Ubuntu Multimedia :: Two Monitors With Different Resolutions?
Apr 12, 2010
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP laptop with an Intel 82852/82855 GM/GMC Graphics controller. I have a 2nd monitor attached to the VGA port (HP f1703). The problem is that the two screens have different resolutions. the laptop is 1280 x 768 and the other monitor is 1280 x 1024. The xorg.conf file that was created with Xorg -config set both monitors up with 1280 x 1024 resolution so my screen on the laptop looks all "squashed". I have tried to reconfigure it using the Display Preferences dialog but after i re-boot, both screens are unviewable and I have to restore my previous xorg.conf file. I went through the HOWTO: Jaunty Intel Graphics Performance Guide procedure to setup a "safe" configuration but didn't work and I had to restore my "good' xorg.conf file. What do I need to do to setup my two screens with the correct resolutions: 1280 x 768 and 1280 x 1024?
Here is the video portion from my "good" xorg.conf file
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "Monitor Model"

My notebook's LCD runs at 1920x1080 while my external LCD runs at 1920x1200. For the most part I use the external LCD, but there are times when I need to disconnect and use just the notebook's LCD. Because of the different resolutions I need to exit my X session and go back in otherwise the higher resolution of the external LCD gets cut off when I switch to the notebook's LCD. Other than forcing a non-native 1920x1080 on the external LCD, is there any other way to get both screens to show the full desktop without having to restart X? The GPU I have is an nVidia with the nVidia drivers.

I have been trying to configure dual monitors of different resolutions on 11.4 the Nvidia configuration utility does not know where or what to save anything anymore and goes wonky. Trying to use it is a dead end for me. X11 is a mess. What happened to SAX and things like this that were part of openSUSE and just worked? Supposedly we X11 got better. I think it's got over complicated and much worse. This stuff just worked in 11.1 and KDE 3.

I'm trying to add a higher resolution to my system. I've tried to edit xorg.conf but I think I'm wrong. Everytime I edit and reboot, it tells me I need to run in low graphics mode for now. Now I'm trying 'xrandr.' I was able to create a new mode just fine, but when I try to add it to the appropriate output, I get this:
Code:
prog@ubuntu:~$ xrandr --addmode LVDS1 1280x1024_50.00

Major opcode of failed request: 149 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode)

Here's what xrandr returns:
Code:
prog@ubuntu:~$ xrandr

I don't know why it puts it in TV1. There's two of them because I tried two different refresh rates.

Linux Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic), Nvidia g-force 5200, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz(old PC but i need learn Linux inside out b4 I go 100% Linux)But I have taken the time to the learn the basic cmds like man mv cp apt-get install etc. I cisco engineer but I want to get good with Linux distro's.I have a NVIDIA G-FORCE 5200 which according to NVIDIA'S website the 173.14.x.x driver is the correct one.I have tried diver 173.14xx. I installed it manually and restarted x server.
I have read the installation guides on this forum but to no avail. When I reboot Compiz cube features are working BUT my screen goes 640x350.I tried to edit the /etc/X11/ xorg. conf file but I cant see any screen resolutions lines. I tried changing NV to nvidia and visa versa. Still the screen is buggered.I installed compiz checker and ran it it said all ok. My text goes large the colours are jittery ? When I go to NVIDIA XSERVER SETTINGS i can not change the screen res ? It just stops from selecting the options? I also tried driver 185.18xx and the same results.I also tried installing the drivers with Envy NG and still no better.I now have installed 96.43.13 NVIDIA driver and my screen has went back to normal but I can not enable the cube effects. I take this means it has reverted back to the graphics card on the motherboard? I have also looked at xrandr -s <1014x768> cmd to manually change it and again no avail.

I have a collection of *.mkv files which are 720 HD resolution (1920x720). I'd like to watch them on my netbook, but it can't handle HD content. The videos play fine on any decently-powerful desktop, under either Windows XP/7 or Ubuntu, but they are simply too much for the Atom CPU of the netbook. Is there a way to downconvert the .mkv files to something the netbook can handle? It doesn't have any problem with standard DVD content, which is of course lower resolution. Cutting HD content down to the netbook's native resolution(1024x600) would probably be sufficient.
A free software package available in the repositories would be great, but I have no problem manually installing something if necessary. I have not done any work with converting videos to different formats, so I don't know what's out there for Ubuntu.

I just upgraded to an ASUS MS227 on a Ubuntu 9.10 box with a "NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)" video card. Here's the problem, the only two resolutions it will work in is either 1900x1200 OR 1440x900. Anything in between shoves the display about 5 inches to the left, so far over that it's not correctable by the monitors own horizontal control.
This is my xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Configured Video Device"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
SubSection "Display"

This is 10.04 LTS 64-bit. I took all the modern stuff out of the computer, so I should be cool to make the system displays work right with just a single nv 9800gt adapter and just two displays a Viewsonic 1920x1080 and a samsung 2048x1152.
When I first installed, both monitors had the right resolution but the wrong monitor was primary. That appears to be extremely difficult to solve, with none of the options I found working for me, so I just swapped the cables.
After that change, the proper monitor is primary, but the other monitor is now stuck at 640x480. I googled and binged and slapped and blew and sucked and none of the magic lines to put into my xorg.conf have worked - in fact, I'm finding the best solution might be to put together some command lines with xrandr (which only sees one display FWIW) that do what I want, and then run those each time I start up the OS. I'm willing. I can type fast and I have a good memory.
I THINK I'm looking for the magic line I put into my /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get that display rotated 90 degrees. If CW is harder than CCW, I'll re-mount the display if needed. I can be flexible. A higher resolution would be GREAT as well, but I came into the world at 80x24, I can leave it the same way - thing is, seems like soemtimes, if the moons are aligned, I don't need it at all?
If the real solution is to re-install, that's fine, but I'm going to be back here again, with much more cynicism when I buy a new monitor.
Here is my xrandr output:
Code:
:~$ xrandr --prop
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 2688 x 1152, maximum 2688 x 1152
default connected 2688x1152+0+0 0mm x 0mm
2048x1152 50.0 156.0
1920x1080 51.0 52.0 53.0

I have 2 screens connected by vga/dvi and need to use different resolutions...at the minute ubuntu is forcing the same for both. Where should I start looking. I have two video files recorded simultaneously. I want to edit them into one video file with non-standard resolution and a split screen view which, two videos can be seen together. I tried kdenlive but I was unable to change the output resolution.

I installed Natty on a 5-year-old Compaq with an integrated Intel 8xx chipset, using a Polaroid TLA-01511C monitor, and the list of available resolutions varies quite a bit each time I boot. Sometimes it will only give me 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480; sometimes it gives me a dozen resolutions ranging up to 1600x1200. Only once has it ever offered me the monitor's native resolution, 1280x800.
I'm guessing the EDID is being missent or misread each time. How can I set it to (ignore the EDID and) allow me to select 1280x800 each time? I did notice that when it was a Windows machine, it would give me the short list of resolutions when booted with the monitor off, but gave more options when booted with the monitor on. Here though, it seems to give the long list when booted with monitor off.
Here's my most current /var/log/Xorg.0.log; this time it booted with about a dozen modes available, but not 1280x800.
Code:

I recently got a new external monitor for my laptop, and connected them by VGA. This is what 'xrandr' tells me:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 4096 x 4096
LVDS1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
1280x800 60.0 +
1024x768 60.0
800x600 60.3 56.2
640x480 59.9
VGA1 connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 510mm x 290mm
1920x1080 60.0 +
1600x1200 60.0
1680x1050 60.0
1280x1024 75.0 60.0
1440x900 75.0 59.9*
1280x960 60.0
1280x800 59.8
1152x864 75.0
1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0
720x400 70.1
However when I try to change to some of the higher resolutions, such as 1920x1080, all I get is a corrupted and flickering image. As indicated above, I am currently on 1440x900@59.9h,z but for some reason 1440x900@75hz doesn't work. The same seems to be true for 1280x1024. The three resolutions above that all cannot be selected properly. I tried setting the resolution to maximum in Windows XP and it worked, and my video games console can set it to 1080p, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the monitor. Is there anything I can do or is this some kind of bug or limitation of the graphics driver or something? The graphics chipset of the laptop is an Intel 945GM, which I believe should be capable of displaying 1920x1080. I am running debian unstable with what seems to be the most up to date version of xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Is it possible to run ubuntu with 3 monitors on 2x8400gs? What I have tried: Installed 10.04, enabled latest nvidia drivers. Enabled and arranged each monitor as a separate x window. However, when I did this configuration I couldn't move the programs from the (primary monitor) to the ones plugged to the other 8400gs. What I plan to use ubuntu for:
Mainly work in eclipse, firefox, and evolution. I have no interest in games since this machine is my workstation.

I'm not new to this distro or the forum I only decided to register today seeing as I actually do have a problem and need help because I can't work it out myself. I'm currently trying to get my 3-monitor set-up to work with Natty but I just can't get it to work. I can get 2 of my monitors to work fine in twin-view, and I can move windows between them, but I want to be able to move windows between all three of them. Now, I've tried many different configurations, I've tried making them all Seperate X's, but that didn't work as only two of them turned on and it was like Xorg crashed because Ubuntu would login, but nothing would come up after that it was just like the default Ubuntu wallpaper with no launcher, or desktop or even management. I tried ctrl+alt+f2 to try bring up terminal but that never worked either. i then tried using 2 monitors in twin-view and 1 as a seperate X, but that didn't work either as the same problem happened when I made them seperate X's.

I know it can be done, I just need to know what the hardware is called. There is a community center in the area and I might have a chance to help out. Due to not enough funding the center was only able to get One PC and five monitors. What I hope to be able to do ( and know its possible ) is get the hardware to make each monitor is own terminal with keyboard and mouse.

I want my video card to stop processing an image to my integrated monitor and only process images to my external monitor.
My problem is that I use my Toshiba Satellite M65 (which is a laptop) as a desktop: I use an external monitor, external keyboard, and of course an external mouse. I only recently started using Ubuntu after many years of Windows XP and I just realized that both my laptop's integrated monitor and my external monitor are 'on', displaying the same image. I want my video card to stop processing an image to my integrated monitor.

I've got the latest drivers set up from the x-sane PPA so I'm not sure what more I can do. My driver version is 270.29.

when I click ok the screens freeze. everything else works; I can move the mouse around and if I am playing music it still plays but if I click on any button nothing happens and nothing happens when I use the keyboard either. I would really like to be able to use both my monitors

I'm stuck with making the TV my main monitor, which is a pain. Why is the laptop going white after merging screens? Does anybody have any ideas?

I have two 1680x1050 monitors running from the same graphics card, using xinerama. The left hand one is rotated portrait, while the right hand one remains landscape.
Some flash videos will full screen fine (4od,iplayer,.....) but some will not; in the attached screenshot you can see that there is a small section of the screen displaying the video while the video controls are correctly at the bottom of the screen. The grey block on the right flashes rapidly light and dark.
Another issue I have is that flash will not stay full screen if I move focus to something on the other screen, is there a workaround for this?

My Kubuntu desktop uses 3x24" monitors running on two NVidia cards. I'm using Xinerama to make use of all 3 monitors in one giant desktop. Trouble is I really miss hardware acceleration which I had before with TwinView.
Is there *any* way to make Xinerama use the hardware like it's supposed to? The way it is, it makes the computer struggle; the i7 with 12 GBs of RAM runs like that 200Mhz MMX IBM Aptiva I had in 1995.

In 11.04 there seems to be several posts regarding dual monitors. When I tested 11.04 prior to making it my os Monitor Preferences detected both of my monitors, as did Nvidia Xserver.
So installed 11.04: After enabling my 2nd monitor using Twinview when I reloaded I get the following in the top right hand corner. (This ss was taken during some testing when I removed my 2nd monitor it shows 3600x1080 when both are plugged in) The Unity desktop or Classic will both load up and I can use the screens just fine. The problem is whenever I put games, or even a ..... video in full screen it breaks is the only way I can put it. I open up Monitor Preferences and it show Uknown Monitor with a resolution of 3600x1080. I can only assume that its trying to make the games etc use that resolution. Tested wow in wine and it shows that res even after I forced it to use my primary at 1920x1080.
I am new to Ubuntu so not sure if Twinview is working as intended but I am guessing not. As I have seen many other with Dual Monitor issues and not sure if this is the same thing. I have no problem using max for windows but anything Full Screen is where the issue is. I have tried setting the positions to "Left of" instead of absolute for the 2nd monitor but it changes back each reboot.

I've just upgraded to 10.04 and even if I am able to use my two displays with my Nvidia GPU, it bugs me that I can't use basic transparency controls on my desktop (compositing in Xfce). I've searched all over google and most links say it's impossible to mix Xinerama with Compositing, while others suggest using the old Xgl implementation will do the trick. I've also read things about Xrandr and that it might be a substitute for Xinerama, but it seems Nvidia drivers doesn't support it.
So, basically, I am at the end of my wits and I wanted to ask (shout?) if anyone managed to: 1. use two displays as part of the same desktop AND use compositing (window transparency) 2. or hack the compositing feature to work with some sort of software acceleration instead of hardware acceleration
Google lists all sorts of solutions, but none conclusive. So, is there a way out of this problem, maybe by using nouveau, or Xrandr, or something else entirely?
