Debian :: Sound In Plays Only In Xine-based Apps?
Oct 12, 2009
i have a problem with sound. Previously my on-board sound controller was identified automatically and worked flawlessly. But now I don't have any sound in the system with the only exception of Xine-based applications (Xine itself, Kaffeine-xine and Amarok still play fine but all other software is silent)Have anyone had this problem before.I'm using Debian Lenny stable with KDE 3.5.

In Hardy Heron, after installing xine and the usual stuff, and setting xine as the default dvd player in /etc/gnome/defaults.list in the usual way, and also linking /dev/dvd to /dev/dvd2, when I pop in a commercial dvd for autoplay, or select xine from the context menu to play it, it starts to play fine, but also produces the "source can't be read" messagebox, which goes away after being OK-clicked 10 (exactly!!) times.Launching xine directly from the application menu does not produce this problem.

I just installed wheezy and upgraded to jessie. I had previously gotten sound working in wheezy by installing the flashplugin-nonfree and flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound packages, after configuring my headset in system settings. However, now I can't get sound to play in firefox. I've installed flashplugin-nonfree, flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound, and pulseaudio, still without luck. The volume is turned all the way up in alsamixer, sound tests play fine, and I can play music in VLC without any problems. This leads me to believe it's not a problem with drivers, but with some package I'm missing that will allow firefox to play sound. Sound wasn't working in the default video player either, before I installed the flash plugin. Is there something I'm missing?
Also, sound doesn't play on Konqueror either (KDE browser), which seems to indicate it's a problem with flash and not with firefox itself. After removing the flash plugin and installing pepperflashplugin-nonfree to ensure the pepper plugin was used instead of flash, sound still would not play in chromium, so I reinstalled the flash plugin and still don't have sound in any browser.

openSUSE 11.2 64bit
libxine1 from Packman
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).
alsa-info here - [URL]
Also I am totally confused by the mixer, it has so many knobs that I am totally lost!

I installed Debian lenny amd64 a couple days ago and I have only got a few things figured out thus far. I got libdvdcss, and adobe flash along with some neat little games and apps. Well I had no sound at all because I couldn't get my audigy ls working with lenny so I'm useing my onboard sound (a realtek). I changed all my sound options to ALC 880 Analog now I have sound for movies and mp3's but not in games or on the web (ie ....., farmville).

So I've got a new system on which I had to re-install Debian, and I've been trying to fix the sound today, but it doesn't seem to work... I've kept the same ALSA configuration (except a minor adjustment to the card number as this system appears to have two cards instead of one), but it doesn't seem to work as expected. I got this weird error while running an app that uses ALSA:
Code: Select allALSA sound driver initializing...
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1024:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
--> (Device: default)...Failed: Operation not permitted
In VLC it works fine, provided that I manually choose the right device under Audio -> Audio Device.here's my /etc/asound.conf:
Code: Select alldefaults.ctl.card 1
pcm.dsp {
  type plug
  slave.pcm "dmix"

I have just installed Slackware 13.1 32bit. My hardware is a P-4 3Ghz with a gig of ram. Intel on board graphic and sound.
This is the best implementation of Kde I have used so far. Slack 13.1 is amazing. The install went very well and everything we configured properly.
My problem is when I start Kde or try to shut dowm or logout I get the same error for knotify: Unable to use the Xine Multimedia Backend:Could not find plugin 'Xine' for application 'Knotify'
I get this same error with the application name at the end of it. If I open amarok I get the same error message with amarok at the end. If I try to click a misic file in dolphin same error message.
When I try to shut down or log out from menu I get the xine error and nothing happens. The only way I can log out is Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to get to the KDM log in screen and then I am able to shut down from the menu.
I have been looking on the forum and using google but have found nothing useful.
The error pops up when I try to play a cd or music on the hard drive.

I have a USB dongle to watch tv (Asus U3100 mini) that supports DVB-T. I live in portugal and DVB-T here uses MPEG4 h246 codec. Until now the only app I can have image and sound is VLC. However with VLC I can't schedule recordings and other features that totem + gnome-dvb-daemon has (or mythtv, also no sound with it). I have all related gstreamer plugins, ffmpeg, x264 libs and I've tried to install everything related with mpeg and aac. i don't know what I'm missing here, Video with totem is also a little jerky compared to VLC and xine.

I am using ubuntu karmic. I log into gnome, but I have kaffeine installed. I find I can't play videos with mp4a mpeg4 audio in kaffeine. The video plays fine, but their is no sound. When I use vlc it plays fine and the codec information reveals mp4a.
I think it might be related to xine as the phonon backend is xine. I try opening the file in xine, and there is also no video. When I try to change the phonon backend to gstreamer, there is no sound for anything. I have libxine1-ffmpeg, libmpeg4ip-0, and libfaad0 installed, though I dunno if they affect this.
I want to use kaffeine rather than vlc because I want to use kaffeine for dvb viewing and recording. In my area, it seems they are broadcasting mp4a instead of mpeg2 or what not.

After a fresh install of opensuse 11.2 I followed the multimedia guide to install mm-support. Sound is working, results in xine are excellent. Compared to 11.1, vlc now plays sound with drops about every second. To be more precise: sound is ok for several seconds, then a first drop appears. Thereafter the time between the following drops slowly shortens. After a minute or so, the drops come in intervals of about a second.

In Gnome and XFCE I always have a choppy music playback. The music is never played smoothly. There is always hesitations in the playback, as if the CPU is running on 100% and cannot cope with the system load.
One of the reasons for that is (in my case) Pulseaudio.
Another reason is Gstreamer. When I choose Gstreamer as backend in KDE, I get the same choppy musicplayback as in Gnome or XFCE. With Xine as backend in KDE, everything is fine. So my conclusion is: with Xine, the sound would be fine in Gnome too.
So, I wonder if it is possible to use Xine as backend in Gnome too. Does anyone have experience with running Xine in Gnome and/or XFCE? What do I need to do to set Gnome/XFCE, so that it uses Xine instead of Gstreamer?
Or is there maybe a special setting, I have to apply? In gstreamer-properties I have tried all possible settings, but this didn´t change anything to the quality of sound.
My experience is also: this choppy sound is hardware-independend. It doesn´t matter which hardware I use, the sound is choppy. It is also distro-independend. The sound is choppy in openSUSE (gnome and in KDE with applied Gstreamer backend), in Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Fedora with Gnome, Linux Mint with Gnome.

I've tried walking myself through all the sound help threads, but I am not having any luck. Sound was fine a few days ago. But now I get nothing. I uninstalled and then reinstalled both alsa and pulseaudio... and their respective mixers bounce around like they recognize sound is being made, but nothing comes out of the speakers. sound does work in windows so the speakers aren't blown. nothing is muted to my knowledge... alsa and pulse mixers are not on mute. output is set to Internal Audio and not HDMI stereo, though I never know which profile to be using.. i've pretty much tried them all to no avail. results of aplay -l

I'm on Kubuntu 9.10, using Totem to play .wmv files, and certain of them cause the player to search for an audio codec (wmap?) that is never found. The video played without audio after that. So I followed advice to remove ~/.gstreamer-0.10, and reboot. A new .gstreamer-0.10 directory appeared, but now, Totem will not even play the video. It recognizes the audio codec however. The video codec shows up as "Windows Media..." but resolution is 0 x 0, and nothing ever appears in the window. I tried uninstalling and re-installing w32codecs and non-free-codecs, and removing the registry files under ~/gstreamer-0.10 and using gst-inspect to rebuild the database,
but nothing helps.

I installed Ubuntu to a flash drive and it worked all dandy like. However, on other computers the audio doesn't work, neither can I install a driver for the graphics card to use effects and (at least so it seems to me) run 3D games. Is it trying to use the same hardware that it did on the first computer I used and therefore hasn't installed the right stuff?
EDIT: I can 'play' music, so I think the codecs are fine, but no audio comes out, so I'm thinking it must be a driver problem.
EDIT2: Apologies, I checked the "Comprehensive sound problems solution guide" and was able to fix the audio simply by unmuting the speakers. However, the graphics problem remains.
One other tid bit that might be relevant is that the first time I booted up on a different computer it did tell me (in different wording) that the graphics might have trouble because it was set up for a different hardware system, so I told it to set up a new configuration and that seemed all dandy.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I'm running 10.10 and had never tried recording before I upgraded to 10.04. I had the same problem in 10.04 though.

I got a 5.1 desktop sound sys for my recently built gaming rig. It sounds great. On Windows, that is. In ubuntu when I'm playing music, primarily when the subwoofer plays the bass, the speakers sound like they're farting and ripping phone books in half. Also, they get very statticy and sort of quiet. In sound preferences, analog stereo duplex is selected, if that's of any value. How can I get good sound playback in ubuntu?

I have just upgraded my box to be more multimedia friendly and one of the upgrades was to improve the sound card. I decided to get the Asus Xonar DX pci-e card. I have it working but the speakers are not plugged into the front output socket as the xonar dx only plays sound from side surround output. Will the sound be any better from the front out on my 2.0 speaker system or is the sound being directed out of the side surround out full quality? How to overcome this discrepancy?

The only thing really missing from this install is this issue with the sound. I've searched all over the forums and i found one thing where you get the model and codecs and write them to a file, however, I can't seem to find what my "model" is because none of the postings have anything about Lenovo laptops. Here is the command they all asked for:
Code:
With that info, how do I get the model, and how do I get my speakers to stop playing when headphones are plugged in. Also, I don't have any software installed like pulse audio either, so it's not that.
