I just installed Lucid over Karmic on my netbook, unfortunately I had a little removeable USB hard drive attached during the installation. now when I boot, it keeps looking for the little HD, and I have to press "S" to make it "skip." what can I do to tell Lucid that I seldom use this drive so please shut up about it every time I turn it on?
View 1 RepliesI've set up a Lucid system with software RAID and encryption, with three encrypted partions - swap (/dev/md1), the root filesystem (/dev/md2), and /home (/dev/md3). The unencrypted /boot partition is /dev/md0.
This works well but the passphrase had to be entered three times at bootup. Obviously it would be preferable to enter the passphrase once to unlock the root partition, then have the others unlocked via key files. So I added key files to the swap and home partitions and modified /etc/crypttab to use them:

Since the swap partition is no longer referenced in fstab or crypttab, why is there still a bootup password prompt for it? What else needs to be done to stop it?
I've been running 10.04 (lucid, Kernel Linux 2.6.32-25-generic, GNOME 2.30.2) for about 3 or 4 months and everything has been great, until yesterday.
All of the sudden, bootup has started taking longer than usual and the panel at the top of the screen with "applications", "places", etc. doesn't appear until the machine has been running for at least 2 minutes.
Also- the mouse and keyboard (and my external hard drive), all of which are usb, do not respond until about 2 minutes after startup appears to have finished.
So, basically, here's what happens when I power the machine on:
1. Everything functions quickly, and as normal, until my desktop picture shows and the icons on it appear.
2. Whereas before I would have had mouse and keyboard use (and use of the top panel with applications, places, etc.) at this point, I don't have use of any of these.
3. So I just wait, without keyboard or mouse, etc. for about 2-3 min and all of the sudden the top panel emerges, the mouse and keyboards start working, and then the external hard drive appears.
4. As if this weren't annoying enough, after everything above starts to work, opening applications (e.g. firefox) takes a lot longer than it used to. Basically, starting any application after startup takes a long time the first time it's opened.
I don't understand why this is happening. Before this, startup was super fast, and everything was working great. I dont know how to check into recently loaded updates, but perhaps something got changed there that is causing the problem.
I haven't changed anything hardware related at all, so I don't imagine the change in performance is due to anything on that front, but I could be wrong.
my brother's computer is pretty slow, but was working fine with ubuntu karmic, but I decided to finally upgrade him to lucid the other day, and recently his bootups take, at worst, 10 minutes,when in karmic it took way less. It just sits on a blank screen (not even a blinking cursor)
His pc's specs are:
1.4 Ghz processor (single core)
on-board graphics (no graphics card)
two hdd's one 80GB and one 150GB (the 150GB is split into 3 partitions)
465.7MB of ram 4.1GB of swap
I've attached his bootchart and it seems that Modprobe, Framebuffer, udevadm, and blkid are taking the most time to load, but I dont really know, i'm new to linux. Also how do i disable bootchart now that iv'e used it. p.s Heres he same bootchart just in case the one attached gets shrunk by ubuntuforums [URL]..
If I try and install, any distro on a ide External hard drive, Will I still get a Bootup Grub installed on my internal Windows MBR. I am thinking the answer is yes.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.4 the console output stops during bootup at various points (during init final scripts processing and when the tty1 auto login). This is a colinux environment but has nothing do with the problem as it is the same version of colinux kernel that works correctly with 9.10 but exhibits the problem with in version 10.4 Lucid.
when tty1 using mingetty auto logs in the .profile file starts the gnome-session (command: DISPLAY=$DISPLAY dbus-launch gnome-session &) and when the panel comes up the shutdown button is disabled when it should be enabled.
However, if during the bootup when the console output stops, I immediately toggle to virtual console 2 (tty2) and immediately toggle back to virtual console 1 (tty1) it restores the output to the console and when bootup completes the gnome panel has the shutdown button enabled as it should be. Some times when the console output stops it looks like a screen clear was issued and other times the lines remains an the screen. I added --noclear to the line that calls mingetty in /etc/init/tty1.conf but is has no effect.
I has a look at the release candidate today as a live DVD and found that my keyboard settings were incorrect. I was obliged to remove the USA settings from the keyboard layout.
When I reverted to Karmic I found that it was necessary to correct the keyboard settings back to UK as somehow or other the settings from the live DVD registered.
It might be worth watching for this when testing/using live DVD before full adoption
I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 lucid.I'm trying to install nvidia drivers from nvidia.com. And I need to stop gdm and use text interface.When I try #sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop.It turn off gdm, but i can't get to login.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEveryone seems to what to know how to automount an external USB drive. I'm trying to stop 9.10 from automounting it. Normally I use fstab to mount an external drive where I prefer it to be mounted. But after the last software update karmic (9.10) is now automounting my drive and screwing up the fstab mount. Some how the drive is showing up as /dev/hdd1 and /dev/hde1. I could just shutoff automount but I like it for USB sticks and cameras and MP3 players. How do you stop automount from mounting just an exteral USB drive??
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Lucid working nicely now, and I've started using Gwibber, which seems to try to connect at login. The only problem is that I'm immediately asked for the login keyring password (which happens to be the same exact password I just entered to log into the machine). This happens every time I boot the machine.
Is there any way to make it stop asking me for this login keyring password? I just don't get why I have to enter the same password twice.

I have an external (USB) sound-card attached to my laptop, through which I generally want all of my sound routed. By and large, the device works wonderfully - with one minor (but annoying) quirk: almost every time the computer reawakens from suspend mode with the device plugged in, something in the OS automatically mutes all sound coming from that device. Note that Ubuntu does NOT restore control to my on-board sound chip - so whenever this happens, I'm left with a machine that's basically universally muted, for no good reason. Of course, I can just go into the volume control panel and unmute the external card - but I'm getting a bit tired of having to do this each time I turn on the machine.
Anybody have any ideas as to how I can force Ubuntu to NOT mute the external card?

My external is 500 firewire 400 and NTFS.

A year ago I put some stuff on my external hard drive and now I'd like to retrieve it. I've upgraded through a couple of versions of Ubuntu since then and now it doesn't work. I saw that this is a frequent problem in the forums but couldn't find a solution.
How I can access my drive?

i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using

and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.
i just installed 10.04 and everything works fine except that it does not recognize my external cd/dvd rom and my usb flash drives, I already found some threads related to this and they that talk about going to config editor and activating these options: media_auto_run and automount_open.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Onetouch 4 mini 160GB I bought a year ago. I t used to work fine but all of a sudden it started to become a problem device. My home pc has two operating systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 lucid. the drive often fails to load on both systems. Sometimes it's recognized, but the reads are very slow and opening a folder on the drive takes around 120 seconds. Itried reformatting the whole drive, chicking it with chkdsk but it didn't help. Now I have around 70 GB of data on the drive. On my office pc I don't have such a problem and the drive works fine.
My home pc has an Asus P5B motherboard and intel core 2 duo cpu. I tried unplugging other usb devices, plugging in the extra power cord (data + data/power) and it didn't help. The drive also makes beeping sounds when I try to browes the files on it. I'm sure thid is not OS related as both Windows and Linux have the same issue. This is the output of dmesg | tail command on linux. You can see the os keeeps "resetting" the drive:

Well, the title pretty much sums it up. Whenever i plug in my external speakers, my laptop speakers continue to put out sound, which is good until i turn up the volume and hear rattling.
I am running ubuntu 9.04 64-bit 2.6.28-13 on an MSi GX620.
whats the difference between restarting/stopping apache using 'service httpd restart/stop' and apachectl restart/stop. I know that using 'service httpd restart' is actually a script in /etc/init.d/httpd but what about apachectl?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode).Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).
I have ubuntu 10.04 , It was working fine the first time from USB . I tried to install ubuntu on my harddrive that had vista on it. But it gave me some error. And when I try to open it from hard drive its just blank screen.
And booting from USB doesnt work it comes on loading screen and doesnt do anything.

Up until recently have always been a gnome or xfce user, recently decided to try kubuntu. I like it, but its very slow to boot. I get a blank blue screen (same shade as grub) right after grub has finished its countdown and starts Kubuntu.

Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default).Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).

I had Ubuntu working perfectly until I installed two Nvidia updates. (proprietary driver)Now Ubuntu freezes at the Ubuntu loading screen. Unfortunately I can't remember how to access the terminal at bootup, does anyone know?Im not sure what I will try yet but I might just try getting updates in case I will get a new Nvidia update to fix this.

I had configured runlevel 3 (I went into /etc/rc3.d/ and removed the symlink to /etc/init.d/gdm) to be w/o GDM, so that if I had chosen it, my box would not boot into X. How can I achieve the same effect in Lucid?
