Ubuntu :: Menu Bar Shifted - Can't Move Back To The Right Again
May 3, 2011
I recently installed the newest version of Ubuntu (11.04) and I reverted to Ubuntu Classic. For some reason the icons in the top, right hand side are not where they are supposed to be: they are shifted to the center, and try as I might I can't get them to move over back to the right again.

I decided to persist with Unity having spent until today launching in an Ubuntu Classic session. The thing that bugs me the most is the fact that each program has its menu (ie File, Edit etc) in the top panel. This may be fine for netbooks but not my laptop.I just launched Tomboy, which startde with its window in the bottom right of the screen, however to get to the programs menu I have to move the cursor all the way to the top right of the screen - miles.

I've just installed 10.10 and the screen is shifted down (meaning, there is a black bar at the top of the Acer AL1916W monitor and the bottom menu bar is hidden - the accessible). The Acer controls seem to have no effect on this.

I have this script that I use to find log files in the /var/log directory that are 2 days old, move them to /var/log/tmp, rename them to the system date.filename and move them back to /var/log. Everything seems to work as planned, except that the files don't get moved out of temp, and they keep getting rename. This leads to very long filenames such as:
2010-02-22.user_040.2010-03-05.user_040.2010-03-07.user_040.gz
What is it about this script that isn't moving it back to /var/log? Also, is there a better way of doing this than what I'm doing? Basically, I'm just trying to set up an audit trail on some of the files in /var/log, so that at the end of the month I can tar them, and then have our syslog server pick up the one giant monthly log.
Code:
# Create variables.
dir="/var/log"
tmp="$dir/tmp"
hostname="$(uname -n)"
[Code].....

If you are like me, you can't stand the new placement of the Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons. Here is a useful how to guide, with screen shots, on how to put them back on the right side:[URL]

When I run apps like ZSNES or XBMC in fullscreen their output is clipped at the bottom. It's like their output is shifted down about 20%.Here are some screenshots of the two appsI'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit with an Intel card. I get the same behavior with desktop effects on and off.uname -a Linux fry 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linuxy video is output to my TV via a VGA cable. nless one of these apps is running in full screen, everything is fine. In fact, I can even run VLC or Movie Player in full screen with no problems.

Is it possible to move the unity menu bar? It's the bar on the left side with all the icons. I would prefer it to be on the bottom. I really hope they do this for 11.04.

How would I go about moving a separate home partition back to /, and be able to delete the /home partition? I'm assuming I would have to copy the contents of /home to the root partition, and change fstab at the very least.

bouncing icon and spinning icon in toolbar for 10-20 seconds, then nothing. Is there a special log file to be found for mozilla errors? (couldn't find anything useful in or near /var/log/messages or warnings all dependencies of associated programmes seem to fulfil dependencies, but obviously something isn't right. Does anyone else have the same problem?

I want to move all files and directories that are 1 month old out to back up into a separate folder. There will be a lot of files and I want to make sure it copies properly. The problem I'm having is integrating a MD5SUM into it to check integrity. MD5SUM is not recursive, so I figured it would work in a loop when it copies each individual file, I'll do a md5sum on each file and delete that md5 once its verified it copied ok.
[Code]...
I also need some sort of error handling to output all md5's that didnt pass the hash check.

I just upgraded to Natty and some images display shifted colors, e.g. bright purple instead of yellow and bright green instead of whatever there used to be. Some images also show properly. I attached a screenshot of a bit of Thunderbird where the bug is visible. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong, or how to diagnose the problem properly? EDIT: and, to make this even more interesting, the attachment I made to the forum displays even more ridiculously once it has been attached - I'm attaching a screenshot of that, too. (although right now I have no idea what it looks like on a working machine)
EDIT2: To reiterate the problem: apparently, Firefox and Thunderbird rotate colors in indexed images for some reason. I am trying to find a way to fix this, with no luck so far.

I have recently had problems a with Movie player. It seems to having trouble playing DVD's and video files. it has a tendency to stop/freeze and sometimes if I try move the progress bar or scroll back or forward it wil just instantly close the Movie Player. I'm wondering is there a way to check it for bugs or is there a more reliable/better quality player that I could get instead.

I saw a similar thrad, but can't find it anymore. Anyhow it was not resolved. So I take the liberty to post this in a new thread: I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop in dual boot configuration (other OS is WinXP). grub starts and I can hit enter to boot Ubuntu. However as soon as I use an arrow key to move downwards in the menu, grub hangs. In this condition I cannot boot any other OS, not even the "safe" version of Ubuntu.
Any idea what is the cause of this? It is a fresh installation and I read in the other thread that reinstalling grub or re-running grub-update had no positive effect. Does anone know how I can install grub 0.97 ? Where do I find it?

I am using OpenSuse 11.3 (64 bit) on my desktop and I have two (identical) screens connected to its on board Intel graphics chips. Both screens are detected and there is no problem when they are cloned, but if I want to have one screen right of the other (using the command xrandr --output VGA1 --right-of HDMA1, as the KDE settings manager never managed to have any effect), the right screen is shifted ca. 100 pixels to the left and on the right side of it I see the left side of the left screen.t seems both screens are detected if I type XRandR:
Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 1024, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA1 connected 1280x1024+1280+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 338mm x 270mm

I'm wondering if somebody knows how to add more locations to "Send to", or "Move to" menu. Now there is only Desktop and Home folder. I know there is this nautilus actions configurator app, but with it, I'm able to add to main context menu, not to "Copy|Move to" submenu.

I have two Xubuntu machines. On one I upgraded in place, no problem. But the other got messed up so I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 from scratch. I like the new Xubuntu, including changes they've made with this version, but...on the fresh install, the Places menu is missing (see attached).
Places is one really neat feature that my distro had the Windows doesn't; it makes/made life easier for me--I hate to see it just go away. Does anyone know how to bring it back? It doesn't seem to be available under Add New Items (to the panel).

I have tried installing logmein in wine. It installed fine, but didn't work so I removed it. Its icons though, would not be deleted so I removed Wine entry in "Edit menus".
after this I purged wine, deleted /.wine and reinstalled, but the menu entries do not get reinstalled. I know how to make launchers, what I want is the interactive menus back (browse c, uninstall and programs)

I was recently having problems with Me TV, and I had to kill it in a terminal window. When I killed it, it didn't release the DVB-T stick and when I launched Kaffeine, it told me that there was no device available. I re-booted rather than trying to figure out where the lock file was or whatever the problem might have been. Now, when I boot into my desktop, I am missing the menu bar and the task bar. Also, under Applications -> Settings -> XFCE Settings Manager, the Panel icon doesn't launch any settings dialog when clicked. How can I get my menu bar and task bar back?

I have multiple drives on my system and I decided to put Ubuntu on my main 1TB hard drive. I install 9.10 on my drive and it partitions half of it to Ubuntu and install is successful. Well, on reboot I get nothing. I switch to my secondary drive with windows on it already and the dual boot menu appears? Apparently it installs in on SATA1 and not the drive selected as boot in the BIOS. I decided to leave it this way until recently I needed to use the secondary drive on my other rigs failing hard drive. So, how do I get grub on the 1TB hard drive? I ran windows 7 BOOTREC files and recovered the Windows boot, but I couldn't get Ubuntu to recover with live CD nor the GRUB online help didn't work. Is there a simple way to get my dual boot menu back?

I have just upgraded to lucid and the first thing that I noticed was that the different shutdown options (Logout, Restart etc.) disappeared from the user-switch menu (at least that's how I think it is called) where they were located previously under karmic. Logout and Shutdown are placed under the System menu currently, and they work fine, but my question is how to show all (or some) of the shutdown options in the System or user menu? I dislike going through the dialog and prefer to choose my action directly from the menu.I have tried removing and readding the user-switch applet, to no avail. I tried adding menu items to both the system menu and the user menu, to no avail either

The last time I used Ubuntu I installed some updates, and it told me to restart the computer. I restarted the computer, and Ubuntu wouldn't start.
