Ubuntu Installation :: Mini.iso Network - Auto Configuration Always Fails
Jul 12, 2010
I've got this old IBM thinkpad which has 128mb of ram, and I'm trying to configure a small mini.iso minimized ubuntu distro set up on it. From here: [URL] During the instillation, it requires that I connect to the internet to install and choose packages, the problem is the auto configuration always fails. I plugged in via Ethernet, but I'm still not exactly sure how to get it working.

I'm trying to install Debian-testing to an ASUS 1018P netbook on which I have successfully installed Arch in the past. I'm installing from an external DVD drive and when I get to the point of network configuration it fails. I'm connected via Ethernet via eth0 which is recognized. Here is the last part of the ouput:
kernel: [ 1807.932848] atl1c 0000:01:00.0: irq 29 for MSI/MSI-X
kernel: [ 1807.933453] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval is 8
dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval is 15

I'm in need of a bit of assistance from you Debian users. I have two servers that I thought were identical installations, both running Debian Lenny. Tonight I started the upgrade to Squeeze on both servers and one of them went smooth. The other one started out good but fails on the postconfiguration of openssh-server. I'm getting the following message:
Code:
Setting up openssh-server (1:5.5p1-4) ...
Auto configuration failed
2524:error:0E079065:configuration file routines:DEF_LOAD_BIO:missing equal sign:conf_def.c:366:line 67
invoke-rc.d: initscript ssh, action "restart" failed.
[Code].....
It looks like there's an error in one of the files in openssh-server that prohibits it from installing correctly. However on the other server it all went well.

I was just wondering if there's any point having both auto and allow-hotplug against the same interface in network/interfaces as allow-hotplug seems to bring an interface up at boot on its own.

I'm trying to use network-manager in sid and it's incredibly frustrating because every 2 minutes or so it seems to scan for wireless access points, during which time my SSH connections completely hang and screw up. Pings start dropping packets as well. By doing an "iwlist scan" I can reproduce the behavior. Has anyone else dealt with this? I haven't been using network-manager, but I am currently due to mobility and needed VPN functionality... WICD with no network-manager works better but there's no gui-based VPN support. I've got an Atheros wireless device and I've read that supposedly it should be doing background scanning since kernel 2.6.32, but I haven't seen anything like that, and I'm on 2.6.32-5-amd64 currently, 2.6.32-3-amd64 behaves the same too.

I have a ppp0 entry with post-up options like this
mapping ppp0
map none photon-plus motorola
map timeout: 12
## map init-time: 12 # for slow drivers
[code]...
If I comment those off then no such problem, hence some how ppp0 executed automatically and there is no [auto ppp0] any where. How can I stop this forcefully ?

I have Debian Squeeze AMD64 bit release. It finds my wired ethernet connection and ues itfine, although nothing shows up in the top right corner under the networking icon.
When I plug my mobile phone in (HTC S620) it always uses this as the main internet connection and then even if disconnected wont use my wired connection until I reboot.
Is there a way to stop it doing this or at least have my wired connction as an option so I can just click to reconnect to my ethernet connection?

My debian machine works fine other that it loses network after a few (12 or so) hours. The dhclient manages to renew the DHCP lease the first time, after a few hours, but later when it tries again the modem gives a DHCPNAK. If I understood correctly, this should make the dhclient to fetch a new ip address but it does nothing. I am no expert so I don't know if the cause is the modem box or the debian. There are other (windows) machines connected to the modem box which work fine. The machines are behind NAT.
The debian machine does not currently have a display or a graphics card so it's difficult to start messing with the settings. I've considered having a static ip but I don't understand why the dynamic address doesn't work. What is weird is that it worked fine for several weeks and suddenly started failing. I was running a minecraft server (hehe) with an uptime of several weeks. At first I though it was a hardware issue because I thought the whole computer froze but instead it just drops the connection and I can no longer reach it with SSH or anything. My timezone is UTC+3, /etc/default/rcS has UTC=yes, I believe it is the reason why the lease and the logs differ by three hours. The machine is only running apache2+mysql+php5, GDM is stopped.I'm trying to post as much info I can. Here is the ifconfig output when the connection is working for the wired connection:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:22:2b:28:f6
inet addr:10.0.0.7 Bcast:10.0.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Trying a minimal install with the mini.iso. I don't have a wired internet connection, only wireless from my iPhone which works fine with my full install of Ubuntu. The installer is not able to find my wireless connection stating "No Network Interfaces Detected". I did try to install yesterday in town with a friends wired internet connection and I got the same result. I'm able to get to the command line in the installer but have no idea how to start my wireless connection so the install can continue. I have searched here, and elsewhere on the net to the point of giving up.

I press On-button, Debian boots, logs in and automatically connects to the Wireless network AND! to my local pc via LAN. It runs an ssh server, so I can ssh into debian over internet and communicate with the local pc (send a magic packet). Here are my problems:
1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.
And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?

my wireless home network is not recognized by my network card (RealTek RTL8190 mini PCI). The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. Internet conection works fine with ethernet but ubuntu does not see my wireless network. card (RealTek RTL 8190 ID: 10ec:8190). Have searched this forum but unable to come up with a fix. I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.

I've been installing multiple versions of ubunutu over years and now I better understand why I faced always problems with wifi configuration on these different baselines : Debian root of course.
Now on Debian 7.4 :
The Broadcom BCM4313 driver is not loaded by default (not free product) for my wifi card. This is stated thru the UNCLAIMED declaration
Code: Select all
sudo lshw -c network
*-network UNCLAIMED
description: Network controller
product: BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller
vendor: Broadcom Corporation
physical id: 0
[Code] ...
Unclaimed means : no driver found (no kernel association)
So I installed the driver located in the non-free backports by adding this target into the repository
Code: Select alldeb http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free
and install :
Code: Select allsudo apt-get update && apt-get install firmware-brcm80211
sudo modprobe brcm80211
Check seems OK :
Code: Select allsudo lshw -c network
*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller
vendor: Broadcom Corporation
physical id: 0
[Code] ....
I can't connect with wlan0, it doesn't work. I found information here regarding WPA2/PSK wifi configuration on debian : [URL] ....
so I added this setup to my interfaces file an got :
Code: Select allauto lo
iface lo inet loopback
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid Hznteam-Datacenter
# hexadecimal psk is encoded from a plaintext passphrase
wpa-psk 12345678901234567890123456
It's worth ! no more wifi network are detected and ifconfig gives no ip address allocated :
Code: Select allwlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 78:e4:00:4e:49:a3
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

I followed the nis tutorial listed below to install a nis server and a single nis client for now:
[URL]
Everything went well, except when I was setting up the nis server, the following step failed:
# /usr/lib/yp/ypinit -m
-bash: /usr/lib/yp/ypinit: No such file or directory
Everything else was OK on the nis server side.
And for the client, all the steps were performed, except for:
# service ypbind start
Binding to the NIS domain: [ OK ]
Listening for an NIS domain server.................... [FAILED]
Any NIS guru out there that knows what's going on and how to fix this?

I got assigned to a project, where the installation is done over ansible. As I'm new in linux, python, django, ansible I wanted to try this out on a empty linux debian.
Code: Select alluname -a

When I now run my ansible playbook it tries to install mysql and suddenly I get an error:
Code: Select all:stderr: DEPRECATION: --allow-external has been deprecated and will be removed in the future. Due to changes in the repository protocol, it no longer has any effect.

pip install -vvv -r requirement.txt mysql-connector-python
As version 1.0.12 is an old version, I was searching and tried the following: [URL] ....
But also if I run the installation by direct download I have the same error message:
Code: Select allabc@DebianABC:/home/abc/abcTest$ pip install -r requirements.pip -vvv mysql-connector-python

I was reading about the version requirements from PEP: [URL] .... but as the version looks ok, this should not be the problem.

Im running the latest Debian version, 6.0 on my Dell Mini 9.Webcam and sound work, but microphone is a no-go.In Alsamixer (1.0.23), I have Capture, Digital, and Mic settings all the way up. There are no options for adjusting "Front" mic settings. (May have been for older alsamixer versions?)In Sound Recorder, playback has loud noise/feedback? I'm not sure how to interpret the above, but I am just trying to offer as much relevant background information as I can.I've been scouring forums for the answer, but to no avail. Most questions/answers are from 2008, and couldn't find a solution. I'm not very handy with the Linux machine, but love to learn / am learning.

A friend gave me an HP Mini 110 that I can actually use in some situations. I installed Debian 8 with LXDE. It runs well except for the expected lack of driver for the Broadcom 4312 wireless chip. I installed wl using the method shown at [URL] ....
It works fine except that it takes very long to set up WiFi at boot (1 min 30 sec or more every boot--this is a rather frail Atom processor) and the WiFi reception seems poor (65% from an excellent router at 25 feet).
I'm thinking of getting a Panda 300Mbps Wireless N USB Adapter (reportedly using the Ralink RT5372 chipset) and removing the Broadcom driver. I have 2 questions:
1. Could I expect the Panda not to slow my boot time so much? I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell whether there is stable kernel support of this device, although the manufacturer says repeatedly that it works with most Linux distributions.
2. To remove wl is Code: Select allmodprobe -r wl the correct approach?

I am having a strange issue with my xserver. I do have nvidia graphics. My system is Debian Squeeze with limited packages from Sid to fix issues when needed. Currently I don't think that there are any installed from Sid that have not since been updated through testing. It also contains one package from Lenny that does not exist in Testing for some reason, ogle the dvd player.
After an update the other week my gui failed to come up. That is not that unusual with nvidida. So I reinstalled the driver and all seemed to be fine until the next reboot some days later which failed. I reinstalled the driver again and all seemed fine.
The machine did not come out of hibernate cleanly some days later and upon reboot no gui
I have tried the whole group of driver packages out of sid, testing, stable. All are afflicted with the same problem. When the box drops back to the login if I login and issue from root '/etc/init.d/kdm stop' then '/etc/init.d/kdm start' the gui comes up just fine. It also seams to launch much faster than it has for some time.
A friend has questioned if kdm is starting to early in the launch process. I think he may be on to something. But looking at the files in /etc/rc*.d does not seem to indicate to me that is the case. kdm has the launch number 5.
The machine has been converted to the, what is it, multi-process launch thingy, quite some time ago now, like a year maybe? These are what is in the sequence from kdm on
Code:
The install is amd-64 using the standard debian kernel.

I installed karmic, then damn small linux - the DSL's loader would not recognize my xubntu automatically, so I got GRUB 1.97 on xubuntu and it recognized my DSL and added it to the menu with 3 alternative resolution options.
Now, xubuntu starts fine, but when I start DSL in any of the modes, I get the following output:
1. 'vga=normal is deprecated use gfxpayload=text before linux command' comes up in the same font as GRUB menu is displayed - but only for a split second, I had to video it to read it!
2. Uncompressing linux... ok, booting the kernel - similarly, disappears before you can read it, and the computer reboots.
Below are my /etc/default/grub and /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
Does all that mean I want to edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg even though I apparently must not?
NB I have some problems with my hard drive, I have to fdisk it a lot but that's probably because my laptop has a dead BIOS battery - I'm having to fdisk it every time I boot up etc. I'm a bit lost with this to be honest! Anyway, please forget the hard drive note unless you seriously suspect it's at fault for GRUB problems.

I recently fixed an annoying problem and I thought it would be nice to share my solution here. The problem was that after a cycle of suspend/resume, Network Manager would only auto-connect to the same network as it was previously connected to. So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. It would not connect to the school network unless I explicitly told it to.irst, I'll describe the fix. If you're having this problem, you can this. Copy the following:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
case "$1" in

I can't get WLAN up on my Dell Mini 10v (BCM 4312)/openSUSE 11.3/LXDE. And yes, I have thoroughly read iwfingers's 'Getting your Wireless to Work'. After installing openSUSE 11.3 ifconfig can see eth0, l0 and wlan0. No WLAN running. dsmesq|grep firmware prompts me to '/usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware"
After having done that and reboot ifconfig can only see eth0 and l0. Installing broadcom-wl-5.60.48.36-7.pm.16.4.i586.rpm broadcom-wl-kmp-default-5.60.48.36_k2.6.34.0_12-7.pm.16.4.i586.rpm (current ones from Packman) does, Shall I try to install the drivers without installing the firmware first?
Why does broadcom-wl-kmp-default-5.60.48.36_k2.6.34.0_12-7.pm.16.4.i586.rpm install a new default kernel? Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 had no problems with WLAN.
