Slackware :: Mutt Reads Mail Spool Very Slowly

May 11, 2011

Running 13.37 with either the stock 2.6.37.6 or 2.6.38.4 from /testing and the stock mutt I am having to wait 3-8 seconds while mutt reads my mail spool. Hmmm on closer examination read speed is actually fine, pressing F5 to refresh shows the spool immediately. Some odd refresh problem, this with xfce.

Slackware :: Change Mail Spool Location ?

Mar 2, 2010

Is there a way to change the mail spool location from /var/mail/ to some other place? I'm thinking of users own home directory or $HOME/.mail.

This is because system partition is not big enough to keep all mail from the company and /home is in a different one.

Creating another partition to keep /var or /var/mail seems too much just to keep emails.

Solution: checking /usr/doc/procmail-x.xx/examples/advanced

Slackware :: Set Up Fetchmail And Mutt To Send And Receive Mail From The Terminal?

Mar 28, 2010

In my continuing quest to live without X most of the time, I am trying to set up fetchmail and Mutt to get and send mail. I only want to be able to send and receive text based mail, and so far I am running into trouble with what I think should be pretty simple. For receiving my mail, I believe I only need to create a .fetchmailrc file in my home directory with the entry:

Code: poll [URL] protocol pop3 username "myusername" password "mypassword" But I get:
2 messages for myusername at mail.myISP.com (7965 octets).
fetchmail: connection to localhost:smtp [127.0.0.1/25] failed: Connection refused.
fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed
fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from wetumpka@mail.btopenworld.com and delivering to SMTP host localhost
reading message myusername@pop-smtp.ISP.mail.fy5.b.yahoo.com:1 of 2 (2734 octets)fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP)

It appears to me that it is finding mail but does not know where to deliver it and is refused a connection to my machine. Also, I cannot figure out how to set up my SMTP for my ISP in Mutt to send mail. Can someone point me to a simple tutuorial on how to do these things. I really only want to do what you would with Thunderbird, but from the command line.

Server :: Can't Sen Mail Over LAN From Mutt To Postfix

Jun 4, 2011

I'm trying to get my network set up. There is an internal network separated, by a dedicated firewall, from the DMZ. I'm trying to send mail from the internal network, using mutt, to the postfix server on the DMZ.No firewall is set up yet on the dedicated firewall(the whole network is, at the moment, protected by the border router) Mutt was installed with the smtp, pop, imap, ssl, sasl, gdbm options.

I thought the fact that it was compiled with the SMTP flag set would enable me to either send mail without an MTA on the same machine that mutt is installed on(internal network host) Or that i could just specify the path to the sendmail binary and not have to start postfix as a daemon ?I've found out that sendmail is supposed to be a postfix command. So i added:

Code:

sendmail="/usr/sbin/sendmail"
to /Users/me/.mutt/muttrc

But now when i start mutt i get an error saying:

Code:

/usr/sbin/sendmail: Unknown command

Obviously i started postfix before firing up mutt The permissions say that i should be able to execute sendmail as a normal user. But mutt isn't dealing with it, even though permissions appear to be correct. What do i need to do to get mail, from a normal user, over my LAN working(with mutt and postfix)?Once i have this working then i can get a proper domain name and configure postfix on the DMZ for SASL+TLS etc etcBTW i can send mail to postfix from internal network using

Code:

telnet serverhost 25
etc

Slackware :: Mutt Doesn't Recognize Mailcap Setting?

Jan 7, 2011

After the new year I updated my -current to the latest, and now mutt doesn't recognize my mailcap setting for text/calendar attachments. In ~/.mailcap, I have

text/calendar;korganizer -m %s

and in mutt, .ics attachments are recognised as mime type text/calendar. It's always worked like that. Now, however, mutt is just paging the .ics attachment to the screen.

I've checked the content of all other mailcap files listed in mutt's mailcap path, and ~/.mailcap is the only one with an entry for text/calendar (in fact, ~/.mailcap is the only file in the path that exists). Mutt does recognise my image mime types (eg. image/jpeg;mutt_bgrun geeqie -t %s).

I can import the .ics attachment by hand by saving it to /tmp and running 'korganizer -m /tmp/file' manually. That takes a slight moment to respond (KDE bloat? :-)). When I try opening it from mutt, there is no delay before it pages the file, so I don't think it's even trying korganizer first.

I can't remember changing any configs recently, which is why I'm suspecting something in a recent Slackware update must have affected it.

This version of mutt seems to be broken ... at least as far as working with motion and msmtp to automatically transmit detected video images to my e-mail account.

I don't see any errors, mutt simply doesn't transmit the data via msmtp as it should.

I switched back to the version of Mutt in Slackware 13.1 and the automatic transmission of video detected by motion and transmitted by mutt via msmtp started working properly.

Slackware :: Tends To Move A Bit More Slowly Than Other Distributions To Adopt Newer Features (like GRUB)

Mar 17, 2011

I'm writing a story for LWN on Slackware 13.37 this week. I'd like to hear from current Slackware users: How are you using it, and why you're using it? What appeals to you about Slackware Linux instead of Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Debian, etc.? Slackware tends to move a bit more slowly than other distributions to adopt newer features (like, say, GRUB) -- is this a pro or con for you? How long have you been running Slackware?

Any other thoughts about Slackware? If you respond, indicate in the post how you'd like to be attributed if I use your response in the story. (e.g., sign your name or indicate that I should use your forum username, etc.)

i mean, instead of login to the server and read the messages from /var/spool/root, it will be a lot easyear and faster to found about them, if they will be sent to my email account

i know i can make the cron output be sent by email, if i place in front of the cron line something like :

but in /var/spool/mail/ for root or other usernames you can found many other messages.
