Ubuntu Multimedia :: Exaile Rc 3.2 Again No Sorting By Album Artist

Jun 16, 2010

I was glad to see another release of exaile. I'm always happy to see improving mainstream desktop apps, especially when they start being much superior to their commercial counterparts in both, quality and quantity, of features. But as if developers are ignoring the simple usability problems - again - exaile like all other gnome music players (apart from amarok, but that's kde!) can't browse your library by album artist!

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Replace Amazon MP3 Artist Tags With Composer Information?

Mar 28, 2011

I recently downloaded several MP3 albums from Amazon. Most of these albums contain works from several different composers. The problem is, the Rhythmbox music player in Ubuntu Maverick won't display composer tags. I am therefore searching for a way to overwrite the artist tag of each file with the composer info. This overwriting would need to be a batch process.

Let's say that I have an album of the New York Philharmonic performing works of a dozen different composers.I would like for the correct composer to overwrite New York Philharmonic in each file. Is it possible to use a program such as EasyTag do what I need? Please provide detailed instructions and/or a link to such details.

Ubuntu :: Ordering Of Windows For Compiz Scale?

Jun 23, 2011

I have a dual monitor setup and I've used Scale for a few days now, but I'm still confused about the expected ordering of the windows within the same workspace. For example, the last focused window isn't necessarily placed at a fixed spot, e.g., top left corner. It seems that if a window on my left monitor is last focused and I invoke it on my right screen, then it'd appear on the top left corner. However, if a window on my right monitor is last focused, it gets past just the last focused window on my left monitor. The last focused window on my left monitor eventually shifts to the bottom right corner.

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Widget Ordering When On The Left Hand Side?

May 13, 2010

On Windows, the widget set for windows is on the right and the widget order is minimise, fullscreen, close. Linux in general (And Ubuntu's themes specifically) *generally* mirrored this.On OSX, the widgets are on the left and the order is close, minimise, fullscreen. On Ubuntu 10.4 the widget set has been moved to the left hand side, but is just a move of the standard windows order. Is it possible (in a way that won't break future themes or edits, so by using the GUI preferrably but I can't find any option) to change the widget ordering?

I like the Dust Sand theme fondow borders etc, which doesn't actually show icon differences for the 3, just 3 dots. As a user of Windows and OSX as well as Ubuntu I keep finding myself clicking the wrong one as my brain just expects them to be in the OSX order when on the left (it just makes sense in my head for close to be on the outside edge, whichever side that may be, and for minimiseo come beformaximise/fullscreen when reading left-right). I realise other people may (and probably will) disagree with me on this, especially non-mac users, so it'd be preferable to be able to customise the order rather than force one or the other on people.

Software :: MBR, Boot Partition And BIOS Ordering

Feb 28, 2010

I installed F12 onto a 4 disk SW RAID5 array. sda has a /boot partition and a <swap> partition and all of the rest of the storage is raided to make the / partition.

The installer listed sda as the HDD with the boot partition so I updated the MBR on sda durring install. After the reboot I was sent to a grub prompt. I could run,

grub> find /grub/stage1(hd1,0) and then grub> configfile (hd1,0)/grub/grub.conf and the system boots.

I'm not sure if this a BIOS disk ordering problem. I tried switching a few SATA cables, to try and reorder disks but I couldn't get to the grub prompt with the different configurations I tried.

Should I try copying the MBR from one disk to another? It seems like it's getting past the MBR otherwise grub wouldn't load at all, so is this a grub bug?

Ubuntu :: Apache2 Mod_Rewrite - Passing The Artist=$1 To The Server GET Vars

Sep 9, 2010

I've given a bit of support using Mod_rewrite to use magical urls to redirect to scripts, but when I migrated to Ubuntu's Apache2... I'm lost. I basically want to rewrite like this:

Code: RewriteRule ^artist/(.+)/$ artist.php?artname=$1 But I noticed that it wasn't passing the artist=$1 to the server GET vars. Then I noticed that if I changed the name of the file in both the rule and the file system to artists.php, typing artist/blah/ no longer was found. So then I realized that if I removed the rewrite rule artist/hello/ would still resolve to artist.php without any parameters my htaccess is like so:

General :: Recommend A STUDIO / ARTIST Distro?

Feb 5, 2011

There are several articles, questionairres and forum threads around the net helping newbies to Linux choose a distro, but there appear to be none which specifically help people choose one suitable for design, studio or home recording.

- I'm a professional graphic designer who also dabbles in music production in my own time.

- I currently use Vista 64 on a reasonably powerful HP desktop.

- I'm not afraid of dabbling in basic programming, but overall I'm a beginner in that area.

My criteria:

- A OS that runs smoothly and reliably.

- Has a concise range of applications, but includes the best of the best. Quality over quanity.

- Has good hardware support.I don't want to spend weeks trying to get my audio interface, scanner and graphics tablet working.

- Is very secure. The main reason I'm moving to Linux is because my laptop eventually became riddled with Trojans despite my best efforts at keeping it clean.

- Preferably supports 64 bit.

- Looks slick (yes I know that's a bit superficial and it's not necessarily what Linux is about, but if I'm gonna be staring at a screen all day every day it might as well be attractive).

I've done a bit of research, and looked elsewhere on this forum for advice but it's strangely lacking (or I'm missing it). So far Ubuntu Studio, Sabayon, ArtistX and PureDyne look pretty promising. GNUartist, Open Artist and AV Linux also seem worth considering.Obviously I'm prepared to try a few different ones to see which one i gel with. I just wondered if my above criteria screams out for one or other of the available distributions, so that I can have a good starting point.

Software :: Quod Libet And Last.fm - Reversed Artist/track?

Feb 10, 2010

My last.fm scrobbler is, for some reason, reversing my track titles and artist names. My music is all tagged appropriately. For example, if I play:

Artist: John Coltrane
Title: Giant Steps

It will be scrobbled as:

Artist: Giant Steps
Title: John Coltrane.

I'm running Arch and using QL's default plugin. This also occurs when I use the lastfmsubmitd daemon. I have tried defining different artist/track patterns within the plugin options with no luck, though I may be doing it wrong. I used <title> for <artist> for the pattern definitions.

EDIT:Audio scrobbling works in Exaile, so now I know for sure that my tagging is not at fault.

EDIT 2Well I found the solution. I updated qlscrobbler.py with the version found here:

[URL] Now everything scrobbles correctly.

Ubuntu One :: Way To Ignore Whole Directories

Sep 25, 2010

is there any way to ignore whole directories in Ubuntu-One? I figured out that you can use /etc/ xdg/ ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf to ignore files by adding a regex to ignore.default, but I assume this only applies to files. So, how can I avoid the syncing of some subdirectories of my synced folders? I guess I could use symlinks as a workaround, because I read somewhere that Ubuntu-One wouldn't follow them.

Ubuntu :: -cp Recursive But Ignore Some Source

Jul 4, 2010

I'm still trying to learn, but seem to be hitting a few walls when it comes to man pages. I don't know where else to look so I hope to get some help here - or at least another idea. I'm trying to learn c++ as well as *nix terminal commands, and I like to make a backup of my compiled program and .c files each time I reach a successful compile (99-100% bug free).

My problem is I like to use an alias instead of a script to backup my work onto a USB. I don't want the hundreds of log files (10K+) copied since I usually delete them anyway.

My alias:

How do I tell cp to ignore the folder '~/work/log' during the backup?

If cp doesn't have such an option, I am open to other ideas, but I would still prefer something that I can alias since I already backup my .bash_aliases file.
