Ubuntu Multimedia :: IPod Touch / IPhone Application Management In 10.04?
May 2, 2010I am curious if it is possible to manage apps on an iPod Touch with Nautilus or any media-oriented program on Ubuntu 10.04. I have seen several blogs stating that users have been able to manage their apps using Nautilus, but I am unsure if this is true or not.

Dec 25, 2010I tend to buy music on my iPod touch directly, then synchronize it with iTunes later. After goofing around with Rythembox by trying (unsuccessfully) to import some mp3s onto my iPod, I noticed that my recently purchased 'Fame Monster' Lady Gaga album would not synchronize with iTunes, although the music was still playable and indexed correctly on the ipod itself. I also noticed that Rhythembox can't seem to find that album either. It is quite strange.
So I browsed around the file structure on the ipod to try to hunt down these m4a files and found them in a folder called 'Purchases' - they were all there along with a few other recent purchases. These m4a files are different though - they don't seem to have any of the audio tracks' meta-data embedded in the files themselves, that info is instead in associated 'plist' files that are just xml files with all the info about the tracks you'd expect.
When you sync an ipod touch with itunes, it copies your 'on-the-go' generated playlists - so I tried to trick itunes into finding these files by adding my gaga album to a playlist, but sure enough after synching, that playlist simply disappeared. I tried it again, but this time also adding other songs that are not having any problems, and sure enough the playlist was successfully copied to itunes... SANS any of the gaga tracks! This is so weird.
So basically I have these tracks that are paid for, not cheap might I add, that are playable on my ipod touch, but simply refuse to synchronize with itunes. Why not just grab it m4a off the ipod directly? Well thats true, they play on my computer just fine that way, but the files don't have any of the album and track information embedded...

All of the HOT_TO guides I could find involve installing the FFmpeg libraries, which I have done as well as I could have.The problem is that within WinFF, I don't see anything different in the "Convert To ..." drop-down. The Wiki I am reading tells me to select iPod, but this isn't available.What do I need to do to get this to be selectable?

Mar 11, 2011I have just received my iphone 4 16gb, I had already looked into a work around for the whole itunes inside linux issue and instead opted for gtkpod ipod manager which works a treat for my music however I have no way of converting and putting movies on my phone.
Previously I would have used Handbrake to do my video conversions however the new version download on their site doesnt work with 10.10 for some reason and both handbrake and gtk gui are missing when I look in the ubuntu software updates.

Sep 29, 2010I am trying to get video streaming working to my iphone. I have everything working fine using Handbrake to convert to .m4v. I takes a 2.2gig and compresses it down to about 550 megs. Then I am just posting a link to a web page for now for the iphone to open.
It all works but after about 4 - 5 mins of video it needs to buffer. Is there anything I can do when encoding them to help? or is there some kind of video staging server that can be used?

May 3, 2009I have Ubuntu 9.04 and just installed Sound Converter. I am trying to convert a bunch of .ogg files to mp3 to play on my iPod and it's not working so well. In the Sound Converter options I have is set to convert to high quality mp3. I choose the folder that the files are in and after a moment (slow laptop) Sound Converter populates, I hit 'convert' and it shows that the conversion completes in two seconds. All that it did was create the new folder structure of artist/album but there is nothing in there. Not sure what I am missing. I used Sound Converter before and it worked fine.

Jun 17, 2010I've been working on a small program to perform a very specific and useful task of quickly and efficiently converting videos to go on any Apple Ipod or Iphone. This includes both classic and 5th generation Ipods as well. Ibulk is a command-line only program but incredibly easy to use and runs off FFmpeg with AAC functionality. The program comes with a Read Me file which will explain its options and instructions in concise detail. Ibulk converts several videos in its input folder to the desired H.264 or XviD video encoding to its output folder. All videos are created in mp4 format with 160Kbps 48000Hz audio sound quality (highest setting an Ipod can handle) and both video encoders at the highest bitrate an Ipod can handle with the exception of some videos which will be auto-adjusted to meet the Ipod's requirements. Ibulk is written in the native unix/linux language and so it should work on any linux distro.

Aug 15, 2010====== Wireless Access Point & IP Forwarding Mini-Howto ======Use case: we have a pc (laptop, for that matter) with UBUNTU 10.04, and with wired connection to the internet. We want to connect iPod/iPhone or any other device to this laptop, and browse the internet, effectivelly turning our pc/laptop to a WI-FI access point. At this stage, we would not implement any encryption, so our network would be open to anyone.
Oour pc/laptop have 2 working interfaces, wlan0 and eth0. Device eth0 is the wired connection to the internet, device wlan0 is going to be set up as the wireless access point for the iPod/iPhone or similar gadget. We want to forward any IP traffic attached to wlan0 through to eth0. Interface eth0 can either obtain the IP addres from DHCP server on the router, or it can be fixed, it does not matter. But we definitelly need to set fixed IP address to wlan0, and configure dhcp server to listen on this interface.
