Slackware :: Starting Jedit Fails But Mutes All Sounds Instead
Apr 15, 2011
In 13.1, I added these lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.local
Code:
su - g -c startx
firefox
xrvt
jedit
kwrite
Everything starts except jedit. Yet when I put jedit in at the terminal, it starts normally. But jedit in rc.local does do something, it mutes all sounds for all users. Googling the problem produced only the ideas that $JAVA_HOME or $PATH was the problem. But I don't believe that is so in this case:
Code:
root@darkstar:~# echo $PATH
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/java/bin:/usr/lib/java/jre/bin:/usr/lib/java/bin:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec:/usr/lib/qt/bin:/usr/share/texmf/bin
root@darkstar:~# echo $JAVA_HOME
/usr/lib/java
root@darkstar:~# su g
g@darkstar:/root$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin
g@darkstar:/root$ echo $JAVA_HOME
/usr/lib/java
g@darkstar:/root$
But even if it were, why should the command to start Jedit produce different actions depending on whether it is executed in a script or at a terminal?

when a notification sound is played, skype mutes all other sounds and it's very annoying. There is only one sound device 'PulseAudio server' in skype options so I can't choose another. I use Debian 8

My sound keeps going on and off, with some variation but generally about twice a second. I can watch the speaker icon in the system tray with a red x appearing and going away. When I play anything the sound is very broken. I'm running on an ASRock M3A770DE uploaded my ALSA information: [URL]. I've tried a number of things to attempt to correct the problem, but nothing I've tried makes any difference.
This MB does have two separate sound devices, I think. This shows up in YAST/Hardware/Sound with one entry as "ATI Technologies Inc." and the other as "SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)". I've tried disabling each one separately, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. The description of the board says it has "7.1 CH Windows Vista, Premium Level HD Audio (VIA VT1708S Audio Codec)". I don't run Windows except in VMs, so I don't know what happens with this in Windows.

I was over in the Desktop forum yesterday and apparently 'event sounds' are available for Xfce and are part of the original package, but I've never seen them made available, that is, the switch to turn them on isn't where it is suppose to be, in any Slackware specific package of Xfce.I've used 4.61 that came with Slackware64 13.1, 4.61 from the Salix depository, 4.62 from Mr. Workman, 4.62 from 'current' and recently 4.8 from Mr. Workman. None of these make the 'event sounds' available.

I've lost all sound output. Still works in xp. As root, reran alsaconf, alsamixer and alsactl store. No effect. Run xmms and all is normal except no sound; it plays the file, shows its title, the visual display is active as usual. Is there something I could have done that would mute all sound output?

Sound card: VIA VT1828S (on-board)
Slackware 13.1 (occurs in 32bit and 64bit)
kernel "2.6.33.4 #2 SMP Tue Sep 21 17:28:38 CDT 2010 x86_64"
Video card also has HDMI port + thus has shows as another sound device (ATI HD5670)
Symptom: My audio in Amarok randomly fails.
Ok, it's not exactly random. I'll play a few dozen songs just fine. I'll pause/stop, then try to unpause or play another song later on - no sound.
If I go to the amarok settings, and "configure phenom", it shows "VIA VT1828S" - I click test, and it says the VIA VT1828S has failed.
However, I can still use 'play' from the command line. I still get sound in certain other apps (flash player / firefox).

I know that this not a Slackware question, but since Slackware 13.1 has XFCE 4.6.2 in its standard installation I just ask here. I have a problem with the event sounds in XFCE 4.6.2 on Debian Sid. I already have a thread about this problem here, and couldn't solve it till now. I need to know if this issue is related to Debian or to XFCE, before I ask at the XFCE mailing list. So just one simple question: Has any one of you that is using XFCE got the event sounds to work?

I need to know how to get a complier working for jEdit. To run Java code.I usually use windows to run and compile Java, (although installing compliers is very troublesome for me.) I usually use textpad on windows. However on this laptop I am using I can't get the complier commands to install on the XP version, anyway that's a different matter. What I am trying to do here is get a complier working for Java on jEdit, (using an Ubuntu 10.10 netbook)now it may already be installed with the software, I have looked but cannot find it. (why there aren't installed with the software I don't really understand. I don't have jdk installed as there is a few different version, so I wasn't sure which to go for.

I've been using opensuse for about a week.(although I'm not completely a linux noob) I've been slowly moving more of the stuff I do on windows over to suse. I thought my sound was working fine until I decided to get mp3s running on amarok. I followed a bunch of guides which didn't work. While I was messing around with stuff I noticed a startup noise. I just assumed it didn't have a startup noise. At some point I broke all of my sound except running wine, so I reinstalled.
Now that I've noticed, none of my notification sounds work. Stuff like skype, firefox, and wine still give me sounds.
(If anyone could point me in the direction of a good place to get mp3s working on amarok would be nice as well.)

All sounds work fine on the Windows side, but nothing I have tried so far seem to work with Ubuntu & I have tried many options from many threads.

How do i re size my Slackware partition without deleting it and starting over, I'm new to Slackware and the work i have done i don't feel like doing again.I have set my swap and my actual HDD partition for Slackware to +8048M, I am correct in saying that fdisk can only delete and start fresh, I was a Ubuntu/Fedora user if i could get something like Gparted up that would be great but i don't mind some reading and learning some more terminal based stuff.Planning on working out the kinks and dealing with the learning curve, Love to learn.

I recently installed the Nvidia proprietary drivers and I have a problem starting gdm. Xserver fails, only throwing a warning concerned to xkbcomp, something about ralt having two symbols... but just a warning anyway. Then, after waiting the screen flash between the tty and a black screen a few times;
i'm on the tty, from where I can "startx" without problem. I tried using the nv driver and gdm worked.. so i think it has relation with the nvidia drivers... If I start gdm from the tty, instead of using the startx command, then gdm appears but if I try to log in.. all freezes up.. Here's my xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig: [URL]

lenny gives me either system sounds, or other sounds like flash plugin sounds like videos, cd playback etc., but not both. to hear videos i have to disable system sounds. as soon as i tick enable software sound mixing (esd) in system -> preferences -> sound -> sounds, videos goes. a message saying it could not open the resource as something else is using it comes up when trying to play a cd. sounds like a threading problem in some program. what should i do to get sounds to be equitably shared by all?

I have a little problem with audio in Jaunty. Specifically every time I launch an application that features audio playback (decibel audio player, firefox on .....) sound output auto-mutes. Getting sound back is as simple as pressing the mute button on my keyboard, but it's still a curious issue. Unfortunately I can't provide many more details about the issue, as I hadn't logged in Ubuntu for a couple of weeks, so when I finally did, it downloaded a bunch of updates at once and any one of those could be responsible for this change in behaviour. I'm posting this here in case it rings any bells.
The problem appears to exhibit varied behaviour for various applications. e.g.:
Firefox: I need to un-mute once and then it appears to work normally, even if I restart the application.
Decibel: Need to un-mute once every time I launch it and if I pause playback for more than a few minutes.
Totem Movie Player: Need to un-mute every time I pause playback for more than a few seconds.

I am using Maverick I had this problem on Lucid as well. With an old version of alsa my headphones mute my laptops speakers when I plug them in. This seems to be the correct behavior.
With a newer alsa, plugging in headphones enables sound in both laptop speakers and headphones. Sometimes plugging in the headphones mutes everything, when I unmute it has the same behavior of playing sound out of both outputs. Changing to Analog Headphones enables playback with only the speaker but is always muted by default, requiring me to go into alsamixer. Removing pulse gets the correct behavior with just alsa, so pulse seems to be the culprit.
Here is my result of the alsa info script. I tried an option suggested in an alsa wikipage to do "snd-hda-intel: enable_msi=1". It did not help.
Code:

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 up-to-date in my laptop HP Pavilion dv4-1290br.My sound seems to randomly get muted, after a few hours the laptop is on. I've checked the volumes, I've compiled and installed the very latest ALSA driver, tested it trying to play music and changing the volume in hardware and software. Nothing works. The sound simply gets muted until I reboot.

I have a gigabyte MB/rig connected to Svideo out on my TV. I have external PC speakers connected to my sound card. For some reason when I go to play video, streaming audio, or streaming video I get no sound. I go into alsamixer via CLI and all is unmuted. I reboot, sound is back. The next day I load boxee, no sound. It's not just boxee when I have no sound. If I close boxee and open vlc and stream online radio, I get no sound either. Reboot, sound is back. No external errors of hardware conflicts either.
Running Ubuntu 10.04, 64bit , kernel 2.6.32-24-generic

I've got an Acer 7736 and had quite a few issues with no sound after my install of 10.10. After quite a bit of fiddling I managed to get that sorted and I now how have sound. I believe I'm using alsa although pulse also does seem to be on here. The reason I say I believe I'm using alsa is that after startup, I have no sound on speakers unless I unmute it in alsamixer.
As I understand it alsa's supposed to save your settings on logout/shutdown/reboot but this doesn't appear to be the case, and I'm not able to find any asound.conf or the like in the places they're apparently supposed to be.

I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.

I ran installpkg on seamonkey 2.0.4, on Slackware 13.0, and it appeared to install OK. I can run /usr/bin/seamonkey -version and I get the 2.0.4 version number. However, when I run it without arguments, no windows get opened, and there are no errors that I have located (eg messages, syslog). This is probably something real obvious, but I'm drawing a blank. BTW, firefox runs OK.

I have a 16GB flash drive with grub2 installed on it so I can boot Linux iso's in place of burning 200 CD's. I looked at the isolinux.cfg file and came up with this:
Code:
menuentry "Slackware 13.1 64bit" {
linux /boot/slackware/13.1/64-bit/bzImage initrd=/boot/slackware/13.1/64-bit/initrd.img load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 rw SLACK_KERNEL=huge.s root=/dev/ram0
}
However the kernel panics because it cannot mount the root file system. It gives me the options of using my partitions. What should I put for the root parameter?

I'm having trouble starting non-kde window managers. From the start-up command line, I get an error message about the XServer when typing "fluxbox" in as a command. However, when I put fluxbox in as a command in konsole, it gives an error message (which makes sense because I was using kde). I also can't start xfce as it is not a recognized command.

My Slackware64 13.1 system is running off a notebook that does not leave the desk often so I stay connected via a ethernet cable. Recently I set up the wireless configuration for my home network and while I would like to have it so that it automatically goes to the wireless interface when the wired is down, I do not think that is possible without wicd or some other network manager. Anyway, whenever I start up Slackware both the wired and wireless interfaces activate and acquire their own IP addresses. What I would like is for the wireless configuration to remain dormant so that all I would have to do is issue "ifconfig wlan0 up" to turn on the wireless interface/connection. Is this possible? As it stands I have to manually issue the "ifconfig wlan0 down" to turn it off once the system boots up and I log in.

I'm trying to configure gpsd 2.96 to start automatically from udev rule on a Slack 13.37 box.1. I've compiled and installed gpsd from sources and made sure it starts manually.2. I've copied the /lib/udev/gpsd.hotplug and /lib/udev/gpsd.hotplug.wrapper scripts in their places from the source tree and made them executable.3. I've copied the gpsd.rules file from sources into /etc/udev/rules.d4. I renamed it 99-persistent-gpsd.rules to run late in the bootup process.5. I've copied the /etc/default/gpsd file from sources and made sure it has the right settings inside.
Now, for the results. If I plug the gps usb dongle in while the system runs, it starts gpsd if it is not started, and it connects to it just as it should. But if I start the system with the dongle in, gpsd doesn't get started during boot. I can't find any relevant message in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages for boot time. There is stuff there from when I plug the dongle in while the system is running though. It's like udev ignores the rules for it at boot time.Is there something in the Slackware boot scripts that would prevent running those scriptssd.hotplug.wrapper which in turn runs /lib/udev/gpsd.hotplug which is a Python script)? Here is the contents of 99-persistent-gpsd.rules (ignore the comments referring to Debian, it was meant for a Debian box). My usb gps adapter is the first one - the Prolific chipset one:
Code:
# udev rules for gpsd
# $Id: gpsd.rules 5861 2009-08-03 13:41:01Z bzed $
