Ubuntu :: Lost Sound With Xine After Hardy Update?
Dec 19, 2008I just lost the sound to Xine after updating Hardy. It works fine otherwise and I have sound with Totem and VLC so it would seem to be a Xine-only problem.

View 1 RepliesI have a Hardy which last night asked for updates that included kernel changes. Today I find I no longer can connect using WIFI and have no sound. The GUIs are just not there and it's as if the controllers themselves have disappeared. For example lshw -C network reveals a Cisco Airon Wireless, but it's not listed as a wireless device, just as network controller. Can anyone advice me on how to approach this? Is it possible to revert changes or something?

In the last week or 2 I've noticed something odd with the audio - but as I don't use the it very much and also accept all the ongoing updates from Fedora. Anyway symptoms are (using ALSA):
1. Volume control button on the laptop - when decreasing to less than ~50% the sound goes to zero.
2. Watching flash movies (in Firefox 3.5.1, Adobe 10 plug-in) (e.g. BBC, .....): they play fine for a few seconds then go choppy (audio and video) then video recovers but sound is lost (and the laptop volume control does not work at all after that).
3. Finding similar problems on replay of audio with kplayer and vlc on music files (ogg) that previously worked fine.
I've seen the pulseaudio and vlc fix thread but I don't use pulseaudio in kplayer, for example.
I've just had a phone call from an 8.04/win xp duel boot user who has lost the boot entry to xp after a 8.04 update. I guessed at a system upgrade but she checked and is still on Hardy. They write and only have the xp for printing as there is no Linux support for the cannon printer. Using the printer is important. I've said I'll pop round and try to sort it out. Any ideas how I can do this. Update grub in recovery mode maybe or if I need the command line what should I try? I'd like to know before calling as though I'm not quite a novice this isn't a problem I've had to cope with since grub 2 beta ( didn't solve it then either an am still using 9.04 ). Hacking legacy will be new to me. As this is a writers machine with all her work on it I'd regard it as a critical pc, don't want to mess things up for her.

It seems that i have to install the win32 codec package in order to play .mov files with xine !! how can i install these codecs ?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI am using ubuntu karmic. I log into gnome, but I have kaffeine installed. I find I can't play videos with mp4a mpeg4 audio in kaffeine. The video plays fine, but their is no sound. When I use vlc it plays fine and the codec information reveals mp4a.
I think it might be related to xine as the phonon backend is xine. I try opening the file in xine, and there is also no video. When I try to change the phonon backend to gstreamer, there is no sound for anything. I have libxine1-ffmpeg, libmpeg4ip-0, and libfaad0 installed, though I dunno if they affect this.
I want to use kaffeine rather than vlc because I want to use kaffeine for dvb viewing and recording. In my area, it seems they are broadcasting mp4a instead of mpeg2 or what not.
I have just installed Slackware 13.1 32bit. My hardware is a P-4 3Ghz with a gig of ram. Intel on board graphic and sound.
This is the best implementation of Kde I have used so far. Slack 13.1 is amazing. The install went very well and everything we configured properly.
My problem is when I start Kde or try to shut dowm or logout I get the same error for knotify: Unable to use the Xine Multimedia Backend:Could not find plugin 'Xine' for application 'Knotify'
I get this same error with the application name at the end of it. If I open amarok I get the same error message with amarok at the end. If I try to click a misic file in dolphin same error message.
When I try to shut down or log out from menu I get the xine error and nothing happens. The only way I can log out is Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to get to the KDM log in screen and then I am able to shut down from the menu.
I have been looking on the forum and using google but have found nothing useful.
The error pops up when I try to play a cd or music on the hard drive.
Meanwhile I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and sound over HDMI works there without any problems so far after unmuting all channels.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a USB dongle to watch tv (Asus U3100 mini) that supports DVB-T. I live in portugal and DVB-T here uses MPEG4 h246 codec. Until now the only app I can have image and sound is VLC. However with VLC I can't schedule recordings and other features that totem + gnome-dvb-daemon has (or mythtv, also no sound with it). I have all related gstreamer plugins, ffmpeg, x264 libs and I've tried to install everything related with mpeg and aac. i don't know what I'm missing here, Video with totem is also a little jerky compared to VLC and xine.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have a problem with sound. Previously my on-board sound controller was identified automatically and worked flawlessly. But now I don't have any sound in the system with the only exception of Xine-based applications (Xine itself, Kaffeine-xine and Amarok still play fine but all other software is silent)Have anyone had this problem before.I'm using Debian Lenny stable with KDE 3.5.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn Gnome and XFCE I always have a choppy music playback. The music is never played smoothly. There is always hesitations in the playback, as if the CPU is running on 100% and cannot cope with the system load.
One of the reasons for that is (in my case) Pulseaudio.
Another reason is Gstreamer. When I choose Gstreamer as backend in KDE, I get the same choppy musicplayback as in Gnome or XFCE. With Xine as backend in KDE, everything is fine. So my conclusion is: with Xine, the sound would be fine in Gnome too.
So, I wonder if it is possible to use Xine as backend in Gnome too. Does anyone have experience with running Xine in Gnome and/or XFCE? What do I need to do to set Gnome/XFCE, so that it uses Xine instead of Gstreamer?
Or is there maybe a special setting, I have to apply? In gstreamer-properties I have tried all possible settings, but this didnīt change anything to the quality of sound.
My experience is also: this choppy sound is hardware-independend. It doesnīt matter which hardware I use, the sound is choppy. It is also distro-independend. The sound is choppy in openSUSE (gnome and in KDE with applied Gstreamer backend), in Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Fedora with Gnome, Linux Mint with Gnome.
I've had issues with the later versions of Ubuntu, so in an effort to road-test Firefox 3.5 on Hardy I'd like to change my Karmic/Hardy dual boot to a Hardy/Hardy dual boot, and follow the instructions in [URL] to put the Mozilla build of 3.5 on the new installation.
I can't see any reason why a Hardy/Hardy dual-boot shouldn't work, but does anyone know of any issues with this I might not be aware of?

I configured my Xubuntu laptop to work with my Netgear Wireless router to connect to the Internet. I was able to connect, and downloaded Hardy updates of 184 MB. After installation of the updates, the system prompted me to restart. The Wireless network is not working since then. Tried reconfiguring, but to no avail. The proprietary drivers for my wireless network card have been downloaded and installed... remember, it worked well enough download the updates! I installed it inside my windows xp pro and run smoothly after installation, added couple of widgets and so on... after I restarted it the next time, a balloon showed on top saying 113 or so updates are available, so I updated it.
After update I reboot my lappy and it won't get to my ubuntu anymore but works fine with my xp. I tried several searches on the net to find the solution but can't really figure it out. I just tried running Boot info script as it might help experts figure out what's wrong with my box and here's what it shows:

Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

Recently, I suddenly lost all sound coming in from firefox. Other sound works fine (e.g. Amarok), but I can't get any sound from type of source on the internet. There's also no sound coming from Opera.
Am running 10.04 from upgrade.
The startup sound just desappeared. The Gnome Login Sound is still on the list of starting programs and the command is right (/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play id=desktop-login description=GNOME Login). What makes it more weird is, that it works fine on all other users. I started to suffer from this problem since I tried to change the sound (I have done it before with no problems). At the same time with changing the startup sound I installed PulseAudio volume control. Could these things have something doing with my startup sound desappearence?
