I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 (i686) on Acer Aspire 5551G. This laptop has Realtek ALC272 sound chip. Both sound and microphone work fine. But, when I start video/audio call in Empathy the microphone dies until I reboot the laptop (sound continues to work). The same happens with Pidgin and Ekiga. So, I can't make video/audio calls. I believe this is pulse/alsa bug.
View 9 Repliesi did a recent install of slackware 13.1 in my toshiba nb200 netbook and everything is running good, except the sound. i can listen to only one audio stream from one software. if videos (firefox) is playing a video, audacious won't play, and vice-versa. i did some research but i didn't find a solution for this problem.

I'm using openSUSE 11.2 KDE on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi 1536 laptop. My problem is that my microphone (I'm attempting to use a 3.5mm headset) doesn't work. Audio playback however does work through the built-in speakers and headphones.
I have gone through the SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE as suggested by oldcpu on the Welcome to multimedia sub-area sticky.

I rebuild ALSA twice, got the latest stable version, installed the one from ubuntu-audio-dev, but nothing. The output from alsa-info.sh can be found here: [URL] I have this Toshiba and the sound device is just completely messed up and partly depends on if I have headphones plugged into the machine when booting it up: Then sometimes everything (Microphone, Headphone, Speakers) works fine. But other times the speakers do not work at all then only the headphones. If I have the headphone not plugged in than in 75% of cases (roughly) the speakers won't go mute when I plug the headphones in.
The microphone(s) is the biggest concern as I need the computer to use Skype. Obviously I would want the jack to work... They sometimes respond when booted, but other times not. They more often work when the microphone jack is plugged in, but fail after a little while, then sometimes they don't work at all. It frustrating, I have tried various models of the ALC272 driver, but none works for this machine.
Just installed squeeze on my Samsung NC10 netbook and lost sound. Sound under lenny worked. Driver is loading as shown by lsmod:

I recently installed 10.04 on my Dell Inspiron 9300. After a clean install, the ATi drivers (for a Radeon x300) were automatically installed, and worked fine out of the box. Soon after all of this, I decided to run an update. Now, while my drivers are listed as installed in synaptic, nothing is recognized, not even the command "aticonfig" when typed in the terminal. When I try to access the Catalyst Control Center, it tells me that either I have no video drivers, or there's a problem with my card.Is there anything I can do about this? I've already tried reinstalling the drivers from synaptic.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is not a deal breaker for me, but it is annoying. I'm running 10.04 and have an eVGA GeForce 210 card. I'd like to install the restricted video driver, since watching full screen video is extremely choppy. The problem starts when I install "nVidia version current" (only one available) from the Hardware Drivers. I reboot, and I have no sound. Video works wonderfully! But, no sound. I check, and basically it seems to be indicating that I simply do not have any choices for enabling sound. y sound is onboard from my Gigabyte EP43-UD3L motherboard. I've disabled the video driver, since I would rather have sound with small screen video than no sound at all.

I have a dual Monitor Setup, both SXGA LCDs, one rotated left. With kernels and Xservers available from debian making settings appropriate kills X and apparently leaves modesetting and keyboard missconfigured - monitors say: no signal and it is not possible to switch to any VT until sysrq-unraw (alt-print-r) is pressed, which makes the system responding to keyboard, but still leaves the screens blank. Restarting the display manager sets a working mode with both screens showing the same.

Press the space bar again to resume and Amarok starts playing again with the status bar moving and the timer counting down, but no sound. If I move to the next song, sound starts working again. Or if I double click on a different song, sound works. If I use the xine backend, the problem goes away. I'm using Amarok-2.4 and KDE 4.6.1.

I've recently built a new PC with an ASUS M4A79T Deluxe motherboard with Realteck ALC1200 integrated audio. I'm connecting my Logitech z-5300 to it.
I'm not getting any audio despite connecting everything properly.
I'm not sure if it is because there is no stock drivers for it, or if there is some other issue. I'm not sure what the source of my problem is, or how to fix it. I'm a noob when it comes to audio, so any help is greatly appreciated!
Well I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit along side Windows 7, and I've been unable to get any sounds working, apart from the log on sound. So I tried installing some drivers, and now there is no sound at all, and no sound devices show up in System-Preferences-Sound-hardware
I'm using the on board HD Audio (ALC 889A) and using the optical Audio out for 5.1 Surround sound.
I've tried just using the Stereo ( Green Jack ) out, and still nothing. The suggestions on the on the Ubuntu site, and the following post didn't seem to work either.

I Can't find a great deal of posts with the Realtek HD audio.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, but so far I've been unable to get sound to work. I know my sound card is Realtek, because I've had to install the HD Audio Codec Driver when I was on Windows. I was running Ubuntu 9.04 and just upgraded to 9.10 recently. I see many others are having problems with their sound. I too do not have sound. I did get sound running briefly with an Alsa update, but it was muffled. In trying many other fixes, I again have no sound and can not resolve it. I am thinking of burning a new cd and doing a fresh install and starting over.
My lap top is an MSI GT725 US model with an HD4850 mobility graphics card. I dual boot between Vista 32 bit and Ubuntu.

I have an MSI S420 with a realtek alc883 onboard. I upgraded from ubutu 8.04 to 10.4 recently, The sound worked in 8.04 although the mic did't work and the same thing in 8.10 (i went through all upgrades) it stopped working at all in 9.04 onwards.
If i did Lspci -v it did say the name of my card, ( I unmuted all in alsamixer and got the codecs but even a test soud won't work) I also dowloaded a driver from Realtek itself, that didn't work.
Then I edited alsabace.conf some more. I tried every one that could possily be it at [URL] including all that said MSI.
I then tried Lordraidens comprehensive sound guide from step 1 to step 5, I used the module-assistant and istalled a driver that was called "hda-realtek-codec" or so. It was the only appropriate one on the list.

I've been trying to get my surround sound(5.1) to work for the past couple of of days, followed a number of guides, but nothing seems to get it working at all. I'm connecting the speakers using 3 analogue audio cables, I have tested and they work fine under Windows. When I go into the Sound options in Ubuntu I don't see a 5.1 profile listed under the Hardware tab, only stereo(and that works fine).
The sound controller is a Realtek ALC892 built-in to my mobo(Gigabyte P55A-UD3).
Here is some info I've seen requested in other threads, I'm running 10.10 RC, but I can assure you it doesn't work under earlier versions.

I downloaded the file from Realtek's website. It says it's for Linux/Unix so I assume it's also compatible to Ubuntu. I attempted to install and even made a video about it here:[URL]... I understand most it, but I don't know what they mean by "patch" I have searched the entire folder for patch but nothing returned in the results. Maybe I have to download the correct file from somewhere else? I tried searching for it, but I have no luck finding it. I had Ubuntu installed for over a month and never tried compiling software before until when I tried to install Realltek HD Audio Manager.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get video calls to work using Empathy 2.30.0. I'm running the 10.04 beta right now, but I've had this problem ever since I installed Empathy. The problem is essentially that I don't even see the option to do a video call with my contact. I can do an audio call, but the option to do a video call is greyed out.
My webcam is built-in (the computer is a Dell Inspiron 1545n). I know that it _can_ work under Linux, as I regularly use Skype. Also, just after I upgraded to 10.04, I briefly had the "video call" option, but when the program crashed I tried to call, and then the option was gone again. What was strange is that for a little bit, before it crashed, my webcam was working, and I could see the image it was receiving. So it can't even be that Empathy just can't use my webcam.
Does anyone know anything about this problem? Everywhere I've looked says that Empathy should be able to make calls using GTalk.
I'm am successfully adding my gmail account to both empathy and pidgin (it shows up in green that i'm 'available' on my computer). However, I am unable to send or receive any messages. On empathy it just says there was a network error - unknown, and pidgin say there is an xmpp message error code 404.
I've been trying for months to get IM working with my gmail account.
i'm trying to use video call in skype or empathy, either is fine. Neither works. In Skype I can receive video but it doesn't broadcast mine at all. In empathy it shows my video right up to the second the call connects, then the 'video call' crashes.
edit: cam is definitely working (works fine in cheese and other cam apps) just not broadcasting

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got 9.10 installed on a dual boot T-43 Thinkpad.The Thinkpad has a built-in microphone which is driving me crazy. I have a pair of outboard Sony speakers sitting on my desk & the sound of the fan and every keystroke is picked up by the mic and amplified back at me through the speakers. If I turn the volume on the speakers up more than about half way the mic picks up the feedback I get a high pitched squeal through the speakers.I've gone into "Sound Preferences" and muted "Input Volume," but it has no effect - the mic is still picking up and amplifying every keystroke & giving me feedback.How can I turn off the damn mic? (by the way, I do not have this problem if I boot into XP)
