Ubuntu Multimedia :: Any Advantage To Realtime Kernel
Jan 10, 2010
Just got Studio 9.10 running and the RT kernel installed. I have a Prescott P4 3.2ghz (hyperthreading) and i encountered what looks like a common freeze problem. I am guessing my cpu will not be supported in the RT kernel since it is pretty old now.I added nosmp acpi=off during boot at the Grub2 menu and it booted fine and I was able to capture some video great.
My questions is, if I remove the smp support by using the nosmp option, do I still benefit from the RT kernel or would I do just as well with the generic kernel I have installed?Eventually I will upgrade do a new system board and processor but for now I just got some life back in this one by switching to Linux

My main computer (HP Pavilion 510n) only allows 512 meg ram.I've never built a kernel for Slackware.I'm running 13.0 :2.6.29.6 #1 Mon Dec 7 16:34:06 CST 2009 i686 Intel(R) Celeron(TM)CPU 1200MHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux.Would there be any advantage to build a new kernel for 512 megs ram maximum? I do basic stuff with this: browse, email, video clips, music.

i need to use the realtime kernel because i use jack audio connection kit so i tried to install the realtime kernel from the install/remove software program. I've found 2 kernels : Kernel-trace and kernel-rt i tried both of 'em but i cannot boot up suse. The first one gets to 3/4 of the loading bar , i hear the welcome sound and then it won't do anything else. The second won't do anything, black screen.

I succeeded with the 2.6.31.12-rt20 on the Slackware 64 13.0.Kernel config seems fine, i use PAM.I can launch jackd as user with the realtime flag, BUT...Using top and htop, i can see that /etc/security/limits.conf or /etc/security/limits.d/limits.conf or wherever i put this file, priorities and nice are not set.Of course i added this to this file :
@audio - rtprio 99
@audio - nice -10
@audio - memlock 500000

I am trying to install vmware server on CentOS: In vmware installation guide it says before intalling:
Before you begin, read the following notes and make adjustments to your host system: The realtime clock function must be compiled in your Linux kernel. The parallel port PCstyle hardware option (CONFIG_PARPORT_PC) must be built and loaded as a kernel module (that is, it must be set to m when the kernel is compiled).

I have investigated loads and loads of options and haven't really yet come across what I need.
I wish to stream the microphone input from a PC using Lucid to another PC also using Lucid on the same network. I don't care about the quality, however, latency is really important. I hope to use it to monitor the cries of my baby daughter, so the lower the latency the better.
I have tired various options:
- FFserver and FFmpeg - latency of over 30 seconds
- VLC - couldn't get it to work with my mic and maxes out the CPU
- ssh server 'cat /dev/dsp > /dev/dsp' - latency of around 5 seconds by audio keeps breaking up with huge delays
- icecast2 and darkice - latency of around 7 seconds but no audio breakups
I've been reading on maybe using PulseAudio to stream the input, but I am not sure if it will work or not...
how to get near real-time streaming audio? As I said, it is the realtime, not the quality that is important...

is there a realtime or low-latency kernel in a repository somewhere for OpenSUSE 11.4? I know I can just compile a rt kernel, but that's a bit tedious and I'd like to avoid it if possible.

I can be granted permission, and I'm in the proper groups, but pulseaudio tells me I can't get permission.. I wanted to see if anybody else had this problem / knew of a solution / isolate whether it is a pulseaudio, policykit, whatever problem, before I post a bug upstream.
Code:
[Sun 07:25 AM] ~ $ rpm -qi pulseaudio | awk '/Version|Release/ {print $1$2$3}'
Version:0.9.13
Release:3.4
[Sun 07:25 AM] ~ $ groups

I have seen a lot of posts about Zeitgeist and have done a fair bit of googling but I can't figure out how it is used.
For instance, I see docky helpers for Zeitgeist. What do they do? How do I take advantage of them? Is there integration with nautilus elementary? If so how to take advantage of this?
I know ir's running:
I needs a dummies overview please. I understand that it keeps track of what and when various things were accessed but what do with this? How do I use it?

Modern systems seem to be EFI based, and while there's a specific version of lilo that works with it, i can't seem to find any mention of a efi varient of grub (edit - on modern debian derivative systems there's grub-efi. Most references to it seem to be about various bugs in/for it tho) . In general, how well is EFI supported on linux?In addition, apparently windows 7 uses EFI to enable faster boot - 12 seconds or so with some systems. While a properly tweaked linux system could probably come close, are there any enhancements to the linux booting procedure that take advantage of EFI?

I just installed Maverick Studio on a new hard drive, and am using an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE GPU. If I boot into the 2.6.35-22-generic kernel, everything runs fine, but if I try to boot into either the 2.6.35-20-Low Latency, or 2.6.33-29-Realtime kernels (installed from Synaptic), the computer boots straight to a command prompt instead of the desktop. Does anybody know what causes this? I need to be able to use one of these kernels for doing music production.

I am striving to setup OSSEC to monitor some specific files for realtime changes! Is this possible? I can't really find a lot of info from their Documentation
Some Examples:
/etc/myfile.txt is deleted. I need this to be reported.
/etc/myfile.txt is created again so I need this to be reported again!
This has to happen instantly though, because the file might be deleted and created again many times in a short period of time.. Another one...
/etc/passwd is touched (accessed) even if there is no changes! Can this be reported as well?

I posted this in the Networking section, but should probably be over here. Couldn't move it. I have a transparent proxy in place. I have Webmin installed on the server. Is there an app that can monitor bandwidth in real time? Also run reports? I have SARG installed, but seems to only monitor HTTP traffic, I need to monitor all traffic. I have a bridged connection, but monitoring the outside interface is fine too.

This might be a very stupid questions, but I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any antivirus software for Linux?I know that it normally is not something that is needed, but in the company where I work they have a policy saying that every OS must have a realtime anti virus program installed on the pc's with automatic updates.

I was listening to some Chopin today and I thought how cool it would be if there would be a way to put the sound output of Amarok (or anything else, maybe line-in or microphone) through some effects that would make it sound like being read from a vintage vinyl disk. Or when listening atmospheric folk songs about forests, it would be really cool to add some echo or reverberation, so it would sound like a large forest, ooor... But you get the idea. Is there any nice way of putting Amarok's sound through JACK, and from then on through a sound effector?

I have been using parts of the MRG (kernel-rt, qpid[dc]) package for some time; thanks to Johnny Hughes (hughesjr) for providing the initial binaries. Recently, I discovered that CERN builds MRG for their ScientificLinux distribution, which is a derivative of CentOS.
You can view the package list from their repoview or browse all the packages they support here. I have found these packages to be compatible w/ CentOS. Perhaps something can be done to leverage this work to make MRG available as part of CentOS?It's straight forward to setup a .repo file to pull MRG directly via yum, including updates.
