Ubuntu Multimedia :: How Can App Work For While / Then Stop Working Within Same Distro
Jan 17, 2010
I have been working with Ubuntu for the last 6 months. Overall, I am all behind linux and open source. However, what I cannot figure out is why [in Ubuntu] or how can an app work for a while, then stop working within the same distro? My iPod was working great with HiPO, Banshee, and Rhythmbox and now, after the latest upgrade, it's not working.

I have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).

I upgraded from wheezy to jessie, but now I just boot to a console. I've gone through and made sure all packages are up to their latest versions, and I've made sure gnome, xorg, and xserver-xorg are reinstalled (during the upgrade they got uninstalled..).
Here's what happens when I run startx manually:
Code: Select allcharlie@asimov:~$ startx
X.Org X Server 1.16.4
Release Date: 2014-12-20
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64 Debian
[Code] ...
Note also that this whole time, gdm3 has been running:
Code: Select allcharlie@asimov:~$ ps ax | grep gdm3
1058 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/sbin/gdm3
3993 tty2 S+ 0:00 grep gdm3
charlie@asimov:~$ sudo service gdm3 status
[Code] .....
I'm not sure why it prints that it's starting gdm3, but it does that every time I run `sudo service gdm3 status'.
Here's a copy of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Every time I try to reproduce a MKV file I get the following error:
No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "h264". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
This was working a few days ago with no issues. I think stop working after the last update (not 100% sure). I have tried to uninstall and installed back again, but didn't work.

I've recently noticed that my IEC958 digital audio output has stopped working. The short version of why I didn't notice this immediately is that I have two simultaneous audio outputs from my system to my speakers and I hadn't realized the IEC958 output wasn't in use. After messing around with a few settings to no avail, I remembered that I'd recently run update manager (this had to be within the last two weeks) and thought this might be the cause.I have just booted to a 10.10 install disc and verified the IEC958 output works fine there.
Unfortunately I'm not sure which of the recent updates could have caused this problem. Before I submit a bug report on launchpad I was hoping anyone here might have a suggestion as to where to look to figure this out.I'd recently seen this thread and this thread which lead me to believe it may have been a recent kernel update. What's my best course of action to determine the problematic update?[edit]In case anyone needs the info, I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on a system with an Intel DH57JG motherboard. Using the HDMI output to a TV, with a separate optical audio cable to my speakers. Also, I've attempted using all of the available digital audio output options in the sound preferences panel and I've also installed gnome-alsamixer and tried enabling/disabling every digital output listed there as well. None of these got the optical output working again.

My sound is not working in my new (10.4 version) of Ubuntu installation. I am a first-time Ubuntu user, but I do have Linux experience with Fedora.
I have spent hours trying anything I could find here and everywhere, so I don't even know where to begin to describe any errors and such. I just want sound, particularly mp3 playing ability. I also have a Fedora installation on this machine (different hard drive) and it works fine, so it's not the hardware.

There seems to be something that has changed in the newest stable Debian - I chose kde4 as my default desktop at installation, and it worked fine. Then I went and changed some options in both /var/run/kdm/kdmrc and /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc, something I have done many times before without problems.
However, when I tried to restart kdm with /etc/init.d/kdm, things didn't come up - no X, no kdm. When I rebooted the machine everything seemed fine, so I thought the problem was solved; but this morning I wanted to change something else - I don't want kdm to remember the last user, and I don't want to see a list of users either. Now dkm and X fail even when I reboot; I also find that /var/run/kdm/kdmrc has disappeared - I am certain I didn't remove it.
The strange thing, when I try /etc/init.d/kdm, I can kdm hanging around all alone in the process list, but no X or greeter. So what is going on - what should I have done instead? And can I repair it? I can of course reinstall the system, but I hate to think that we can't manage better in Linux.

I borked my perfectly good 11.2 install, while replacing a failing hard drive. I reinstalled, and now my sound doesn't work - or not quite. I get the left front channel, nothing else. Battle Duel crashes due to sound errors - or I probably wouldn't care.

Is there any way to get libmp3lame to work with ffmpeg without me having to completely recompile ffmpeg? I have managed to get video capture working (huffyuv didn't work for some reason) and this is my command:ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i hw:0,0 -f x11grab -r 25 -s hd1080 -i :0.0 -vcodec libx264 -vpre lossless_ultrafast -threads 0 -vf 'scale=-1:720' -sameq out.avi
There are so many answers and questions all over the place I can't even tell which package is actually causing the problem... (libmp3lame0? ffmpeg? libavcodec*?)

I have an old old laptop and wanted to try Linux on it. I know next to nothing about Linux and slightly more than nothing about Unix. I made a pen drive with Ubuntu on it but the laptop won't boot from a USB device. So I downloaded several distros. I tried to boot a Ubuntu CD but it won't go past the splash screen. I tried DSL and it won't boot that either. So it's still running Windows 98SE at this point.
I tried several of the distro's under QEMU on my desktop and they seem to work... so the distro's are OK I think. Then I tried burning Knoppix on a DVD and booting the PC. I get the splash screen and it get to the point of saying something like "running dbus" and just hangs forever. I waited 40 minutes and still nothing. Tried booting the PC instead with a distro called "PCLinux Phoenix XFCE" that I burned onto CD. Once again splash screen and then nothing. Finally got a message saying it can't configure video and do I want to do it by hand. Really? Like I can do that. So I booted Win XP again and somehow THAT manages to run both monitors.

I am thinking of using slackware 64 bit with awesome 3 wm. The thought process behind this is that I will learn a lot of how things work, which I am anxious to do. I like speed but knowing what is going on under the hood is paramount to me. I like knowing all my processes and knowing where all my files are and exactly what is on my computer but where I run into trouble is that this might just be too complex for me. I'm not too great at programing so...

I've searched and posted, and tried a buncha stuff, and still no joy.
I am running Mandriva 2010 on a Toshiba Laptop with an HP P1006 Laserjet. Also an Asus eee with Joliecloud.
Both of these were working until two weeks ago. Suddenly I can't print from either of these computers. My wife's MacBook and my son's Windows 7 computer both work with this printer. Neither of my Linux boxes is working.
The queues are enabled, I've reloaded the CUPs dirvers.

I upgraded my ati 9200 with the HD5830. It was brand new from overclockers. On windows 7 it runs great, playing games for hours without any issues at all.But I cannot get it to work with any Distro at all. All I get is garbled graphics from the live cd's, mouse is garbled to.
I have Tried 64bit Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Opensuse/Mepis and 686 version of antiX.I will attach a screenshot of what a screen looks like from the live CD. The card is new and works in win 7 so the card is not faulty, but why can I not use any live CD with it? If I manage to work out the garbled graphics and install a distro its the same. Sometimes if I add "nomodeset" to the boot line I can see the screen perfect. But then trying to install ati drivers boots me to a command line.
EDIT: PC specs

I am trying to start using linux, and am new, so sorry if this is dumb. I started out trying Ubuntu, but that didn't work. After that I had tried Mint, and had several problems besides the Network Connector. Now I'm trying Fedora, but if that doesn't work is there a different Linux distro that will work?

Tried "publish file" in ubuntu one (web interface) to show a file to a friead, it worked great, then i selected stop publishing file, and according to ubuntu one it was not published any more. But my friend can still download the file from the url given, and so can I. Then I tried publishing it again via nautilus, it gave me the same URL, and stop publishing via nautilus, and the URL still works. Now I have the feeling that maybe all files in ubuntu one is accessible to the world by guessing the right URL. How can I know for sure? At least this one file now is world accessible even though ubuntu one says it isn't.
Found one bug in launchpad, which is closed because it supposedly works. Anyone else tried unpublishing files? [URL]

I've tried to do the installs using Unetbootin, LiveUSBcreator, and Startup Disk creator and the Install program from within the distros themselves, regardless of installation method the same problem returns. So I do not think the problem is related to method of installation.
Maybe it's hardware? I've tried a total of four different motherboards, (an MSI, 2 Gigabyte and an Asus) all with updated BIOS, all 4 of which work perfectly fine with normal Linux installations to the HD. I have no troubles running any of the above distros when installed to a hard drive.
The problem comes when I install to a thumb drive. Which thumb drive? Take your pick. I've used Sony, SanDisk, Kingston and a handful of cheaper brands in sizes from 2G up to 16G. The problem always returns regardless of the hardware involved. Therefore I do not think the problem is related to hardware.
I want a fully functioning installation of Linux on a thumbdrive. (I do not simply want a Live CD copied to a thumbdrive.) This will allow me to make changes to the software/settings and have those changes remain after rebooting. I'm able to do this just fine, and everything works perfectly until the third, fourth, or fifth reboot. At this point I enter my password and my password is no longer accepted. Sometimes the screen flickers a little, sometimes it just reloads the prompt. But it doesn't let me in. At this point it's Game Over. All the hard work installing and tailoring the install is down the drain. Yes, I've searched and found threads of this similar problem. Many of them go back to 2005 or 2006. The vast majority of them are people begging for help, receiving a few suggestions, finding no resolution and then the thread just dies. Honestly I've spent many, many hours following outdated advice that has, on occasion, worked, but only temporarily. The problem always returns. Something is seriously screwed up and I can't be alone.
So here I sit with a brand new 4Gb Sandisk that up until last night had a beautifully running Ubuntu 10.10 installation. And yet, voila, my password is now no longer good enough. It simply will not let me log on. I enter it, hit enter, and the log-in screen simply reloads itself.

I've tried ubuntu, kubuntu, fedora and linux mint. all 64 bit versions. I've also tried to suspend through applications like acpitool. But nothing works. When I click on Suspend, the screen goes blank but the computer is still running. The wireless network adaptor gets disabled for a second and then comes back on. All I have to do is press a key and I get the unlock screen prompt. Basically, suspend works like 'Lock Screen'. I have a HP Pavillion laptop. Core 2 Duo @ 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM.

Every time I've tried to install 9.10, it will not run. I get "Grub - " and it just hangs there. I shouldn't have to deal with that. Why can't I just have a happy install like usual? 9.10 / Grub2 is not stable and it needs fixing. Grub2 sucks. It's in beta and no-one tells you that unless you do some looking. I've tried to fix it, can't. Linux really sucks for me right now.

I use Debian 6 as my main distro, installed on partition 1 (sda1) on my laptop. After installing a second distro on sda2 everything still worked fine and both distros show up on the boot up screen. After installing a 3rd distro on sda3; suddenly my cursor (in Debian) is frozen and I can't use either the touch-pad or the 'left and right clickers'. It seems unlikely that this would have anything to do with installing another distro but on the other hand it is a bit of a coincidence...or? The cursor works on the 2nd OS. The 3rd has not yet showed up on the boot screen (I want to do a 'update-grub from within Debian)

I am running a file server on Jaunty. It was a fresh install about a month ago and I have been having problems ever since. I connect external drives to the machine to do nightly backups. Lately, I have been using GParted (Gnome Partition Editor) to format the drives before using them as backups, as I keep a backup for every day of the week.
After using GParted a couple of times, it will stop working and I can't open it or any other application that needs root privileges. I can't use Gnome to mount drives anymore. I have to open Terminal and use the mount command to mount drives. Trying to start gparted or any other application, including nautilus from the Terminal using gksudo or gksu, I get the following error message:
Code:
gksudo nautilus
(nautilus:25353): nautilus-extension-gnome-mount-WARNING **: Cannot connect to system bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.LimitsExceeded : The maximum number of active connections for UID 0 has been reached
(nautilus:25353): nautilus-extension-gnome-mount-WARNING **: Could not initialize hal context
[Code].....
Once the machine is rebooted, everything works fine until I run a few more privileged applications, then the applications stop working again and this whole process starts all over. The only way to fix the problem so far is to reboot the machine, which is completely unacceptable.

I am running 9.10 (Karmic) on a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop with Nvidia graphics. I have installed the -185 driver which has solved most problems. However every so often the system seems to lose track of the mouse button state. The first symptom of this is that all mouse movements on text are treated as if the left button is being held down: mouse movement selects text rather than just moving the graphics cursor. I am using a M$ optical mouse.
I have tried:unplugging and replugging the mouse using Ctl-Alt-F1 to go into a console and Ctl-Alt-F7 to go back to the GUI I am able to shut down all of the open windows normally using the keyboard, but the only way I have so far found to get the GUI working again is to reboot the system.
