is to extend the duration of the frame up to the duration of the audio file. How do I do that with mencoder?
View 4 Replies View RelatedCan I ask for some advice in converting a video (from my phone) which is a 3gp file into something more universal. I use audokonverter for audio files and this gives me a menu right-click option to convert a song from (say) wav to mp3. Is there an equivalent for videos? I am using opensuse 11.4 64 bit and have mplayer, xine and vlc installed plus the necessary codecs. Or is it simpler to use ffmpeg in a c/l environment

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I log into an Xfce session, the splash screen indicates the "starting window manager" step with a busy cursor for about 10 seconds or more. Mind you this is a 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo machine.I have tried logging out, mv-ing ~/.config/xfce4 from a tty console, and logging back in, but the problem persists.I am running Xfce 4.6.1.3 from squeeze.
View 14 Replies View RelatedIt takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?
When booting Fedora 11, my system hangs for a very long time on starting udev. Sometimes I get an I/O error. However, my hardware is fine. I do eventually get in to the system.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWith out going into 2 much detail at this point this is my issue.
I have installed unbuntu 11.04. I have 3 screens. 2 are attached to a ATi adapter and 1 screen is a sandy bridge video adapter.
I have already used the forums a lot to reach this point.
When i change my bios to set the primary adapter to sandy bridge, I can only get 1 screen to work.
When I set my bios to point to the Ati adapter as primary, then only the 2 screens connected to that adapter work.
How do I get both video adapters and all 3 screens to work?
I have run out of ideas on what my next step should be.
Ati adapter is a Radeon HD 4800 Series. The Sandy bridge one HD Graphics Family

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm looking at upgrading my motherboard and graphics card. Ideally, I'd like to have 2 monitors running at once (DVI), and an output to an LCD projector (HDMI). If I can't have all 3 working at once, I'd like the 2 monitors on all the time (off the graphics card), and then switch from the monitors to the HDMI output so that only the projector is getting video.
So, If I get a motherboard with onboard HDMI, would it be possible to run the HDMI out at the same time as the graphics card output?
I've been interested in trying to figure out how to do some real-time transcoding to downsize video files on the fly and play them back on my android phone. I read the Mencoder and vlc documentations and am trying to figure out an open source method and i don't mind setting up an apache server and writing some code to get a web interface.
View 1 Replies View Relatedevery time I reboot and play a video file the colours are messed up. I need to manually increase then decrease the hue or saturation to get the picture to normal in smplayer. The colours aren't competely inversed as in the common bug with the totem sliders, they're just far too red and bright.Smplayer is the latest from PPA. I've checked the totem settings and everything is OK. It only takes two key presses to resolve but it's a pain, to be honest, so if anyone knows what causes this and how to fix it permanently I'd be much obliged.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI been struggling with this since Karmic and I know others have as well. This is really the only thing making me keep a Windows install around for my personal stuff.
Problem: Convert .TS files to iPod or really any smaller format keeping A/V sync after edit. I can covert my .TS file perfectly if I do not edit it but I want to just do a simple, quick trim of 2 mins from beginning and end.
HandBrake with convert the file perfectly but cannot trim. Avidemux does a great job on the video but I always have to play with the audio shift to get it in sync. It is usually betwenn -250ms to -1000ms off but I cannot count on it. If I run the video through DGIndex in Wine or view it with Mediainfo both programs detect the an offset problem but they are always wrong by almost 500ms and it is never constant.
Regular video editing I have pretty good luck with my normal DV files and I could even run the .TS files through other programs but it is too time consuming to be useful form this simple task. Anytime I want to take my recorded TV .TS files I cannot edit them quickly without making a full project out of it in Openshot Cinelerra, etc.
Has anyone found a quick, reliable way to do some lite video trimming in Ubuntu and keep A/V sync without having to resort to any Windows programs?
EDIT: Also I really do not want to resort to have to demux separately either. I know I am asking a lot but I got spoiled with a couple of Windows programs that will edit without reencode programs like VideoReDo can do the editing and converting all at once (for $100 !).
Im not receiving any package updates since a month in my update manager. Is it the same for everybody?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 9.04 and I recently "got" a 13.2GB 1080p HD movie. When I try to play it, it's choppy and mosaic like. The audio plays fine, but the video jumps and I can't get a clean picture except for maybe 15% of the time. I have to hold down the spacebar so it plays and pauses very quickly for the video to even proceed. I've updates VLC and Movie Player and I've downloaded many codecs and I can't seem to fix it.EDIT: I can play it in Movie Player without the pixel/mosaic-like effect, but it too is extremely choppy.

I run the Karmic install disk and use the 'try before installing'option. It works well and I am able to 'rescue' anything I want by saving to a USB drive.Problem is that Karmic does take a relatively long time to load on a 'slow' PC.Does anyone have any suggestions on a 'slimmed down' Ubuntu that could be used in the same way which will load up quickly ?In most circumstances all I want to do is mount the C Drive of the stuffed PC and copy files to an external USB drive.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just made a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and after installing all updates, GDM is taking a long time (about one minute) to come up after a clean boot, resulting in a regular console prompt.
If I issue "sudo service gdm start" it does come up promptly.
What can I do? Where can I see startup logs to try and identify any problems?
