Just happened after the latest updates on MM
select applications, it loads the menu but it wont go away, pieces of it stay on the screen
solved by reinstalling the nvidia driver.
I have ubuntu 10.04 on the home screen page in the left have colum you have a list of menu items when you install ubuntu, I happen to deselect one of teh menu items. I now cannot reinstate the menus I have included a screen-shot of the home screen so you can see the menu items I have available on the left hand side
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble with the grub boot menu. I have a dual boot system, Windows XP 32 bit and Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. Windows was preexisting when I installed Ubuntu. The install went fine but when I restarted, the Grub menu gives the option of the Windows boot loader but when I tab to that and press enter the screen goes black and the curser just blinks in the upper left corner...no XP boot. The XP drive is there as I can mount it from Ubuntu side but when I try to boot into it it does not seem to be there. What have I done and what can be done so that I can boot into the XP side?

The monitor configuration app always want the primary monitor to be on the left hand side, thus it always extend my desktop right. Can I do anything to extend my desktop to the left instead of to the right so I can have background application on the screen to the left?

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Guest Additions, logging off, and rebooting, all with no luck. There is a screenshot at Screenshot.jpg
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I have update Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10, when I logged using Netbook, when I point over the left panel with my mouse the whole screen disappear, I can't clik on any of the icone.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI noticed it after booting a Linux Mint-10- live usb, and had to do a hard reboot. My grub resolution has always been 640x480. after booting to the live usb & hard reboot(rseiub didn't work), the menu is shifted to the left and I can't see the left side of it anymore. About 1" of the words are not showing.I've changed the resolution to 800x600 and I can see it now, but wonder why it happened and how to get it back the way it was. Not sure what else may have been affected.

The top and bottom menus appear after running gnome-panel in a terminal, but it does not fix the left had side launchbar.If i click in the area where the launch bar is I can start some applications, and sometimes the bar will flash ever so briefly.I am really excited to move away from Microsoft, but I wont be able to until this last piece of the puzzle is fixed.My system details are as follows:

I got Ubuntu 9.10 running very well. ever since this morning when i booted i have that weird Panel on the desktop towards the left. It is showing basically the Application menu. I dont know why? I know i did not change anything. Also since this morning my right klick on the desktop nothing happen either? i dont want that on the Desktop!

Also I had wine to run an MS application I uninstalled wine, before uninstalling the application. The icons remain, do I need to re-install wine again, uninstall the application then uninstall wine? The file that held the application I deleted, first because I had a brain fade.
View 7 Replies View RelatedFor learning purposes i've set up a vpn between a laptop (running ubuntu) and a pc (running windows). The 2 computers are on the same lan. The VPN server is set on the laptop, and as a guide i used this tutorial:The problem is that the mtu on the ppp0 interface is 1396 and the mtu on the eth0 interface is 1492 so in order to pass packets from the et0 if to the ppp0 if, the laptop needs to fragment the packets, and here is where the problem appears: the packets come with the don't fragment bit set. I've tried lowering the mtu of the eth0 if but that didn't work. The only way i managed to make this work is setting the ppp0 mtu size to 1492. The thing is that setting the mtu and mru in the pptpd-options file to 1492 doesn't do anything (at least to solve this problem) and the only way to set the mtu of the ppp0 if is to manually set it using: Code:sudo ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1492 The issue with this is that every time the connection resets i have to enter the command.

They work fine.I am trying a RHEL 5 client running the same client application as the RHEL 4 clients. The RHEL 5 client looses most messages. have tried with two other clients running CentOS 5 with similar results. The server indicates write failure or blocked. The messages are typically 50 kilobytes. I have changed many parameters in sysctl.conf Has anyone encountered similar problems?

The computer starts up and the logo/ubuntu pops up with the scrolling load bar beneath but thats all the farther it goes. The monitor will go blank and then just restart the process all over again. Any help would be much appreciated

I installed 10.04 beta 2, but have all the updates to this point. Everything freezes randomly. I get a weird pattern across the screen and the mouse and keyboard stop working. From what i can tell, the hard drives just keep spinning at whatever speed they were spinning when the freeze occurred.
I haven't been able to reproduce it on purpose.
I was using an Nvidia 8400 GS and through some reading i thought it might be the nvidia drivers. I tried reinstalling the drivers and still froze randomly. I took out the video card but I realized I have an onboard nvidia chip (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 rev a2). Drivers or not, it still freezes randomly.
I have dual boot Windows/Ubuntu 9.10 and everything was running fine until recently when after booting to Ubuntu just showed me the system background image with mouse pointer and that was it - no login screen, nothing.
I tried swithing to console mode and logging in - it works fine, but swithing back to x just gives me the background image and the mouse pointer ( it is working though )
I'm trying to install Kubuntu on an old Windows system. I am getting tons of errors such as:
I/O error
SQUASHFS error:unable to read page, block XXXXXX
SQUASHFS error: unable to read fragment cache block
It then reports that it's loading ACPI modules and starting the ACPI services, starting the system log daemon, doing Wacom setup, starting kernel log daemon.....and then it reads sb_bread failed reading block umptysquat.I have a feeling that this hard drive is toast. I can't get it to install Windoze or Linux. I can't even get a prompt so I can do a low-level format. Unfortunately, I'm not super savvy with Linux and don't know what to do next.
My Karmic installation has two problems regarding screen saver activation:
1) VLC is set to deactivate the screen saver during playback, but the screen saver activates anyway.
2) Sometimes, when NOT running VLC, the screen saver doesn't activate itself at all. I've set it to 5 minutes, but after 5 minutes of inactivity, nothing happens. This ALWAYS occurs while running a java web applet, and SOMETIMES also occurs when no software is running at all.
I've googled this to death, but can't find any information relevant to this problem.
defult theme however the close, maximize and minimize buttons are on the left of the screen instead of the right. Is there a way to move thoes back to the right side of the screen?

I had to re-install openSUSE11.2 but I kept having either black screen or mouse cursor freeze. Using sax2 to change video driver didn't work whether "ati", "radeon" or "vesa" was selected. I finally came across a solution: 1. Log in at run level 3 with acpi=off, no apic,F3=vesa, then become root 2. YAST -> Miscellaneous -> Live Installer, etc. 3. Reboot 4. If black screen, force a reboot and repeat step1 5. Autoconfig restart? Yes 6. When installation is finished, reboot 7. Boot option: 3 acpi=off noapic F3(vesa) 8. Login as normal user then become root 9. #YAST > Online Update 10> #YAST > Edit Bootloader
11. Edit Grub menu: Add the following to the end of the kernel line (under heading: kernel options...): vga=792 acpi=off noapic. Note that vga=792 is from a LILO config file example, which has the side note:"vga=792 #you need to do this so it boots up in a sane state". I came across this from "Framebuffer HOWTO: Using framebuffer devices on Intel platforms" Your Grub menu may also show vga=0x317 but this is because you might have selected 1024x768 screen resolution;it has nothing to do with vga=792. Vga=792 is what essentially solves the black screen problem.
I have an Acer Aspire 5220 with and AMD processor and 1 GB of RAM. I had Windows vista and now have Dual Boot Vista / Kubuntu 9.10 clean install. Recently a blank white box appeared in the upper left corner of the screen. About 10-20 minutes after I log in it appears and disappears after 1-2 hours.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi just installed ubuntu studio and it seems to be working fine but i'm having an issue where the both the left and right side edges of my laptop monitor are unresponsive/unclickable for about two pixels all the way down. it's a minor issue that i could probably get used to, but it's particularly annoying when trying to use a scroll bar in firefox or any other window that when maximized would have it just against the right side of the screen. instead of simply swiping the cursor all the way to the right i have to stop just short of the edge in order to use the scroll bar/any other function.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed following this guide [URL]... x_and_Mac_OS/X but I have an hp g71 349wm with intel chipsets, on ubuntu 10.10 I can't use nvidia, my system hates me if I try to install those drivers, that guide says I need either nvidia or ati drivers, I have not tried to get ati drivers going as when I tried to get nvidia going, my system totally crashed and ended up being totally unrecoverable for some reason, anyway my problem is that after installing pylotro and lotro and patching, I start it up and all I get is a big black square on the top left side of my screen.. no idea what to do to make this work. the only way to get rid of the square is to reboot.

I have here two old identical compaq pc's with 64mb ram.I want to copy drive/os from one machine to other. So i do a drive to drive clone (witn both hd's deing connected to another machine). And it says its done and okay. But the second (cloned) machine doesnt boot. And have the black screen with the blinking white cursor in top left corner. I have already tried to do fdisk /mbr and also copying partition table from original to destination disk. Because i think it is logical that with a drive to drive clone it sould be copied. But i have a doubt in that somehow. Because why would it not boot if it was copied then
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows XP Dell laptop that completely froze the other day. I cannot start it up, and cannot even access safe mode -- it just goes to black screen with underscore in the upper left corner.
So, I did some searching and saw a recommendation to create a Ubuntu Live CD to run and access the info on the hard drive, at least. I have most of it backed up, but not the drivers and I know that will be a pain to redo. So, I am mostly hoping at this point to recover a little info off the drive before reinstalling the OS. Of course, if I could just fix it, that would be better...
I get an error message when I try to access the hard drive through Ubuntu that says it is in hibernation mode and I need to start windows and shut it down properly before Ubuntu can mount the drive. Since I can't get into Windows, this is impossible. It also said something about being able to mount it read-only.
