Has anyone managed to get wireless working in Ubuntu 9.10? I normally use ethernet, but don't know how I would pick up or scan for connections or use a connection requiring no passwords e.g. in an internet cafe.Is there a shortcut to this process? I don't have it installed and am only using the live cd, but no luck. For my purposes there's no point installing it unless I can pick up a connection first.
View 9 RepliesI use my T61 both wireless and in the dock, where I switch to the wired connection. After the latest round of updates, I seem to have lost the ability to switch to the wired network. When I turn the laptop on, I see it connect to the wireless network, but when I left click on the tray icon under Wired Network is says Device not managed. I have not made any changes to anything in the last couple weeks, besides some updates. How do I go about getting the wired network back in there?I tried to add eth0 back into System - Preferences - Network Connections, but whenever I try and add eth0, but it still says Device not managed.

I'm trying to get a wireless PC (PCMCIA?) card working under 10.04 desktop. It does not seem to be recognized by nm-applet and I cannot see any particular reason why. I have disabled the built in wireless (Intel 2200) in both BIOS and by blacklisting the appropriate module so there should be no interference from that. The card is a Linksys WPC300N V1. It has Power and Link/Act LEDs both of which remain dark.

I saw a comment about 'You need to have "managed=true" for NetworkManager to bring the interfaces up. in '/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf and did so but I see no change.
I understand that modules must be compiled to support network-manager but I would expect that to be the case with modules that ship with 10.04. I don't see any obvious indications for why this is not coming up with network-manager. Is there something I;m overlooking or something else I need to do?
I am trying out a Debian system on my at home desktop. The way that the desktop connects to the internet is via a wireless card. The installation went fine to my knowledge, I used a CD and the installation even used the wireless internet (albeit slowly) to download the needed packages to complete installation. Now when I try to connect to the wireless network Network Manager says that Wireless Networks are "not managed." I feel like I'm probably missing something either really simple and silly or something really big requiring a re-installation. Either way I can't even find an instance of this happening to someone else's system.

I ran sudo dhclient to try release and renew my IP, in case that was the problem. It released and renewed successfully, but still didn't connect to the Internet.
Can you "split" a network interface in Ubuntu, similar to how airmon-ng lets you use your wireless card in managed and monitor mode, by making another interface out of the same hardware? I know it'd be slower, but I'd still like to do it.

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Ive tried to install the driver, but i am unable to do so. When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.
I can connect to the internet with wired connection. The switch for the device is on but this command "sudo lshw -C network" has the following results:

View 4 Replies View RelatedAnyone managed to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a box with Intel Core i7 920@2.67Ghz processor. I downloaded ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso & ubuntu-10.04-alternate-amd64.iso ran md5sum's, burnt them to DVDs & CDs but couldn't manage to install the 64-bit version. For some reason the installations abort. I've got Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit version running on the box right now.

I have what I need as far as by ISP settings but the Evolution folders; well that is messed up. What I am looking for if it is out there would be links {read directions to} tutorials for Evolution and Gnome. Everything comes into the unmatched folder on evolution so I think I need to find where to read up on 'Folder rules and permissions'. The document view just is not working so I know I need to read up on that; I think it is part of Gnome but I'm not positive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm completely new to Linux/Ubuntu, but I managed to create a FTP server by using apt-get vsftpd or something.I followed a tutorial and modified a file called vsftpd.conf.I tried to disable all kind ofblocking/permissions. From a Windows client, I can connect to it without any login (I enabled anonymous) and I can download from it, but I am unable to modify it or upload files. Unless there is a better way to transfer files between the computers, how can I enable writing on the FTP server?

In my old house I had a static IP. Is this anything to do with it?
I recently installed ubuntu alongside windows 7 on my machine. I ardly know anything about partitions, but I managed to shrink the windows partition to make space, abd then use the ubuntu installer to create the ubuntu partition. But I hadn't realized that there were actually 3 Windows partitions - "Acer C:", "Recovery", and "System, Active, Primary Partition".
So I didn't know that I should have made the ubuntu partition "Extended", which means that I can't make new partitions anymore. Is there anything I can do without reinstalling ubuntu?
I have 2 wlan cards. wlan0 and wlan1. wlan0 is in AP mode(Master mode) using hostap. wlan1 is connected to another wireless network and is in Managed mode. Now I want to make a bridge between wlan0 and wlan1. I do it like that:

ifconfig wlan1 0.0.0.0
brctl addbr mybridge
brctl addif mybridge wlan1
can't add wlan1 to bridge mybridge: Operation not supported
It doesnt work, because wlan1 is in managed mode. But Windows 7 can bridge 2 Wlan cards when one is AP and another one is STA. How to do it in Linux?

My setup is as follows:wifi0 --> Internet; managed entirely via nm-applet (NetworkManager)
Where I'm running into trouble is in the creation of a bridge interface (br0) to bridge future VPN clients to my local network.
The guide(s) say that I need to screw around in /etc/network/interfaces to setup br0 and [eth0/wifi0] accordingly. The problem is that when I specify a configuration of any sort for wifi0 (my only choice for a network uplink), it disables nm and I am unable to configure my wifi in any sort of sane way after reboot... Further info: this "server" doesn't move, and always always connects to the same wifi hotspot that is also nailed in place.

I just got myself a Dell Inspiron 1440. And decided to install my favorite distro Debian. I got the installation to go with no issue and all seems to be working fine. However the wireless isn't working. NetworkManager doesnt even detect a wireless card. I followed the instructions here and installed the b43-fwcutter and then issued the modprobe b43 and modprobe b43legacy commands. Then I issued the iwconfig command and this was the output.

I am running openSUSE 11.3 updated with all the latest patches and I cannot connect to my wireless router. I am running Linux Mint 10 on the same type of notebook HP Compaq 6910p and it worked right after the install. If I take off the security WPA & WPA2 Personal I can connect. lspci -v | less shows this for my wireless card.

I am using the same settings for both notebooks just can't figure out why openSUSE 11.3 won't connect. I get the prompt to key in my password, I've even checked the box to show password to make sure I was keying it in correctly. Everything was good but it just goes right back to the password prompt after it fails trying to connect.
