Debian Programming :: Organize A Dictionary Text File?
Nov 9, 2013
I have bought a pdf dictionary, but I would like to convert it to stardict for my ereader.
I have converted the pdf into txt but is quite a bad result. So I need to reorganize a bit the txt.
I'm not a programmer, so I should need you write me a small script (python, sed, bash...) that if at the end of the line there is not a point then the line have to be joined with the following line. Sometimes happens that there is a point even in the middle of the line: in this case the line have to be splitted.
Once last thing: after the first word it's needed a TAB. I have appended a preview of the txt file.

I have this dictionary file that has this format:
SUBSTITUTE_VALUE, Real Value
SUBSTITUTE_VALUE_2, Real Big Value
SUBSTITUTE_VALUE_HECL, Hardware Abstract
SUBSTITUTE_V, Valley Mem
I want to sort this file so the LONGEST Substitute Values are listed at the top ( so SUBSTITUTE_VALUE_HECL would be first in the list). Obviously I want to keep the related values tagging along with them, so the whole first line would be
SUBSTITUTE_VALUE_HECL, Hardware Abstract
Playing with sort This has me pretty close: sort dict.file -k1.1n,1

I am having trouble writing a script that monitors a text file. When the file contains number 1 (or any other string that is not a command) it does nothing, but when it is something different from 1, it executes that command.
So, there are 2 files: monitor.mon - this is the file that will be checked constanlty; and test.sh - the script that does the job. The monitor.mon file will have its content modified by php. This means a web page will have a form where I input commands and writes does commands in the file. Test.sh will watch when the file's content changes from character 1 to a command, execute that command and write back a 1 so it will not execute it more times.
I tried combining while and if but with no success. Tried reading the file with cat and grep -e but it doesn't seem to recognize when content changes.

Is there any way to use sed to replace certain text in a file with the persons username automatically? Right now i'm using
Code: Select allsed -i.bak s/STRING_TO_REPLACE/STRING_TO_REPLACE_IT/g file.foo
I would like it to automatically inject the persons usrname in the replacement string. Is this possible? I've been looking on line at various sed tutorials and I cant quite find what i'm looking for. I also didn't really see anything in the forums search function.Essentially i'm trying to take this file URL...Android.rules and replace all instances of username with the persons actual username automatically.
Code: Select allsed -i.bak s/username/$USER/g 51_Android.rules

I have to delete a certain line of text from the a textfile via ubuntu's shell scripting.I have done research, and it seems that most people advocate the usage of sed /d option. sed makes does not edit the text file. Hence, most options I discovered involved the use of a temporary variable/textfile and then overwriting the old file with the temporary new file. Is there anyway whereby I can bypass the use of temporary storage containers? I hope there is any magical combination of commands to edit the file directly.

I want to display the contents of a particular log file (simple text file, I mean in Linux). But there is a problem: The contents need to be organized in a fixed format. Have a look at this log file:
sampleLog.txt
Code:
User Name: XYZ
Reported Problems Description: Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah!
[code]....
So, while displaying the contents of above file on a web page, I want to format the field names found in the log file: User Name:, Reported Problems Description:, and Remarks:. These fields may contain a variable length of text and no specific line number is assumed for them to appear on.
The desired output should look like this:
User Name: XYZ
Reported Problems Description: Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah! Blah!Blah!
[code]....
Well, what I am trying to do may sound wierd to some of you. The filed "Reported Problems Description:" can possible contain text which embeds colon (.

I am setting up a file server using Ubuntu and want to make sure I set up a folder structure that will last. Where should I be placing everything that I am sharing (Music, Pictures, Videos, etc)? In theory, if I was setting this up on Windows, I would create a folder directly under C: and set up the different areas of sharing under that (not that that approach would be best either).
Based on constructive criticism, the question is rather ambiguous. My question could be restated to ask "Where shouldn't I set this up? Would /usr be an appropriate place to start? Or would /opt be better?

I have a .txt-file with ~50.000 lines of numbers, generated by a mathematics program. From this file, I need line ~ 1.100 to line ~16.000 (these lines are always the same btw, this may make the solution easier, dunno) to be copy/pasted to another file, where the lines ~500 to ~15.000 (also, every time the same) should be overwritten by the aforementioned lines...I haven't found or come up with anything that works yet, mostly I find solutions to copy everything from one file to another but I can't find something to specifically overwrite a part of a file with part of another.

Over the years of working with both images (many) and other files (many more) it seems that it is easier to organize images. There are a variety of image software (digikam, gthumb, the new "shotwell") etc. Its easy to organize them with multiple references - date, multiple categories etc. This in fact makes it easy & efficient in our multi disciplinary world to access the same image for multiple needs.
However the same is not true for other files (od formats, pdfs etc etc) the only way we seem to be able to sort them is by what folders we make. Of course we can use meta search engines to find it by other keyword / dates etc. But it is not the same as being able to give multiple tags to a file and later being able to retrieve by that particular tag.So am wondering if such a file tagging / sorting and accessing "thingy" already exists and if so what is it. Or it is available and i don't know where to look.

I have written a code on Linux that searches a long dictionary. I have used hsearch() function but the problem is it does not work. This is my code://Search the count values from the dictionary.
Code:
#define _GNU_SOURCE
#include<stdio.h>
#include<stdlib.h>
#include<string.h>
#include<search.h>
#include<inttypes.h>
#include<math.h>
[Code]...
I open each DIC file, get the word from it and search the hash table and extract the key from it. The problem with the above code is that it is able to make the hash table but it returns NULL when searching. It should not return NULL in any case because all words from DIC files are there in the dictionary. I am not able to figure out why?

I need to extract som text from a text file. The text is a test log with system info at the top and results further down. What I need is to add different tags with formatting before and after each line. I have prepared a template with html formatting, but the number of lines in the test log may be different from case to case, so I need to be able to add formatting tags by need. Can this be done using bash script, sed, awk, head, tail... ?

I have a file with 5000 lines. it is a list of books authors, series and titles. all lines start with the author names, than there is a dash (-) than the series name, a dash again and the title of the book.
The problem I encounter is that sometime there is a series, sometime not, and as I try to enter this list in a database, I wanted to create a cvs file to import into mysql.
ex:
The best would be to be able to add in the second line, a "space dash space" just after the author name, but how to make sure it does not do it to the first line as well.
If I could separate all line with 2 dash, (grep ?) then I would be able to do a simple replace, and change the single dash into two.

Im trying to read a file in c++ and search for particular character for example if this is a list that I have:
Alice
Bob
David
[code]....
if the input is D, it should give David, if its B, gives bob. so in this case, meaning it reads the first character of every line. but if possible I want to make this dynamic so the user can specify which character position he is looking for, so in case he is looking for R as character index 3 in all lines, it should give Charlie. but the problem is, it does now recognize , besides, I do not know how to specify the character position in each line.
here is my code
Code:
#include <iostream>
#include <fstream>
#include <cstring>
[code]....
