Ubuntu :: Machine Cannot Go 24 Hours Without Freezing
Nov 23, 2010
I have been battling with my machine for a while now, it cannot go 24 hours without freezing, I leave it on at night and in the morning it is frozen. I want to use it as a content server to my mobile devices but I have to be home to use it because it always needs a reset. I did a memtest and there were many errors, I realized that my ram voltages were under the min req. I boosted the voltage and ran memtest for 48 hours, no errors. This machine used to be stable for over two years, same hardware, I switched the case and now it wont last a day.
I am running 10.10 64bit, I would post log files but I dont know which one would be useful. I believe it becomes unstable when the screensaver activates. Also sometimes it wont fully boot but will go to the command line and other times it will give random error messages when grub is trying to load. Every week I solve one problem and then something else goes wrong. I have been using ubuntu since hardy on this machine and only lately (10.04 & 10.10) have the problems been occurring.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 computer with an ATI Raedon x1250 graphics card.
Everything runs fine for about 3 hours, then it will randomly stop working.
Symptoms:
Mouse stops moving for 10 seconds.
Screen goes white.
Speakers start repeating last 10 seconds of whatever was playing.
Screen goes orange or purple with lines across it and random symbols...
At that point I hardware restart my computer and all is fine again
dmesg yields the following after every crash

I experienced freeze with Fedora 12. I haven't had any issues up until now at all with stability in Fedora. Since then the problem has persisted with a freeze about once a week and then over the last few days it has started freezing daily. I thought at first that it was a problem with an update and that it would get sorted out with another update but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I installed FC12 within days of it's release and I've had no issues until now.
The odd thing is that the machine only freezes when I'm not using it. I suppose this is a good thing, but it makes it harder to figure out what is causing it.
The entire machine locks up and I'm unable to do anything but use the reset button and get the machine going again. I can not connect via SSH either as all network connections are being refused.
I have looked through the logs and can not find anything odd. There are no kernel panics and there are no Xorg errors.
I'm starting to wonder if this is a hardware issue, but the system drive was just installed in November and hasn't reported any errors when I check it.

I'm having a really random intermittent fault with video files... all kinds... and also happens with different media players... they lock up the entire system but when i reboot they'll play fine...could this be the graphics card? it's a Sparkle Nvidia Geforce 9500.... is there any reccomendations for a suitable replacement that doesn't cost the earth... I'm looking at starting 3D animation too, so was looking to upgrade anyway...there was some kind of error that randomly popped up once or twice when it was playing files...

Periodically, about 3 to 5 hours, Ubuntu disconnects from my wi-fi network and doesn't reconnect until I restart the router. This is an Ubuntu specific issue, since it doesn't happen when I boot into my Windows partition, and it doesn't happen to other computers on the network.

I was liking 10.4 in Virtual Box so much that I installed it to my laptop and then, after a very good experience, upgraded my other two Ubuntu machines. One went well, but this other one - the oldest - that has been on Ubuntu for years, is having trouble. The upgrade dialog is predicting another 12 hours and it's been at least 12 hours already. The log is moving swiftly and shows no sign of trouble.

I've seen a problem staying connected to a Cisco VPN, this goes back a number of years.I was running 8.10 and it was fine. After I moved to 9.10, the problem started happening. My VPN connection to work would drop after 8 hours.I looked around for a while and ended up compiling the cisco provided client which works fine (but is a pain).I've been running 9.10 on my work laptop, and it experiences the same problem using vpnc, but I've been dealing with it because it's easier than using the Cisco client.
I installed 10.04 on my work desktop, my home desktop, and a personal laptop that was previously running 8.10, and all experience the same problem with vpnc.I even go so far as to keep one terminal open with a constant ping all day and it still drops after about 8 hours. A couple of others at work experience the same problem using vpnc. This is not a problem using the Cisco provided client, or running it on windows or os/x.Has anybody else seen this, or have any ideas on what I can start looking for to get this addressed?

I've a new Dell Precision T1500, Core i5, 8gb RAM, nvidia graphics card, that seems to freeze after some hours. I'm not sure how long exactly, more than two hours at least.
OS: Ubuntu 11.04
Cause: leave computer turned on, unattended for some time >2hrs.
Symptom: Screens are blank, no response to keyboard or mouse input, reboot is only way to rectify.
Things I've tried:Turn off screen saver
Disable "Sync to VBlank"
Disable screen power management, screen stays "on" always
So far none of these have corrected the issue. The screens are still on, but there is nothing displayed. Same thing did happen with Ubuntu 10.10, I'd hoped maybe 11.04 would fix it, alas, no.

I have a new PC with 9.10 desktop . It's running Zoneminder. For some reason it will not run more than 24 hours with out locking up . It's set up stand alone with no screen or keyboard. I hacked the vga port with 3 resistors so remote desktop works. I did this on 2 other systems and it always works fine. I want to ask where can I look in the logs to try and find out why this beast dies after just before 24 hours of run time.

I would like to have a way to keep track of my working hours easily.
Insert arrival and finish times and have the difference in decimal. For example, if I start at 8:00 and finish at 9:30, 1.5 should be added.
I tried to do this with Calc but couldn't figure it out. I set one column to have entrance time, another one to have exit time and a third one with the difference("=B2-C2"). The result is in a timestamp format and not decimal. If I use another cell to say something like HOURS(D2) it rounds the number rather than give a decimal(would give 9 for 9:20:00).
EDIT: solved by doing =24*(B2-C2)

I am unsure if this is a hardware problem or a linux problem. My machine is only 3 months old so it is not the fan. I didn't have problems until recently, and after the latest kernel update it got worse - having to restart more frequently.
I do not experience the fan turning off in windows. I use thinkfan when I have to but it isn't a very good program for an every day basis. The fact I can force start the fan with thinkfan when it turns off leads me to believe it is a kernel issue.

I have a minor Internet issue. I have a static IP address with the modem acting as a gateway only to my ISP. My Ubuntu server hosts my public IP address and I use pppoeconf to connect. Every 3 hours I lose Internet. I have wrote a short script to reconnect. I doubt that it is my ISP trying to renew that often.

I've recently moved from Ubuntu (after moving from Gentoo and Arch) to Fedora 15 and am experiencing some crashing.
What happens is after a few hours or not particularly hard usage (web browser, a couple of terminals, maybe having run a few Ant scripts etc) all the fans seem to go into serious overdrive. I can't move the mouse and the system doesn't respond to any keyboard input. After about five minutes of this, the fans slow down but the system remains unresponsive. I've left it for a further 30 minutes, still nothing so I have to do a hard reset.
My hardware is a stock laptop Compal IFL90. Besides the standard installed software, the only other things I've installed are;
- Sun JDK (and Eclipse, but not running during crash)
- Pogo Plug software (pogoplugfs which is started on login)
- Cryptkeeper for my encfs stuff
- Opera
Can anyone point me to a possible fix, or let me know what other information is needed to try and get more complete support? It's not to much of a problem at the moment, but when I start using my laptop more frequently, having to power cycle every few hours is going to make is to difficult to use.

Hi!
I've been frustrated with several problems I've been experiencing with Karmic Koala. The one I'll mention in this post is the fact that it randomly decides to adjust the system clock ahead 6 hours. I believe this began happening when I set the location for the system time that displays in the top panel. I'm guessing that the 6 hours is the fact that I'm in the US Central Time zone.

I have a hp dv3 laptop which dual boots Win7 and Ubuntu 9.1 64 bit. I have no issues with my wireless adapter in Win7, but I lose connection after a couple of hours in Ubuntu. When connection is lost it is not possible to view any wireless signals, the adapter is basically turned off. The only way to restore the connection is to reboot, then Ubuntu will again automatically connect to my WP2 encrypted router. My wireless adapter is a AR928X made by Atheros.

Running ubuntu 10.04.The sound works perfectly when I first boot the computer.hen when I go idle and come back a few hours later, it stops working. Not sure why. Also, another side effect I noticed is that video sometimes fails to play after the sound has stopped working.Killing pulseaudio will restore video playback, but restarting does not restore sound.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 32 bits and a Realtek 8185 wireless card. The card worked perfectly fine with WPA for a long time in Windows 7, but on Ubuntu I'm having problems. Using it without installing anything else makes it work for a very short time. It disconnects after a while and I have no other choice but to restart the computer.
Using windows drivers and ndiswrapper doesn't work at all (in fact it makes things worse because it stops recognizing my card at all). Using the linux drivers from Realtek's website is what works the best so far. I had to compile them and install them. But it still disconnects after a few hours if I'm using WEP (and only after a few minutes if I'm using WPA). I looked at other people with 8185 problems in this forum but their solutions didn't work for me.

I'm running 10.10 with about 10 SATA disks attached. If I spin them down with hdparm -Y, every disk that has a filesystem on it (but -not- disks that are partitioned but have no filesystem) spin up, simultaneously, about every 10 hours. How do I find the culprit? The machine is sitting effectively idle---I know it's not something I'm doing that's causing the spinups. Is there some way to monitor -anything- that touches a particular block device?
My suspicion is that this might be the gnome low-disk-space warning daemon statting everything. (This -used- to be gnome-volume-manager, but I'm not sure where that code went when GVM was dropped in 10.10---how do I find that code? What package is it in?)
And if it -is- the disk-space monitor, how do I kill it dead? Not just "don't tell me about disks", but "don't even bother looking". I would -really- like these drives to spin down and -stay- down, possibly for days or weeks, until needed---not spin up every 10 hours until I either manually spin them down or until whatever I've set in hdparm spins them back down.

I'd like to find some sort of program which can tell me how much incoming data I've had in the last 24 hours. It goes by hours, not by days, but anything that's simple and that can display this will do. Is there any sort of program that does this? Something that would fit well with Ubuntu's style wouldn't hurt, but I'm not that worried about it as long as it does the job.

My computer has two physical hard drives. Up till now, the first hard drive was for Windows XP and Windows 7, the second was used for file storage. I just installed Lucid Lynx on the second drive. The two problems are as follows.
<s>1. When I boot into Windows 7, the clock is set ahead by five hours, even as the time zone remains the same. </s> Terribly sorry. Found the answer in another thread. Should have searched.
2. I have kept the Windows 7 boot loader (choice of 7 or XP) on the first hard drive, and put Ubuntu and grub on the second hard drive. That way, if I want to load Ubuntu, I press F9 for the hp boot menu and select the second hard drive. From there, I would like this to boot straight into Ubuntu. How do I keep the grub boot menu from appearing? Should I just edit grub.cfg, so it has a timeout value of 0?

My wife and I have:
iPhone 16GB 3GS on iOS 4.2.1 (not jailbroken)
iPhone 32GB 3GS on iOS 4.2.1 (not jailbroken)
We're running Ubuntu 10.10 and syncing our phones with Rhythmbox 0.13.1. It's painfully slow and skips songs sometimes. For 1500 songs, it's taking up to 5 hours. This is insane. I updated my apt sources and can mount our phones just fine. Syncing slowly is the only issue. I've read a ton of other reads about iPods having this issue as well, but not only were those issues never resolved by I haven't seen one with the actual iPhone.

I have a computer home that I use a web server and I had Lenny in it for about a year and didn't experience any problems. Recently I needed to update to Squeeze just to be able and use part of my server for a game(which I couldn't compile on Lenny). I renamed every "lenny" word in the /etc/apt/sources.list with "squeeze" and ran dist-upgrade. Everything seemed fine(minor some "link not found" warnings). I also had some minor problems with the mysql configuration after the update but I managed to fix them all. Then I noticed that after some hours(not sure how many) I can suddenly not reach my computer via ssh. Neither can I visit my website(even from the local network). The computer doesn't appear either in the router's "attached devices" list. My other computers have no problems so it can't be a router issue.Pinging from the server to the outside world doesn't work. I tryied "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" and that didn't do anything. The only way to fix the problem is by rebooting but then again after some hours the problem is still there. Do you guys have any idea what the problem can be?
