I installed 10.04 on my former windows box last night, and I seem to be stuck at a screen resolution of 1024x768. I have a Geforce 7600 GT graphics card, and I installed current drivers via the hardware drivers option. I can't go above this resolution in the nvidia x-server settings, and even xrandr says the highest resolution I can use is 1024x768. What is up with that, and how can I change it?
View 1 RepliesI am stuck at 1024x768 in Ubuntu 10.04 with the nVidia GeForce 7100. I installed the drivers suggested by nVidia on their website, but it doesn't seem to heighten my resolution any. 1024x768 is the highest which appears in nVidia X Server Settings.

Is there a way to fix this without having to buy a new card? I've read that the GeForce 7100 is pretty crappy, but I've got no money to space at the moment.
I've googled the issue and had a little luck, though I can't seem to change my xorg.conf file because permissions are defailed. This is the example xorg.conf file I wrote based upon my original and the modifications:

I am using Mercury p4VM800 mother Board and Intel PIV 2 GHz Processor. I have installed the fedora 10 Today. My screen resolution was automatically set to 650x480 and this is the only option available in graphical mode. I am not able to increase the resolution to 1024x768. I once again reinstalled the F10. during the installation, in the boot: option I have entered 'linux resolution=1024x768', but it won't work.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Debian 5.0 (Lenny) on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. I have been banging my head trying to figure out why my laptop display (15.6" optimum resolution 1366x768) is only running at 1024x768. This was not a problem in Ubuntu even as far back as 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) which came pre-installed.
I am running kernel 2.6.32 (from Backports) to get WiFi to work and it still hasn't remedied the video oddities.
How do I either:
1) Letterbox the 1024x768 so that it isn't distorted?
or, more preferably,
2) Display in the full 1366x768?
My video card is:

I'm now working to install Debian 8 on another computer since yesterday. Another Linux, and as always, endless list of problems.
- A computer that was freezing at every installation attempt (but never at the same moment) during installation when the Broacom cardbus adapter was connected (it's a chance that it is easy to remove and I found it quickly... and it is working once installation is finished)
- Turning to sleep mode after 15 seconds if I don't quickly try to login
- BOINC receive no work
- Tray icons are here but invisible - no icons, just gray space
- xserver-xorg-video-savage is installed, but I have resolution problems, and weird glittering horizontal lines when the computer is working (as on my other PC with the SiS video card).
On Debian 7.8, it was working fine for having the 1024x768 native resolution of this laptop screen.
But, with debian 8, the max resolution is now "800x600" and with this screen, there is no smooth effect : the image is a disaster.

How to confirm that my Video card is included into xserver-xorg-video-savage package ? How do I know if the driver is loaded ? How to modify xorg confifugration files in this modern flavour of Linux in order to force adding the 1024x768 resolution ? I already succeed into /etc/default/grub and "update-grub" for the bootloader screen but I want it too in the desktop environment.
Barebones installation. Manually start x with 'startx'. For some weird reason, the resolution randomly sets to either 1024x768 or 800x600. How do I permanently set a resolution?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI made a total reinstall of Slack 13.1 the other day and all went seemingly well. After a lot of experimenting and deciding I wanted the disk partitioned differently, a reinstall felt about right. But when I started X the resolution was all too low. xorg.conf was adjusted with the properties of my screen (GDM 4011P). Once upon a time, the Xorg config-tool would ask me my opinion, but now it flashes by and I have to live with what it comes up with.
The nVidia driver was installed (legacy for GeForce 3). I know the config is read, because it fails parsing if I have kHz with the sync-figures. But it otherwise disregard my wish to run at 1280x1024. In XFCE I can run the nVidia configuration tool, but it offers only auto, 320x240 or 640x480. The screen is too small for me to click "ok" on several occasions. The machine is capable of 64bit, 2GHz. But I installed the 32bit version of 13.1, it has 1,5GB RAM.
So yesterday, I my power went out on my desktop and when I rebooted, the screen resolution was stuck at 640x480. When I go to the display settings, no other higher options are available. Any suggestions?

I've installed CentOS 5.5 on my Acer Aspire One D150. It uses the Intel integrated graphics chip GM945 which isn't supported "out of the box" by CentOS. My screen resolution has defaulted to 800x600, but it should be 1024x600. tried xrandr, and editing the xorg.conf file, and now have gone down the rabbit hole of trying to install xf86-video-intel and its associated dependencies (nested like Russian matryoshka dolls). I'm at the point of trying to install xorg-server, but am getting hung up by its dependencies on xproto and fontsproto, despite having installed them.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit with a GTS 250. After installing the restricted driver from NVIDIA's website I get stuck at a 640x320 resolution. The only other option I get is 320x240. The resolution I need is 1680x1050.
I've also encountered this problem with a 9600GT.
I am a first time user and recently installed 9.10 from a LiveCd then immediately upgraded to 10.04 LTS. I had no black screen problem, but my resolution is stuck at 640x480 with no other options. I upgraded my driver to NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.31 and the resolution remains the same. I have a Geforce GTS 250 and an Acer H233H capable of 1920x1080_75.

I have tried entering a CVT generated modeline to the xorg file but it did nothing.
I have 11.2 32 bit running in ESXi on a Dell 2850 in my colo and its working just fine. I even set the VM to allow large resolutions and am running the console at 1440x900. At first I also had the issue with just a black screen and white X pointer, but after reading I found that going into YaST > etc/sysconfig > Desktop > Display Manager > Setting of: DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS: > and changing the value from yes to no then back to yes again then rebooting, all was good.
Now on to my actual issue. Now that I can get to my system remotely via RealVNC and don't have to keep an open session logged in (ala Remote Desktop) I am finding that the window is stuck at 1024x768. I just cant find where I need to change the geometry settings to make it 1440 x 900 like my console window is in ESXi. Have been doing a lot of reading and have tried a bunch of stuff but none of it works, too much to list. I am obviously missing something and its probably really simple, but I am just not getting it.
Well i have HP D2832. A very old CRT Monitor from HP which have resolutions supported upto 1300 one but i can't get the resolutions after 1024x768. I want to get 1152x864 and cannot work to get it show in Monitors Panel.
In monitors panel it shows: Monitor: Unknown.
change my resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768..since the latter option is not available in my display settings?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use the Xubuntu-based BitDefender Rescue Disk, and having an issue. Posting in their forum didn't return anything, so I figured I should ask here next.
Using the default settings, the Rescue Disk starts in 800x600 and complains that the resolution is too low to run the app in graphic mode.
FYI, this servers + monitor run Windows just fine in 1024x768 @ 75Hz, and even higher.
I tried adding "screen=1024x768" to the command-line, to no avail.
FWIW, the default includes "vga=791" but I don't know what it means.
If someone had the same issue, how can I set the resolution to something higher so I can run BitDefender in graphic mode?

View 9 Replies View Relatedafter the latest kernel update (2.6.32-26), my computer will no longer start up with a screen resolution higher than 800x600. Before this update, my computer would sometimes startup with this problem, but this could usually be fixed with a restart (or two if necessary). At this resolution the panels and a lot of tool-bars will not display properly, so I am limited as to what I can do using the GUI. my video card is an S3 unichrome (I think. It is built-in to the motherboard so I don't know for certain) my screen is an old ctr one I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2.6.32-26 kernel.

Note the last line marked (**) - "from config file", but I only have 1280x1024 there ! And what does that mean

I have recently installed Ubuntu on my Toshiba Satellite A25-S207 Laptop. Everything runs great except that the resolution will not go above 800x600. I had this problem before on the same laptop and was able to fix it but cannot find the fix now (I had to wipe my laptop clean in order to remove some pesky Windows partitions and reinstall Ubuntu) I have found several "fixes" but none work. I tried the one below as well as it applies almost perfectly to my problem

Boot into recovery mode, when you get to the command line type:
sudo Xorg -configurewhich will create a default /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Add the lines:

However when I entered the "sudo Xorg -configure" line my computer spit back saying that "sudo" is not an acceptable command
I installed Debian 8 Jessie with the GNOME 3 desktop environment and I couldn't get pass the login screen after several reboots. Since I read that NVIDIA graphics are problematic, I decided to reinstall the system but selected Mate desktop, which appears to be less graphic intensive than GNOME 3. It worked. However, I can't get a higher resolution than 1024x768 (In Windows I could). The Mate settings in the "System → Preferences → Monitors" does not show higher resolutions.

Before I try to install proprietary drivers as instructed in [URL] ...., I'd like to see if there's anything to try first with the default stuff installed by the system, because that page says:
As of jessie, the need for the proprietary drivers is pretty much over - nouveau now works quite well and works with dual-headed displays by simple and easy configuring from within your desktop(for KDE see System_Settings/Hardware/Display_and_Monitor/Display_Configuration) . The proprietary drivers don't provide normal logging and can be a hidden source of problems.
I'm still on GNOME with 800x600 resolution but I can't switch to 1024x768 because there is no 1024x768 option under resolution settings.My monitor is 17" so 1024x768 should work fine.My graphic card is integrated GeForce 6150.
