Ubuntu Multimedia :: VLC Fails To Play DVD Across Network - NFS

Jan 9, 2010

I have a desktop computer with a DVD drive in it.

I have two laptops, neither of which have a DVD drive, but all of them are on a wireless network at home.

I have the DVD drive shared across the laptops using NFS. (I can post the etc/exports and the fstab files if need be, but I don't think they are the problem).

Two days ago, I put a DVD in the desktop machine, fired up the first laptop (x61s), opened VLC on the laptop and watched the DVD fine across the network. Very good it all was too.

Yesterday, I tried exactly the same, and it failed. The DVD fails to open on VLC. It doesn't buffer, it doesn't show the length of the disk, it just goes back to the 'no media loaded' state.

It's doing the same now. If I run VLC from the command line, it gives the following:

Code:

The same thing happens from the other laptop (X31), and when I do the same I get this set of messages in the terminal:

Code:

This doesn't mean a lot to me, but it looks like there is some problem accessing the disk in the desktop machine. BUT it plays fine if I open VLC on the desktop machine, so it works that far.

The funny thing is that it worked across the network fine on the first laptop (x61s) a couple of days ago, and I don't think I have changed anything on either machine since then. (I suspect it worked fine on the second laptop - X31 - but don't recall trying it.)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mplayer Fails To Play Back Some Mp4 H264 / Fix It?

Mar 13, 2011

I currently have mplayer installed with the binary codecs in place, but it seems that mplayer is quite picky with which files it wants to play.

I have three files that are all mp4 h264 .mkv's. One of them is ~20 minutes long (720p) and mplayer seems to do just fine. Another is around ~90 minutes (1080p) and within seconds the audio gets out of sync. The third file is also around ~90 minutes long (1080p) and refuses to play at all, throwing a mess of:

[h264 @ 0x5fdbac0]AVC: Consumed only 1 bytes instead of 521

Error while decoding frame!

The machine is fairly old (Athlon 64 X2 4200+), but I don't think it's a hardware performance issue. When it was running Windows XP it could handle any HD video I threw at it. Each one of these files plays perfectly on my Windows machine with Media Player Classic Home Cinema + ffmpeg...

Is there something wrong with ffmpeg or is support for h264 just not there yet?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dvd Drive Doesn't Play Store Bought But Does Play My Copies Of Them

Mar 10, 2010

After many days of trying to tweak Ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386. This subject will focus on my dvd drive. ...Here is what I have done, but I'm not sure what I did or still need to do, or to do different. ...

Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.

When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.

I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.

I came across the Medibuntu site: [url]

Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)

Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Play Iplayer Video - Clicking The Play Button Does Nothing

Feb 28, 2010

Anyone else struggling to play iplayer video? I've got the proprietary Flash plugin, which means it's probably not this "SWF Authentication" thing that there's been so much talk about.

I've rebooted, tried all sorts of tinkering, it loads the applet (I can see that Flash is loading OK because other things work, and right clicking on the applet gives the Flash menu)

However, clicking the play button does nothing.

Software :: Mplayer Fails To Play Any Media?

Sep 7, 2010

I am having a constant problem with all media. All songs and video locally will not play smoothly. They are broken usually with no sound. It takes about 10 real time seconds to play one second of a song.Moving on.. using Totem movie player, but I switched to mplayer and am still having the problem. I have looked into the problem and I believe it has to do with the Win32 Codecs plugin. The current plugin running is LibMad0 (whatever you call it)I also have the libmad0-dev pkg installed. This is the default plugin I believe for mplayer, but after extracting the Win32 codec filento /usr/lib/Win32 it did not make a ifference. So question, how can I make it revert to the Win32 codec plugin?Specs:HP Pavilion dv4Notebook PC Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5800 @ 2.00GHz64bit processor.

Fedora Hardware :: Disk Drive Fails To Play DVDs

Feb 2, 2010

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook A3130, and I have semi-recently installed Fedora 11. I am still a fairly new linux user, and would like to continue to use this great open source software, but it seems my DVD drive fails to play DVD's. The specs are here, but unfortunately they don't give much detail as to the model number of the drive in question. I insert the disk, and it pops up with the following dialogue:

You have just inserted a Video DVD. Choose what application to launch. Select how to open "disk name" and weather to perform this action in the future for other media of type "video DVD". It then suggests opening the disk in "Movie Player", and provides a check box for "Always perform this action". I hit OK, and it seems to try to open Movie Player, but then comes up with this error:

An error occurred
Could not read from resource.
Then it provides an "OK" button. When I click the button it goes back to Movie Player, and proceeds to not show any video.

I just tried to open the disk inside of Movie Player, via the "Movie" menu, then clicking "play disk 'disk name'", but once again I get an error:
Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because it does not have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from the disk. Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media.
And again it provides an OK button, which diverts back to the main Movie Player window.

OpenSUSE Network :: Network Connection Fails To Go Past Router

May 16, 2011

So up until I updated from Opensuse 11.3 to 11.4, I hadn't any issues with my network connection. At least none worth mentioning. Once I installed 11.4, I've had weird issues with varying lengths of connection. Sometimes I can't connect anywhere, sometimes I can only get to the router, sometimes I'm 100%. I'd fiddle with YAST until everything worked. I honestly have no clue whether or not anything I did had any effect.

Enough of the iffy history, here's what's happening now. For the past few weeks up until last night, I have been at 100% connectivity. I never turned off my computer until last night (it just shut itself off, like the cord was unplugged. I dunno what happened, maybe it was my foot, maybe the PSU. I think it has happened before.). When I turned it back on, I was only able to connect as far as my router (192.168.1.1, a D-Link Gaming router that has always been very good to me). I could not make it to my modem (192.168.0.1, a Quest DSL modem. Once I can get here, then usually I'm good to go 100%).

I tried again this afternoon, and no change. I then get the crazy idea to unplug the ethernet cable from it's PCI-card home and return it to the onboard port (which I long ago declared defunct). Immediately after plugging it into that port, I ran "ping 192.168.0.1" and I started getting returns. I open up Firefox and try to load an external page, and nothing happens. I go back to the console that I was pinging from, and it had stopped. I start pinging my router, and no luck. What I conclude from my little experiment is that the router is not at fault.

1. It did not change at all between being at 100% and being at 0% after reboot.
2. I was able to get returns from the modem, past the router, for a brief period of time while using the defunct ethernet port.

Since I never had these problems before updating to 11.4, I'm inclined to believe that it was the update that started these problems.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Can't Play DVDs - Multimedia RPMs Are Installed

Aug 9, 2011

Normally I find everything I need either in the documentation or forum, but it's been months, and this time I'm stumped. I'm posting the results of my latest tests, so I'm really sorry about the length of this post.

I can't play DVDs unless they've been burned by myself or a friend. I had no problems until around the beginning of April. I was running 11.2 on both my laptop and desktop. I think an update changed something. This was before 11.2 was officially retired a week or so later. I wanted to upgrade to 11.4 anyway, so I began with my laptop. During installation I wiped everything from my hard disk by creating new partitions and formatting them. After installation I installed the multimedia packages using one-click (opensuse-guide.org, not opensuse-community.org, although I did read what they said). I know one-click is not ideal, but I was curious. The result was that I still couldn't play DVDs.

I did a fresh installation, just to be on the safe side. This time I installed the packages according to Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide by caf4926. But I still couldn't play DVDs, so I went through the thread Check your multimedia problem in ten steps. Then I ran mmcheck (v2.35). I tried a few times, experimented, and in the end did another fresh install.

In the meantime, on my desktop, which still has 11.2 on it, I found the file which had been changed and changed it back, so I could play DVDs on it again. It was in /etc/udev/rules.d/, 70-persistent-cd.rules. This does not appear to be the problem in 11.4 on my laptop.

I have again installed the packages according to the multimedia installation guide, and done the ten-step check and run mmcheck and these are the results as they stand:

I couldn't find a package called mplayerplug-in. I used zypper to look for it.

I tried installing the totem packages in a previous installation, but they didn't make a difference, so I left them out this time.

I deinstalled my jdk, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference, except that I get an error notification everytime I want to use LibreOffice. And I need it, so I'm putting it back soon.

So, these are my packages:

And this is what happens when I try to play a DVD using Kaffeine (since I don't an error message except from Kaffeine, and I've forgotten where my logs are):

And then comes Read error from: Error reading from DVD over the GUI.

And nothing else happens... I get no feedback from smplayer whatsoever. It opens, trys to read the DVD, and sits there. Even on the console.

OpenSUSE Network :: NFS Mount Of XFS Fails On 11.3

Jan 12, 2011

I've just upgraded to 11.3 (64 bit) and the nfs client does not quite work. I have 3 mounts I try to make, and 2 out of 3 work. The third seems to mount, but shows an empty directory. There are no errors in /var/log/messages on the 11.3 client or the server. The only difference between the 3 mounts that I can see is that the failing mount is of an xfs system. The other two happen to be ext3. Is that visible to the nfs client? Or is that a red herring? I can still mount all 3 just fine from my other opensuse 11.2 systems.

For info, the server is running opensuse 10.3...
