I can't seem to get my computer to record the audio from an application... Sound Recorder, Audacity, and outRec all output files but they are just silence, even though when I see them in a media player they show the visualizations. I have followed a couple guides to no avail.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.
The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.
I run Kubuntu 11.04 and I have a C-Media CM8738 sound card. My problem is, my card won't record from the line-in jack, even when I set it to capture in alsamixer. Furthermore, the mic jack only records when both the line-in and the mic are set to capture in alsamixer. I'm using the same settings I used in 10.04, and the line-in captured fine then.
View 6 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I setup a pc. It contains an "Intel ICH5" sound card. Before I begin posting all the configuration stuff I've tried so far what the standard procedures are to set it all up for recording the sound card output (with Audacity)?
On my older computer it all worked fine but now I only get silent recordings. However sometimes (when I played on the controls the right way...) I get recordings where you can (amoung some noise) recognize the stuff I actually wanted to record very low... Apart from Audacity I've also tried

which didn't work either. That's why I think the problem is not related to Audacity but to the system.
Is the combination of OpenSuse 11.2 + ALSA + Intel ICH5 commonly known to cause such trouble?
I am unable to hear any sound at all using my M-audio delta 44 soundcard (which works fine in Windows - Dual boot).how I can get this working?

Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. with my motherboard the onboard back sound jack's audio is VERY quiet, but the front jacks wired into HD audio work fine. (I'm building an htpc, btw.)
I tried for weeks to get it to work, but eventually I just pulled a cheap Dynex DX-SC51 card from another machine and turns out it works, but now I can't use the inputs and headphone jack on the front of the case without going into system>preferences>sound and changing "output" back to "internal analog audio stereo"
Is there any way to activate these two audio devices at the same time?

I'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.

2, record from a usb microphone.I can do (1) just using sound recorder already, but of course no video.
As far as (2) is concerned, I set advanced->sound to pulse, DEFAULT, or hw:0,0 or hw:x,y (x and y are any combinations of 0, 1, or 2). (all the hw combinations cause gtk-recordmydesktop to crash)
I have a choice between the motherboard (STAC92xx) and the CMI8738 PCI card. (only the latter sees the usb microphone for some reason). The CMI8738 shows up as card 0 in /proc/asound.
Any idea of where I can find what numbers to put in gtk-recordmydesktop->advanced->sound? I am feeling rather stupid, but I couldn't make much sense of what I have found on google.Plus. I am using fedora core 10 but with a 2.6.29 kernel and I am only running pulseaudio.Jack looks complicated, but is that the only way to go.

Use Freecorder in Win7 to record streaming audio and save it as an mp3. Anyone know of a similar program for Ubuntu 10.04? Tried Sound Recorder but I guess that's just for a microphone. Streamripper only seems to work on ShoutCast.

View 6 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, I cannot record video with cheese. I cannot record video and audio on ....., just video. I can record audio on sound recorder. Why can't I get both? I have an e-machines (acer)em-250, 2g ram, 2ghz intel atom processor. Using Moon Os 4 neak (ubuntu 10.10 variant). I have downloaded and installed ffmpeg, and all other codecs. I can also get video on google voice and video, but no audio. Obviously I have a built-in webcam and mic. I've had this problem with every ubuntu distro I've tried since Oct. of 2010. This netbook came with Win. xp, and I had no problems with this issue then. I would just REALLY like to be able to use my webcam and be able to record video and audio.

Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.

If I understand the messages thatare printed to stdout when I run it, this transcodes the mp3 stream to an ogg filece I am using this to timeshift a program that I otherwise would not be able to listen to, I would prefer simply to dump the stream in mp3 format without transcoding. tried changing "ogg" "dump" but that produces an error about the --sout option. Can someone tell me how to modify this command so that it simply dumps the incoming stream to a file in mp3 format

I just can't figure out how to mix them both. I have tried a lot already and can only get either the mic or the audio playback to be recorded, not both. Can this be done using pavucontroll?
I have been search now for hours to find a solution (also here on the forum) for this and getting really frustrated now. Maybe i'm just missing something really obvious, so sorry if this is a stupid question.
I have alsa 1.0.22 on my system. I can plug in my pcmcia card into my laptop, and my computer register's it, but when I plug in my microdock, alsa still thinks it's an EMU 1010, which is just the basic one, and I have a 1616, so none of my inputs register anything at all, so I can't record audio. The only thing that seems to be working perfectly or at all, are the audio jack on the pc card, the headphone jack on the microdock, and the stereo mini out for speakers on the microdock. I think it's odd that the headphone and stereo outs work on the microdock, but I can't input any audio. how to get the rest of my microdock to work?

The PC has a 64-bit processor, so I've installed the x86_64 version of Fedora 10. I've done the basic steps of adding the Planet CCRMA repositories and installed their real time kernel, so I'm think I'm ready to try and get started. First, I need to get my sound cards set up right. I have an M-Audio Delta 1010LT card, which I'd like to use for working with music and the Intel HDA card built in to the motherboard, which I'd be happy to use for things like system notifications and other incidental sounds. Here is what the system tells me about the cards:

The only ones that produce any sounds when I test them are the HDA Analog device and the Delta 1010 device, but the weird thing is that output seems to be coming out of the built-in output jack (on the motherboard) in either case. Does the OS route output from the Delta 1010 through the built-in card to its output jack? Also, I've connected only the first two RCA analog outputs from the Delta 1010 to my desktop speaker system - should I use a different pair of outputs for testing? Playing a CD directly from the CD drive works, but playing music files from Amarok does not. I'll leave it at that for now. I posted the information above to the Planet CCRMA mailing list threee days ago, but I haven't gotten any responses.

the reason i want to record this is because i got a test i have to take... i gotta stay for like 2 hours.
I've been googling this problem a lot these last couple of days, with no luck.The thing is, I need to record audio from an old Tascam four track cassette recorder. I have three tracks on the tape and I want to record them to three seperate tracks on the computer. I don't have and cannot afford a decent multi-track soundcard (one of the reasons I'm using the cassette recorder, another being really cool drum sound). This means I cannot record the tracks seperately and sync them afterwards, because the speed of each playback isn't 100% reliable.
I have a USB guitar link from Behringer, which I could use and has one mono plug. Pulse Audio picks that up as a seperate input and with Jokosher I can assign line-in left and right to two seperate tracks and the USB link to a third one. The problem is however that Jokosher constantly freezes up and I've never been able to make it work properly. So my question is: is there any other way/software I could use to record from two seperate audio sources?
