Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 VUmeter Reads Ok But Still No Audio
Aug 22, 2010
I used to have audio working. Now it's silence while the vumeter reads as if all streams are outputting okay. I have a Radeon HD 4670 with audio out the HDMI as well as audio out the motherboard simultaneously. This all works in windows 7 and used to work in ubuntu until some point, not exactly sure when, it all went silent. Also, fyi, I started with a clean 9.10 and upgraded to 10.04.

Maybe a simple question, im not sure what is running behind the curtain.
banshee guayadeque gnomemusicbrowser rhythmbox
are doing the same thing with my 14k mp3 library. They all dupe exactly the same files with every full rescan of the existing music library. So i guess they all use a gnome system part for this job and there is a bug inside this part. I want to file a bug against this part but don't know the name.
It isn't that I don't get sound. It just won't play. If I click a file, then click play it quickly goes through an amount of songs. Too quick to give a good number. For example, if I have 100 songs on my library, I want to play one. Obviously I click play and such to make it play but instead of playing it acts as if it can not read the file (even though all my songs are in the library). Got any help/tips/whatevers?
I want to listen to this audio file: [URL] but my real player 11.0.0.4028 gold desn play it, it says that there is a codec 28_8 missing, I go to relaplayer page, download the last release available for linux systems, but the message is the same : audio codec missing and doesn't play the audio.
I havev tried to play the audio with smplayer (not luck), vlc can play the audio but the pause button doesn't work so I have to listen the entire audio all the time I stop it playing. Is there any audio player capable od reproducing in the proper way this audio in ubuntu? No one of my video players totem, smplayer, realplayer or vlc are capable of playing this video: [URL]
I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).
I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.
Hence I am looking at Gnome.
I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.
I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:
Code:
So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?
Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.
I am having some issues with getting Ubuntu Studio 10.04 to work correctly on my system. Everything works fine except sound. I have a M-Audio Delta 66 audio interface and my onboard sound is disabled. When I run the command alsaconf I can see the ICE1712 card without issue. However when I run alsamixer the only option it is giving me is my HD sound from my ATI video card. For some reason it seems the ATI card has locked the audio to it with no way to remove it. I have reinstalled the alsa drivers for my card and can only see it through alsaconf. When I tell alsaconf to configure the ICE1712 card it says it configured it properly. When I run the command envy24control it says no ICE1712 cards were found.
Is there an application that anyone knows about that I can use to convert either an .flv or .ogg file that contains both audio and video to just an audio .ogg file (preferably vorbis+theora) without audacity? I'm fairly certain audacity could accomplish this but it seems like overkill for what I'm trying to do and the computer I'm trying to use does not run it so well.
::EDIT:: I should also mention that I've tried looking on google. I did find downloadhelper extension for firefox which uses ffmpeg to convert the files but I don't see any obvious way to strip the video.
I"m running an online radio station and would like to run my headphone audio into my microphone or a virtual microphone, either way, I would like my audience to hear what I hear without having to hold the Mic to the speakers.
Ubuntu insists on using movie player as the default for audio files. I would like to use VLC. VLC doesn't show up on the list as preferred applications for multimedia. I tried using custom with vlc %u but it doesn't work.
Ok first off the write speeds are off the hook, 210MB/s on 5400RMS disks (5 disks in a RAID 6). However, read speeds are 68MB/s. I wondering first off, why? and secondly could this be an indicator of something not properly setup that might cause harm to my disks?
Due to crash of 10.04 grub, I installed it again from a live CD on D drive "C drive has windows 7", then immediately after install, I upgraded to 10.10 64 bit. Need to change the boot to Windows loader and not directly to Ubuntu as it happens now. I see "windows loader as an alternative option" and it works when I select it. when I boot to windows, my computer icon reads only one file on D drive "bootsqm.dat". from Ubuntu computer option, I can access all windows files.
i'm trying to install ubuntu on a sony vaio. Unfortunately i cannot boot from a cd on which i have burnt the .iso file of ubuntu. The only way i managed to install ubuntu was by creating a usb bootable stick, but here also that doesn't work so well. My workaround was to use virtual clone drive which is freeware to simulate a cd rom in windows and get the iso file started. By leaving the bootable usb stick in the computer in this way it worked...
So in the end i have grub and can load ubuntu and win xp, but then by trying to format the harddrive i kind of messed things up and had to reinstall windows. Because the DVD drive only reads original cds. So from there i will attemp to reinstall ubuntu again. But how can i get rid of win xp afterwards ? If that CD Rom would only read burnt cds or if it would habe been possible to boot from usb then i wouldn't have this trouble.
I have a fileserver running 10.04 server 64bit and samba. I connect it to my desktop which is 10.04 desktop 64bit.I have the server mounted on my desktop in fstab as://10.0.0.2/share /media/share cifs guest, uid= 1000.Up until 30 June 2010 it was all fine. Now when I write the server it is very slow e.g. 2Mbps though when I read I get >100Mbps so I think my network is still ok. If i use nautilus smb://10.0.0.2/share I can write at >100Mbps and also read at >100Mbps...So any ideas why the write speed via the fstab mount samba has started to go really slowly in the last couple of days?
im on 10.10(desktop) and mdadm was v2.8.1 from 2008, very out of date so i tried 3.2.1 -> no change. mdadm raid1 read speeds are the same as single disk. note i used the tests in the disk utility benchmarking tool at first --these showed raid 5 atleast to be much better but when i tried dd reads raid5 dropped off with larger data to almost the same (slow) speed as raid1. compare:
[code]....
using two partitions will be enough to show raid1 performs at single disk speed. I dont really want to use a 4 disk raid0 just to get the read speed i should be able to get with raid1 as i dont really care about the size loss. I would of course use raid10 but i have found this suffers from the same problem (achieve same read speed as 2 disk stripe). So whilst im shocked others aren't reporting this, unless there is some obscure reason why my system would give these results i think raid1 in not behaving as it should.
i just installed ubuntu and i wanna put wine on so i can install my itunes and adapters an so on. but when i try to install through terminal it always reads that theres no file found or cant complete installation. and theres no net hooked up to it cuz the wireless adapter wont work.
Problem: MATSHITA DVD RAM UJ-851S ( rev 1.50) reads dvds and plays audio/movie (.avi,.mp4,mp3,etc) but refuses to burn.
Media: Taiyo Yuden DVD (always excellent!!) Sony DVD+/-R (w/"AccuCore" technolgy; recent purchase 3 days ago) Sony CR -R (previously flawless, at least for audio, doc backup)
Notebook: HP Pavilion dv9000 series (dv9310us)
Symptoms: 1. Reads all media 2. Starts burn w/acetoneiso, brasero, nerolinux 4.0.0; 3. Gets to 35% - 90% complete; then each app above reports: "unspecified error.. .. .." or words to this effect, asks for log/bug report, etc.
We are graphing various system parameters using Cacti. One of our graphs shows hard drive reads and writes. A question came up: why do we need this graph?
My father has an HP PSC 1510 All in One Printer - Scanner - Copier. I have recently managed to convert him over to Linux, his current distro of choice is Fedora 12.Everything was going surprisingly well until recently: the message came up on his screen saying that the ink levels were low. After replacing the cartridges the message continued to appear. However the main nuisance is that it will not allow the printer to print at all now.
The cartridges are working as he still has vista on his system and logged in and printed out from there without hassle. Is there a way to reset the memory of the printer in Fedora? I am not much help to him here as I know nothing about printers.
I got a CD with a book - doc files. When I look at it with nautilus or with wine notepad it tells me that the CD is empty. capacity 49.4 MB. It does show the name of the CD BOOK2XTRAS - so at least the name field in the first sector is where it is supposed to be.When I boot to my 2nd drive - an old win98 sys - it sees all the files on the CD. Same CD drive in each case. I go to another fedora computer I have and it does n.ot see the contents either.
what I am trying to do but I am not sure exactly how to do it. I want to write a shell script that will replace certain values in a file with environment specific information that it pulls from a parameters file. The paramaters file looks like the following...
So I need to write a bash script that can read lines and column 3 from a file. It needs to start on line 16 and read every 20th line starting from there. But the value that it reads needs to be checked, should it be too great I need it to shut the program down.I'm pretty new to bash, but my ultimate goal is being able to safely run a program on a GPU for an extended period of time with out worrying about it overheating. I have a command that outputs information from the GPU every second, and I can save this to a file. So all I really need is something to read and check that file, I played around a bit with the awk command and can't get it to work within my for loop with dynamic variable.
Running 13.37 with either the stock 2.6.37.6 or 2.6.38.4 from /testing and the stock mutt I am having to wait 3-8 seconds while mutt reads my mail spool. Hmmm on closer examination read speed is actually fine, pressing F5 to refresh shows the spool immediately. Some odd refresh problem, this with xfce.
I am trying to create a function within my .bashrc that will process all of the files that do not end with .sh within a directory and execute them. The following is what I have so far. I am missing a way of excluding files that end with .sh though.
function startall { for file in /etc/init.d/*.; do "${file}" start
