Ubuntu :: Mouse Jumps To Corner Of Screen?
Oct 10, 2010
For about a month now, my mouse has been jumping to one of the corners of my screen every few minutes (normally the top-left). I also had a problem where the right mouse button would double-click 90% of the time.
I just replaced my mouse a few minutes ago, and now the right button works fine, but the cursor keeps jumping to the corner of the screen.
I'm fairly certain this is not a hardware problem, since switching mice did not fix the problem.
Both were PS2 corded laser mice.

I have a dual-screen set-up with Ubuntu 10.10. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. I use my lower-resolution laptop screen on the left and a larger monitor on the right. The monitor is also physically higher than the monitor. See attachment for a screenshot.I have correctly set up my displays so that if the mouse is in the middle of the screen it can move from one screen to the other without jumping. The jumping happens when moving off of one screen in an area where the other screen is not directly next to it (some people call this 'the void').
Example: (See the attachment for a visual example of this.) My mouse is in the external monitor (right monitor). As I move the mouse to the top-left of the monitor (position 1), I by mistake go a little too far and instead of hitting the Ubuntu applications menu, I ended up at the top-right of the laptop monitor (left monitor; position 2). I quickly realize my mistake and move the mouse back to the right monitor, but now the mouse is at the middle-left position (position 3).This same error occurs by moving the mouse on the laptop monitor (left monitor) passed the bottom-right position. This is a big problem when scrolling vertical scroll bars on the laptop monitor (left monitor).I am looking for a fix that if the mouse is at position 1 in the attachment and I move the mouse left, it stays at position 1 and does not go to position 2.

slackware and am infact running Vector Linux which is slackware based. I used to use fedora on my old laptop got a new on and tried vector. The mouse on the new one doesn't seem to want to work properly, it jumps alot and usually ends up at the end of the screen unable to move, however does manage to click almost every icon on the screen and change desktops.A USB mouse works fine its just the touchpad. It's a Zoostorm Freedom and I can't even find the windows drivers for it let alone what i need for this. I tried editing the xorg.conf to stop the tab button, which doesn't do anything, installed the latest synaptics and still nothing, tried using what someone else uses and still nothing, I cant even find out what kind of mouse it is!?

I recently installed Kubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite 5205 laptop (which is prone to overheating, if it helps - it was on a platform in the back for airflow, though), which worked great for about 4 days.
Recently, I picked it up (looking for a USB port) and rotated it around a little bit. However, after this, the screen was darkened (not fully), and I could move the mouse for about half a second, after which it jumps back to the upper left corner of the screen. Rebooting doesn't help.

Biggest one that make game unplayable is mouse. Mouse isn't moving smooth it jumps around. I cannot shoot anything. So i asked for help, and everybody just say install windows. And where is fun in that. If people when ever run into problem with some software on linux just install windows. Linux would never go forward. I m not some great gamer, but i would like to be able to play this game. Probably somebody run into same problem. I sow that people talk about something like dis on WOW and wine but simptoms doesn't seem same to me.

I'm after fresh install of Fedora x64, did all updates. I have wireless pci card TP-LINK TL-wn510G (Atheros chipset) which was detected correctly.
Everything is working smoothly until I start to download from internet in firefox (or in konqueror - no difference). On increased network activity my mouse cursor starts to lag/jump when moving - it's almost impossible to do anything using mouse when there is file download. On minor traffic, like browsing webpages, I don't notice such behaviour.
I checked if its rather because of hdd activity not the network, but no - when copying big file on hdd everything works fine.
I'm also experiencing huge ssh lag/jitter despite the ping is low.
I fired top when downloading, but there is no process eating cpu in suspicious way.
I have a regular usb mouse.
On the same computer I have installed Win 7 and OpenSuse and nothing like this happens on that systems.
I think there might be a some kind of conflict between wifi card and usb mouse (they share resources) but don't know how to check/repair. Could you please tell me how should I proceed to check what is going on. I haven't modified any hw settings, the installation went w/o any errors.

I am using Xubuntu 10.10 64bit . When I press the quit or logoff buttons on the desktop it takes me to the logon screen and then at the bottom right corner it allows me to shutdown or reboot. I would like to bypass this screen entirely, and just shutdown reboot from the desktop. Only I use this machine at home ,no none else needs to log on. Is there any way to do this?

For some reason the mouse curser starts out in the middle of the screen after booting as normal but as soon as i move it, it gets stuck in the top left corner of the screen. It still responds to clicks and i can sometimes see it "wants" to move but itets repositioned into that corner.he problem exists in the live-cd session as well as in the installed session.I looked into the Xorg.0.log file and it said something along the lines of:Code:HID XXXX:XXXX: failed to initialize for relative axesI suspect this to be the culprit, yet i've never had any problems with the mouse in any other operating system (writing from kubuntu 9.10 right now) and i've used most of the popular ones.Is there anything i can do about it? Seems that X is doing things differently in Fedora... There's got to be some switch or something.

When I installed fedora 14 when moving mouse to the top right corner I would get all windows arranged one next to another on the desktop so I can choose between them. Now I don't have that feature any more.
Does it conflict with compiz, or is it one of compiz plugins? Which package is responsible for it and how can I get it back?

I finally got around to installing Fedora 15 on my HTPC. I noticed that the mouse cursor starts in the upper left corner of the screen as soon as the login screen appears. This means that after login, if I only used the keyboard so far, the Gnome Shell overlay starts immediately. This is at most an interesting quirk until I try to set XMBC to automatically launch. Now I have to press <Esc> or move the mouse to de-activate the overlay before I can use the program. Is this mouse cursor thing intended behaviour, is there some software fix, or is it a hardware quirk? I have a Radeon HD 4650 graphics card (Smolt profile).

In OpenSuSE11.2 I followed this url to got it to work: Genius MousePen 8x6 It worked like a charm. In OpenSuSe 11.3 the Xorg stuff is different. In /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d there is a wizardpen.conf but when I use the tablet the mouse hits the top left corner. Using the settings from the url above doesn't make it work either.

I have been using Netbook Remix 9.10 and it's been great until this morning.
Today when I turned it on, after Grub and the loading screen, the system brought up a smaller white screen in the corner with my username@machinename"~$ as the first line.
This looks like a terminal window. I can see my folders and use the system but I get no GUI anymore. Not sure why this is happening.
Tried booting into Recovery and updating the system, but to no avail. I've also searched the forums for the last few hours but have not found anything similar.
Anyone have any idea what to do? code...
Not sure if this is relevant to my problem or not. However, I do remember this happening on my desktop version of 9.10... that was solved by installing 9.04.

Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.

Before I go any further let me make it perfectly clear that this post is not in regards to Shuttleworth's recent decision to move the "titlebar buttons". I honestly don't care and in fact it saves me time since I've always moved the close button to the left side and then removed the minimize and maximize buttons anyway. This problem is made even more annoying because I thought we were all done with it. I've been back and forth between distros, KDE, and GNOME since 2000. . . I would run head first into this issue often out of nowhere. . . I feel like I'm back in 2003 again.
According to Fitt's Law, corners and edges have infinite width as far as the user is concerned, one of the reasons I have loved GNOME for so long now is because of the use of corners, so imagine my surprise when I can no longer simply throw my mouse cursor up into the corner and simply CLOSE the maximized window that I'm currently using, instead it drags the window. This is obnoxious and useless. I can already grab at any other part of the top edge of the screen outside of the far corner in order to drag a window, why is this happening again? It is SO frustrating particularly since GNOME is supposed to be so damned concerned with usability.
I think this change might have something to do with that monstrosity known as gnome-shell. I guess they were figuring that with the proposed 2.30/3.0 switch over to this new window manager, they could simply do whatever they like with metacity. . . or maybe gnome-shell USES the same configurations as metacity (seems plausible), all that I know is that this truly pisses me off.It may seem trivial but it's a daily use factor for me and I have no way of changing the behavior. I just want to be able to throw my mouse in a corner and click, it never seemed that big of an issue in the past, I don't see why the developer(s) saw the need to change this.
And to forestall all those that would ask me to switch from metacity to compiz or vice-versa, it's with both and I am NOT going to use compiz's own digusting window manager themes, I like my metacity themes. My other choices are KDE, enlightenment, openbox or Xfce, Well the first two are travesties since I'm used to my GNOME applications and they don't look good in those DE's, the third looks like crap (to me) and Xfce has corner close button functionality only per theme (some themes do and some don't)

I have a Windows XP Dell laptop that completely froze the other day. I cannot start it up, and cannot even access safe mode -- it just goes to black screen with underscore in the upper left corner.
So, I did some searching and saw a recommendation to create a Ubuntu Live CD to run and access the info on the hard drive, at least. I have most of it backed up, but not the drivers and I know that will be a pain to redo. So, I am mostly hoping at this point to recover a little info off the drive before reinstalling the OS. Of course, if I could just fix it, that would be better...
I get an error message when I try to access the hard drive through Ubuntu that says it is in hibernation mode and I need to start windows and shut it down properly before Ubuntu can mount the drive. Since I can't get into Windows, this is impossible. It also said something about being able to mount it read-only.

I have Windows XP, Vista and Ubuntu (10.04) all installed on my single hard drive. I re-installed XP and then ran the Vista CD to repair the Vista bootloader so that I could boot into XP and Vista. I can't figure out how to boot into Ubuntu now. I tried using EasyBCD (I believe an older version, maybe 1.72) to add Ubuntu to the Vista bootloader but I didn't have any luck. Ubuntu is in the menu, but when I select it, it goes to a screen that has GRUB in the upper left corner and does not load Ubuntu.
If it helps, before I re-installed XP and re-installed the Vista bootloader I was using GRUB for XP, Vista and Ubuntu because Ubuntu was the last thing to get installed.Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 ============================= Boot InfoSummary:===============================> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdasda1: _________________________________________________________________________File system: ntfsBoot sector type: Windows Vista/7B
