Ubuntu Multimedia :: Using Maverick Meerkat - Freezes When Playing Media
Oct 23, 2010
I'm having an issue when ever I play any type of media with any media player everything starts acting buggy. Buggy such as I can't click anything nor will hot keys work properly. Seems as if everything is somewhat frozen but the courser can still move. This only happens when I play a media file. Using Maverick Meerkat!
I just had the idea of going back to command line music players and mp3blaster is what that came to my mind. I am running Kubuntu 10.10 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop with the default kernel. In an archived thread I read
mp3blaster -s /dev/dsp
would do the trick. But since all sound devices in my current laptop seem to be listed under /dev/snd as pcmC0D0p etc. I tried using,
mp3blaster -s /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
and this gave a sound device control error.
Just did some digging around and saw that I didn't have any oss modules running. Are they the culprits? If not how would I make mp3blaster use my current devices else do I need to reconfigure my kernel to have the oss modules?
Running Meerkat 10.10 with an ATI X1950 PRO, and with no visual enhancements I get page tearing on minimising windows and things like that.
If I turn on even basic visual effects, then Maverick slows down and becomes quite unresponsive. There are noticeably long delays between closing windows or clicking on a menu etc.
Is this because the open source ATI driver does not support hardware acceleration on my X1950 yet?
Is there any hope for me? Recent versions of Ubuntu seems to have taken a step back in that respect. I remember 8.04 worked really well!
I'm trying to use Kino in Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat with a Canon ZR45MC Digital Video Camcorder. Kino is capturing the video, but not the audio.I have it connected by a DV Firewire. I've used it with Windows Movie Maker that way, and it worked fine.
yesterday I upgraded of my ubuntu release from 10.04 to 10.10 and now, when I plug my mp3 creative zen player it doesn't work. The same player works very well with 10.04 and I can upload my mp3s directly from rythmnbox using drag&drop. Here my /var/log/syslog

When I play some video file, like some series (.avi), my system often freezes, the image become static and the sound starts looping. Ctr+Alt+Del does nothing and the only way to shut the computer down and restart the system is by holding the power button down for a long time. I've already searched the web for this problem but I find nothing. I have a Asus UX-30 with an Intel GMA X4500MHD.
I've been goign nuts trying to find the source of this niggling problem I've had since upgrading to Maverick. Whenever I'm watching anything I will get these short freezes of about half a second before he file continues playing. It will happen on average 3-4 times per hour on a video file.
For MP3 playback it's even worse, I'll get a stutter every couple of minutes, sometimes several in the same song. I reformatted completely and installed Maverick from scratch. For about a day I thought I had it sorted but then it started happening again.
I checked dmesg and there are a number of worrying lines like this:
Quote:
[40616.032093] ata1.00: failed command: WRITE DMA [40616.032108] ata1.00: cmd ca/00:20:df:b6:82/00:00:00:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 16384 out [40616.032111] res 40/00:00:00:4f:c2/00:00:00:00:00/10 Emask 0x24 (host bus error) [40616.032118] ata1.00: status: { DRDY }
[Code]....
The thing is that this problem occurs on all three of my hard drives (2 SATA, one IDE) so it's extremely unlikely all three have become damaged on the day I updated. Could this be a kernel problem of some sort? On an unrelated note all but one of my USB ports fails to recognise any portable music players.
I have a system running Ubuntu 11.04.When I play minecraft the system will freeze up.I cannot move the mouse or switch VT-1-7I am running latest driver from repo "nvidia-curent"My java install is Sun JAVA 32bitwhen i ssh from other computer and dmesg this message indicates a videocard problem
Ibus is very familiar to some users. And they find only one way to use Ibus as their keyboard layout. But its not possible to use ibus on Maverick Meerkat by default. you need to follow some instruction to do that. Here I am telling how I have done this...
Go to System> Administration> Synaptic Package Manager (you have to give your password) type " ibus-m17 " on search box. then just install the one appears. After installation the package, just close the synaptic. Now you are done to use Ibus.
Now go to System>Administration>Language Support (it may ask you to install the Language support, just click on the "Remind me later") Then select ' ibus ' from the "Keyboard input method system" under the Language tab.
Then close the window and restart the PC.
Thats the work I have done to get the iBus on Maverick Meerkat.
Is Ubuntu going to release a second version of Ubuntu 10.10 using Unity as well as keep the Maverick Meerkat version? I don't know about you, but I already hate the Unity version. It looks like the desktop at your ATM. This could be Ubuntu's Vista.
I'm having frequent freezing issues within Ubuntu 10.10 and it's beginning to become a regular thing. I've come to find out that it only happens when the visual effects settings are at normal or extra. Everything will be fine for whatever amount of time but after a while the entire system freezes. I get no response from ANYTHING at all, not even the keyboard/mouse. This is really annoying and I'm not quite sure what to do. I'm mostly new to the whole Linux scene. Machine Specs:
Maverick Meerkat won't boot. I have tried removing the option of quiet boot and after a whirl of text flies by the splash screen is reached, after a few seconds just blackness indefinitely. Does anybody have any suggestions of what I can do?
I have seen several threads and posts that still reflect pondering the Ubuntu 10.10 name. Just so you know, the name is official: Maverick Meerkat. Try to brainstorm names for 11.04 onward, please.
I am using Lucid for last 6 month and I am really amazing for its stability of using. And I am a Desktop user. However, Yesterday I have downloaded the 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Desktop (32 Bit). I have made a Startup Disk using UBUNTU Startup Disk Creator for that .iso which I have downloaded yesterday. That is a USB Live Disk. But the sad news is its not being able to boot my PC. where my PC configuration is not so bad.
Pentium Dual Core E2200 @2.20 Ghz Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2C motherboard 2GB DDR2 RAM with 800 bus speed 1TB HDD
(I also tried disconnecting the HDD and my DVD Rom, same problem arises) The boot screen is trying to boot the PC but its doing for a long time, for about 10 mins, nothing reports it. I have press ESC to see wats happening beside this. Then I have seen a text there. Which is similar to the below (may have some spelling mistakes) "Process 283 Glib warning getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)" I hve checked the .iso SUM several times, where everything is ok.

I can chose Shutdown from the menu but the system gets to the point where the power supply should 'click' and shut off. It doesn't, it cycles and the system reboots. It wasn't doing this in 10.04, at least not towards the end prior to updating to 10.10 beta/rc/final. Also, 10.10 didn't do this either, until recently. (Current default = 2.6.35-22-generic)
Here's the funny thing though; if I choose a previous version from the GRUB2 menu, 2.6.32-21-generic for example, the login screen won't allow mouse nor keyboard control but will shut down normally w/ a single, momentary push of the Power Button. Now, there are folks w/ a seemingly similar problem, but in their case they can't shutdown at all. My trouble is a shutdown just triggers a restart.
I've been running Ubuntu on an IBM Thinkpad T42 for about 3 years and have never had any instability but my Meerkat upgrade 10.10 about a week ago has never been right and seems to be getting worse. It's almost impossible to use the Internet. Whether Epiphany or Firefox, the screen keeps going grey and regularly freezes the computer completely so that NO keyboard commands work and only a hard restart will do. I also have problems streaming audio feeds with RP 11 or VLC. VLC is more of a problem which I find odd as it is solid in Windoze.
PS The instability isn't only Internet related. There are lots of strange little things like authentication windows not closing after I enter password and hit Enter or click OK, not being able to paste in Terminal (sometimes not others), toolbard in apps appearing differently sometimes, stuff like that.
I installed the compiz-settings-manager but the "Advanced Desktop Settings Manager" did not appear in the menu. Hence I cannot enable the Cube. Any idea what's going on here?
if there's anyway to have different wallpapers on each workspace in 32bit Ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition maverick meerkat? ive tried many different things posted on the forum to no avail... i think they were for earlier versions.
I was just wondering how long I have to upgrade to 11.04 until Maverick Meerkat is EOL. I have talked to other people, and they say to wait about a month until after the release to fix all bugs and stuff. Is this a good Idea? Or should I update now and just get it over with?
How are your experiences upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10? I'm thinking about it but I'm hesitating since there is no way I could make any backups and I've had some bad experiences with Debian dist-upgrades. Have you upgraded already? If so, have you had any trouble?
I currently have Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick netbook edition installed and I am using Unity. I understand there are updates to Unity since it was bundled with Ubuntu. When I do:
Code: $ unity --version I get: Quote: Unity 0.2.46
How do I update to a more recent version of Unity? Or do I have to wait until I upgrade to Natty?
I have been using ubuntu for a year or so with little trouble until now. I have done a fresh install of 10.10 and my second monitor doesnt work. I have Intel G31 graphics. It was working fine with 10.4 and previously 9.4, it displays the bios splash screen and then nothing. System>preferences>monitors does not show it as present at all. Here is my lshw -C video:
there's a way to update the OS from 10.04 to 10.10 without having to redo my LiveCD or something? Also I was wondering if, in doing this I can save my old ubuntu account with all of the extra apps I downloaded, and my files?
I am unable to shutdown ubuntu after upgrading it to Maverick Meerkat.
I can do Ctrl + Alt + F4 and then Ctrl + Alt + Del but it does not let me use the taskbar button. When I press the shutdown button it just takes me to login page.
I really don't know where to post this but my computer runs a lot slower now (amd64,athlon 11x2 235e, nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430, maverick meerkat) so I have been trying to remove stuff like printers, evolution, things I have no use for but the package manager only lets me remove bits and pieces of apps...why if you remove those items will the gnome desktop have to be uninstalled too? What does the desktop have to do with emails or printing? I am from the old school...if you don't need it remove it. Some stuff I have removed is Openoffice (that really cleared some space!) and replaced it with Abiword, also got rid of Shotwell photo manager, Empathy, Bittorrent, Gwibber, Telepathy, and parts of evolution...any way to completely remove Evolution? Any other programs I can get rid of without uninstalling my desktop? And what about all those useless printer files? I ran virus scanner and computer janitor also.
