what I do I can't seem to be able to USB boot the minimal image of Ubuntu. No matter what program I use (Ubootnetin/Universal USB Installer/Etc) I always get a blank screen when selecting anything from the menu Install/Command-line Install)
1. Installed Ubuntu minimal 2. Download and installed ATI/AMD drivers (via envy) 3. Primary display DELL 2007FPb (SVGA cable) cloned with secondary display PANASONIC TH-42PV80PA (DVI/HDMI cable) 4. PANASONIC TH-42PV80PA have black borders, the image is underscanned (left, right, top, bottom) 5. In Full install of ubuntu 9.10 (not MINIMAL) in Gnome when run amdcccle the solution was very simple. Just drag the slider to the maximum and image was overscanned to the full surface of the screen.
How to do point 5. from shell in UBUNTU MINIMAL (the light version without gnome)? Tried already from shell: Code: sudo amdcccle but the Catalyst control Panel doesn't start. Say something bad about x server. aticonfig? xrandr? xorg.conf?
I'm playing around with the RHEL 6 install so as to create a minimal install image to be used as a generic node for a cloud. I posted this in the security section as reducing the number of services etc seems like a security activity, i.e. reducing the running processes to minimize the attack surface.
Anyways, looking through linux from scratch etc, and the NSA hardening list I'm a bit overwhelmed. Anyone have hints on any good documentation saying what is really needed for a basic system with network/ip/arp/eb rules? The RHEL 6 minimal basic puts in a c/c++ compiler along with other things. that seems unnecessary to me for a basic minimal install.
After a long time I tried ubuntu(9.10) again on my fileserver, I have some remarks; why does a minimal server installation include X/openoffice? I don't need document conversion on a fileserver and I bet a lot of people don't. Wouldn't it be better to create a new server package and leave minimal minimal? low memory installs (64mb) don't work unless you configure swap by hand in between things, 64mb ram is a lot in my eyes. I mean, not to be rude but if I wanted all this I could've better installed Solaris.
That said it's stable and running fine. Since it's my home fileserver I tried to convert my previously created raid10 mirror on an adaptec 1200 card to a softraid 5 solution. This is wat I did:
I got 'Mandriva 2010.2 One KDE Europe - Americas' live image with a tech magazine as an .iso. The live usb image created with Unetbootin on my Mint 10 of the iso won't boot. All I get a warning no operating system or something. I tried the Mandriva-seed script but it gives an error
Also tried the isotostick script too but it too won't work. Here is the error message
Quote:
Not verifying image...(no checkisomd5 in Ubuntu so skipping)! ./isotostick.sh: line 103: /lib/udev/vol_id: No such file or directory USB filesystem must be vfat or ext[23] Cleaning up to exit...
note that the file system of the usb drive is FAT32 and the md5sum of the iso is the same as that specified in the website !!
I have created an iso image from a RHEL5.4 disc using mkisofs. mkisofs -A "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -V "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -v -U -J -R -T -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o /tmp/RHEL54-x86_64-dvd.iso .
It creates the iso image no problem, however when I go to boot a new server from the disc I get the boot prompt, hit enter, answer the language and keyboard questions and then it throws the following error: "The Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD and press OK to retry". Perhaps I need to specify in my mkisofs command that its supposed to be iso9660? This is on a RHEV virtual machine.
I need to show a static image with the logo of our department while Debian boots. Is there any easy way or tool to do this? (Any parameter of the kernel maybe?) It doesn't have to be anything fancy (like a progress bar)... just a plain an simple image.
I've seen many bootsplash projects..but most of them are broken. I tried splashy (which is available on the repo), but by the time it loads, my system is already booted, so I don't really like it. note that I don't have any Xorg server installed.
Using Slackware 13.0. Have a Microdia web cam (60fc) and was (still am) looking for a simple free application to test it. Found a site which identified the drivers, modules, etc. needed so was checking my messages file and noticed that the Image Sensor HV7131R is not always identified as being detected when booting: kernel: usb 1-1.3: HV7131R image sensor detected Is this a problem or what?
I found modules videodev, V4L2, but could not find compat_ioctl32 and it is not listed in the modules loaded. Is this correct? Could not "find" it. I see usbcore listed during booting but does this mean it is a module? or a driver? or what? Also cannot find the an appropriate module that is for either ehci_hcd or uhci_hcd related as both of these appear in the messages. Also I see that the camera is for SN9C105 bridge and know that the "sn9c105" is supposed to be included in "sn9c102" module(?) but the SN9C105 camera notation does not always appear in messages. Is this correct? or (I think) I am confused by the numbering and cases used, i.e. what is a module (loadable?) a bridge and why change cases? Can someone straighten me out? Are all modules loaded listed by lsmod or just the loadable ones and usbcore etc. are "modules" loaded at another time?
I have a fresh install of COS5.6 installed a test laptop. I have following instructions to set up the PXE server based on the following: http:[url]......The base PXE installation seems to work fine (The menu labeled CentOS 5.6 works fine ). The whole purpose of this was to be able to boot iso's like Hirens and Imaging software ISO's.The issue is that whenever i try to pick an iso from the list it just says "Could not find ramdisk image:" [path to iso][path to iso] being either of the two iso i had set up to test this.
I would like to think that i made a typo but i can find one. The files i used are from the source of syslinux v4.0.4.The following information should be pertinent Contents of /tftpboot/pxelinux.0/default[code].....
I have a limited experice with linux in an enterprise environment and looking for any direction as to what to do about this.
When playing dvd's, vob files and wmv files, the image comes with high contrast colors ,very intense red/green/blue. very dark too. I have vlc 1.1.4 installed, using ubuntu 10.10, libdvdcss2 installed. for the rest of the video formats it seems to work fine. any ideas on what should I start debugging?
I was given a forensic Image which I now know is a DD image of the drive (Vista) and am trying to mount the image or extract the image to another drive. I'm not sure of the extention type or if the image is a partition or the entire drive. I think it is the entire drive.
Is it possible to mount a DD image to a device. If I can't do that I just want to extract the files to run some programs against the drive. Can I view the files under Ubuntu or do I have to remove the drive and stick it into a Vista computer.
I purchased a second drive today and was hoping the command line would be something simple.
Or am I on the wrong track, should I be doing this all in a windows environment. The reason I picked ubuntu was because of the reporting tools.
I would like to change my startup image (usplash image). For that i change /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu_logo.png and /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu_logo16.png. Then the splash screen of shutdown screen changes .But booting screen doesnot change.
I have just exported 3 png files out of gimp for a html document I'm working on right now, and they are all almost the same, except I need each to load when the user does something. So the first image will display on the page, and when a user puts their cursor over it, then it will load image 2. When they press it, it loads image 3.
I have a Canon iR3570/iR4570 PXL, and installed the driver CQue 1.0 TCP/IP Queue from Canon webpage.
The problem: - if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with an image and text, the image is not printed (the space is blank). - if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with just an image, it's printed great. - if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Impress, the images are not printed but the text is printed great.
Iam looking for an Image viewer that lets me delete images through an 'delete' button/option in toolbox.. Most of the image viewers uses edit menu-->delete option, but iam looking for an direct link, clicking on which deletes the image currently open in image viewer ???
i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version. I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
Ubuntu minimal install with Xfce, in a kinda old computer, I would like to update to 10.04 when it's out, what kind of considerations I need to take? I would prefer to avoid to have to build the system again
I installed Ubuntu using Wubi, but I've found it comes with a lot of stuff I don't need, like gedit, brasero, and all the games. Is there a way to install a completely minimal version of Ubuntu, and just install what I need as I go?
I run a saned daemon on an Ubuntu 9.10 server, and use xsane clients on other machines. Does anyone know a secure way to open up the server's firewall to allow access to a scanner? I'm looking for the minimum amount of ports I can open up.
I tried "sudo ufw allow from 10.1.1.0/24 to any port saned", but this doesn't work. I'm guessing xsane needs to hit some more ports on the server or something.
I would like to know if there is a way to install Ubuntu 8.04 with a minimal configuration. Just the desktop and the important programs needed to run/update ubuntu. I'm asking this for my current problem found in this thread URL... hasn't been solved yet, and if the said problem doesn't get solved I would have to downgrade to 8.04 for this is the only version of ubuntu that works with the monitor described in the linked thread. Also, I would like to know if there is a way of installing fonts in 8.04 as easy as adding fonts to 10.04?
A few days ago I tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 minimal CD 64 bit PC (amd64, x86_64), from [URL], but couldn't. The reason is that none of the Ubuntu mirrors were accepted. I don't know if the problem is that the laptop isn't 64-bit, I'll list the specs, or what and I don't want to burned another disk without advice on what to do.
The laptop's specs are:
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-55 (2 CPUs), ~1.8GHz Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.vistasp2_gdr.101014-0432) System Model: HP Pavilion dv6500 Notebook PC BIOS: PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.1
I am in a situation to boot fedora 15 live cd in to command line mode, not graphical mode, for some testing purpose. how to change argument during booting mode
I've been playing with Ubuntu for severla years, although I've been a casual user, always just installing from the live disc. I'm comfortable with apt-get, and not scared to format, reformat, get angry, calm down, reinstall, etc.
I'd like to upgrade my Dell Mini 9 netbook wti 9.10. one of my problems with 9.04 is space. with the standard install I'm using 3.7 of my 4 Gb of HD and want to try and streamline that. I've starting have problems upgrading my apps because of space to downlod the upgrade to.
I plan on formating and starting from scratch with the minimal CD (transfered to USB), but I want a clear recipe of steps.
Main goals: - Standard gnome interface (not remix) - Open office writer, calc, and impress - Chromium
I know once I get started to type "cli" to install the basics, but then what? Many of the guides I've seen online are several years old. I can handle chromium and Open Office once I'm all up and running, but I don't want to install and then uninstall firefox, gimp, etc.
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a hard drive for another computer, then I switched it back to it's original computer and when I try to update or anything, it won't get the packages because it isn't connected. So I try entering in lspci. It recognizes: Ethernet Controller: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet pro 100 (rev 0
as one of them. I have the Ethernet cable plugged in, the Ethernet light is on, so it detects the cable. It just won't connect, and I have a valid connection or I wouldn't be able to be on here right now. I've tried 2 cables, still a no go. Is there a way I can connect or will I have to put the HD in the other desktop again and install everything and some drivers?
So I go to install the Minimal Ubuntu edition and get to the ethernet driver selection part and it can't figure out what driver I have (Odd since Ubuntu regular can).
I have downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" Minimal CD. I would like to use the Startup Disk Creator to put it on bootable USB. when I run the Startup Disk Creator and click on "other" to select the downloaded .iso, my selection is ignored and does not show in the "Source disc" list of the dialog box.Is there another way to create a startup USB from the minimal CD download?
