Ubuntu :: Microsoft Virtual Pc Won't Run Inside 7 But Did In Vista

I got windows 7 32-bit on my laptop (While having kubuntu 9.10) and I've been using microsoft virtual pc for 2 years now and I got 7 on my desktop and it runs like it did back in vista but why can't i run it inside 7 on my laptop?
It didn't work before on my desktop but eventually did
I tried windows virtual pc but neither of my computer will run it!!
every time i click it it says this program is blocked due to compatibility issues
According to the compatibility center from microsoft, it say it's compatible and requires no action.

I searched the forum but could not get the desired result.PROBLEM- I am using ubuntu 10.10 installed inside Windows Vista. Now with every start up ubuntu gives a low space warning. I alloted 10 GB inside windows while installing ubuntu using wubi. Now it says only 34 MB space is free. Is it possible to increase the root size inside windows. My both OS are on C drive and it has about 15 GB free. I would like to allocate & GB to ubuntu.

Do not attempt to make any changes to your operating system without fully understanding and accepting that if you screw up, you get to start from scratch. This tutorial involves editing files and folders independent from your Operating system and is relatively safe.
From this point, we'll assume your running Windows 7 and have Virtual PC installed. And before anyone thinks "Hey, what about VMWare or blah blah blah", don't clutter this thread, if they want to do that, they'll Search for Ubuntu on VMWare :wink)
I wanted to run a couple linux apps without rebooting my machine. What follows is an exploration in self mutilation and approaches voluntary masochism. I have discovered that while patience is a virtue, there is nothing virtuous about her. After reading over and over article after article on how you can't use Microcrap's built in Virtual PC for Windows 7, you have to use 3rd party to run a Linux VM. I called ******** and found some lingering threads buried deep within the ubuntu forums. This example is kind of thorough although it lacks the ease of use for people who don't know what they are doing.
A little primer on virtual machines. A virtual machine is a translatable snapshot of an operating system that will play on any machine. It does so by providing a known set of generic hardware with varying levels of complexity based on which OS is running on which machine. In this example, a copy of Ubuntu Linux 10.04 (lucid-32bit) is being run within a window on a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit machine.
Now for the why don't you just set up a dual boot machine and take full advantage of the power of the penguin. Well, it's not that easy, for a multitude of reasons. The biggest is convenience. I have instant access to files updated on either machine within the other, without the wait of a reboot just a quick ALT-TAB. I'm also not stuck to just terminal linux commands through a telnet session to another box. I rarely go beyond the terminal prompt in normal testing, however there are some network tools and testing consoles that I prefer in Linux. And yes, I do have a dual boot option should I want to flaunt my super 64-bit penguin power.
So, on with the story... After spending nearly a day trying this and that and seeing who did what and what wasn't working on my machine, it boiled down to what can Windows Virtual PC do, what hardware does it present to an operating system when it's enhancements are turned completely off (coincidence they would only support RedHat linux? I think not, see approved government operating systems).
When getting setup to start your image, you need a few large downloads, and you need to make your list before you start the process, so you can walk away and watch some tube or mow the lawn. Files needed to get you started: (these will not change typically)Microsoft Virtual PC There will most likely be 3 downloads for this. The upside is you get a "free copy" of windows XP professional out of it. The next file you will need is an ISO of the version of Linux you would like I chose Ubuntu 10.04 32bit, but this will work on most debian kernels I do not recommend 64 bit linux anything at this point unless you dual boot only, it's problematic. Do not burn the ISO to a DVD or CD (I'll explain why later)
Okay, we have all we need downloaded to a common location that we remember right? Great, let's get started installing Microsoft Virtual PC. If your install is similar to mine, you'll install in this order:

Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu
Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu
Of course change to -i386 if your running 32 bit Windows 7.Now that we have this installed, reboot the computer, after you log back in, check for windows updates by start button and type 'wuauclt /detectnow' without the quotes. Install any updates and reboot yet again.Now we've prepped the computer for adding Virtual PC's. If you want to see what a virtual machine will be like, you can go ahead and run the Windows XP Mode and see how nifty it is to have a clean system to try software on (that's isolated from your real system of course.)
Now on to creating some penguin powered windows. Open Windows Virtual PC. You will see a file explorer type of window with the option to Organize, Include in library, Share with, Burn, Create virtual machine, New folder.
Select 'Create virtual machine'
This will open up a wizard that we will use to setup the environment for Linux. Because this is not a Microsoft innovation, we want it to be as stable as possible.Type in the name you'd like to use, something to identify the OS you intend to install, I used AnotherOS but I would choose something more memorable, especially if you plan on creating multipe VM's The Location should be set for you, although you may put it on another Hard Drive if you would like (perhaps you don't want to allocate space on your SSD and prefer it on your SATA drive) Now for RAM, this is the amount of ram that will be reported to the new operating system, in this example I chose 512, I would recommend at least 1024 if you plan on doing anything graphically intense. For the most part, this will be a chunk of real memory that Windows 7 will not be able to use while the virtual machine is active. You don't want to set it to 3096 if you only have 4096 available and then try to run Autocad on Windows 7 and open your pocket Linux to do some geological survey conversions.
Networking, just leave this checked, we'll address this later. On with the show We want to create a virtual hard disk using advanced options. NEXT Choosing Fixed size because we want this to be as stable as possible. As far as name and location, it's typically simpler to keep it the same. It will have a different extension so NEXT. Now we specify a size. For reference, a typical Linux install, including swap drive portion is around 5gb (assuming you end up installing nearly every package available). I chose 16384 because that was the number that popped up and it was big enough to download nearly anything I could ever want to. Now we are ready to hit Create. You should see this screen and assuming everything happens like it's supposed to, you may close the window.

I am looking for step-by-step guide to do so. I can go for any easy to work with Linux distribution , may be UBUNTU. But Hyper-V page says it officially supports only SUSE and REDHAT, others can be done on owner's risk.
I dont need future compatibility etc as yet, just need to do some experiments, so any distribution would be fine. FYI - I am trying BOINC installation and testing.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 inside VMware Player running under Windows Vista and I can't connect to the internet or the host computer from the Ubuntu.
I have set all the VMware services to manual (like VMware DHCP Service), but starting them manually doesn't help.
In VMware, the network seems to work (there is a green dot beside the network icon) and I have tried both Bridged and NAT settings.
ifconfig doesn't show the eth1 interface, unless I give it as a parameter (or use -a). I think this means that Ubuntu thinks that the network isn't connected at all.

I know that you can run programs on a remote machine if both machines are windoze, or if both are linux. but can you run one from the other?

This is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.

I setup a private network from virtual machines and one of the machines is the DHCP server for the group. I want to specify a next-server for the DHCP server but I'm having trouble connecting to any of the machines that I lease IPs to. I'm just trying to do a simple ping/ssh to 10.0.0.252 (a machine with a lease) but it doesn't seem to respond. I'm assuming I need to be able to connect to my next-server but maybe I'm wrong.

Recently I decided I wanted to try installing Ubuntu 8.10 inside of my Vista Home Premium x64 system.Ubuntu installs correctly, but when I try booting into Ubuntu from the boot screen, I get the black screen that tells me it's loading several components of the system, and then it suddenly stops at "Starting bluetooth..." or something of that general nature.

Ubuntu noob and a noob question. I have Ubuntu 10.10, Virtual Box OSE 3.2.8, which I've used to install Windows Vista. Why you ask? Believe it or not the intranet system my work uses doesn't run properly under Ubuntu. Warning message pops up saying so.
My question is, as I need the copy of Vista to run Internet Explorer (may download the Windows version of Firefox as I'm already fed up with IE) I don't need any of the extras like Office etc. So do I need to update Vista? Is it worth downloading the secuirty updates?

I have set up a virtual machine under VMware Player 3.1.2 in Debian. Operating system of this virtual machine is a Windows Server 2003. I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

I've been trying to install Ubuntu Server onto Microsoft Virtual Server at the request of my boss, and I've been having an issue I cannot seem to work around. Now my background on Ubuntu and linux in general isnt amazing, I have configured server at home to act as a file sharing platform and a media server, but thats about it.
Now I've gone to install it on the MVS at work and once the install completes, I recieve the following error: Hypervisor error.JPG
I've tried running the install but limiting the resolution, but from what I can rememeber server doesnt install the GUI to start with, so it should just be showing me the standard CLI.

I am an inexperienced Linux user, I have tried Knoppix and Ubuntu in the past. Since we use Fedora servers at work I have wanted to try Fedora for some time and I tried running it in a virtual machine.My virtual machine is Sun VirtualBox and my OS is Vista Ultimate. Everything worked well until it was time to decide where Fedora is to be installed.Alright, screenshot time yet? This is where I hit the wall, the screen where you select installation drive/partition. The field is greyed out as you can see.
I have prepared a partition, at first I formatted it in FAT32 but because I didn't see it in the installation screen I just re-formatted it in NTFS.Installing with virtual machine should be working? Why is the field grey? What to do? Is it because I have mounted the dowloaded disc image instead of burning it?
I have a 64-bit architecture AMD processor with 2GB RAM and have tried Ubuntu 64-bit in the past, is there a 64-bit version of Fedora and would that be better or worse for me than 32-bit version?

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.
I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I have spent considerable hours searching forums and googling. I have yet to find out what "lm-sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1:" is actually looking at. I have an Abit IP35 motherboard with Ubuntu 9.04 installed.
Here is the output from sensors:
Virtual Device Temp 1 keeps going up to 121 degrees and the computer shuts down. None of the others overheat. Also, my bios does not show my voltages to be set like it lists above. The bios in the motherboard is the latest from Abit.

When I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface.Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.
My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem.So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem

I'm having an issue with setting up the virtual hosts on my web server. I have 2 virtual hosts (example1.com, example2.com). example1.com works but example2.com is sent to the index file of example1.com. I did some searching on google and it seems the problem might be with my /etc/hosts file.
First virtual host that the second is also directed to...in sites-available/sites-enabled (note port 80 is blocked by my isp so I use 8080)
