when I reformat ubuntu, I use AptonCD to save packages and then restore them without downloading anything over again. what I want to know is: I have the 32 bits ubuntu installed and then I downloaded the 64 bits version. If i reformat to the 64 bits one, would the DVD saved aptoncd packages from the 32 bits work on the 64 bits installation?

I'm quite new to linux and I recently (and courageously) upgraded the computer of my work from opensuse 11.0 32bits to opensuse 11.2 64bits.
Well, everything would be quite fine except that I still have some softwares 32 bits that have the 64 bits version available. I know that because, using YaST, I can see by the Installed software section that there are 'choices' of versions for some programs; these versions are 'i586' and 'x86_64', and many of them have the i586 version installed.
So, I wonder if there is some type of auto upgrade all programs which are i586 and have the matching x86_64 avaliable...

About 7 years ago I setup a Redhat system with 8 serial terminals and 8 serial printers, this is still running but I need to get another system running so the original can be taken down for maintenance. The printers are ancient Newbury data dot matrix wide carriage with 7 data bits receive 8 data bits transmit Xon/Xoff flow control. Now I remember setting the transmit and receive data bits as above but after 7 years can't remember where.

I have 2 HDD, one is 500 GB, the other is 70 GB, 1.5 GB RAM and a 256 MB nVidia graphics card.In one HDD I have Win XP 32 bits, the other one is empty, and I want to install Ubuntu, so I downloaded the .iso 32 bits from the official page, burned it with the recommended software, no problems (I used the slowest speed).I reboot the computer, BIOS > Boot from CD, and Ubuntu screen appears (sorta purple with black).About 10 mins pass by, it's still "loading" or something, and, suddenly, it just freezes, out of the nowhere. Here's a short vid of what happens:

I updated a firmware of my wifi router (small black box with antenna). The router is managed via web browser at address 192.168.1.100. I opened Mozilla Firefox connected to the router, but a 'home.asp' application - an interface one can to set up a configuration - running on the router didn't work properly. When I tried to change some settings, and eg. clicked a confirmation button nothing happened. I solved the problem staring Windows and making a connection using IE - this time that home.asp application did OK. The question is what may caused problems? A bug in this app or in general *.asp applications don't communicate well with browsers other than IE or simply they don't 'like' Linux?

Just got Studio 9.10 running and the RT kernel installed. I have a Prescott P4 3.2ghz (hyperthreading) and i encountered what looks like a common freeze problem. I am guessing my cpu will not be supported in the RT kernel since it is pretty old now.I added nosmp acpi=off during boot at the Grub2 menu and it booted fine and I was able to capture some video great.
My questions is, if I remove the smp support by using the nosmp option, do I still benefit from the RT kernel or would I do just as well with the generic kernel I have installed?Eventually I will upgrade do a new system board and processor but for now I just got some life back in this one by switching to Linux

I have seen a lot of posts about Zeitgeist and have done a fair bit of googling but I can't figure out how it is used.
For instance, I see docky helpers for Zeitgeist. What do they do? How do I take advantage of them? Is there integration with nautilus elementary? If so how to take advantage of this?
I know ir's running:
I needs a dummies overview please. I understand that it keeps track of what and when various things were accessed but what do with this? How do I use it?

Modern systems seem to be EFI based, and while there's a specific version of lilo that works with it, i can't seem to find any mention of a efi varient of grub (edit - on modern debian derivative systems there's grub-efi. Most references to it seem to be about various bugs in/for it tho) . In general, how well is EFI supported on linux? In addition, apparently windows 7 uses EFI to enable faster boot - 12 seconds or so with some systems. While a properly tweaked linux system could probably come close, are there any enhancements to the linux booting procedure that take advantage of EFI?

I have a 6TB external eSata bay (Lacie BigQuadra). I made a GPT table with only one big ext4 partition. All was ok. I resized the ext4 partition and I created a 1TB NTFS partition. I can use it on Kubuntu but Windows 7 tell me the partition is not formated. When I go back to Kubuntu, parted tell me that the secondary GPT table is not at the end of the disk and tell me it's probably an other OS that thinks the disk is smaller that its real size. It seems Windows 7 thinks the disk size is 2 TB (and modify automaticaly the GPT table and create a secondary GPT table on the middle of the disk).
What can I do to make my NTFS partition visible in Windows 7? What can I do to prevent Windows 7 to move the secondary partition table on the middle of the disk and to modify the primary GPT table ?

Ubuntu in Windows 7 (64 bits) File system installed using Wubi I got Ubuntu 10.04 LTS intalled using Wubi. That means Ubuntu resides inside Windows file / folder system. It also means Ubuntu does not have its own partition. Here is what I found out:
1) It cannot detect wireless network unlike Win 7 on this same laptop. However, when I plug in ethernet cable, it was able to detect it. Is there a fix this problem?
2) I cannot see Windows folders. How do access windows folder from Ubuntu side and vice versa?
3) I forgot to set the disk space for Ubuntu during install and I think the default is 17 GB.Would this cause me problems? If so, what do I need to do? How do I expand the disk space for Ubuntu?

But first im just wondering what the advantages are people have seen who have used both 32/64bit linux. Speed? Smoothness? And also what are major disadvantages such as compatibility, configuration, etc.
