Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting DVD's To Work On 8.04?
Nov 11, 2010
I have an older computer running Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS. I installed Ubuntu-restricted-extras and that seemed to get audio support working well. But how to get DVD support working?
I used the "sudo apt-get install libdvdread4" command which I use to get DVD support working in 10.xx but it returned with "E: Couldn't find package libdvdread4". I'm guessing there is a different way to do this in 8.04?
When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:
I can't get flash controls to work. If the video auto-plays, it starts just fine, if not, I'm out of luck. I've tried reinstalling flash through the software center. Even if it autoplays, I can't control volume or pause or anything. I'm at the mercy of whatever is already there.
Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 - all updated as of 1/2/2009 Firefox 3.5.6 On a Lenovo Thinkpad R400
my sound card wont play .ogg files! that means i cant use alot of the sounds that ubuntu comes with and i cant use programs like LMMS and Hydrogen properly.
I have tried to install vlc on my ubuntu 9.04. Initially all went fien, vlc was here and did work. I tiried to uniinstall, then install again, still no cure. what went here wrong? And how to correct all?
next time I tried to run it, nothing happened, no process of vlc could be found and so I tried to start it form cmd with following results:
I just installed ubuntu on top of my windows xp on my laptop. I've got all the files I need to play mp3's i think. I'm using rhythmbox music player and the track play but I get no sound. Is there a better mp3 player out there?
I seem unable to get a movie dvd to work in version 8.04 LTS (with all the latest updates). All I get is a message telling me that there is an error. I've installed the GStreamer plugin but still no go.
I bought touchscreen 0.4 with usb hub to connect to camera port.I at last put it together and into my asus eee 900. I had to swich wires from 1-2-3-4 to 4-3-2-1 since camera connector (USB interface) is switched. I tested all this stuff on usb adapter. When i was testing it (before i put it inside) i checked many times when green light blinks on touch - i belive there is everything all right. So it came to install it on ubuntu.I compiled two or three kernel with modules and built in egalax driver, tried egalax installer and other things, but i still can not get it to work.Tried TKCalc, tried few ways in xorg but it does not work. My xorg tries:
Code: san@eeepc:~$ sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf [sudo] password for san:
My laptop has a S-video TVOUT which I would like to use to show content on my tv. After plunging through a lot of documentation I can't get it to work.
Some config:
root@pluim-nielsen-laptop:~# xrandr --verbose Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 4096 x 4096 LVDS1 connected 1280x800+0+0 (0x43) normal (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm Identifier: 0x41 Timestamp: 6237460 Subpixel: horizontal rgb
I can't seem to get my microphone to work on Ubuntu 10.04. I have a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE PCI sound card. [URL]... Sound card is recognized by System/Preferences/Sound/Hardware as CA0106 Sound Blaster 1 Output / 1 Input Analog Stereo Duplex And sound output works 100% perfectly. I Google'd for hours and did not see anything to fix my microphone. My computer has front headphone and microphone ports and the front headphone port works fine but microphone does not. Also I tried plugging microphone into all the ports on the back into sound card but none worked. Also, I ran alsamixer from terminal and maxed out all volume settings. I wish to get the microphone working so I can play Counter Strike Source with Wine. I am willing to buy another sound card if someone can point out a replacement.
My sound card is an HT Omega Striker, and it worked fine with 9.04. I did a fresh install of 10.04 and I can't get optical/SPDIF/IEC958/whatever to work. I only use the optical out (mostly with Rythmbox, if that matters). I know I had to enable IEC958(?) on 9.04 to get it working, but that didn't work this time around. The sound card is found fine, so this is really pissing me off.
I'm using Wubi to dual boot 9.10 off windows xp. I have been having very good luck figuring things out using this ubuntu forum, which I am more grateful for than any of you could ever imagine, But I have a webcam issue I just can't figure out. Heres my question. I just recently bought a VERY cheap usb webcam from a company named HDE. There doesn't seem to be a specific name or even model number for this webcam, but here is the web page of the webcam I bought, http://www.hdeshop.com/USB-3-LED-PC-...B0015TJNEY.htm The website only provides drivers for windows vista and windows xp, but I figured there might be a chance or possibility that I could force this webcam to work on ubuntu 9.10. I plugged in the webcam and it did show up in skype, but the picture is all green and there is a double of me.
Plus, the actual webcam device will not show up in skype, I can't select the webcam, but regardless it still shows a green double vision image when I test it or do a video call.Skype seems to be the only thing this webcam kind of works with, It will not work with Cheese though and doesn't show an image in gstreamer. I want to mention that when I go to Cheese Preferences there is a webcam device that appears and sayse "USB 2.0 Camera (/dev/video0)" but I can't select it. I'm not sure what to do about this or how to fix it? I've searched around the internet and read the ubuntu documentation on webcams but really haven't had any luck for my specific webcam. I would just like the webcam to be detected by ubuntu 9.10, to work properly in skype, and work in cheese so I can record video's.

I cannot get my sound to work, I've looked around on the threads, but nothing as helped, but that could also be because I'm new at this.. Anyways, the thing I find weird about it is when I started it up, I could hear the startup noise of Ubuntu, but I can't hear anything else.
I've been trying to learn how to record my guitar parts onto Audacity using my Pod XT.I've always used Audacity to do my audio recordings since its much more user friendly than Ardour and just as capable IMO.However, I cannot get Audacity to work with the Pod.I downloaded the "line6-usb-source" using apt-get.Ubuntu seems to recognize the Pod and get a signal just fine (when I go to "Sound Preferences" it allows me to select the Pod XT as input hardware and even shows an incoming signal). When I go to Audacity's preferences,it allows me to select the Pod as the "Recording Device", however when I go to record it gives me an error saying to check the Project Sample Rate.
Does the Pod not output at 44100 Hz?Is there a way to change the sample rate the Pod puts out?Is there another setting in Audacity I need to adjust?I do not want to wine or emulate anything.I feel I shouldn't have to use a specific audio recording software to use a piece of a hardware I paid good money for.
I recently bought a new geforce 220 gt and I'm using ubuntu 10.04 with the proprietary driver. I can't get access to the nvidia-glx program through nvidia-glx-185 because my card needs nvidia-glx-195 and the launchpad repo that supplied that deb has now removed it. My question is would it just be easier to the the open source nouveau driver for nvidia so I can enabled 3d acceleration? Or will I probably run into the same problems trying to get glx working with that driver?
I am on Ubuntu 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04). And I can't get the audio to work, (it wasn't working on 10.04 either) I tried all the different settings in "Sound Preferences".
I tried running ALSA Upgrade Script, it downloaded (sudo bash AlsaUpgrade-1.0.23-2.sh -d) but when I tried to compile (sudo bash AlsaUpgrade-1.0.23-2.sh -c) it said
Code: alsa-driver-1.0.23 make failed Here's the output of aplay -l Code: **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC1200 Analog [ALC1200 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1
I've been trying to get my IMON LCD front panel to work under Ubuntu Maverick for some days now, w/o success so far. `lsusb' identifies the device as
ID 15c2:ffdc SoundGraph Inc. iMON PAD Remote Controller
I've installed lirc and successfully set it up after reading somewhere that I need to load the `imon' driver instead of the `imon_lcd' driver due to some changes in the kernel. So, the remote control works fine! Now I would like to display some info on the LCD. It works under XP, I tested this because I sent the previous LCD back asking for a replacement which didn't work. After installing `lcdproc' and setting up LCDd (almost) nothing happens. When turning on the power, it lights up for a second, then goes to an intermediate state and stays this way. It doesn't even turn off when I shut down Ubuntu, only when I unplug the power cord.
I have followed the multimedia guide here and installed all the content but when I go to play farmville or frontierville it says I need to update flash. I am still new at ubuntu a side note if it is a command line entry I dont mind at all I am learning I like them more and more.
Can't get jack to work. Installed from synaptic (running ubuntu 10.10, 64bit).
WHen ckicking "start" in qjackctl (jack control) I keep getting this message:
19:27:58.615 Patchbay deactivated. 19:27:58.616 Statistics reset. Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory Cannot connect to server socket jack server is not running or cannot be started
I have a Dell Dimension 9200 (DXP061) with a Create eXtreme Music card. The box has a front mic jack and I can't get that to work.In the "Sound Preferences", it shows two possible hardware sources: "Internal Audio" and "SB X-fi".In "Input" I have multiple choices for "Connector" when "Internal Audio analog stereo is selected" ("Microphone 1/Line-In" etc) and for "SB X-Fi Analog Mono" there are none.I have tried every combination in there, plus every combination I can think of in "alsamixer" and the microphone still does not work (I know the microphone itself is OK).
