When I logout out of gnome, the brightness reaches maximum level. I've tried adding a script to adjust the directory "/sys/class/backlight/intel_ backlight/ brightness" to the rc.local file. I'm not sure if it has to do with my video card but it certainly could be the case since I'm using an experimental package for the Intel graphics card.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a custom .Xmodmap file to change the keyboard layout. The problem is that sometimes the keyboard layout changes back to the default. I have seen the lights on the keyboard blink at times, so I tried unplugging and reconnecting the keyboard and yes - that reset the layout. I can see keyboard removed/detected entries in the logs as well, so I guess my keyboard reconnects sometimes, I don't know why. However the solution from the post earlier (to rename the xmodmap file to ~/.Xmodmap) did not work. So is there another default filename I should use? Or do I have to enable xmodmap to run when a keyboard is plugged in somehow?
The only thing I can think of right now is to monitor /var/log/Xorg.0.log for "Adding input device USB Keyboard" and running xmodmap when that happens... but I'm really hoping for a better solution.If I can't fix the xmodmap problem, maybe I can fix the usb disconnects.I read something about power saving settings for usb. After some digging, I found that those settings are in /sys/bus/usb/devices/.../power/. However, disabling autosuspend for the hub did not seem to work (it was already disabled for the keyboard).
But I found something else in kern.log. Perhaps the keyboard disconnects has something to do with static electricity?

I'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:
1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?
2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.
3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!
4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?
5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.
When increasing or decreasing the screen brightness, Minecraft crashes and to an extent freezes my computer UI. What I mean by to an extent is that I can move the cursor around, but I can't click on anything. I can also run keyboard shortcuts and type, which is how I restore my system by terminating all java processes with pkill.
What causes minecraft to crash and how can I solve it?

I have a Geforce GTX 460 GPU and I recently switched from Ubuntu to Suse 11 and I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers (the same as I had on Ubuntu) In Ubuntu I had configured the xserver to display my desktop on my LCD monitor and my LED TV as clones and everything worked fine When I change the settings in Suse everything works fine until I restart the Xserver. All my settings disappear and everything is back to the standard settings again. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I have root privileges or not, and I have tried saving to etc/X11/xorg.conf., etc/X11/xorg.conf.install, etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup but each time I reboot everything is back to the default settings again. In Ubuntu I just saved the new settings to etc/X11/xorg.conf. and restarted the Xserver and all was fine.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Banshee 1.6.0 under OpenSUSE 11.2. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and whenever Banshee ends one show and switches to another, it resets the sound volume from the value it was set at during the previous podcast.
I couldn't locate anything in the Sound preferences, and Banshee doesn't seem to have anything specific about making the playback sound sync with the system volume.

Since Hal is being deprecated I got rid of it but now I cannot control brightness with the keyboard.Looking at the code on gnome-power-manager, if it doesn't find hal it defaults to xrandr, but I couldn't find a way of controlling brightness with xrandr. Also, I don't see any keybindings on XF86MonBrightness{Down,UP} with gnome-keybindings-properties.I'm loading mactel's nvidia_bl module which creates /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight and from there I can just adjust brightness by editing the corresponding file.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it's called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it "resets" all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned. For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome's panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. How can I get ALSA Mixer to remember my volume settings from last boot or if there's no other option, a way I can make it adjust the levels to a predetermined level automatically on startup. View 3 Replies View Relatedwhen I was entering a sed command, with a back-reference to the scnd set of parenthesis. 2 reset X, or so I though ... I did some experimenting, and lo and behold, I could reproduce the behaviour even on the xdm login screen, when I typed in my sed expression as the name. Not every time, not accurately, but maybe 3 out of 10 times I can reset X by pressing 2 on the numeric row in a quick succession with other keys, and the I at first thought was required to trigger the behavior is not necessary at all. Nothing in the X-log, nothing in ~/.xsession-errors.
I'm annoyed, and as X is quite sizable and spawns a truckload of processes I'm highly reluctant to try and reproduce the behaviour under the control of strace (mind you, since it seems to be "speed" related it maybe wouldn't even occur under strace ;}). I'm running Slack64 13.0 on a Thinkpad R500 with an Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset, can't think of anything else that might be special with this hardware in regards to X.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI added an ext4dev filesystem to my hard drive as /dev/sda3 and mounted at /share with the goal of putting all of my multimedia files on it and sharing it through NFS. I followed this guide: [url]
Of course, this was from lenny (hence the -dev). The partition was fine, and I mounted it numerous times. I also performed a dist-upgrade to squeeze. I shutdown that computer with the usual 'shutdown -h now' and disconnected the AC power cord from it, because I wasn't planning on using that machine for awhile. As far as I could determine, everything was fine before I unplugged it.
Every time that computer is powered off, the clock resets to 1999 because the battery is bad. So I am used to getting the "last mount time is in the future" error.
Three weeks after halting, I powered the computer back on. It was unplugged until this point. I got an error message when it attempted to mount /dev/sda3
I then removed its line from /etc/fstab, rebooted. and tried to check it, but I just keep getting the same error-- even with the '-b 8193' option.
The machine is still using the 2.6.26 kernel from lenny. I am building a new one right now (2.6.30), hoping that the problem is caused by the ext4dev/ext4 module. Otherwise I don't know what to do.

View 9 Replies View RelatedUbuntu, in its most recent version (9.10) has stopped to support certain webcams that it previously supported with just plug-and-play simplicity. After many searches on the web, I could somehow managed to make my old webcam (Logitech QuickCam Traveler) work. Skype couldn't see it, but adding the command bash -c 'export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so; skype' to the launcher, worked the miracle.
Whatever, the image was very dark, and in a new web search I found a solution [url] As stated there, I opened the Terminal and entered:

All is OK, brightness gets up, I can finally see my face (not a great view, but I somehow got away with it) in Skype's test, but I need that change to be PERMANENT, so every time my parents open Skype (it's my parents' computer) they won't have to mess with Terminal (they're 69 and 72 years old, it's their first computer, so I CAN NOT expect them to use Terminal, they just want to open Skype and use it, as they did when they used Windows (until two weeks ago, when I finally convinced them to switch).

Using a VGA connection I can use the buttons on the monitor to control both contrast and brightness. Using dvi there is no control(no contrast control and the brightness button changes the numbers but not the actual brightness!) I cannot find the app that controls the Nvidia GPU
(it should exist as I found it on Zenwalk).
I have a very old monitor that shows too dark colours I would like to increase the brightness via software, in another distro I used gxvattr but in ubuntu doesn't work, I also tried gdcccontrol but my monitor isn't supported. What should I try ?

I'm pretty good in a command line environment although I end up googling syntax a lot b/c of that wonderful memory I have! Anyways..
I am running an older machine: P4P800 ASUS Mobo, P4 2 Ghz, 3G RAM and an ATI Radeon 9000.OS: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Issues: Seems that anything that Compiz has to render the brightness is really low. CairoDock (w/ OpenGL) does not render like it does on other machines that I have, looks like garbage. I've come to the conclusion that I need to get a better video driver (Hope I'm correct here otherwise I've been going the wrong direction for awhile now).
Things I've tried through research around the net: I've attempted installing fglrx(command line style) from several tutorials I've found here and there. Most of them for older versions of Ubuntu and if I'm remembering right there have been a few significant changes lately, which may be causing my issues? Of course I've tried the easy ways: Installed all fglrx/ati/radeon related packages in Synaptics Package Manager
Checked System > Admin. > Additional Drivers before and after package installations
Ati Website - the drivers that they have are for XFree86. I don't think they can run on XOrg - it's a completely different setup? Again, I don't have a great understanding on how the back end of all this works, so bear with em.
I ran: echo options radeon modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf To disable KMS.
Rebooted - Video was much worse I then ran: echo options radeon modeset=1 > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf To re-enable KMS Rebooted again. Everything ran fine but I didn't have my Cairo Dock > which I can deal with, that's not why I'm posting.. Well, that's a good chunk of it - there's more but I don't remember most of it as I've been working at this on and off for weeks. Again, a lot of this was tried upon researching anything and everything I could find on the net - so some of it might sound ridiculous, I was just trying anything that would work!!

- Debian boots normally
- I get the login screen
- Once my credentials entered, I see only the grey foreground of the login screen for a couple of seconds, then a black screen with a prompt for like half a second and then I'm back to the login screen. No error message, nothing.
When booting in recovery mode and use startx, it works fine (it's my setup at the moment). From there, if I start gdm3 (systemctl start gdm.service), I get the black screen with a prompt and I can do nothing, I have to shut down directly by pressing the button.I tried to add Debian-gdm user to the video group (even if I don't use nVidia drivers), to replace gdm by lightdm and even to remove any display manager but the issue is not solved.Here are some outputs:

Since removing gdm didn't change anything, I assume it doesn't have anything to do with it but still.
i've recently reinstalled my computer after the unexpected death of my hard drive. (with the lastest Etch install CD) I have a weird bug that is quite annoying: i cannot change the focus of a window using the left click, I have to use the right click first, and sometimes it doesn't even work. For example, i log in, click on the launch menu and fire a terminal. This works. Let's say i type a few commands, and wants to start mozilla. I left click on the menu, and nothing happens. If i right click the properies menu appears, and then i can use the left click on the menu. It's like that for everything. Let's say i have a terminal and mozilla started. If i'm on mozilla and wants to use the terminal, i have to right click on it, cancel the menu and then i can use the mouse on it. Even atl tab doesn't help: the keyboard gets the focus correctly, but the mouse can't click anything in the window. I've tried replugging the mouse, rebooting, using another mouse, nothing helps. Last thing is reinstall again, and i hope i won't have to.
