Oct 16, 2010I'd like to edit a few frames from some videos, and then return them to the video stream for playback. What are the best tools to do this with?
I tried exporting a frame with Kino, editing with GIMP, and then re-inserting it into Kino, but Kino rejected the attempt.
Will Kino do this, or do I need to be using something else?

Oct 11, 2010i want to connect two videos into one. let's take two videos from videos as an example. i want my final video to have the height = height of first video + height of second video and width = max(width of first video, width of second video). in the upper part the first video is played whereas in the lower part the second video is played.
do you know how to do it under linux, the best possibility while using mencoder, ffmpeg or any other command line command?

May 3, 2011I have Ubuntu 11.04 on a Dell Studio XPS 1640 with ATI graphics and the fglrx driver. It's a powerful machine and I've had no problem what so ever to watch full hd videos on windows 7 but all videos, no matter the resolution, has a very small stutter which is annoying but not making the videos unviewable. But I'd prefer not having it at all. I have tried setting the VLC video output to x11 but there is no difference. It's a screen tearing problem, that was fixed by setting the option "Tear Free" on in ATI Catalyst Control Center.

Aug 9, 2010I'm getting dropped frames from both Digital8 & MiniDV camcorders using Kino. MyCPU doesn't seem to be spiking. I've made sure compiz is disabled and no memory/cpu hungry apps are running. I'm using SATA drives so DMA shouldn't be the issue.
The video and audio that is captured seems to be fine.

I have tried Cinelerra but I cannot find a means of deleting selected frames, I also looked at trying to use Kdenlive but cannot find a way of loading the complete film to work on so unable to tell whether it might be useful.

Sep 1, 2011I'm trying to get my Dual Monitor setup working. I have a 1900x1080 LCD and a 1280x1020 LCD. Cards are dual nvidia 7600GT.
I had the system set up using TwinView for a while but I opted to switch over to "Separate X Screen" so that the two displays could serve as separate desktops with different functions. Initially they were both running off of GPU0 and everything was fine. I then decided to swap the smaller monitor over to GPU1 to make better use of my available resources. I have no issue using the nVidia configuration utility and all appears well but when I respart X it comes up with a black screen and a white mouse cursor and then just lags. The mouse moves initially but after a few minutes it freezes and the whole system locks. I have to hard reboot and then it comes up with only one monitor. Inspection of the xorg.conf file shows that it has disabled the second monitor in order to start X.
Can someone look at my xorg.conf and see if there's anything obvious that would cause it to break? Is there some issue with separate cards that is fundamentally different from a dual-head card?

Jun 10, 2010I'm looking for a program that will allow me to remove the vocal from an audio file, and also provide the ability to remove background noise (as much as possible). I have an audio recording for a presentation we did at work recently, but the quality of the recording is not the best and there is quite a bit of background noise. I would like a way to clean up the file and amplify the vocals. I tried to use Audacity for this, but couldn't get it to work. Has anyone used a software program that provides this ability?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dual Monitor Setup - Separate X Screen Option
Feb 18, 2010I've played around with a second monitor, but so far I haven't found a satisfying solution. I am using a laptop with a GeForce 9600M GS graphics card. I have managed to set up twinview, but my monitors don't have the same height so I'd rather have something like the "seperate x screen" option. Or how I imagine that option would be like. After some problems with the nvidia configuration tool (I couldn't change the xorg.conf, until I read this: [URL] I now have two separate screens, but the second one is all empty, with black background and X-shaped mouse cursor.
There seems to be no window manager running, I can start programs there with -display :0.1 , but they don't get any frame decoration and, which is worse, no keyboard focus. I'd be fine with a fullscreen konsole there, so I don't really need a window manager, but I do need access from the keyboard. I'd prefer a setup that would allow me to easily (without editing xorg.conf) switch between using both monitors and using only one, because I don't always use the laptop at home.

Oct 17, 2010When I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?

May 30, 2011this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.

Apr 11, 2011I am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:
- No audio via HDMI see [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S [URL]
As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".
How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Scroll Through Hundreds Of Photos & Move Good Ones To A Separate Folder?
Nov 19, 2010I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and am just trying to get basic functionality without having to punt back to Windows applications on Wine (such as Irfanview).All I want to do is step through photos (by pressing a key, such as the space bar) to view & then press a keyclick to move the good ones to a separate folder.
This is so fundamental that I must assume there must be software in Ubuntu which can accomplish those two simple tasks (step through a folder and move a file to another folder). Yet, I have The Gimp, GNU Paint, Krita, KSnapshot, XFig, XPaint, etc., and none of them appear to have this basic functionality (which Irfanview has, but on Windows).
What program can view and easily MOVE the photo to a stated directory in a single keystroke? Note: All the programs can "open a file" and "save as" but this is NOT the desired fundamental operation. The fundamental operation is:
- Press a key (spacebar would be nice) to scroll to the next photo in a folder.
- Press another key combination ("control + m" would be nice) to move the photo to a stated folder
- The "index" should NOT be reset (that is, the next spacebar should show the next photograph in the folder, not jump back, perhaps hundreds of photos, to the first photo as The Gimp does, for example, after a save).
- It's ok to set the move-to folder the first time, but it should not ask each and every time which folder as it should be the default for the move command after the first move.
Note: I also tried making the icons in the Nautilus browser huge and then control-click selecting the good ones, but that makes ALL icons at all times huge, and the scroll in Nautilus is atrocious, so, in effect, that was a failure. I need a graphic program that performs this simple task. This is so fundamental of a need (to scroll through and move just the good photos to a stated folder) that I find it hard to believe I can't (yet) find a graphics display program capable of scrolling and moving photos.

I followed the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto but still have the same issue. I have also read many posts but I have trouble understanding some of the responses. Could it be the low amount of RAM?

Sep 1, 2011I am experiencing a problem with viewing 1080p movies. The frames get stuck and don't refresh, so I am left with a single image while the sound plays on fine. I find that this only occurs with high resolution movies, but I am curious as to where the problem lies and if I can fix this at all. Here are my computer's specs and configurations:
I am using Ubuntu 10.10 (didn't want to get 11.04) with 2GB or ram and 972.6MB of swap (I need to increase that to 4GB, I think? Correct me if I am wrong). I am using a Toshiba u400 Satellite which comes with a Intel X3100 Integrated Graphics chipset (don't really know the strength of this set up) and has two 1.73 GHz processors. The only thing that is within my power to change is the swap allocation. When I start the movie and bring up the System Monitor, VLC takes up almost the entire CPU usage.

May 1, 2011I did a clean install of 11.04 and I have experienced that my separate X-screen does not have the program-name bar with the minimize, close-buttons etc. It's my third monitor is a separate X and it does not really work since I cant close programs, maximize windows or move them around. I cant even write anything on it. The first two monitors work great as one X-screen, just as they did in 10.10. Ubuntu Classic, no Unity. Two monitors (one X) on a ATI HD6970 One monitor (the X-screen that doesn't work properly) on a ATI HD4870

Jul 6, 2011I have an integrated intel video and latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver(using only stable repo). Now I wanna watch high-res video. From the bits of info collected from all over internet I understood that I need to:
1.aptitude install libdrm libva.
2.compile or find the .deb mplayer-vaapi and install it.
3.add -vo vaapi -va vaapi to the mplayer command line in gnome-mplayer.
My question : is that correct or did I miss something? Do I have to compile latest libdrm and libva or the ones from the squeeze repo will be good? Do I need kms enabled, i.e. install firmware-linux-nonfree?
