Basically I'm running Rosegarden, fire up qsynth, load a soundfont and when it's restarting the fluidsynth engine it just hangs and does nothing. Has anyone run into this before? It's really quite irritating because as far as I know it's the only free synth with support for soundfonts.

I have a program running on my server which I want to restart in the event that it ever crashes. Someone suggested "Watchdog" to me, but it appears to me that watchdog restarts the whole system, not the program. I couldn't find much documentation for it. Another suggestion I was given was crontab, except that I don't want to relaunch the program every 60 seconds, as it doesn't run on screen or anything, it forks itself into the background after launching it. Perhaps a bash script that would check to see if the program were running or not, and if it weren't, relaunch it? Not sure how to do that, I've never written bash. In any case, I just want to keep this program running full time.

It seems as if for some unknown reason while i am using ubuntu my monitor would go dark with a message at the top with something along the lines of:Batter meter check [OK]after a few seconds of the screen like this Ubuntu would crash and go strait to the login screen as if i had just turned on my computer... This is a very serious problem for i am a student who types alot of essays and needs a reliable computer.

The console keyboard and mouse are inoperational, and the monitor display seems to be going through test patterns, which turns out to be that the monitor is trying to sync to video output which is switching on about once a second. I can ssh into the box and see that many processes that were running are no longer running, for example gnome-session... and that once per second there is a new X process invoked with a different auth-for-gem parameter, per below:

I have installed Fedora 12 as a clean installl, everything worked perfect. But lately either after installing an update or making some parameter changes, while restarting my system it just comes up with lots of error messages and crashes. I have to press the switch off button to shutdown. I don't know from where to get that error message to post here

I've installed both fluidsynth and qsynth, but get this error everytime I run qsynth. I'm trying to use my m-audio keyrig 49 just to practice playing the piano. I don't really care about having a whole DAW and whatever, I just want to play my keyboard. Maybe there is a better way than qsynth? Also, this happens:

I don't know that it has to do with my qsynth problem or not. I just thought I'd throw it in just in case it does. Also, xmms recognizes my keyboard in the alsa preferences, where the mixer device is.
I have a java service that needs to be run in a gnu screen session so that I can -r into it to access it's interactive shell. I would like this to run at start-up. More importantly, it crashes frequently so I need the service to restart itself when it crashes. How do I go about doing this myself? My previous experience with shell scripting amounts to putting ./service in a file and marking it executable. This will be running on a FreeBSD server, but I might put it on a Linux server soon also. So any caveats on the differences would be useful information.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Squeeze 6.01a from the xfce iso image on an old PIII which has been running Lenny with xfce without any problems. It's a fresh install after a reformat.
Sounds and multimedia apps like gxine and mplayer all worked fine on Lenny and other older versions. Now they don't - not gxine, not mplayer not even VLC. Run from the menu they all abort - and if run in an xterm they all crash with the following message -
Assertion 'pthread_mutex_unlock(&m->mutex) == 0' failed at pulsecore/mutex-posix.c:108, function pa_mutex_unlock(). Aborting.
MeTv (me-tv) 1.1.2 works fine after boot, epg recording and all, but after quitting it it will not connect to dvb-t card again with message; "Failed to lock to channel" Killing residual me-tv processes does not help, only reboot. All the while mplayer dvb://"channel" does work!
mencoder works as well, so there seems to be no problem with drivers etc. dmesg says all is loaded at boot.
I'm running kernel 2.6.31 with a Hauppage 1300 pci card.

i have been using a webcam on my netbook in ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix. it seems to not detect the camera after a while and i have to reboot to get it to work again. is there anyway that i can restart the driver or something without rebooting the netbook?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. After the upgrade, mplayer no longer play a DVD.
I put the missing codecs, as described here: [url] Now DVD worked.
Also during the upgrade package libvdpau1 was disappeared, I restored it from the default repository. Then vdpau worked, but only after a reboot. After restarting gdm (select "Log Out" or sudo service gdm stop/start, or Ctrl + Alt + Backspace) an error:
After reboot everything works again.I updated libvdpau1 from repository [url], but it did not help, same error.

I noticed this feature, I do not know whether it is connected with subj:
Immediately after loading the gdm starts with the seventh console, ie when you exit the virtual console by Ctrl + Alt + F2 again to hit Ctrl + Alt + F7.
After you restart gdm is in the eighth console, Ctrl + Alt + F8.
If I run a guest session, it starts with the ninth console.
In the karmic like always with the seventh started.
When booting too strange things happen.
Ubuntu Karmic I installed with Alternate CD to an encrypted LVM.
I booting in text mode, ie without "quiet splash".
Booting reached requiring a password, when entering the password does not display an asterisk, after entering the password then continue normally.
After upgrading to Lucid booting lines are shown as a twisted, ladder when entering the password it displays asterisks and when I enter each character again displays prompt.
I did not like, and I again put the "quiet splash".
When attempting to run pSX on Ubuntu 9.04 (and the 9.10 livecd), it crashes with a segfault. I -have- read [URL] and tried shutting down pulseaudio as recommended there. However:

How do I get pSX working? I tried copying the psx.ini file from another machine because the thread says pSX works fine after you change the sound device used, but it still segfaults when I try running it.

I've a ATI HD 4290 video-card and I installed the closed drivers of ATI/AMD. Everything worked fine until I updated Ubuntu. Yesterday, I received an automatic update from the Ubuntu-servers and I accepted this update.
But after I updated everything and restart my computer, X.org won't work. When I start my computer, I get this. (Translated: Your monitor, video card and your input devices couldn't be detected correctly. You have to choose manually the correct settings.)
So, I was just importing some images to F-Spot, when it suddenly crashed.
Now, when I try starting it, it flashes with some error that I can't read. It appears and disappears very quickly.

I've just bought a new monitor - Viewsonic VA2213w and am trying to set it up with Lucid. The resolution required is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I have an NVidia GTS250 with the proprietary driver v195.36.24 installed. I can set the right resolution in the nvidia-settings app, but it will not survive a restart. X always reverts to 1024x768. I have manually edited xorg.conf now to try to force the mode. The GDM login screen displays at the correct resolution, but on logging in X changes the resolution. Xorg.0.log shows the resolution being correctly set to 1920x1080 initially, then right at the end for some reason it is reset to 1024x768.

I'm using my Ubuntu 10.04 as a server, headless or with HDMI receiver/TV setup. There is a lot's of topics how to make it work headless/VNS. I found the least trouble is to make a fake VGA from old VGA cable and 3 resistors. However, when I start my Ubuntu with Fake VGA it won't switch to HDMI when I turn my Receiver/HDMI on. If I restart X it is fastest way to pick the HDMI Video/7.1 Audio up. I can do it via VNC or ssh and going to do it with 'irexec' so my wife will be able to redetect the HDMI and run XBMC with one button click of the remote.The problem is restarting X kills all my GUI apps (KTorrent, ...). Is there a way to force the video driver to restart or redetect the screens?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently obtained a HTPC which has Mythbuntu pre-installed and already working with a remote it came with. I have another remote that I have changed over to (including the ir receiver) as it had easier button layout. Setup seems to have gone fine, but when the pc is restarted (turned of and on) then the ir receiver is not reloaded in the usb port. This was not a problem with the old remote. If once the pc is on I unplug and re-plug the ir receiver then it loads and works fine.
Running a lsusb in terminal shows that it is definitely not loaded on restart but is when re-plugged in.
I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.

I am trying to convert movies to mpeg4 or more specifically formatted to play on my blackberry curve. I followed installation guide from this tutorial [URL]. Everything installed and the program works but when I add a file and pick presets and hit convert the terminal pops up and says the following:

So I press Enter and the terminal closes, than... nothing happens just staring at the winff screen.
I really have no idea where to go with this. I found a link from the forums earlier on these common crashes but cant seem to find it again.
I just installed Dorame (The Pandora client) and it crashes when I try to run it. It gets through the check for updates etc. But when it gets to opening the main window, it crashes.

Same thing happens with Listen and Rhythmbox, but with a segmentation fault.
Amarok doesn't even get past the splash screen, but that's more or less okay because I'd rather stick with gnome.
Guayadeque is the only decent music player that works, and even it isn't without its issues. Audacious also works, but I don't like Audacious(the whole "one big playlist" system... ew).
Of course if I had my way I'd skip gnome music players entirely and go with foobar2000, but wouldn't you know it, that doesn't work either. [URL]
I'm using 10.04 beta, but these problems were present on 9.10 too.
I've been running into issues with VLC crashing now and again, particularly when seeking through the current item using the bar (as opposed to Ctrl-Right Arrow/Left Arrow); it may have happened in a few other spots, but that's usually when I'm not at my keyboard. All files are stored locally on my HD, mostly .avi video. For the most part, when I'm using VLC, I've got Firefox and maybe a Nautilus window running as well. CPU use, Memory use, and System load stay pretty well down (and I've never managed to get my swap usage above 120MiB of the 1.2GiB on the Swap partition).
I've tried removing and reinstalling VLC, no dice; about screen lists Ver 1.0.2 Goldeneye. A side effect of this is that, until I restart the system, the screen is unable to be put to sleep at it's timeout; in the notification bar of the top panel, an icon appears and (if the mouse is left there) a little box will appear with text as follows:
Session active, not inhibited, screen idle.
If you can see this text, your display server is broken and you should notify your distributor.

The URL there listed doesn't have any information that seems to be useful, but, I'd presume that VLC does something to prevent the screen turning off while it's playing (a situation where most folks aren't going to be typing or mousing around), which is undone when VLC ends cleanly (and re-opening, then exiting doesn't fix it).
I use Ubuntu 10.04 but I had this problem in 9.10 too.
I have a problem regarding my sound preferences. I have a microphone and I want to use it to make calls. The problem is that when I speak into the microphone when a program like Skype is used, my sound suddenly crashes(The microphone won't take any input nor will I hear any sound from the speakers if I play a video or music. This gets fixed if I restart the computer). This also happens if I go to Sound preferences → Input or Output and edit something there.
If I don't make any of the above, the sound works just fine as I can listen to music and play videos.
I don't know much about computer hardware but here is some info about my sound card:
