How do I troubleshoot my right Alt key to function.
Using Debian GNU/Linux Lenny 5.0.3 with a Gnome Desktop. My keyboard is A4tech KBS-720.
System->Preference->Keyboard Layout is set up to USA alternative international
Other than that, I'm not sure where to configure such. Using the keyboard on another computer, all keys works.

If you do, please let me know what sound card you're using. I'm beginning to think its the driver. All kinds of weirdness in early bootspace and also alsactl init fails with a missing init directory for the device.
I'm on a Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy SE and it's completely non-functional. I've seen bugs reported with the audigy LS but never the SE.

I tried to run the XBMC live disc but could not fully boot. Each time I could only get to a command prompt after the XBMC splash screen with spinning circle. So I thought, "Maybe because my computer is sort of old (Pentium 4, 2.26 Ghz, 512 RAM) it doesn't like the XBMC Live disc. It will probably work if I install to the HDD." I installed it only to get the same result, XBMC splash screen then loading of command prompt. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is the computer compatible?

I use openSUSE 11.4 64 bits, KDE, FireFox 5.0 for browser.Graphics card : nVidia GeForce 9500 GT.
However, when I want to see embedded movies, e.g. in my newspaper, or looking for a hotel, either I get the message : you have no flash plug-in installed, or I get a black screen with a cross in it.
Before that I tried to :
Code:
sudo zypper rm pullin-flash-player flash-player nspluginwrapper
followed by :
Code:
sudo cp ~/Downloads/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib64/browser-plugins/
I also followed the links indicated by FireFox for the missing plug-in which eventually resulted in :

I already posted this message on another thread but I'd like to start a new thread with it now, and add a few more details. My son and I are having trouble getting the graphics card to work properly in his computer. The resolution is good, but the graphics card is not fully functioning. He works on animation and graphics of several kinds, and the graphics programs cannot run without a fully functioning graphics card.
The computer will not run Blender and other graphics programs. Nor will it even allow for the "normal" "Visual Effects" in the "Appearance Preferences." (It comes up with the error: "Desktop effects could not be enabled," after it tries to find the driver.) The system is:
Graphics Card: nVidia G92, GeForce 8800 GT
System: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, 2.6.31-17-generic, 4.4.1 (x86_64-linux-gnu)
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ (3 Gigs RAM)
We know the graphics card works because it works in Windows. (We set up the computer to boot off of either of two hard drives -- either in Windows XP or Ubuntu 9.10, karmic.) Neither my son nor I understand much of the terminology on your forums, although I have been using Ubuntu for some years and have read quite a bit. (I also have the "Beginning Ubuntu Linux" book.) I love Ubuntu, but sometimes I just cannot figure out how to get some things running. We have tried many different ways of installing the drivers and setting up the xorg.conf file. We have followed the instructions on this and other threads. We also installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-64-190.53-pkg2.run, as well as 173 and 185. The screen will only work at a proper resolution when we set the "Driver" to "nv" in the xorg.conf file. The screen goes completely blank and dead if we set the "Driver" to "nvidia." Then we need to reboot in safe mode and edit the xorg.conf file with VIM.

Since the update to Squeeze, I've lost the ability to paste text by pressing both right and left mouse buttons. I'm using an EeePC, so I have no middle (scroll) button. I use this a lot, because I copy-and-paste IPA pronunciations of words onto worksheets I use at the school I work for*. *input the IPA symbols myself aside from choosing them from lists of symbols in LibreOffice excruciating when you've got to do it every day...

New eeePC 1015PEM netbook, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD. Came with Win 7 Starter; I retained this and installed openSUSE 11.3 alongside. Everything works well in Win 7 Most things also work well in oS 11.3, but there is a knotty problem with audio from the built-in speakers. Headphones are OK, but the speakers don't work reliably. Others have reported this on similar machines, and a number of "fixes" have been proposed in a wide range of forums, but so far I haven't found any that work.
I've actually installed oS 11.3 twice. After the first install I had no speaker sound at all, but after a day or two fiddling around it started to work of its own accord for no reason I could point to. For unrelated reasons (a silly mistake by me in Win 7) I then had to re-install oS 11.3 from scratch. This time the speaker sound worked after install, but then it dropped out again a couple of days later. Headphone audio has remained OK throughout.
I'm aware of and have applied the acpi_osi=Linux kernel parameter to enable the Fn keys on the machine (including sound volume and mute/unmute), so it's not that. I've combed the forums and Google extensively for other suggestions, and have tried them - including installing alsamixergui. I've also installed a properly matched ALSA KMP which changed some of the alsamixer controls but didn't cure the problem. Since it all works very well in Win7 and works sometimes in oS 11.3, I conclude that the problem is not with hardware but is something in software.

I recently did an upgrade to ubunut 10.04. I have a nikon d70 that I plugged into the computer to download the pictures off of but to my surprise my computer no longer sees the camera. I did a search and found a few threads about USB cameras and skype but nothing about this issue. Is there anyone else having this problem?
Is there a fix for it? So far everything has been working OK with UBUNTU 10.04 I would hate to go back to windows xp only because I am not able to download the pictures from my camera.

Can I run this camera:
Quote:

as something other than a UVC driven camera?
It appears that UVC in 640x480 format is only available at 15 fps. I need to record at fps=30. So I can splice into existing video.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
##Turn on webcam and save video and audio output to file.
# check if there is no command line argument

I deleted files from my camera (SDHC via USB) which I now want to copy back but I don't know how.
The camera is mounted in ~/.gvfs and the target folder is owned by my user with read/execute permissions. Couldn't change the folders permission.
I tried to mount the camera using 'gksu nautilus', but the camera didn't show up in the side panel. Unfortunately I don't know how to mount the camera from the command line, so I'm stuck.
PS: the only available card reader doesn't recognize SDHC cards, so that's not an option. And no, I won't boot Windows for that task.

My local priest has asked me if I can use my computer skills to stream church services live for people who can't make it to church.I said, sure thing! I thought it would be simple, but the deeper I look into it, the more lost I have become! Here's the tech requirements:
- A camera with good optical zoom and focused on the altar (the camera will be stationed at an unobtrusive point at the back of the church on the choir balcony)
- Everything must be wireless (power is available on choir balcony to power the camera).
- Sound should be synchronised perfectly with the video (have access to the church PA system - located behind altar)
- the internet connection should be able to upload the stream to a virtual server (i.e. with root access) that's accessible to the web with ease. What upload speed would I need? Would 256k be enough? HD video is not required - ..... quality would be great. We can upgrade to HD at a later point in time!
- What bandwidth requirement would my server need if say 1000 users were connected? Seeing as they would most likely be locals, would just one stream be sent to the local exchange and that exchange would send out the stream to the 1,000 users, or would each user have to have a dedicated connection to the server?
- Say I bought a camcorder with HDMI output, what kind of processing power would I need to convert this to compressed video? (I've got an old Pentium 4 and an AMD64 2.0GHz lying idle in my bedroom and it would be great to make use of 'em instead of chucking 'em on the skip)
- I'd like all this to be done so that HTML5 browsers can access the video, resorting to flash if necessary
- I'd also like to be able to power down all the hardware with ease: i.e. set a timer. I'm sure ubuntu can do this with ease? What about configuring the camera to zoom in every time it is powered on? Can linux control the zoom on a camcorder?
- Am I totally nuts?

I've been having a fit with Ubuntu (even tried updating to the new version). I have a USB camera (1.3mp- 1024x768 ) that I need to observe and capture images with (microphotography). I've downloaded and installed multiple packages, but have not found any way to change the default resolutions for V4l2. The resolution closest to what I need is 1024x816, but the video is torn and unusable. One program, Kamoso, worked fine in 640x480 mode, but as soon as I upgraded to Ubuntu 10, it went to the higher resolution (1024x816) which doesn't work right.
Is there some way to force v4l2 into a 1024x768 mode? The camera is a Tucsen 1.3mp microscope camera. I've emailed the company for more information and to see if they would email me the software/drivers (I lost the driver disk in a fire), but nothing so far from them.
The programs I've installed and tried: Camorama, Kamoso, Xsane, Cheese, VLC media player, v4l2ctrl, v4l2ucp, v4lctl, v4l-info. Camorama doesn't work, Kamoso- you couldn't change resolutions (ditto for Xsane), Cheese - I can change resolutions, but they have these crazy values that don't work, VLC media I cannot change either. I'm supposed to be able to use v4l2ucp to change settings, but I don't get the screen that the preview for the program (in Ubuntu Software) showed.

who has a hitachi dvd cam. makes movies records them to dvd's. but the permissions of the disk do not allow for anybody to open them?
I can gksu nautilus to find the permissions of the disk are set to "-1 - user #-1"
what is this about and how do i fix it so that i can read/copy/do anything with the disk without root permission?
the owner permissions are set by the camera, i'm assuming, because the actual disk creation has nothing to do with ubuntu at all.

This appears to be a frequently-asked question, but unfortunately all the answers I have been able to find are either outdated or refer to software I am not using. [Edit: this is Lucid upgraded from Karmic on a Dell Dimension 4550] If I plug in my antique little Kodak EZ-200, it appears to be recognised; that is, /var/log/messages says:

How do I find out what module has claimed the camera, and permanently remove it or prevent it from ever doing so again? Is there some method of telling gphoto2 (or any other camera-handling program) to stamp all over anything else that has laid claim to a device and brute-force its way?

I have a Panasonic DVCPRO HD camera with a Firewire output. I'd like to take the video footage off of the camera and put it into my Ubuntu (Studio, 10.04) machine. Unfortunately, neither my Ubuntu machine nor the camera seem to recognize a connection with each other.
I've only used this camera like this with Mac OSX, in which I press a button a couple folders pop up with everything in them which I can then digitize in Final Cut Pro. I'd prefer being able to use my Ubuntu setup with Open Source Software to view and edit this footage.
how to get ubuntu and this camera to talk to each other and play nice?

I am a Ubuntu newbie (installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS last week) with a camera problem. My Canon SD300 won't automount when I attach it by usb cable. It is visible to F-Spot and I can import pictures, it just doesn't automount. I saw other posts where no usb automounts were occurring. Not my problem. Memory sticks and external hard drives automount just fine. Only the camera is a problem child.
