Ubuntu Multimedia :: Master Volume Does Not Adjust USB Headphones

Jan 30, 2010

Ever since upgrading to Karmic, I haven't been able to adjust master volume when my USB headphones are chosen as the output device. If I try to adjust my master volume (via the media keys on my keyboard or gnome-volume-control), the output volume doesn't change until it's entirely muted. I can adjust the master volume fine when I'm outputting through internal audio.I am able to adjust the volume fine on an application-specific basis, but this becomes quite a nuisance, especially when I switch between internal audio (where master volume is regulated) and USB audio (where master volume is always at full-blast). This worked fine in Jaunty, and stopped working once I updated to Karmic. My USB headphones are listed as "Storm HP-USB500 5.1 Headset".

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PCM Volume Not Affected By Master Volume Control With Alsa

Mar 7, 2011

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an old DFI KT600AL motherboard based system using the onboard VIA 3058 AC97 audio (because it supports front panel audio connections and none of the add-in PCI soundcards I have do). I have an old Gateway/STB TVPCI TV tuner card (mainly wanted the FM radio part to work) hooked up to the cd audio connector on the motherboard because the digital audio over the pci bus apparently isn't supported for this card (neither is the onboard analog mixer on the tv tuner card, I had to hack a CD-ROM audio cable and solder it to the audio outputs of the tv tuner module on the TV tuner card). When I use the master channel as the master channel (selected in Kmix) then as one would expect it affects the output volume of all other audio playing on the system except that which is being handled by the PCM channel. On Windows the PCM channel was also affected by the "Volume Control" slider such that ALL volume levels were reduced when moving the slider. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to make it work like this on Kubuntu.

First off I should warn you that I (like many users of older hardware that is not properly supported under PulseAudio) have uninstalled PulseAudio (because it's garbage) and am using Alsa to manage my audio hardware. I would think that there would be some way to do this using the 'amixer' application to add the PCM channel as a component of the 'Master' channel so that when the volume is turned down using the 'Master' channel control it will affect the PCM channel too (at least the output to the speaker jack, not necessarily the capture or mix volume though), but I'm not really any good at doing things from a terminal window and the options for the amixer command kind of confused me.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Very Little Control Over Volume Using Master Volume Level?

Apr 10, 2011

My volume control seems to have only three settings: TOO LOUD, VERY QUIET, OFF. If I adjust the Master volume slider from the Panel, only about the right 1/8th has any effect and if I slide it past about the 95% mark, I get no sound at all. At the far-right end of the volume control, I get total volume. It's basically like the slider only has any impact in the top 5% of it's space. Below 95% of the slide, there is zero volume.

It's so drastic, that one tap down of the volume button on my keyboard kills the sound (because it nudges the slider past that 95% mark). This happens in the Audio settings, etc., system-wide. If I adjust the volume for an individual app from within the app (MPlayer, for example) it behaves exactly as expected (that is, app volume works smoothly, it's just master volume that has this issue). I have run through most of the "obvious" things-- I'm wondering if I broke something by installing the extra KDE packages to get Amarok to work.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Have Volume Buttons On Laptop Change 'pcm' Channel Volume Rather Than 'master'?

Jun 13, 2010

I'm running squeeze (last updated today), and everything has been working great. There is only thing that would simplify my life minutely..Anybody know how can I have the volume buttons on my laptop change the "pcm" channel volume rather than "master"? If they could control pcm, then I could adjust the volume coming out of my headphones or my computer speaker (both controlled by pcm, but not master...seems strange to me) with just one click.I tried to find this info online, but all results seem to refer to an older version. The simple "click here, set this" solution no longer is possible.

Debian Multimedia :: Volume Granularity With The Headphones?

May 21, 2010

I have a Dell Latitude D830, with an intel sound card (see below), and I'm having problems with the granularity of volume control off the headphone jack... In particular, I find that if the combination of master volume and headphone volume is too low, then the headphone jack just stops outputting...

(I.E. Put master at 100%, and I can take headphones down to a few percent, but the lower bound of the headphones is still way too loud, or vise versa, put master at like 10%, and the hadphones will only output for about 80% to 100% range) This is problematic as I use earbuds, and anything over 30% is pretty deafening... I ran gentoo on this laptop for a couple years, no problems, and originally installed debian stable, that worked fine, then changed to debian testing, and ran thru a massive package update and kernel upgrade, and afterward, volume control problems...

Ubuntu / Apple :: MacBook (Pro) 5,1 / 5,2 - Master Volume Does Not Affect The Headphone Output

Jan 13, 2010

Whilst sound works for MBP5,1 / 5,2 under Karmic, it could definitely be better - mainly the master volume does not affect the headphone output, and the speakers don't automute when headphones are plugged in. However, I've finally got around to writing a patch for alsa which fixes this - the patch is against the latest version of alsa-drivers (1.0.22.1). If you want to test it (since so far I've only tested it on my MBP5,1 - any feedback from MacBook 5,1 / MB(P) 5,2 owners would be great too) follow these instructions: First make sure you don't have any versions of linux-backports-modules-alsa installed:

Slackware :: Couldn't Adjust The PCM Volume From Either Alsamixer Or Amixer

However, I found there was no sound when I booted it to run level 4 (xfce) trying to play some music on yesterday. After googled a lot, I thought there must be some wrong with my alsa driver, because I couldn't adjust the PCM volume from either alsamixer or amixer. In fact, there is even no PCM section in it, but two sections named "IEC958" and "IEC958 D" instead with no "pvolume" capability. Here is some outputs:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 - USB Headphones Max Volume Too Low

Jun 6, 2011

I'm trying to use Logitech USB headphones with KDE4 OpenSUSE 11.4 on my laptop computer. They work perfectly on Windows 7 and on my friend's Ubuntu with Gnome. After plugging in the headphones, I went to YaST sound module and configured them with automatic configuration. Next, I switched the primary output to headphones in KMix and muted the internal audio just in case. The output is correctly directed to the headphones but the volume is too low. It is at maximum in KMix but it is still too low to listen to anything.

Using the buttons on the headphones displays the volume gauge on the screen but it doesn't do anything. I've taken a look at the Phonon configuration GUI and it doesn't offer any useful options except that playing the test sounds on headphones confirms that the volume is too low. I'm not eager to use command line tools for sound in OpenSUSE, but I'll try if it's the only way. I'm not even sure how exactly the whole driver/OSS/ALSA/PulseAudio/Phonon/KMix hierarchy works. I once ran alsaconfig on my desktop OpenSUSE 11.x and it absolutely destroyed my sound settings.

Hardware :: Alsa: Set Gnome-volume-control-applet To Master Channel?

Fedora Hardware :: Speakers Not Working Properly / Can't Adjust Volume

Aug 9, 2011

I've had this problem since I fresh installed Fedora on my laptop: I can play sounds fine, but I can't mute/make it louder or softer. I couple days ago (right after I installed) there was a notification saying there was an error with something in the sound and it was "falling back to default". Recently, the notification stopped popping up but the problem persists.

I'm not 100% positive as to what type of speakers my laptop has. I know they're made by JBL, but on Windows they're handled by "RealTek HD Audio Manager" and in Device Manager there's 2 different audio devices: Realtek High Definition Audio and ATI HDMI Audio. Neither of them say they're JBL brand. The most information I can get out of the specs of my laptop found on Newegg is that they're "JBL stereo speakers (1.5 watt x 2)".

Ubuntu :: Volume Pop-up + Remove USB Headphones = Ubuntu Crashes?

Feb 19, 2011

Removing usb headphones (I tried two brands) from my computer while the volume pop-up is up renders Ubuntu completely unresponsive, it crashes. It leaves behind a black screen with a single underscore at the top left and my mouse pointer (although once it froze with the everything intact, just frozen - did X crashing or something?).I believe it's not that I'm changing the volume, but the pop-up that is crashing things. If I wait for the pop-up to disappear, everything's fine and it doesn't crash when I remove my headphones.

So I removed notify-osd, restarted, and sure enough, that familiar volume pop-up went away. However, it was replaced by its ugly cousin (see attachment), which suffers the same crashing problem. So I was hoping someone would recognise this pop-up and know what package it came from so I can uninstall it (I was just messing with my sound, so it could come from some pulse-audio utility, jackd, fluidsynth - any of that junk).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: USB Soundcard Volume Controls With Laptop Volume Keys?

Oct 29, 2010

I've got my xubuntu 10.10 install just about perfect on a little acer aspire d250, apart from a small sound useability issue: In the interests of simplicity and resource usage I removed pulseaudio. After a bit of fiddling I got it so that my USB soundcard (ProDac) is recognized and automatically set as the default soundcard when plugged in. Any sound applications automatically use the USB sound if it present, no need to around with pulse. The only problem is that my netbook's volume control keys still only control the master volume of the inbuilt soundcard, and have no effect on the usb sound. Does anyone know of a way to change which sound device these keys actually effect? I'd like to write a little script so that when the usb device is detected the keys are remapped.

Server :: Local Master Browser Do Not Sync Their List With The Domain Master

Nov 13, 2009

I'm managing a residential network. Each flat is its own subnet, and can only communicate with the other flats through a router (i.e. no broadcast). 95% of these 300 subnets only contains windows computers (from lambda users).

My final goal is to be able to browse the entire network from any computer.

I set up a samba server acting as a wins server, and every computer is aware of it because it is registered in the dhcp. So name resolution is working fine for everyone.

The same samba server is set to be the "Domain master browser":

workgroup = WORKGROUP
wins support = yes
prefered master = yes
local master = yes
domain master = yes
os level = 65

When I browse the network (using "net view" or "browstat view"), I can only see the servers which are in the same subnet as the domain master browser.

Now, when in a subnet the computers arrange themselves to find a "local master browser", the only visible computers are the one in that subnet.

What I don't understand is why all the local masters don't synchronize their lists with the domain master.

So, to sum up, every subnet get the following behaviour:

-if a local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the same subnet.

-if no local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the subnet of the domain master.

-if I add another samba, configured as a local master winning all elections, then the magic is working and the lists are synchronized.

What is expected:
-every computer can see all the computer from all the subnets.
