Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio Mutes On Its Own Automatically

Mar 12, 2010

I have a little problem with audio in Jaunty. Specifically every time I launch an application that features audio playback (decibel audio player, firefox on .....) sound output auto-mutes. Getting sound back is as simple as pressing the mute button on my keyboard, but it's still a curious issue. Unfortunately I can't provide many more details about the issue, as I hadn't logged in Ubuntu for a couple of weeks, so when I finally did, it downloaded a bunch of updates at once and any one of those could be responsible for this change in behaviour. I'm posting this here in case it rings any bells.

The problem appears to exhibit varied behaviour for various applications. e.g.:
Firefox: I need to un-mute once and then it appears to work normally, even if I restart the application.
Decibel: Need to un-mute once every time I launch it and if I pause playback for more than a few minutes.
Totem Movie Player: Need to un-mute every time I pause playback for more than a few seconds.

Ubuntu :: Sound Randomly Mutes On Streaming Audio / Video

Aug 19, 2010

I have a gigabyte MB/rig connected to Svideo out on my TV. I have external PC speakers connected to my sound card. For some reason when I go to play video, streaming audio, or streaming video I get no sound. I go into alsamixer via CLI and all is unmuted. I reboot, sound is back. The next day I load boxee, no sound. It's not just boxee when I have no sound. If I close boxee and open vlc and stream online radio, I get no sound either. Reboot, sound is back. No external errors of hardware conflicts either.
Running Ubuntu 10.04, 64bit , kernel 2.6.32-24-generic

Ubuntu Multimedia :: My Sound (apparently) Randomly Mutes?

Jul 22, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 up-to-date in my laptop HP Pavilion dv4-1290br.My sound seems to randomly get muted, after a few hours the laptop is on. I've checked the volumes, I've compiled and installed the very latest ALSA driver, tested it trying to play music and changing the volume in hardware and software. Nothing works. The sound simply gets muted until I reboot.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Sounds Mutes / Unmutes Continuously On ASRock M3A770DE

Aug 22, 2010

My sound keeps going on and off, with some variation but generally about twice a second. I can watch the speaker icon in the system tray with a red x appearing and going away. When I play anything the sound is very broken. I'm running on an ASRock M3A770DE uploaded my ALSA information: [URL]. I've tried a number of things to attempt to correct the problem, but nothing I've tried makes any difference.

This MB does have two separate sound devices, I think. This shows up in YAST/Hardware/Sound with one entry as "ATI Technologies Inc." and the other as "SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)". I've tried disabling each one separately, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. The description of the board says it has "7.1 CH Windows Vista, Premium Level HD Audio (VIA VT1708S Audio Codec)". I don't run Windows except in VMs, so I don't know what happens with this in Windows.

Ubuntu :: Pulseaudio Mutes Speakers - Headphones

Sep 30, 2010

I am using Maverick I had this problem on Lucid as well. With an old version of alsa my headphones mute my laptops speakers when I plug them in. This seems to be the correct behavior.

With a newer alsa, plugging in headphones enables sound in both laptop speakers and headphones. Sometimes plugging in the headphones mutes everything, when I unmute it has the same behavior of playing sound out of both outputs. Changing to Analog Headphones enables playback with only the speaker but is always muted by default, requiring me to go into alsamixer. Removing pulse gets the correct behavior with just alsa, so pulse seems to be the culprit.

Here is my result of the alsa info script. I tried an option suggested in an alsa wikipage to do "snd-hda-intel: enable_msi=1". It did not help.

Code:

Ubuntu :: Alsa Mixer Auto Mutes Speakers On Startup.

Feb 9, 2011

I've got an Acer 7736 and had quite a few issues with no sound after my install of 10.10. After quite a bit of fiddling I managed to get that sorted and I now how have sound. I believe I'm using alsa although pulse also does seem to be on here. The reason I say I believe I'm using alsa is that after startup, I have no sound on speakers unless I unmute it in alsamixer.

As I understand it alsa's supposed to save your settings on logout/shutdown/reboot but this doesn't appear to be the case, and I'm not able to find any asound.conf or the like in the places they're apparently supposed to be.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: 11.1 Updates To Pulse Audio In Gnome Improve Audio Functionality ?

Oct 17, 2010

I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).

I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.

Hence I am looking at Gnome.

I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.

I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:

Code:

So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?

Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Audio Choppy - Can't Play Any Audio With Amarok When Desktop Effects Are Enabled

Jun 7, 2011

to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:

dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.

okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.

i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: M-Audio Delta 66 And ATI HD Audio?

Jun 1, 2010

I am having some issues with getting Ubuntu Studio 10.04 to work correctly on my system. Everything works fine except sound. I have a M-Audio Delta 66 audio interface and my onboard sound is disabled. When I run the command alsaconf I can see the ICE1712 card without issue. However when I run alsamixer the only option it is giving me is my HD sound from my ATI video card. For some reason it seems the ATI card has locked the audio to it with no way to remove it. I have reinstalled the alsa drivers for my card and can only see it through alsaconf. When I tell alsaconf to configure the ICE1712 card it says it configured it properly. When I run the command envy24control it says no ICE1712 cards were found.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Flv Video + Audio To Ogg Audio Only?

Dec 22, 2010

Is there an application that anyone knows about that I can use to convert either an .flv or .ogg file that contains both audio and video to just an audio .ogg file (preferably vorbis+theora) without audacity? I'm fairly certain audacity could accomplish this but it seems like overkill for what I'm trying to do and the computer I'm trying to use does not run it so well.

::EDIT:: I should also mention that I've tried looking on google. I did find downloadhelper extension for firefox which uses ffmpeg to convert the files but I don't see any obvious way to strip the video.

Slackware :: Starting Jedit Fails But Mutes All Sounds Instead

Apr 15, 2011

In 13.1, I added these lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.local
Code:
su - g -c startx
firefox
xrvt
jedit
kwrite

Everything starts except jedit. Yet when I put jedit in at the terminal, it starts normally. But jedit in rc.local does do something, it mutes all sounds for all users. Googling the problem produced only the ideas that $JAVA_HOME or $PATH was the problem. But I don't believe that is so in this case:

Code:
root@darkstar:~# echo $PATH
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/java/bin:/usr/lib/java/jre/bin:/usr/lib/java/bin:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec:/usr/lib/qt/bin:/usr/share/texmf/bin
root@darkstar:~# echo $JAVA_HOME
/usr/lib/java
root@darkstar:~# su g
g@darkstar:/root$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin
g@darkstar:/root$ echo $JAVA_HOME
/usr/lib/java
g@darkstar:/root$

But even if it were, why should the command to start Jedit produce different actions depending on whether it is executed in a script or at a terminal?

Juicer does not support MP3. I read great things about rubyripper, but i dont understand how to make it start automatically.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Bluetooth Headphones - How To Automatically Connect

Sep 10, 2010

I'm running 9.10 Karmic and using Blueman 1.2 with the latest bluez stack. I have a pair of Sony DR-BT100CX bluetooth headphones. I've got them paired and working with my system. When I turn them on I can click on the blueman icon and then select the DR-BT100CX device and then choose to connect the Audio Sink. As soon as I do this my Pulseaudio is redirected and all system output is driven through the headphones. This is great!

My only issue is that I have to select the device (I don't have to re-pair it) when I turn it on. On my Windows system when I turn on the headphones the bluetooth detects them and connects and then audio routes through the headphones. I don't have to click on anything.

Does anybody know how to remove the need to click on the device and add the sync. When I turn my bluetooth mouse on the system picks it up and starts using it, so I know this is possible. I just can't find a simple way to make this happen with the headphones.
