Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Restart A Video Driver (NVidia)
Sep 21, 2010I'm using my Ubuntu 10.04 as a server, headless or with HDMI receiver/TV setup. There is a lot's of topics how to make it work headless/VNS. I found the least trouble is to make a fake VGA from old VGA cable and 3 resistors. However, when I start my Ubuntu with Fake VGA it won't switch to HDMI when I turn my Receiver/HDMI on. If I restart X it is fastest way to pick the HDMI Video/7.1 Audio up. I can do it via VNC or ssh and going to do it with 'irexec' so my wife will be able to redetect the HDMI and run XBMC with one button click of the remote.The problem is restarting X kills all my GUI apps (KTorrent, ...). Is there a way to force the video driver to restart or redetect the screens?

Nov 12, 2010every time I reboot and play a video file the colours are messed up. I need to manually increase then decrease the hue or saturation to get the picture to normal in smplayer. The colours aren't competely inversed as in the common bug with the totem sliders, they're just far too red and bright.Smplayer is the latest from PPA. I've checked the totem settings and everything is OK. It only takes two key presses to resolve but it's a pain, to be honest, so if anyone knows what causes this and how to fix it permanently I'd be much obliged.

Apr 16, 2010I run Ubuntu 9.04 on with proprietary NVidia driver 180.44.When I change anything in the nvidia-settings, e.g. screen resolution, brightness, second screen etc, everything works fine - except for the fact that I can't play any video files in any player. Sound is there, players don't display any error messages, but the image is black. Flash video within browsers is fine, though.Things go back to normal with the new settings kept after restarting X. However, having to restart X and lose my desktop set up every time when I just want to connect my laptop to my office screen is highly inconvenient.Is this a bug or expected behaviour that I have to live with?

Apr 5, 2010Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

Oct 17, 2010When I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?

May 30, 2011this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.

Apr 11, 2011I am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:
- No audio via HDMI see [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S [URL]
As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".
How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?

Jul 6, 2011I have an integrated intel video and latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver(using only stable repo). Now I wanna watch high-res video. From the bits of info collected from all over internet I understood that I need to:
1.aptitude install libdrm libva.
2.compile or find the .deb mplayer-vaapi and install it.
3.add -vo vaapi -va vaapi to the mplayer command line in gnome-mplayer.
My question : is that correct or did I miss something? Do I have to compile latest libdrm and libva or the ones from the squeeze repo will be good? Do I need kms enabled, i.e. install firmware-linux-nonfree?

Problem is very similar to: Problems playing mkv HD films in opensuse but not windows but with enough differences that I start a new thread:
* playback in VLC does not work -- there is only sound
* playback in SMplayer works, however -- when I scroll forward, the video freezes and sound continues, to unfreeze video I have scroll a tiny bit backward
I tried changing the video ouput driver (in SMplayer) from xv to xv/noveu-nvidia, it didn't help. Please note, that I use the same settings (initially) as before in OS11.1.

Jan 9, 2010MeTv (me-tv) 1.1.2 works fine after boot, epg recording and all, but after quitting it it will not connect to dvb-t card again with message; "Failed to lock to channel" Killing residual me-tv processes does not help, only reboot. All the while mplayer dvb://"channel" does work!
mencoder works as well, so there seems to be no problem with drivers etc. dmesg says all is loaded at boot.
I'm running kernel 2.6.31 with a Hauppage 1300 pci card.
EDIT: same problem with 1.1.3

May 27, 2010I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. After the upgrade, mplayer no longer play a DVD.
I put the missing codecs, as described here: [url] Now DVD worked.
Also during the upgrade package libvdpau1 was disappeared, I restored it from the default repository. Then vdpau worked, but only after a reboot. After restarting gdm (select "Log Out" or sudo service gdm stop/start, or Ctrl + Alt + Backspace) an error:
After reboot everything works again.I updated libvdpau1 from repository [url], but it did not help, same error.

Driver set the default, 195.36.15-0ubuntu3, from the standard repositories.
In Karmic was 185, everything worked.
I noticed this feature, I do not know whether it is connected with subj:
Immediately after loading the gdm starts with the seventh console, ie when you exit the virtual console by Ctrl + Alt + F2 again to hit Ctrl + Alt + F7.
After you restart gdm is in the eighth console, Ctrl + Alt + F8.
If I run a guest session, it starts with the ninth console.
In the karmic like always with the seventh started.
When booting too strange things happen.
Ubuntu Karmic I installed with Alternate CD to an encrypted LVM.
I booting in text mode, ie without "quiet splash".
Booting reached requiring a password, when entering the password does not display an asterisk, after entering the password then continue normally.
After upgrading to Lucid booting lines are shown as a twisted, ladder when entering the password it displays asterisks and when I enter each character again displays prompt.
I did not like, and I again put the "quiet splash".

Jul 14, 2010Basically I'm running Rosegarden, fire up qsynth, load a soundfont and when it's restarting the fluidsynth engine it just hangs and does nothing. Has anyone run into this before? It's really quite irritating because as far as I know it's the only free synth with support for soundfonts.

May 29, 2010I've just bought a new monitor - Viewsonic VA2213w and am trying to set it up with Lucid. The resolution required is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I have an NVidia GTS250 with the proprietary driver v195.36.24 installed. I can set the right resolution in the nvidia-settings app, but it will not survive a restart. X always reverts to 1024x768. I have manually edited xorg.conf now to try to force the mode. The GDM login screen displays at the correct resolution, but on logging in X changes the resolution. Xorg.0.log shows the resolution being correctly set to 1920x1080 initially, then right at the end for some reason it is reset to 1024x768.

Jan 30, 2011I have recently obtained a HTPC which has Mythbuntu pre-installed and already working with a remote it came with. I have another remote that I have changed over to (including the ir receiver) as it had easier button layout. Setup seems to have gone fine, but when the pc is restarted (turned of and on) then the ir receiver is not reloaded in the usb port. This was not a problem with the old remote. If once the pc is on I unplug and re-plug the ir receiver then it loads and works fine.
Running a lsusb in terminal shows that it is definitely not loaded on restart but is when re-plugged in.
