Jan 2, 2010I am just learning to write programs in C++, and i got an iPod Touch for christmas. I have jailbroken my iPod so i can run my own programs on it. If i ever get them compiled. After a few hours of searching i have been unable to come up with a working toolchain for ubuntu which compiles for ipod/iphone. Does anyone know where i can get one/find a howto which will help me to get a toolchain working?

Dec 25, 2010I tend to buy music on my iPod touch directly, then synchronize it with iTunes later. After goofing around with Rythembox by trying (unsuccessfully) to import some mp3s onto my iPod, I noticed that my recently purchased 'Fame Monster' Lady Gaga album would not synchronize with iTunes, although the music was still playable and indexed correctly on the ipod itself. I also noticed that Rhythembox can't seem to find that album either. It is quite strange.
So I browsed around the file structure on the ipod to try to hunt down these m4a files and found them in a folder called 'Purchases' - they were all there along with a few other recent purchases. These m4a files are different though - they don't seem to have any of the audio tracks' meta-data embedded in the files themselves, that info is instead in associated 'plist' files that are just xml files with all the info about the tracks you'd expect.
When you sync an ipod touch with itunes, it copies your 'on-the-go' generated playlists - so I tried to trick itunes into finding these files by adding my gaga album to a playlist, but sure enough after synching, that playlist simply disappeared. I tried it again, but this time also adding other songs that are not having any problems, and sure enough the playlist was successfully copied to itunes... SANS any of the gaga tracks! This is so weird.
So basically I have these tracks that are paid for, not cheap might I add, that are playable on my ipod touch, but simply refuse to synchronize with itunes. Why not just grab it m4a off the ipod directly? Well thats true, they play on my computer just fine that way, but the files don't have any of the album and track information embedded...

Jul 28, 2011I recently had to reinstall Ubuntu 11.04 after a bit of careless messing about, and am now unable to mount my Ipod (touch, 3rd generation, maybe?). Previously, only a week ago, I had no troubles mounting it and uploaded all of my music to Banshee with no problems. However, with this most recent reinstallation, I am unable to to do anything with my Ipod. If I plug it in, about 2 seconds later it comes up with an error that I cannot currently remember, but it was along the lines of "cannot mount: timed out."

Jan 13, 2010Its a dell e510 with about a gig of ram. I'm struggling to get my ipod touch working with the gtkpod ipod manager. At this point my ipod shows on my desktop when i connect it via usb. I cannot set up the repository for it in gtkpod because i dont know the location its mounting to. if its mounting at all. so my question is. how can i tell where my ipod is being mounted? I dont have a clue what to look for in the terminal results for "df -a"

Oct 14, 2010These forums won't let me post using an iPad. I can visit this page, no problem, but when I try to add or edit a post, it just doesn't work. The edit page appears, but when I tap in the main textarea field, nothing happens. I expect the virtual keyboard to slide into view and a cursor to appear. This does not happen. In fact, if the keyboard is visible prior to tapping in the text area, then the keyboard slides out of view when the textarea is tapped. It's kind of awkward, having to wait until I get near a desktop machine before I post anything.

Jan 13, 2011I have the latest version of Ubuntu, but I still can't update the music on my ipod with rhythm box.So here is the deal. I put a handful of songs on my ipod using my windows computer at my parents house. Now, when I plug my iphone into my computer, the device shows up, and I am able to add and delete songs in rhythm box. The computer says it's working, and the ipod says its syncing, but once its done syncing, none of the old songs are deleted, and none of the new songs are added. Also, the old songs can't be played anymore. I've looked all around for a solution to this problem but no one can help.

We're running Ubuntu 10.10 and syncing our phones with Rhythmbox 0.13.1. It's painfully slow and skips songs sometimes. For 1500 songs, it's taking up to 5 hours. This is insane. I updated my apt sources and can mount our phones just fine. Syncing slowly is the only issue. I've read a ton of other reads about iPods having this issue as well, but not only were those issues never resolved by I haven't seen one with the actual iPhone.

May 2, 2011I recently installed ubuntu and noticed somewhere that it says "Now you can say ubuntu has iDevice support out of the box". Naturally i tried, resulting in a music library with all the album artwork mixed up. I've tried to sync a couple of times, even added the repository for libimobiledevice and searched for the newest version (said it was already installed). When trying to sync with banshee (or rythmbox), it says syncing on my screen and on my iphone's screen. After syncing, my iphone updates the library, no new music is discovered. I can also add that banshee discovers 100 extra songs on my iphone.

Feb 3, 2010Being tired of my FAT32 partitions on my 80GB Classic, I had it reformatted on a Macintosh to HFS+ (Mac-formatted) at the Apple Store. As per the abundance of threads online, I also had them disable journaling through the Mac's Disk Utility and it appeared it was ready for Ubuntu. I added the UUID to fstab to allow write privileges. Due to the issues I heard with getting it to mount in Banshee on 64-bit Karmic Koala, I used the killall -9 nautilus command and successfully got Banshee to read and mount the iPod. After syncing my iPod, I verified that the content successfully transferred as the disk was now showing a large portion of the drive in use (presumably from the new media). After disconnecting my iPod, from both Banshee and from Nautilus, the iPod presumably safely unmounts and disconnects giving me the okay to unplug it. Whether I unplug it or not, after the OK to Disconnect progress bar completes, the iPod freezes (showing the silver Apple logo). After a while, it seems to turn itself back on, but doesn't show any media on the device. In fact, when I select 'About', it shows 0GB used and 0GB free (strange!).
I've been to the Apple Store about three times to have them reformat it and start over as I keep thinking I'm doing something wrong along the way. The data seems to be ON the iPod as I can play it back through Banshee (and on GTKpod), but the iPod menu itself doesn't seem to recognize anything and I can't access the music through the iPod. I think the iPod database may be corrupted, but I don't understand why this is not corrected with a full restore and why I seem to be able to access the music through Ubuntu.
(P.s. I do NOT want to have to go back to a Windows-formatted, FAT32, iPod.)
(P.p.s. I changed the permissions to my user rather than the 99 or something it was before. Also, whenever I load the iPod in Banshee, it shows all the songs on the iPod.)
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Syncing .ogg With An IPod ?
Jul 27, 2011I know that iDevices do not support OGG, but on Ubuntu 10.10 when I synced my iPod Touch with Banshee, it would convert my music (all .ogg) and then sync it to the iPod without changing the original files. Now I'm on Kubuntu 11.04 (still using Banshee, I prefer it over Amarok) but when I try to sync now I just get errors saying .ogg is not supported. How can I fix this? I'd rather not convert all my music into .mp3 because (a) It goes against my free software values and (b) it would take forever.

I've tried Rhythmbox, Amarok, and iTunes through Wine, but none of them will even acknowledge that a device has been connected. When I connect my iPod while in Rhythmbox, a device called "Unknown Device" pops up for just a second, then disappears. This computer is running only Ubuntu now so I'm pretty desperate to find a way to be able to sync my iPod.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Does Not Recognize IPod Touch?
Jul 24, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu after xp went off its last leg and couldn't start up (I deleted all previous files in the installation). It's a very good program and I have no problem installing new programs
The problem is that it will not recognize any iPod connected to it. ( not only mine but family as well)
Now when I say it doesn't recognize, I mean that programs like Banshee, Rhythmbox, and Hipo fail to recognize that an iPod is connected but my iPod can charge perfectly fine so I know that it isn't an issue with the cord.

Jan 28, 2011I have a 3rd gen 32g ipod touch with the latest firmware and restored to factory default settings. When I plug in the device via USB it will not mount. after plugging in the ipod my dmesg is as follows:

The OS is obviously recognizing the device as an Apple product, but beyond that I don't know.
The device will connect fine with windows machines. I have not tried using it with Wine + itunes as I know that itunes under wine is buggy at best.
